00:01This is nice.
00:04Two couples, both ready to put down roots after very different journeys.
00:09Greek islands, the Turkish coastline, the food and the culture.
00:15We came over for a year and we're still here, eight years later.
00:19And with two very different wish lists.
00:22Well, I'd like a tree for a tree house.
00:24Kate, really like three bathrooms.
00:27We're going up a bathroom now, aren't we?
00:29I'm with a whÄnau from Scotland, ready to build their Kiwi future.
00:34That could be my mind, Kev.
00:35And I'm with two nautical nomads, ready to settle just as soon as they choose where to land.
00:42Some of these things we haven't talked about.
00:46But when it comes down to it, both whÄnau want one thing.
00:51The place that's going to grab our heart.
00:58This time, we're in TÄmaki Makaurau.
01:01I'm with an adventurous couple who, after sailing the world for 10 years, are ready to trade in their yacht for a lock-up and leave on dry land.
01:09And I'm helping a family that have made the move from Scotland to find their feet in the tough local property market.
01:14And track down the perfect whÄnau to raise their growing lad.
01:17Nice.
01:18I like the idea of sailing around the world.
01:21What a life.
01:23Just blasting off wherever you want to go.
01:26It's quite terrifying at the same time, though.
01:28I watched Jaws way too many times as a child.
01:30And for me, like, even taking a bath was terrifying.
01:34Just as well we're staying on dry land today.
01:37Though the property market in TÄmaki Makaurau, Auckland, can still be a bit choppy.
01:42But with prices flattening and interest rates easing,
01:46house hunters have a real shot at finding that perfect place to land.
01:50The trick is knowing your priorities, where you're willing to compromise,
01:55and when you're willing to take that punt.
01:57Susan and Jim Dyer, both teachers, are originally from Scotland,
02:03and their story is a classic one for many new Kiwis.
02:06Oh!
02:08We had wanted to come to New Zealand for a while.
02:12I was on maternity leave after having James.
02:14Jim was wanting a break from work, and so we came over for a year,
02:20and we're still here eight years later.
02:23They've done the hard yards, gained their citizenship,
02:26and now it's time to find somewhere permanent to call home,
02:30for them and their beloved lab, Jenny.
02:33We've moved, what, four times?
02:35Four different rentals.
02:37So James hasn't really been able to put down roots.
02:41And we want to have that place that he can call his own.
02:43I would like to be able to hang things on the wall and just have it without rent,
02:52so I can do whatever I want with it.
02:56And I think it's really just to give us a sense of permanency as well.
02:59As a family, that would really bring us together, just ground us in the one place.
03:03The Dyers currently live in the East Auckland suburb of Mount Wellington.
03:11Susan, do you want a look at this one?
03:14We'd really like somewhere local to where we are.
03:18Just because James is involved in the football, we both play for the local club.
03:22James' school is local.
03:24Susan works at the same school as well.
03:26My school's local.
03:27Big garden.
03:27And also, we really like having friends over and entertaining.
03:34We're looking for somewhere where we've got a deck
03:36and some outdoor space where we can do that as well.
03:39Here, good to see you.
03:41Of course, there's a bit more on the wish list.
03:44Space for James and for the dog outside.
03:46A man cave for me.
03:48Yes!
03:50I like watching football.
03:52And because it's Scottish football, it's only like three in the morning.
03:57So, it'd be nice to have somewhere quiet
04:01that I'm not interrupting anybody else.
04:04One thing they do agree on,
04:06how to describe the property market in Aotearoa.
04:10Daunting.
04:11That's exactly the word I was about to say.
04:14Ah, there you go.
04:16It's just because it's so unknown.
04:17In Scotland, you buy a house, that's it.
04:19The land's yours, the house is yours.
04:21Whereas here, you know, it's auctions and negotiation
04:23and it's freehold and leasehold.
04:25Freehold and leasehold.
04:26Cross lease and things.
04:28It's just a minefield.
04:31Good thing I've navigated a few property minefields before.
04:36Paul's got local knowledge.
04:38He knows the market.
04:39Ah, hello, hello.
04:40Hello.
04:41Good morning.
04:42We need help.
04:44So good to see you.
04:46Aren't you?
04:46You too.
04:47Yeah.
04:47Welcome.
04:49Well, um...
04:53You're welcome.
04:54I'm so excited because you come from one of my favourite places in the world.
05:00Oh, it's good to hear.
05:00I love Scotland.
05:03But the Scotch definitely helps.
05:05At the moment, you're living central Auckland.
05:10Mount Wellington.
05:10Yeah, Mount Wellington.
05:11And so in your destination, postcode?
05:14Surrounding suburbs.
05:15Yeah.
05:15Ellerslie, Mount Wellington, that kind of area would be perfect.
05:19What's important about that area to you?
05:21We've not got any family here in New Zealand.
05:23So our family's really the friends that we've picked up along the way.
05:26Yeah.
05:26And that's what's really important to us.
05:29And that's why, you know, some of the requirements in the house was an entertainment area.
05:34Yeah.
05:34Deck, garden.
05:35Anything else?
05:36Well, I would like a tree for a tree house.
05:40Do you hear that, Santa?
05:42So how much am I shopping with?
05:45Probably, we're looking 900s.
05:47Yeah.
05:47Yes, yes.
05:49If it was the perfect property, we could possibly go above that.
05:52950?
