00:00With the strike of the symbolic gavel, South Africa's President Sirorama Pozor on Sunday
00:05closed the first G20 summit to be held on the African continent.
00:09It broke with tradition by issuing a leader's declaration on the opening day of talks,
00:13despite fierce opposition from the United States, which has been critical of Pretoria's G20 agenda.
00:19Recognizing our interconnectedness as a global community of nations,
00:25we have called for an end to conflicts.
00:30And wars around the globe, and for a just and comprehensive and lasting peace.
00:36This summit has taken place at a crucial time,
00:42as calls around the world grow louder for progress on the imperatives of our time,
00:50to end poverty in all its forms and ramifications,
00:55to reduce inequality within and amongst countries,
01:01and to take urgent action to combat climate change.
01:07I now say that this gavel of this G20 summit formally closes this summit
01:20and now moves on to the next president of the G20, which is the United States,
01:30where we shall see each other again next year.
01:35The summit is therefore closed.
01:37The wooden gavel would normally have been handed over to the leader of the United States,
01:44which is the next country to hold the rotating presidency.
01:47But Washington boycotted the gathering
01:50because of President Donald Trump's widely discredited claim
01:53that South Africa is violently persecuting its white Afrikaner minority.
01:58.
