00:00The October 7th Hamas attack deep inside Israeli territory has left a haunting impression on the
00:25people of Israel, the government, and most deeply on the military of Israel, whose duty it was to
00:31safeguard the Israeli borders from all kinds of threats. In a deeply reflective address to the
00:38nation, Israel's military chief, Lieutenant General A.L. Zemir, has admitted that there was
00:44a systemic failure from the side of the military, which failed in its primary mission of protecting
00:50Israeli civilians on that day, addressing the nation on November 23rd. Zemir said, and I quote,
00:57my conclusions present an unequivocal picture. The IDF failed in its primary mission on October 7th
01:04to protect the civilians of the state of Israel. This is a severe, resounding, systemic failure.
01:11The lessons of that day are numerous and significant. In its most far-reaching display of accountability
01:17yet, the IDF chief announced sweeping command measures against several senior IDF officers
01:24for their role in the failures to prevent the Hamas attack. The measures unveiled by Zemir
01:30include the sacking of several major generals from reserve service. Among those relieved are Aaron
01:37Haliva, Oded Basiuk, and Yaron Finkelman, each of whom bore operational or intelligence responsibility
01:44on the day of the attack. Reprimands were also issued to Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Barr,
01:51Navy Commander Vice Admiral David Tsar Salama, and Major General Shlomi Bender. Even as Zemir
01:58reprimanded these military officers, he stressed that many of them had led Israel to significant
02:04wartime achievement and warned against a societal instinct to disparage those who have served the
02:10nation. These sweeping measures follow what Zemir described as a thorough, professional, and in-depth
02:16inquiry into the systematic breakdowns that allowed the devastating attack by Hamas, which resulted in
02:22the death of over 1,200 Israelis. Concluding his address, Zemir vowed that Israel will not allow threats to
02:30develop, there will be no containment, and saluted the IDF troops operating across multiple fronts.