05:53I like a good challenge, James.
05:55Yeah, I know.
05:56I'm still holding my breath.
05:57Central Auckland.
05:57Yeah.
05:58Three bedrooms, indoor outdoor flow.
06:01Are you up for this challenge, Paul?
06:04James?
06:06Challenge accepted.
06:07We've sealed the deal.
06:09I've got to do it now, don't I?
06:10Yep.
06:10Absolutely.
06:12Cheers.
06:12Let's go shopping.
06:14The Dyers have a max budget of $950,000, which tightens the search in their preferred suburbs
06:21of Mount Wellington and Ellerslie.
06:22They're looking for three bedrooms and indoor-outdoor flow for entertaining.
06:31The path to finding the right home is very, really straightforward.
06:35As life moves on, so do our priorities.
06:39And what we look for in a home can change with each new chapter.
06:42For some, it's more about space.
06:44For others, less to manage.
06:47Whatever the reason, the key is knowing what matters most in the journey ahead.
06:51The tide began to turn for Lee and Larry back in 2016, when, with their two sons grown
07:00and gone, they watched holidaymakers drift by on yachts from their spacious Whangarei home.
07:07You see them all going past, and you're thinking, why aren't I out there?
07:11I really enjoyed it out there.
07:14Did you bring the fishing lines?
07:16We never catch anything anyway.
07:18Oh, that's true.
07:18That's true.
07:19The couple thought they'd landed on their dream lifestyle.
07:22We built this wonderful place that we were going to retire to.
07:27When adventure called, the house went on the market, and we decided to go to the Met and
07:34buy a boat up in the Met and sail around up there and bring the home.
07:40It wasn't long before they were soaking up everything the Mediterranean had to offer.
07:45The Greek islands, the Turkish coastline, the food and the culture.
07:49The journey home wasn't all sunshine and roses.
07:53I'll have a rock.
07:55Yet the wonders of the open ocean left them utterly spellbound.
07:59Then the dolphins come around the boat.
08:01They're just like torpedoes that are coming through the water, and it was just an amazing experience.
08:07So, we'll put in two to three bedrooms in Onihanga.
08:11After not one, but two epic voyages from Europe to Aotearoa and close to a decade of life
08:17at sea, Lee and Larry were ready to feel solid ground beneath their feet again.
08:23And how much are we going to spend?
08:26Well, at least for the time being.
08:29I'm probably going to go back to work full time.
08:31So, we're looking for a place for the five years or so that I go back to work.
08:36But then we also want the flexibility in the new home that we can just lock and leave
08:40and go to Australia for our winters, perhaps, or sail up to the Pacific.
08:46Oh, a nice little place that's got a garden out the front.
08:50In terms of picking the perfect postcode, that's still a work in progress.
08:54Perhaps around the Onihanga, Mount Halbert kind of area.
09:00We've got family in Papataui too, so it would be nice to be close to family.
09:03I don't want to go to Papataui.
09:06I'm sorry, I'm not going to Papataui.
09:10Some of these things we haven't talked about.
09:12With the odd difference of opinion,
09:19charting a course to the perfect vault hole for these seasoned sailors
09:22might be easier said than done.
09:25Oh, hello.
09:25Hi, guys.
09:26Nice to meet you.
09:28How are you?
09:29We need Jane's help to find us,
09:32the place that's going to grab our heart.
09:36You guys have been living the dream.
09:38How amazing.
09:38It has been an incredible 10 years of sailing the seas.
09:44So the time has come where you need to put down some roots in the soil, so to speak.
09:49Somewhere we can call home.
09:50We've had a little look around, but it's pretty difficult,
09:54so that's where you come into it.
09:58What do you need for your lifestyle?
10:01At least two bedrooms, ideally three.
10:04I'd like to set up one of the rooms as a home office.
10:07I'd like a couple of bathrooms at least.
10:11Any deal-breakers that I should be aware of?
10:13Not a deal-breaker, but I want an open-plan Centre Island kitchen,
10:19so that it kind of mimics the boat a little bit.
10:22We also did guide dog puppies before we went away.
10:25Puppy walking for the blind.
10:26Awesome.
10:27Larry might get back into doing that again,
10:29so a little bit of garden, I think.
10:31It must be hard giving those puppies away.
10:33Well, no, you get another one straight away.
10:35So how much money of yours have I got to spend?
10:39Well, we're looking at around about the million,
10:42preferably down the 900.
10:44But...
10:45I like the but.
10:46If something's really great, we can stretch it a little bit more.
10:50How stretchy am I stretching?
10:51Not very stretchy.
10:52Probably about 1.2.
10:55Oh, that's good.
10:571.2 would be...
10:58Don't worry about him.
11:00It would have to be something really special to stretch as far as 1.2.
11:04There's a lot out there in that price bracket
11:06and a lot of different properties.
11:08I think we just have to trust the process here and have an open mind.
11:12We're in your hands and looking forward to seeing what you bring for us.
11:15Time for me to find some land ahoy.
11:18Let's find something.
11:20Okay, let's go.
11:22Lee and Larry are after a two- to three-bedroom home to call their own.
11:27They want two bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen and a small outdoor area.
11:33Their budget is somewhere between $900,000 and $1.2 million.
11:38Now I just need to find a home they're both going to fall in love with.
11:41We'll see you next time.
12:11And it's time to drop anchor.
12:15So how are you going with your family?
