00:00Hi!
00:04Hi!
00:06Hi!
00:08Hi!
00:10Hi!
00:12Hi!
00:14Hi!
00:16Hi!
00:18Hi!
00:20Hi!
00:22Sit, sit, sit on down!
00:24Sit on down! I gotta say,
00:26you guys, normally Cam got the most going on
00:28with his fit, but I think you might be outnumbered.
00:30I'm son of the day. This a light day.
00:32You look like you just walked out of
00:34sinners or something. No, no, no, no.
00:36See, you tried it. That's right. What?
00:38Alright? See,
00:40I just tried to emulate
00:42me making a message with my outfit.
00:44You know what I'm saying? I get it
00:46out the mud, huh?
00:48Don't let the... Listen, I had to get it out
00:50the mud today, but we gonna have fun
00:52today. We sure are. We gonna have
00:54fun, so make sure you
00:56sit back, relax,
00:58and turn up. That's right.
01:00Uh, listen, in
01:02all of the excitement of this beautiful crowd,
01:04I forgot to say, welcome to 106
01:06in Sports, where we, yes,
01:08where we are counting down
01:10these top five moments in sports that
01:12matter to the culture. I am Ashley
01:14Nicole Moss. And I am Cam Newton.
01:16Outside of the beautiful crowd
01:18that we have tonight, we also have a packed
01:20show as well, because tennis royalty
01:22Taylor Townsend is in the building.
01:24Oh, yeah.
01:26Yeah.
01:28And to solve, you know, my
01:30dog, playing partner one and
01:32only, DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is here
01:34as well. Yes. And also,
01:36you guys, um, have the same nickname,
01:38Boogie. Boogie. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:40Boogie, Boogie, Boogie. It's gonna be going
01:42down the day. So please
01:44act accordingly, Ashley. You're already on
01:46strike one, alright? I have no
01:48problem getting strike two and three.
01:50Listen, plus a lot more.
01:52But before we get started with the countdown.
01:54That's right too, just, just, just, just, just,
01:56because you're trying to, you're trying to big
01:58dogs on national TV, huh?
02:00But before we get started
02:02with the countdown, here are some of our
02:04favorite highlights from this week.
02:06This past weekend, Fam U and Alabama
02:08A&M gave us a great one.
02:10Fam pulled out a 26
02:12to 23 win behind a big day from
02:14R.J. Johnson. The
02:16third, he threw for 290. Now, dang,
02:20you couldn't get one more yard to get the 300?
02:22Oh, block? Ah!
02:24But he made it up with three touchdowns.
02:26Uh, the Bills and the Bucks also
02:28gave us a straight up banger on
02:30Sunday, and Josh Allen did what
02:32Josh Allen does best, and that is
02:34put on an absolute show, breaking
02:36another one of Cam Newton's
02:38records.
02:40No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
02:42no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:44It's okay. It is okay.
02:46I'm not gonna be the one that's gonna
02:48hate. I'm gonna be the one to
02:50congratulate. We love that.
02:52Come on now.
02:54After weeks of waiting and questions
02:56and nonstop controversies,
02:58Shador Sanders finally got his
03:00first real taste of the NFL.
03:02We know you had
03:04some strong feelings about
03:06what you saw, what you didn't see, the
03:08position that the Browns are
03:10not putting Shador in. Yeah.
03:12Do you want to give us a little bit, a little bit of a sprinkling
03:14on your thought process?
03:16You can say all the right things in front these cameras.
03:18Mm-hmm. But I don't
03:20listen to those things if I, if you're
03:22showing me different. Well.
03:24Kevin Stefanski for me has shown
03:26time and time again that he does not want
03:28Shador Sanders to succeed.
03:30And it's evident.
03:32When reports has it that the
03:34offensive line, that was the
03:36first time that he got reps
03:38with them in a live
03:40game? Hold on.
03:42When you look at what Shador Sanders brings
03:44to the NFL
03:46platform, you look at what Shador Sanders brings
03:48to the Cleveland Browns.
03:50It's evident that he is
03:52extremely talented, but it still
03:54is needed when you need
03:56reps, when you need help. And I don't think
03:58he's getting that. Not adequately.
