Beirut came under fire after an Israeli airstrike killed Haytham Ali Tabatabai, Hezbollah’s chief of staff. The strike hit a residential building in Haret Hreik, a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. Hezbollah confirmed Tabatabai’s “martyrdom,” calling him a “great jihadi commander” and warning that the attack “crossed a red line.”
