00:00Leaders from around the continent are convening in Addis Ababa for the whole weekend.
00:06The reason?
00:07They are attending the annual African Union Summit, the 39th edition since the organization's
00:12creation.
00:13But with the past year turbulent one, the African Union's response to the various crises
00:19and conflicts has come under scrutiny.
00:22The African Union is notably being accused of ignoring its own rules.
00:26The continent has experienced 10 military coups in the past six years.
00:31Coup leaders are not allowed to stand for African Union elections.
00:36But Guinea and Gabon, although suspended after their respective coups, were reinstated last
00:41year.
00:42The plethora of crises has also shown the weakness of the African Union in creating unity on the
00:47continent.
00:48But for some observers, this weakness has been brought about by African leaders themselves,
00:53who have little interest in putting pressure on themselves through supporting an organization
00:57like the African Union.