04:00So then you start to say, Kevin Stefanski
04:02says publicly, well
04:04Dylan Gabriel
04:06is still our guy. Mm-hmm.
04:08He's still having even clear
04:10concussion protocol. This is true.
04:12Don't tell me what you, don't tell me
04:14what you think I want to hear. Or, or, or
04:16like my daughter say, don't tell me what you
04:18thought I wanted to hear. Huh?
04:20Tell me, like show me. Huh? I'm from Missouri
04:22by way of Atlanta, Georgia. Wakanda. Huh?
04:24I go by what you show.
04:26Then you start to say, well, he didn't get
04:28no reps with the first team. Well, then
04:30let me, let me, let me, let me, let me,
04:32let me, let me, let me, let me. Let me
04:34bring it back even to more. I'm trying to take
04:36you somewhere now. I'm on the ride.
04:38The insufficiency that Shador is
04:40being dealt versus what Dylan Gabriel.
04:42He said he don't get no reps with the first
04:44team because Dylan Gabriel need all the reps, right?
04:46Well, you just had Joe Flacco early
04:48in the season, right? Right. Did Dylan Gabriel
04:50get any reps as a second team? He did.
04:52As a second team quarterback, he got first team reps
04:56when Joe Flacco was the quote unquote starter.
04:58So don't tell me you don't give a backup
05:02opportunity when you were given a backup opportunity
05:06when the situations was different. Let the church
05:08say amen. Amen.
05:10Stop me when I, when I, when I tell a lie.
05:12I will say though points were made. Absolutely.
05:16But we cannot negate the fact that although it wasn't the most ideal
05:20situation, his dad, Deion Sanders was extremely emotional seeing his son
05:24get his NFL star. And he said that he cried when he watched it. So although
05:28it wasn't ideal, it did mean a lot to Deion to see his son out there living his dream.
05:34So I think that's a positive in the situation, no?
05:36If I'm Deion Sanders, I see a situation where like,
05:40yes, is he playing? Yes.
05:42But not like in these situations.
05:44Because whether it's management, whether it's a head coach,
05:48I don't give a doggone what it is.
05:50Somebody ain't looking out for my son the way somebody else looking out for somebody else son.
05:55Let the church say amen. Amen.
05:59All right. Well, look, uh, bars were dropped.
06:03And if you could believe it, that's not even our countdown story.
06:06We are now going to get into the countdown. So are you guys ready?
06:09All right. Okay.
06:11Here we go. Today's number five stories about love and basketball.
06:14Clay Thompson is clapping back at people who have something to say
06:18about his relationship with Megan.
06:21Yes.
06:23Clay Thompson shut down former NBA players Jason Williams and Patrick Beverly
06:29after they claimed his relationship with Meg the Stallion was hurting his game.
06:34Clay called their comments, quote, disgusting and disturbing.
06:38And he's making it very clear that Meg isn't the problem.
06:42The way people talk about women is.
06:45I know that's right.
06:48It wasn't just what was said, but how it was said.
06:51Jason Williams said this on his Instagram, quote, it only takes one P.
06:56U.S.
06:57Other letters to drag a battleship across the desert.
07:01That's how powerful it is.
07:02Then Clay then responded on his Instagram saying referring to my girlfriend as a.
07:07It is so disgusting and disturbing, especially from someone who played in the NBA.
07:12How would y'all feel if I refer to your wives in such a way?
07:15He added Pat Bev and said, do better fellas.
07:18Very disappointed.
07:19First of all.
07:21Um, so obviously this story just isn't about celebrity dating.
07:27It's about disrespect.
07:28And I know and Cam, you probably will remember this reference.
07:32It seems as though that women are given the brunt of when an athlete is not doing well.
07:39It's an easy target.
07:40Oh, it's because his girl.
07:41It's because his wife.
07:42You remember the Jessica Simpson curse when Tony Romo was dating her on the Dallas Cowboys.
07:47Every, every bad game Tony Romo had, it was Jessica Simpson's fault.
07:52Every bad game Klay Thompson had, it's Meg Thee Stallion's fault.
