A tragic incident unfolded at the Dubai Air Show when India’s indigenous fighter jet, the Tejas Mk1A, crashed during a demonstration flight. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the aircraft went down around 2:10pm local time. The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed that the pilot lost his life in the accident.

The Tejas, a 4.5-generation multirole fighter, has been a symbol of India’s push for indigenous defence production. Equipped with an AESA radar, fly-by-wire controls, and capable of carrying a wide range of weapons, the aircraft has been central to India’s modernisation efforts. This marks only the second recorded crash in the jet’s operational history.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident as tributes pour in for the fallen pilot.

00:00Tejas, whose majestic flight knows no bounds, whose journey through the skies is eternally
00:17unstoppable. The unwavering spirit, the profound determination that will never, ever bend or yield.
00:24The extraordinary valour, the immense courage that absolutely refuses to be defeated, that
00:31will never know failure. Actually, for the past two days, a picture has been widely discussed
00:37across the world. It's of Tejas, which was displaying India's might in the skies at the
00:43Dubai airshow. Then, a misfortune was seen on the nation's heart. A wound, a pain and
00:52an indomitable saga of valour. Tejas is not just a fighter jet, but the courage of India's
01:00engineering excellence, the heartbeat of our scientists and the shield of our army.
01:06Tejas truly represents the diligent efforts of HAL, the ambitious vision of DRDO and the
01:12very essence of India's growing self-reliance. Indeed, Tejas is a remarkably lightweight yet
01:18exceptionally lethal multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft, fully capable of neutralizing any
01:23adversary across all three domains, air, land and sea. Equipped with a single engine,
01:30tie-less, composite delta wing design, Tejas' light body seems to grip and turn the air,
01:38its speed like flashing lightning. When Tejas takes to the skies, it directly challenges the heavens at a
01:45speed of Mach 1.6 to 1.8, which translates to roughly 2,000 to 2,200 km per hour. Even at an
01:53altitude of 50,000 feet, it maintains its remarkable stability and proves itself just as deadly.
02:00It can pierce the enemy's heart up to a 3,000 km range in the air. Tejas' wings are never empty,
02:08they hold the very strength of India. It is equipped with eight to nine hardpoints,
02:13capable of carrying advanced BVR and WVR missiles like Astra and Darby, along with precision laser
02:19guided bombs, various standoff weapons and a substantial payload of nearly 4,000 kg. All
02:24these capabilities combined effectively transform the Tejas into a formidable mini air force.
02:30A warrior who descends from the skies, raining down destruction and on the ground completely
02:35obliterates every trace of the enemy. Tejas' power isn't just in its mighty wings, its mind is truly
02:42Indian and incredibly sharp too. Glass cockpit, multi-function display, digital fly-by-wire
02:48controls, allowing the pilot to perform high-grade aerobatics without risking their life. India-made
02:55Uttam radar can track multiple targets simultaneously and evade enemy electronic jammers.
03:02Along with its advanced EW suit, jammer and missile warning system, Tejas not only fights but also sees
03:15the enemy, understands it and then strikes precisely at the right time. The Tejas aircraft is compact in
03:23size but this very feature is its most significant striking capability. Its low radar signature coupled
03:29with its exceptional ability to make extremely sharp turns and its air-to-air refueling capability
03:35allows it to undertake extended missions both within and beyond our borders. Air defense,
03:40interception, ground attack, maritime strike operations. This means a single platform capable
03:45of handling four distinct types of warfare. This truly is the remarkable and genuine prowess of Tejas.
03:50In the air, Tejas acts as both the pilot's trusted companion and their steadfast protector.
03:54The Zero Martin Baker ejection seat, which is designed to save lives even when the aircraft
03:59is just a few meters above the ground. However, tragically, during the Dubai Air Show,
04:04the brave Indian Air Force pilot, Wing Commander Naaman Shyam was martyred.
04:09But since its induction into the Indian Air Force in 2016, this is only the second incident of a Tejas
04:18crash which testifies to its advanced technology, indomitable capability, and incredible valor.
04:26And above all, Tejas possesses what is dearest to any nation, its indigenous spirit. Its structure
04:35extensively incorporates composite materials, an India-made radar, India-developed electronic systems,
04:42and an India-built flight control. This means Tejas is not just an aircraft for India, made in India,
04:51with Indian technology. It is India's self-confidence.
