00:00Hey everyone, we have some very sad news to share.
00:03From the world of basketball, the NBA announced this past Saturday that former Phoenix Suns
00:08forward Rodney Rodgers has passed away.
00:11At the age of 54, let me walk you through his incredible journey Rodgers played in the
00:15league.
00:16For a total of 12 seasons from 1993 to 2005, his talent was truly recognized in the year
00:222000 when he was with the Phoenix Suns and he earned the prestigious NBA 6th Man of the
00:27Year award.
00:27He was a key member of the Suns from 1998 up until the middle of the 2001-02 season.
00:34It was at that point in the 2001-02 season that he was traded to the Boston Celtics.
00:40Tragically, just three years after he stepped away from his professional basketball career,
00:45his life changed dramatically.
00:48Rodgers was involved in a serious ATV accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders
00:53down.
00:54Before his NBA fame, he was a star in college, playing for the Demon Deacons at Wake Forest.
01:00From 1991 to 1993, he achieved something remarkable.
01:06He remains one of only seven players in the history of the ACC Conference to be named both
01:12the Conference Freshman of the Year and the Player of the Year.
01:15During their college careers, he later graduated in 1994 and is honored in the Wake Forest Sports
01:22Hall of Fame.
01:23Looking at his overall NBA stats, he was a consistently solid player.
01:28Over the course of 866 career games, his averages were 10.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2 assists,
01:37and 1 steal per game.
01:39He was known by the nickname the Durham Bull because he was originally from Durham, North
01:43Carolina.
01:44Back in the 1993 NBA draft, he was a very high pick, selected ninth overall by the Denver
01:50Nuggets.
01:51Following the news of his passing, the NBA posted an official statement on the platform
01:56X, honoring his life and the impact he had.
01:59We also heard from fellow former Sun and current Sun's analyst, Eddie Johnson, who shared his
02:04feelings on X, writing, Man, words can't describe how amazing Rodney was as a basketball player
02:11and person.
02:12R.I.P.
02:13Bro.
02:14He truly left a mark, didn't he?