07:56Let me make this very clear for people who may not be as engulfed in the NBA as I am.
08:02Um, Klay Thompson has had two major injuries, not one, but two.
08:07Klay Thompson's also over the age of 30, which is young in everyday life.
08:12But in basketball years, it's kind of old and he's getting up there and he's getting older every season.
08:16Okay, so Jesus himself couldn't make Klay Thompson play better than he's playing.
08:21So it's real low hanging fruit to say that his relationship with Meg is a distraction and it's this and it's that.
08:27Last time I checked, Pat Bev was playing overseas.
08:30He's not even in the NBA.
08:31So Pat Bev might want to pull out of this one and mind his business.
08:36I'm just saying.
08:37Yeah, you can't say that.
08:39Just saying.
08:40I can and I did.
08:43What was said, was it wrong?
08:46This is what I think.
08:48At no way, shape, form, am I condoning calling a woman out of their name?
08:53Mm-hmm.
08:54At no shape, form.
08:55Absolutely.
08:56Am I agreeing to call a woman out of their name?
08:58Okay.
08:59See, man, you got to understand, you got to make your point very clear.
09:02There's a but here.
09:05At no way, shape, form.
09:06I heard you the first time.
09:07Am I telling that calling a woman outside of her name is okay?
09:12But what's the but here?
09:14But he ain't doing nothing but doing bro talk.
09:17But you bro talking on a public platform.
09:20Which is cool.
09:21The only issue that I have, you don't refer to her or her goods as any type of explicit.
09:28The message is skewed because at no shape, form.
09:33I heard you.
09:34But bros still talk about bros.
09:39How you do it and to be clear as okay, that's accepted.
09:44That's not accepted.
09:45I felt like they got too comfortable.
09:47And why would their team give a sign off to say, okay, we're going to let that fly.
09:53No, no, no.
09:54Put it out on Twitter.
09:55Put it out on Instagram.
09:56Put it out on YouTube.
09:57No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
09:58You got too comfortable there, bro.
10:00But let me ask you a question.
10:01But to think that that will stop the debate of when dudes talk about dudes or certain situations
10:07in sports.
10:08No, that's not.
10:10I'm not saying it.
10:11If this were a regular shmegular person, but dude, you played in the NBA.
10:15Yeah.
10:16You should know better than that.
10:17Like, let me ask you a question.
10:18Let's shift it to the NFL.
10:20Talk to you.
10:21Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson was benched?
10:24No.
10:25Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson isn't the Russell Wilson we saw in Seattle?
10:28Is it her fault that he wasn't what he was in Pittsburgh now?
10:32Is it her fault that he isn't what he is now in New York and he's not playing?
10:37You know what I'm saying?
10:39So, like, it's low-hanging fruit to blame the wife, to blame the girlfriend,
10:44to blame the significant other, the partner.
10:47It's just low-hanging fruit.
10:48You know dang well it is not Meg's fault that Klay's not playing well.
10:52The man got an Achilles and an ACL injury.
10:55He's over 30 years old.
10:57It's hard out here when you get older in sports.
11:00You know?
11:01Your game's just not the same.
11:02Blaming Meg is wet.
11:05No, I'm just not you know, but you know.
11:10I hear your point.
11:11Bros is gonna talk regardless.
11:15And just like women have their conversations, dudes gonna have their conversations too.
11:21Listen, that's my point.
11:22Two things can be true.
11:24Well, we wanna know what you think is true.
11:27So, for you at home, let us know what you think.
11:30Is Meg affecting Klay's game or is that just foul play?
11:34Join the conversation using the hashtag 106inSports.
11:37Don't go anywhere because still on the show tonight we have your favorite tennis player.
11:42It is Atlanta's very own Taylor Townsend is in the building.
11:46And the always outspoken DeMarcus Briggie Cousins is here as well.
11:49Don't move.
11:504106inSports on the way.
11:53To see news up next in the world of sports, go to BET.com for our next up series presented by Jeep Grand Cherokee.
12:07Welcome back everybody to 106inSports where culture meets the game.
12:14Who's ready to play our first game?