12:17I'm going to be honest, Jane.
12:19I've got my work cut out.
12:20Beautiful family.
12:21Absolutely love them.
12:23They've just got their citizenship.
12:25And I've got a budget of $900,000 for a central city home.
12:30I know.
12:30Well, I've got an interesting dilemma.
12:33Great couple.
12:35Larry is kind of around the $900,000 mark,
12:37whereas Lee is, like, quite comfortable at 1.2.
12:40Oh, kind of feels like Mission Impossible, really, doesn't it?
12:44Well, we'll both have to devise a cunning plan
12:46to get these guys into the house that they want for the budget they have.
12:51That's our mission.
12:52Yes.
12:52You're going to leave now and do the Tom Cruise run?
12:55I can do the Tom Cruise run.
12:55Here we go.
13:07And my first mission, should I choose to accept it, is in Mount Wellington.
13:11With its green spaces, great shopping, and easy access to central Auckland,
13:18this suburb is a firm favourite with families.
13:21The average sale price here is around $960,000,
13:25just over the Dyer's upper limit.
13:28But where there's a will, there's a way.
13:31You asked for a home that has yard, and we found some yard.
13:38Here it is.
13:40Oh, wow.
13:41Yeah.
13:42That looks great.
13:43Is that enough garage for you?
13:44The windows.
13:44Yeah.
13:45That's quite a good bit of garage.
13:47That could be my mind, Keith.
13:49There's a tree, James.
13:51How are you feeling so far?
13:52Yes.
13:52Yes.
13:52Excited.
13:53After you.
13:55This solid and generously sized three-bedroom home on a leafy residential street
14:02offers a light-filled living area looking out into a fully fenced yard.
14:07Perfect for Ginny the Lab.
14:09A separate dining room and double garage mean there's space for the whole family.
14:14The property isn't officially on the market yet,
14:16and the vendors are open to negotiation.
14:19The RV is just over a million,
14:21but there's a chance to nudge it a little closer to within Jim and Susan's reach.
14:25It's a nice sized living room, isn't it?
14:28It's nice and spacious.
14:29Yeah.
14:30And you've got a lovely dining area as well, or a second living.
14:32Yeah.
14:34That's great.
14:34Just a mudge in that, sitting in front of that.
14:38And the kitchen.
14:40Have a look around.
14:42I've got a good feeling about this one.
14:45Big yard.
14:46Tick that box.
14:47Got inside.
14:48It's light and airy,
14:49and Susan absolutely loved that.
14:52But,
14:53are those bedrooms big enough?
14:56This could be your room, James.
14:58No cupboards away,
14:58so you'd need to put in the storage.
15:02This could be another bedroom.
15:04Yeah.
15:04Oh, it's a teeny wee wardrobe.
15:06Oh my goodness.
15:08And another bedroom.
15:09Yeah.
15:11No sockets.
15:12No sockets.
15:13No power sockets.
15:14There's one there.
15:15One there.
15:15One power socket.
15:17I think this is maybe not quite big enough for the furniture that we have in our bedroom.
15:24Lots of storage space in the garage.
15:27I'm not getting dressed in the garage.
15:28Not for clothes.
15:28It's a shame.
15:32Okay.
15:33So, let's go and give the bad news to Paul then.
15:35Mm-hmm.
15:39I'm so excited.
15:40We went inside.
15:42Loved the yard.
15:43Built a treehouse.
15:44Nice and spacious.
15:45We loved the living room.
15:47Loved the light.
15:48Yeah.
15:48The size of it.
15:50We could see ourselves entertaining there.
15:52But the bedrooms were just too small.
15:54What does James think?
15:56Let's just go to the most important member of the family.
16:00Well, yeah, the bedrooms are too small.
16:03Looking forward to what we see next, though.
16:05Look at that.
16:05Yeah.
16:06Property number two.
16:07Come on.
16:08Let's go.
16:09Well, Paul, you called it.
16:11They weren't sold on the bedrooms, but everything else got the tick.
16:15Thanks, Jane.
16:16Here's hoping the next one's a better fit.
16:21With property prices in a holding pattern,
16:23and more homes hitting the market each day,
16:26there's never been a better time to be a cash buyer.
16:30And with a healthy nest egg from the sale of their last home,
16:33Lee and Larry are in a strong position to spot a bargain.
16:37Hi.
16:38This is why we need help.
16:41If they can agree on what that looks like.
16:45But I'm hoping we'll strike gold in Epsom,
16:48one of Tamaki Makauru's most sought-after suburbs.
16:51Its central location, heritage architecture,
16:54and abundance of gorgeous parks makes it easy to see why.
16:59An average house price tipping over 2.1 million
17:02means it's not for the faint-hearted.
17:04So Lee and Larry's million-dollar ballpark might seem like a stretch.
17:09But if you know where to look, there's still space to strike a deal,
17:14and this little townhouse tucked away in a private lane could be it.
17:18Wow.
17:21We're in the heart of Auckland, and if you do want to blast off overseas,
17:25then your home's going to be secure while you're away.
17:28OK.
17:29So what are our first thoughts?
17:30Close to Naven, but it's a great location.
17:34And when you get inside and shut the front door, you're tucked away, OK?
17:38See you inside.
17:39Ready, Larry?
17:43This easy-care, lock-up-and-leave townhouse might be just the lucky break
17:47Lee and Larry have been waiting for.
