Canada fans celebrate late win over South Africa to seal historic last-16 spot

Canada fans in Los Angeles celebrated a tense World Cup knockout victory in Los Angeles on Sunday, after a stoppage-time goal gave the co-hosts a 1-0 win over South Africa and sent them into the Round of 16.

“Oh, it was back and forth the whole game. I was so scared that they were going to score first, and Canada got the goal. I was so happy,” one fan said.

"I think it was a pretty good one. We were waiting for the overtime, and all of a sudden the game was over by Canada,” another fan said. “So 1-0, we're very happy about it."

The first Round of 32 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup looked set for extra time before captain Stephen Eustaquio struck in the 92nd minute, ending South Africa's run and pushing Canada one step deeper into a tournament on home soil with expectations beginning to gather momentum.

"Canada deserved to win. It was kind of a rough match to watch. In all honesty, I feel like, you know, South Africa was just happy to be here a little bit to a certain degree,” a fan said. “They really didn't create anything. So if you don't create anything, you don't deserve to win."

The result took Canada into the last 16 of the expanded 48-team World Cup. South Africa, appearing in the knockout stage for the first time, were left beaten by a late goal after holding out for almost the entire match.