12:16Look, one of the most inspiring athletes in the world of sports on and off the court.
12:23ATL, make some noise for your very own Taylor Townsend!
12:37Taylor, how you doing sweetie pie, honey bunches of balls?
12:54Okay, I'm doing good.
12:56You're welcome.
12:57I just appreciate, um, and get right into it man.
13:01I think what you've been able to display as a strong black woman has been something that us as black people can smile and say thank you for the representation.
13:16Absolutely.
13:17I appreciate that.
13:19Um, we, um, I know you want to talk about this but we saw that front and center at the U.S. Open.
13:24Yeah.
13:25And it wasn't, I don't even want to say her name.
13:28The, the quote was, no class, no education.
13:33And it was one of the things that the world saw.
13:36Yeah.
13:37As if to say she was trying to check you but, oh you big man.
13:42But, go ahead.
13:43That's honestly what I thought.
13:45I was like, oh you're mad for real.
13:47Um, but I honestly have been, I grew up being told let your racket talk.
13:53And that's what I said.
13:54It's not the first time that this has happened.
13:57Not the second, not the third.
13:59With her specifically or just in general?
14:00With her specifically, even with other players.
14:02But honestly like, she picked the right one.
14:04It wasn't even just black people or black women.
14:07It was like Americans too because there was that thing she said about America and everyone was like, wait, hold on now.
14:12Yeah, like what?
14:13Slow down now.
14:14When you hear these words come out a black person's mouth.
14:17All right now.
14:18Yeah.
14:19It, it, it, it could go any way.
14:21It was a beautiful fire like on so many different levels.
14:24And I think that was the crazy thing about it.
14:25I think that's the beautiful thing about tennis too.
14:27It's like when you have a game that intertwines America with all these different countries.
14:32Yeah.
14:33It's like America really rallies behind their own in moments like that.
14:35And I thought that was dope to see.
14:37I love hearing you talk about life after motherhood and, and that adjustment.
14:41And, you know, falling in love with your body again.
14:44Yeah.
14:45And how honest you've been.
14:46Because that's something that Naomi Osaka has been.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Very honest about.
14:49And she's, you know, been honest about her struggles with postpartum.
14:51Yeah.
14:52And how that's affected her game.
14:53You two were on a boat recently.
14:54Yeah.
14:55And, you know, one vile of you guys doing the Nicki Minaj challenge.
14:57Yes.
14:58Which we love to see.
14:59But I want you to kind of talk to me about that friendship, that relationship.
15:03But also how important it is to kind of knock down that barrier.
15:06Like there's enough space for all of us.
15:08And we all can kind of help each other in that space.
15:11Because only us as black women in spaces where there's not that many of us can understand each other's struggle.
15:17Yeah.
15:18I mean, it's funny that, you know, you say that because the, the invite was so random.
15:24Like we had spoken to each other maybe once or twice.
15:28Really?
15:29Before this trip.
15:30Wow.
15:31Yeah.
15:32And, you know, one of the times we had a very, like, intimate moment in the locker room in Cincinnati after she had just come off the court.
15:39And I just went up to her and hugged her and I was like, you're going to be all right.
15:42Literally, that's all I said.
15:44She was crying.
15:45She, you know, I could tell that she wasn't happy.
15:47I was like, girl, you going to be fine.
15:48That's literally like what I said.
15:50And so she invited me to the vacation.
15:53And I was just like, at first, it was the same.
15:55Like kind of weird.
15:56Like, I don't know you like that.
15:57Yeah.
15:58It was the same thing.
15:59Right, right, right.
16:00What's up?
16:01Yeah.
16:02Like, what we got going on here, you know, because it was so random.
16:04And that also has like never happened.
16:07But when I went and like literally told her, I was like, I'm telling you, we're going to be in the same places and I'm going to come watch you play.
16:15She said, yeah, me too.
16:16It's not often that you see two people in the same draws of the same tournament, different places in the event, going and supporting each other.
16:25And I was like, I really feel like this is an opportunity for us to like shake the room a little bit.
16:30Yeah, and like be front and center, but it's not an act.