17:50Inside, it's deceptively spacious.
17:53Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and that open-plan kitchen they were hoping for.
17:58And out the back is a bonus they were probably not expecting.
18:02I'm confident that this place would fall within the range of their maximum budget,
18:06and in this part of town, it's definitely worth a closer look.
18:10Wow.
18:11Oh, wow, this really opens up, doesn't it?
18:14Nice and light.
18:15Nice and light, yeah.
18:16The tree out there is a nice outlook.
18:20So is this what you were expecting?
18:22No, no, not at all.
18:25Yeah.
18:25Like the kitchen.
18:26It's a bit bigger than the galley, isn't it?
18:29It's a big kitchen.
18:31Yeah.
18:31Should we go and check out the balcony?
18:33Yes.
18:33Yep, definitely.
18:36Love that.
18:37Hi.
18:38That's all common area.
18:41Very nice outlook.
18:42Great space for a dog.
18:44Well, I'm going to let you guys go and explore the rest of the house without me on your tail.
18:50I might get lost.
18:51Just hold up.
18:52I'll find you.
18:53All right.
18:53All right.
18:53Let's go.
18:57A nice view from the master bedroom, too.
19:00Looks like they're warming up now they're inside.
19:04Bedroom two, bedroom three.
19:07Smooth sailing from here, do you think, Jane?
19:09This is a nice size that we could turn into an office for when I'm working from home.
19:13Steady on sailor, I'm not cracking the champagne just yet.
19:17I actually have no idea how this is going to go.
19:21I do want to get them a lock up and leave because they are essentially travellers.
19:25But those two are used to having ocean on this side and ocean on this side, having neighbours
19:31on either side of them could be a challenge.
19:36Time for the moment of truth.
19:38Right.
19:39You two.
19:41Spill the beans.
19:42What are your thoughts?
19:43Love the location and the layout of it.
19:46Something tells me there's a butt coming.
19:50I'd like it a standalone place, actually.
19:55I just want that space where I've got my little bit of grass.
19:59It really ticks the box for me.
20:01Well, lucky I've got two other houses up my sleeve.
20:04Yeah.
20:07Looks like Lee and Larry are also going to keep me on my toes.
20:11But this hunt isn't over, not by a long shot.
20:23The daia whÄnau moved to Aotearoa, New Zealand from Scotland eight years ago.
20:28They're done with renting and are ready to put down roots and make some memories in a home
20:32of their own.
20:33The first house we checked had loads of living space, but the bedroom's a bit on the snug side.
20:39I'm not getting dressed in the garage.
20:41So far, they've been searching close to home in Mount Wellington, but I reckon it's time
20:46to nudge them just a little outside of their comfort zone.
20:49So we're heading to the western side of central Auckland.
20:54New Windsor is about a half hour drive from Mount Wellington, where the dais live now, but
20:58it's still in a fairly central spot.
21:00Just next to Mount Albert, it offers quiet streets and laid back charm.
21:04And while the average house price sits at around 1.2 million, which might feel like a stretch,
21:11there's still smart buys to be found among the stock of classic 1960s homes.
21:17Well, I bet you're wondering why I brought you here.
21:20Outside the postcode?
21:22It is outside the postcode, you're right.
21:24But actually, I took a bit of a punt.
21:25When we're in Ellerslie, Mount Wellington, I'm almost certain we couldn't find what I'm about
21:33to show you here for your money.
21:35OK.
21:36OK.
21:36Oh, wow.
21:38Wow.
21:41Yeah, I love the look.
21:43It's nice, isn't it?
21:44Yes.
21:45Look at those trees there.
21:46You'd certainly...
21:48Get a hammock in there.
21:49You'd get a hammock.
21:51A very small treehouse.
21:53This is your quintessential Kiwi home.
21:55I'm excited.
21:56Good.
21:57Yes.
21:57Let's take that excitement inside.
21:58Absolutely.
22:01This three-bedroom weatherboard beauty sits proudly on 600 square metres of freehold land.
22:07In a family-friendly street, it's move-in ready, with plenty of potential for a modern refresh.
22:13Plus, there's a generous backyard for Ginny the Lab and a separate garage.
22:19This could be the moment where opportunity knocks for one lucky buyer.
22:22Oh, wow.
22:28Wow.
22:29It's a nice wee room, isn't it?
22:31It's smaller than the other one, but it's still a nice wee space, isn't it?
22:35And, of course, there's the kitchen.
22:36I like the set-up of the kitchen, because it's all so open.
22:40This home is going to auction.
22:42Where it lands, we don't know, but definitely within the ballpark of your budget, that's for sure.
22:46Excellent.
22:47That's good news.
22:48Well, I guess I should leave you to it.
22:51We'll try not to change our minds.
22:53Good.
22:54Fingers crossed.
22:55See you soon.
22:55Thank you, Paul.
22:58I like that idea of just extending the whole bench top into there and turning the whole kitchen round, almost.
23:05I'm rattled, because I love this home.
23:09It's gorgeous.
23:10But I just don't know if they're going to be able to get their head around the postcode and what that means as far as schools are concerned.
23:18And I wonder if the wardrobes are going to be big enough on this one.
23:21It's going to be a bit deeper.
23:24Yep.
23:25So far, so good.
23:28I don't mean to be repetitive.
23:31Oh.
23:31But there's only one socket.
23:32I know I've got this thing about sockets.
