Mount Kilauea erupted again early Sunday, marking its 37th outburst since December 2024 and sending fresh streams of molten lava and plumes of smoke across Hawaii’s Big Island.
Timelapse footage shows magma bubbling from a vent and lava streaming down a slope.
The United States Geological Survey assigned the event an orange aviation alert, indicating limited risk to aircraft, and said the eruption began on Friday and is expected to continue until Tuesday.
Kilauea, situated on the island’s southeastern coast, is regarded as one of the world’s youngest and most active volcanoes. It last erupted on November 9.
The current phase of volcanic activity, which started on December 23, 2024, has been characterised by short, intermittent bursts lasting roughly a day, followed by several-day pauses before activity resumes.