16:33It's so authentic and genuinely like I want to support you and you want to support me.
16:39Well, Taylor is not going anywhere because we're still counting down our top five moments.
16:43I hope everybody is ready for number four.
16:45Okay.
16:46Yeah.
16:47It is all about a new documentary that has been going viral on social media.
16:52Now, even if you don't know who this player is, now I do being a New Yorker because he was king in New York.
16:58The headline is very startling.
17:00All over social media, the clip and headline to the doc says from $20 million NBA career to moving back into the projects.
17:08And it's about Sebastian Taylor.
17:10Athletes, at some point you stop playing and the money looks a lot different.
17:15And there are some people who make that adjustment and they make that adjustment seamlessly and they're kind of prepared for it for life after football, after tennis, after basketball.
17:25And then there are people who struggle with life after that.
17:28What is your standpoint on this or your take on this rather?
17:31You know, I can, I can speak on my experience.
17:34Um, I haven't had an endorsement.
17:37I just got a racket deal for the first time in eight years.
17:40I'm self funding my clothing line.
17:44Wow.
17:45To sponsor myself.
17:46I started that in May and I have for the last eight years, nine years, I've bought my own clothes, shoes, you know, I am just now getting in a position where deals are coming in.
18:02And with tennis, if you don't have that backing or those sponsorships or whatever, you're literally living off of your prize money.
18:12So what you make.
18:13You have to win.
18:14And what you make.
18:15And if you're not.
18:16Right.
18:17You're in the red.
18:18Right.
18:19And so my output was very, is, is very, very heavy because a lot of, all of my expenses come out of my pocket.
18:28And you made that transition.
18:31Um, Taylor talks about thinking about that transition way before the time is ready to come.
18:36I wonder though, when did you have the conversation with yourself, with your team that I got to really start thinking about life after football and how did you prepare yourself to be in a lucrative position after you stopped playing in the NFL?
18:49I just want to educate people to how a situation like this happened.
18:54Okay.
18:55Because people find out or they see $20 million.
18:59Mm-hmm.
19:00How you got $20 million and you back in the project?
19:03Not all on the bank, of course, when you get that 20 M's.
19:06Sometimes it may.
19:07Sometimes it is.
19:08But the old T word that us people need to understand, taxes.
19:15Mm-hmm.
19:16That's number one.
19:17And number two, if your output is way more than your input, your output will be the reason why you go broke.
19:26Mm-hmm.
19:27All right, Taylor.
19:28We want to play a little game that we call, and I need the crowd's help to repeat after me.
19:33It's called start.
19:34Start.
19:35Bitch.
19:36Bitch.
19:37Trade.
19:38Trade.
19:39I'm going to walk over to the fan zone to do that.
19:42All right.
19:43Let's go.
19:44Okay, okay, hello.
19:49Look, okay, so this is how the game works.
19:51Okay.
19:52We're going to give you three names, and you're going to start one, bench one, or trade one.
19:57Round one, these are our options for doubles, but new school.
20:01We got Coco Gauff.
20:02Okay.
20:03We got Naomi Osaka.
20:04Okay.
20:05And we have Sloane Steven.
20:06That's tough.
20:07I'm going to start Coco.
20:08Okay.
20:09She's still playing doubles right now.
20:11I think I would bench Sloane.
20:14Okay.
20:15I've played with Sloane before.
20:16We've done well together.
20:17Yeah.
20:18And I love Naomi.
20:20I'm sorry, but I got to try.
20:21I was about to say, y'all just was on vacation together.
20:23Hey, ma'am.
20:24A good boat partner doesn't make a good double.
20:26Yes, because I've actually asked her to play, and she's like, yeah, no.
20:31Our last category, Cam, you're going to like this one.
20:34Who do you call for a clapback?
20:36We have Atlanta's very own NeNe Leakes.
20:38Queens' very own 50 Cent.
20:41And we got the boogie down Bronx' very own Cardi V.
20:45Okay.
20:47For a clapback?
20:48For a clapback.
20:49You got a clapback.
20:50I got a troll, a hater.
20:51Okay.
20:52Anyone.