23:37I think there's one behind the bed.
23:39Phew.
23:40I like my sockets.
23:41That's rude.
23:44I could see us looking here.
23:46I really could.
23:47Yeah.
23:47It's a really lovely house.
23:49But is it worth the compromise for being further again from all our friends?
23:54For this house?
23:56Possibly, maybe.
23:57Possibly, maybe.
23:58I don't know.
24:05Look at that.
24:06Ah, there he is.
24:08What do you think of the yard, James?
24:10Enough room?
24:12Yeah.
24:12Go on, then.
24:14I was having a little bit of a conniption outside, to be honest.
24:19I've had the postcode in my head.
24:21Put me out of my misery.
24:22No, no, we like it.
24:23We really like the house, and we think the land that you get is amazing.
24:27Wow, yes.
24:28Because we don't know the area, I think we'd have to have a bit of a drive around and check it out.
24:33Yeah.
24:34James, come on over here, mate.
24:36We need your opinion.
24:37Nice footwork.
24:38Look at that.
24:39What do you reckon, James?
24:40Is it working for you?
24:41Is it winner?
24:42Yeah, I like it.
24:43Top of the list, super.
24:44It's a contender.
24:45Look forward to property number three.
24:46Yes.
24:47All right.
24:47Come on.
24:48A bit involved.
24:48Yeah.
24:51Well, that went better than expected.
24:53Across the other side of TÄmaki Makaurau, Auckland, I'm looking for a home with its foundations
25:02firmly on the ground.
25:04The first house had promise.
25:06Wow.
25:07But was missing a key feature.
25:09I just want that space where I've got my little bit of grass.
25:12So for house number two, I'm also going to change tack.
25:16We've got to switch it up completely, right?
25:18And Lee's already spotted something she likes about this neighbourhood.
25:22There's the marina down right in front of you.
25:24Having Half Moon Bay Marina in the area is potentially a big bonus if Lee and Larry can
25:29moor their boat there.
25:31And just a stone's throw away in the eastern reaches of the city lies Farm Cove, which is
25:38a tranquil, well-established suburb.
25:40The average house price sits around $1.75 million, but there are still pockets of potential
25:46for buyers on a tighter budget.
25:49And I've found a tidy brick and tile on a quiet street that might just cover all the
25:54bases.
25:56What are we thinking, team?
25:58Well, it's a complete house.
26:01Big tick.
26:02Can't wait to see inside it.
26:03Let's have a look.
26:05The solid 70s Stana has had a smart modern makeover inside.
26:10With three bedrooms, one bathroom, plus plenty of space for fostering guide dog puppies.
26:18It boasts an elevator view over wetlands, where a walkway takes you all the way to the sea.
26:23And with a sale by negotiation, I'm hoping we can strike a deal that keeps everyone smiling.
26:30Oh, wow.
26:34Oh, it's nice and bright, isn't it?
26:37And yeah, it's quite a view out there.
26:39Yeah.
26:41You're on your own now.
26:42Okay.
26:43This is nice.
26:44I like the bench top.
26:49Oh, wow.
26:50Look at that shower.
26:51Gee, that's nice and big.
26:53Oh, that's twosome.
26:54Certainly bigger than anything we had on the boat.
26:57Well, they're making all the right noises.
26:59I think I've nailed it, but I've said that before.
27:02This property is what they ordered.
27:06This is a freehold site, and they've got this beautiful view.
27:10Nice look out to the mangroves and across that walkway.
27:15It's no on-sweet, though.
27:17There is only one bathroom, but it does have a separate toilet, so that might work for them.
27:23It's quite a bit of lawn for a dog.
27:25Yeah.
27:26You could have a barbecue here, actually.
27:29Hey, I'm feeling really good about this.
27:32Time to find out the verdict.
27:37Well, you've seen the whole house.
27:39You've circumnavigated the section.
27:41How are we feeling?
27:42It's a beautifully presented home.
27:45Nice and light and bright, and we would love to live close to Marina.
27:50But it's not speaking to me and saying, this is the one.
27:54Okay.
27:55As they say, you've got to get the feels.
27:57Yeah.
27:58What about you, Larry?
27:59Have you got the feels?
28:00I like it as well.
28:02The next bathroom, I think, is a big factor.
28:05I was worried about that.
28:07Yeah.
28:07Really like three bathrooms.
28:10We're going up a bathroom now, aren't we?
28:12We may have to compromise a bit on the size of the land in order to get everything that you want inside the house.
28:19There's something out there for you.
28:20I can feel it in my bones.
28:23Both hands this time.
28:28Wow.
28:28These two are tough customers.
28:31I've got one more shot to find the perfect fit, and I think I've got just the place that could finally get the nod from both of them.
28:38Well, hi, Nancy.
28:44Come in.
28:45Good to see you again.
28:45How do you?
28:45How do you?
28:47Thanks for coming and helping us out.
28:49As you know, we're new to the New Zealand housing market, and we have no idea what we're doing.
28:53So we're looking for any guidance you can give us before we make that first purchase.
28:58Absolutely.
28:59The key thing would be do your due diligence.
29:01A property lawyer can help you work through that and make sure you're going in well-informed on the property, regardless of its condition, before you commit to purchase.
29:09Could you give us some advice on that?
29:11You want to look at getting a pre-purchase inspection report, so something like a builder's report.