20:53Could have used them at the US Open to give you some backup.
20:55Hot take?
20:56I'm taking 50 Cent.
20:5750 Cent.
20:58Yeah, 50 Cent.
20:59Not even.
21:00He's a professional troll.
21:01I'm starting him.
21:02Okay.
21:03And also, he's a businessman, so he understands when it's too much.
21:06Like, okay, I can go there.
21:08Yeah.
21:09But then he knows kind of like how to pull it back sometimes.
21:10Okay.
21:11I've never seen that.
21:12I know.
21:13I ain't never seen 50 Cent.
21:14The shots might hit.
21:15The shots hit.
21:16No.
21:17All of them hit.
21:18Okay.
21:19Okay.
21:20He over here trying to sledgehammer with an egg every time.
21:23Okay.
21:24Well, that's who I want on my team.
21:25So, I'm going to bitch Cardi.
21:28Okay.
21:29And I'm going to trade NeNe.
21:30Okay.
21:31Yeah.
21:32Okay.
21:33That's what I think.
21:34Well, Taylor, look, before we let you go, anything that you have coming up that we should
21:37keep our eyes and ears open for?
21:39What's in the works?
21:40Give us a little sneak peek.
21:42Um, in the near future, I'm just excited to spend some time with my son.
21:46I mean, I was gone for seven weeks.
21:48And so, like, just being able to be home and be settled before having to pack up and
21:52be in the suitcase.
21:53But my first tournament, I'm starting down in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
21:57And down under.
21:58Yeah, down under.
22:00Ms. Townsend, thank you.
22:03Yes.
22:04Please keep going.
22:05For sure.
22:06Because it's not a lot of us that's out there that can really resonate.
22:10Yeah.
22:11And the fact that you stay true and are staying true to yourself.
22:15Chef's kiss.
22:16Thank you, darling.
22:17Atlanta, make some noise for your very own.
22:23The 4106 in sports is on the way.
22:27Make sure you do not move because DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is in the building and you do
22:32not want to miss this conversation.
22:36Come on!
22:37Welcome back, everybody!
22:38To 106 in sports where culture meets the game.
22:53Pam had to leave the couch to go over there to show that side of the room some love.
22:59love but this isn't because our number three topic on today's countdown is all about Texas A&M
23:05versus South Carolina. They had a moment that took over the weekend when a Texas State trooper
23:11was caught on video bumping into South Carolina players in the tunnel then stepping toward them
23:18like they wanted or he wanted the smoke. Now the clip went instantly viral and had everybody talking
23:26including LeBron who called for his job. LeBron James reposted the clip and said that the troopers
23:32should be suspended immediately calling the whole thing quote corny and questioning why an officer
23:37would escalate a moment with college kids to begin with. Stephen A. Smith also tweeted that the incident
23:43was quote unacceptable and that the officer also needed to be held accountable and that the optics
23:50of the arms trooper confronting players are a very bad look for everyone involved. Cam I will say
23:58this he is also very lucky that those kids were raised correctly and didn't retaliate because if
24:08someone pushes you your first instinct is to kind of defend yourself and push back. Those kids took
24:12the higher route and walked away. This is what we've seen in rest in peace to the likes of the George
24:19Floyd's of the world. Rest in peace to the individuals that were senselessly killed because
24:25the police brutality that they had the authority to do so. They took it too far. When you have
24:32individuals like Colin Kaepernick taking a knee not to be rebellious it's to bring light to an issue
24:38that is still evident in this country. So you can't tell me in College Station Texas that that specific
24:48officer thinks that African-Americans are his favorite? No there's definitely there's definitely
24:53an ulterior underlining issue with him for sure because nobody reacts like that just unprovoked or
25:00unless that's already in their spirit. I absolutely agree with that for sure. That's all I'm saying it's like
25:05racism is still evident but let's let's highlight individuals that are bad individuals. That officer
25:17is a bad individual. Absolutely. And he should not have a job because if he's a deputy if he's a sheriff
25:23if he's a person of high regard now everybody up under him is being taught by a bad individual
25:31and that's the issue that's the key. So for that it's it's extremely frustrating that here we are in
25:402025 so much has been sacrificed even dating back to I have a dream. We're still living in a moment
25:49where bad individuals exist and we need to control alt delete these bad individuals
25:56from having an opportunity to impact. Absolutely. Look when we come back DeMarcus Cousins is here
26:03so don't move because more 106 in Sports is coming up.