29:16That can be helpful in telling you a bit about the home, what construction materials were used, and it can highlight areas of potential pre-existing damage or gradual damage.
29:27Paul showed us a couple of properties already, and I know that one of them goes to auction.
29:31What do we need to do before?
29:33You may want to look at obtaining a limb report.
29:35This is information that the local council holds about the land, such as natural hazards, water services and drainage, and a record of title.
29:43This is property-specific information that can identify any restrictions on the property.
29:49And talk to your insurer before committing to that purchase, as different insurers will have different eligibility criteria.
29:55Finally, as another support resource, you've got the buyer's guide available for you online as well.
30:00That's been super helpful.
30:02Wonderful. Thank you.
30:06I'm scouring TÄmaki Makaurau to find Larry and Lee a place to finally drop anchor.
30:11And while the first two properties haven't quite hit the mark...
30:15A next bathroom, I think, is a big factor.
30:18I'm hopeful we'll find everything their hearts desire in house number three.
30:23So we're heading to Beachlands, just a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland.
30:28With beautiful beaches and Pine Harbour Marina on its doorstep,
30:32it's a gorgeous spot for my sailors to settle down and potentially have their yacht nearby.
30:37The average sale price here is just over $1.5 million.
30:42But with a variety of new developments springing up,
30:45there's every chance of finding something that fits the bill.
30:48All right.
30:52This is yours.
30:54We are joined on either side.
30:57I know that. I can see that.
30:59Larry and I talked about that this morning,
31:01that we realised that we all have to make compromises.
31:04So if it ticks all the other boxes, then perhaps that's not a big issue.
31:09All right. Well, should we just stop getting wet out here and actually go inside?
31:13Yeah, we should do.
31:13All right. Here we go.
31:14Why don't you come in out of the rain and warm the place up for you?
31:17Oh, fantastic.
31:18Oh, that sounds good.
31:19Come on.
31:22This elegantly finished townhouse on a recently developed street is just four years old
31:27and comes with every modern convenience Lee and Larry could wish for.
31:31With four generous bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms,
31:35and a private outdoor garden,
31:38there's more than enough room for guests and guide dog puppies alike.
31:42It's for sale by negotiation, but I've got a little bit of intel.
31:48So I think this could be the one that finally gives these intrepid travellers
31:52Oh, wow.
31:54that feeling of home they've been chasing.
31:56This is nice.
31:59Good.
32:01Jane was saying that you have a wee perchant for a kitchen island.
32:06Yes, yes, very much so.
32:08Tick, tick.
32:09Yeah.
32:11And it's only just a moment's drive away from the marina.
32:14I know, yep.
32:15I know where it is.
32:16He'll be down at the boat the whole time.
32:18Time for me to take Lee on a tour while the boys check out the guest wing.
32:22So, bedroom number one, which I thought would be the perfect office.
32:28Office, yes.
32:29Yep, I agree.
32:31Wow.
32:32Master.
32:32Master bedroom.
32:35Again, it's ticking the boxes.
32:37Yay.
32:37And on the street.
32:40Lovely size.
32:41Yeah.
32:41It's not small at all.
32:43Well, Lee seems to be loving it,
32:45but I wonder if the bathrooms are up to Larry's standards.
32:48Oh, yes.
32:51Oh, that's nice.
32:53I think everybody always dreams of having a good soak,
32:55whether it ever happens or not.
32:57Bath is quite nice.
32:59Yeah.
32:59With some nice smellies in it.
33:00It's really lovely.
33:01Yeah.
33:01Oh, cool.
33:04How are you feeling, Jane?
33:06Out of all the feedback they've given me,
33:08this is exactly what they want.
33:10They don't know the price yet, though.
33:12And this is upper end, really, isn't it?
33:14Larry and Lee have a different upper end.
33:16But then if Lee loves the kitchen,
33:18because, you know, happy wife, happy life.
33:19Mm-hmm.
33:21I mean, what man's going to say no to that?
33:22Exactly.
33:23That's my strategy.
33:24I like it.
33:25Okay.
33:26It's a bloody good strategy.
33:30What do you think?
33:31Oh, it's lovely.
33:33It's a beautiful home.
33:34I could see myself here.
33:35I could see myself here as well.
33:38I'm curious to know whether it's in budget or not.
33:42I'm very curious.
33:44We won't know until we ask.
33:45Okay, let's go.
33:49Of course I'm dying to know what you guys think of this one.
33:54Property number three.
33:56I love it.
33:57Really lovely.
33:58I just wonder if it's too big.
34:01Oh, come on!
34:03You're kidding me!
34:05A four-bedroom home doesn't feel like we're downsizing.
34:11Essentially, you're a three-bedroom upstairs.
34:13You've got an office downstairs if you take out the bed.
34:15A lovely separate wing for guests.
34:18Larry was already taking a bath.
34:19Oh, no, no, no.
34:20Excuse me?
34:21I liked it.
34:22I liked it.
34:22I liked the bathrooms.
34:24I like pretty well everything about it, actually.
34:26No, it ticks all the boxes.
34:29It really does.
34:30Is there a but?
34:32Price?
34:33Ah.
34:34What do you think is worth?
34:35Maybe 1.3?
34:38A listing price is 1.175.
34:42I think it's quite a good price.
34:47It's your call now.
34:48It's your decision.
34:50Lots of thinking, too.
34:51Yes.
34:53I think you've found a winner here, Jane.
34:56I'm not counting my chooks yet, Paul, but here's hoping this is the one.
35:02But there's no time to rest, because we're off to see another house with my Scottish Kiwi whÄnau.
35:09The Dyers loved house, too.
35:11Oh, wow.
35:12But it was well outside of their stomping ground.
35:15So we're bringing it back closer to home.
35:18House number three is in Ellerslie, just around the corner from where they live now and right where they want to be.
35:24The average sale price is just over 1.2 million, but you never know your luck.
35:28Hello.
35:29Hello.
35:30Hi.
35:30Oh, this is so lovely.
35:32I've been waiting to meet you guys.
35:34Good to see you again.
35:36Well, the good news is football club, a few minutes away by foot.
35:40My hairdresser lives right there.
35:42That's nice and porter.
35:43Absolutely, yeah.
35:44We know this area really well, so, yeah, this feels really comfortable for us.
35:48And there's a nice family home for you guys to set your roots down.
35:52So, well, I think without further ado, we should probably head inside.
35:56What do you think?
35:56Yeah.
35:57Yeah.
35:58Let's go.
35:58Right down the end of a private driveway, this hidden gem is an entertainer's dream.
36:06There's open plan living, a freshly renovated kitchen, and a massive north-facing deck.
36:12With three good-sized bedrooms, there's plenty of space for them to grow into.
36:17And with auction day just around the corner, I'm hopeful this could be the place that they
36:21will get to call home.
36:25Oh, wow.
36:25Look at this garden.
36:27Now, this is a decent deck.
36:30It certainly is.
36:30I like that it comes straight into the deck as well.
36:34It's like a nice welcome spot.
36:35Yeah.
36:36Treehouse.
36:37Doghouse.
36:38Yep.
36:40This is great.
36:41It's a very good start.
36:43Good start.
36:45Should we go and have a look inside?
36:45Yeah, please.
36:46Yeah.
36:51Wow.
36:52Nice.
36:53It's wooden floors.
36:54Nice and long.
36:55And if you wanted to get fancy, you could always put some French doors or something here.
37:00Don't give her ideas.
37:01Don't give her ideas.
37:02I love a French door.
37:03Yeah.
37:04Probably best to show you the rest of the house.
37:05Yeah, it's probably a good idea.
37:07Yeah.
37:09I like this wee kitchen.
37:12Can you imagine this here?
37:13I could stand here drinking my glass wine.
37:16Ten out of ten.
37:18This is a good-sized room.
37:20Yeah.
37:20Good size.
37:22Good space.
37:23Good cupboard.
37:24Yep.
37:24Sockets both sides.
37:25Nice and light.
37:27Got our sockets.
37:27You got your sockets.
37:30Oh, nice.
37:33Look at how massive that shower is.
37:35I can't tell you that's huge.
37:37We'd never get you out of that shower under there.
37:39Well, that's a bonus.
37:43Nice.
37:44Yeah.
37:45I really like it.
37:46I really like it, too.
37:47Price.
37:48That's the only thing I'm worrying about.
37:49Oh, I know.
37:50Yes.
37:51I'm waiting for the hammer to fall on that one.
37:54But we'll find out.
37:54Yeah.
37:56Mate, I think you've nailed this.
37:58Oh, thank you, Jane.
37:59I seem to have quite good luck when you turn up.
38:02Oh, I feel the same.
38:03My lucky charm.
38:04You're my Paul the four-leaf clever.
38:06I quite like that.
38:08It's got a room to it.
38:10Let's go and sell them a house.
38:12How long?
38:16How did you get on?
38:16The living area hasn't got the wow of the first house you showed us.
38:21But I think the kitchen and the bedrooms totally make up for it.
38:25And obviously that deck.
38:26That huge deck.
38:26And the sockets.
38:28And the sockets.
38:28And the sockets.
38:29And we like it.
38:30Yeah.
38:32We're just a little bit worried about the price, though.
38:34Look, it is an auction.
38:37Really, the window around this home could land at maybe around that 950, which is slightly
38:44above what you'd like to spend.
38:45We can't predict what's going to happen.
38:47You don't know until you try.
38:50That's true.
38:51Why not give it a crack?
38:52Exactly.
38:53What do you reckon, Jane?
38:54Should we give it a crack?
38:56Yeah, I want to.
38:57This could be your new home.
38:59Yeah.
39:00How are you feeling?
39:01A bit nervous, no?
39:04Another set of happy house hunters.
39:07Nice work, buddy.
39:09Fingers crossed, this could be the place where their next chapter begins.
39:17Wherever you are on your property journey, choosing the right home for the next chapter
39:25can be anything but straightforward.
39:29But eventually, you find your own way of navigating the obstacles, whatever they may be.
39:35Lee and Larry want to move from their boat to dry land.
39:38And apart from a slight hesitation from Lee, house three seem to really hit the mark.
39:44Oh, here's Jane.
39:46Hello.
39:46Here I am.
39:46How are you?
39:47How are you?
39:49Oh, very good.
39:49Very good.
39:50We're good, yeah.
39:51This weather today is crazy.
39:53I was thinking of you last night hunkering down in the yacht.
39:57Everything okay?
39:57She handles this sort of weather perfectly.
40:00Oh, good to hear.
40:01I'm dying to know how I did after our little tour of the three properties that I showed you
40:09this week.
40:10Property number one.
40:14Quite nice and spacious inside.
40:15It was spacious.
40:16But I felt a bit sort of crammed in either side of us.
40:20Yeah.
40:21Yeah.
40:21Now, property number two.
40:23I liked it because it was standing by itself, but only one bathroom was a big one for me.
40:31I'd like two if I can.
40:33Okay.
40:33Okay.
40:34Property number three.
40:37I can't get property number three out of my head.
40:43Yes.
40:43Yes.
40:43Yes.
40:44It's absolutely everything I wanted, except it's four bedrooms.
40:51What's an extra bedroom amongst friends?
40:54An extra bedroom isn't the be all and end all of everything.
40:56It is a good problem to have.
40:57Yep.
40:57And then, of course, the price.
41:00That was not what I was thinking.
41:03I could tell.
41:03Thousands less.
41:04Lots of thousands less.
41:06Well, I'm thrilled to know that one of the properties really resonated with you guys.
41:10The agent rang me this morning to see what your interest level was.
41:13We are very interested.
41:14We're very interested.
41:14I think we'd have to do a little bit more homework on the marina.
41:19If they do get any offers, would you like me to keep you in the loop?
41:22I think that would be a good idea.
41:24All right.
41:24Thank you very much for all your help.
41:26It's been really good fun this week.
41:28Yeah, you've definitely kept me on my toes.
41:31Here's to your next adventure, wherever that may be.
41:34Cheers.
41:36They're not quite ready to put pen to paper just yet,
41:39but the good news is, after looking at a variety of options,
41:43Lee and Larry are much clearer on what they really want
41:46and where they want to be.
41:49The dire whanau want a place to call home in Aotearoa.
41:54House 1 showed potential, but had one sticking point.
41:57The bedrooms are too small.
42:00House 3, on the other hand, seemed to tick all the boxes.
42:04Oh.
42:05Hello there.
42:05Hello.
42:06How are you?
42:07I'm excited.
42:09Oh, good.
42:09How are you going?
42:10I'm excited.
42:12We're nervous.
42:13Right.
42:14I reckon we should unpack all this.
42:16Yeah, OK.
42:16Don't worry, the session's free.
42:18Hopefully, it won't cost you too much, if you know what I mean.
42:22Yeah.
42:22Talk me through property number one.
42:25Property number one was within the area that we're already in,
42:28which that was great.
42:29And there was definitely that wow factor when we arrived
42:32with the big yards and the lovely big windows.
42:36Unfortunately, the bedrooms were just a little bit small
42:39and not any built-in storage, so we kind of discounted it initially.
42:44Initially.
42:45But we re-evaluated after the second viewing.
42:48Yeah.
42:48And we thought, well, we could turn that third bedroom into a dressing room,
42:52so we could put cupboards in there for all the clothes.
42:55When you start to move furniture around and imagine yourself in a space,
42:59that's a good emotional connection.
43:01Yeah.
43:01It is.
43:02Yeah.
43:02And then I surprised you with a bit of a journey
43:07outside of your postcode in your comfort zone.
43:11Yeah.
43:12Talk us through property number two.
43:15Loved the house.
43:17Loved the land.
43:17But I think it underlined how important the postcode was for us.
43:22Like, being near our friends, our Kiwi family.
43:24Yeah.
43:24And it wasn't until we saw that second house
43:26that really...
43:28Secured that for us.
43:29Yes, yeah.
43:30It's good to have that confirmation
43:33of where you know you need to be.
43:37That segues really nicely into property number three
43:39because property number three is a short walk to the property.
43:42It is a very short walk, yes.
43:43We liked property number three.
43:48Very much.
43:49It was that welcoming deck and the entertaining space
43:52and being able to have friends over.
43:54It's really close to everything, so it's, yeah, pretty ideal.
43:58So, if we park property number two
44:01and we've got property number one and property number three,
44:04was there a conclusion between those two properties?
44:08Yes and no.
44:10We're actually going to go to auction on Tuesday
44:13for property number three.
44:14So, we're trying to get our ducks in a row here.
44:16Fantastic.
44:17At the moment.
44:17And if that doesn't work out,
44:21we're looking at property one as well.
44:23I think that's the first time on the show
44:26I've actually had a win and a backup win.
44:31Yeah.
44:31Oh, well, we're glad to do it for you.
44:34I hope you can make Tuesday.
44:35I can make Tuesday.
44:36I can make Tuesday.
44:36The Dyers gave it a good go at the auction for house number three,
44:43but it wasn't their day in the end.
44:45They decided to move on from property number one,
44:48but that's not the end of their house hunting journey.
44:51They've just bought a three-bedroom home in Mount Wellington
44:53with plenty of entertaining space
44:55and a dog park just over the road for Ginny.
44:58Here's to the Dyers' next exciting chapter.
45:00As for Lee and Larry,
45:06house number three didn't quite seal the deal
45:09and their search is on pause
45:10while they take a break in Australia.
45:12When they return,
45:13they'll be ready to hit the ground running
45:15with fresh eyes
45:16and a real sense of what home could look like.

45:45Tamaki Makoto has to offer.
45:47Wow, look at that view.
45:49Oh, my goodness.
45:49You'll see view.
45:50With a few surprises along the way.
45:52It's just incredible.
45:54This is the house that keeps on delivering.
45:56Yeah.
45:57They're each ready to find the place
45:59where their next adventure begins.