26:18Hello everybody and welcome back to 106 in Sports where culture meets the game.
26:24We are so excited about our next guest. Let me make sure I get all these accolades correct. All right
26:29four-time all-star Olympic gold medalist and walking double double. Absolutely. 106 make some noise for my dog DeMarcus
26:39Boogie Cousins.
26:44How are you? How are you? How are you? There you go. Let's do it. Boogie meet Boogie. You dig what I'm saying? Feel me?
26:59Um for people who don't know how did you get the nickname Boogie? Walk us through that. Cam won't tell me the origin of his nickname.
27:04You never asked. I did ask. Say less. I'll give it to you. What's the origin of yours?
27:08Uh I got the name Boogie uh my freshman year, well my only year at Kentucky. Okay.
27:12I had a coach by the name of Rod Strickland, NBA legend. When we would describe basketball players we were like you know
27:18do they got certain like Boogie in their game or something like that. So I was one of those guys he considered that had a lot of Boogie in his game.
27:24Okay. Then the name ended up sticking. Is that how you got your nickname? No no I had to give myself an alter ego.
27:30Like because one thing about it bro. DeMarcus can't play basketball and be effective. That's fine.
27:37You have to give yourself a license to be okay. This is the person that's the bad guy. This is the guy that is from Atlanta. Huh?
27:46And I gave myself grace to say okay Cam is one person. Boogie is the other person that I'm going to give that person that grace to
27:55really be the show star. Did you feel that way when you were playing that DeMarcus was one person
27:59and Boogie was a completely different person? Absolutely. Okay.
28:03You know that's kind of part of my issue. Like
28:06for the most part when the average person is watching you play or perform or you know do your art
28:11they only see you in that in that form. So they start to believe that's exactly who you are as a person.
28:17And I'll be the first to admit when I'm on the floor I'm an animal. Like I'm ready to rip your head off.
28:22I'm gonna do whatever it takes to win the game. But once that you know once the clock hits zero and
28:27I'm off the court like I'm a totally different person. There's no difference than you know Beyonce
28:32when she on stage and she refers to herself as Sasha Fears. You know what I'm saying? It's all the same
28:36thing and you know when it comes to you know people trying to figure out who you are as a person like
28:42I said that that can cause some sort of an issue if the person doesn't understand who you are off the floor.
28:48Uh I had to find out the hard way. A couple years ago we was in a creator league. So I was like who are
28:54gonna be there? They started listing down a list of people or this person that person. I'm like Boogie Cousins.
29:00I'll bet. Right? But before my team played this team he had just got finished serving
29:07another team. It was like yo he damn that scored all the points.
29:11But who would be? I said he'll never do that on me. On mama now.
29:15And what'd he do? Score all the points on me. On mom and I say hold on, hold on, hold on,
29:21hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. I knew the type of way that I needed to play him was not gonna
29:26be safe for that situation. I wasn't trying to be physical as much but I wasn't trying to get
29:31embarrassed either. Which leads me to this point. A couple weeks ago we had an individual by the name of
29:37Brittany Griner. And I asked her that same question. Could she beat Boogie Cousins in one-on-one?
29:47I definitely I went on the record and said that I would beat DeMarcus Cousins in a game with a
29:52referee. Yes. I'm the one that's gonna ask the question. Could she beat you in one-on-one?
29:59Hell no. But what would be... Short and sweet, hell no. But is there a world where you see
30:10a woman beating a man in basketball? Absolutely. And it's... But it's just not her with you?
30:16No, I'm different. So I'm separate. When you think about the game of basketball, it's thought about in
30:22different ways. You know, it could be thought about in the aspect of one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three,
30:28five-on-five, whatever the case may be. There's some people that are brilliant in the game of five-on-five
30:34and also atrocious in one-on-one at the same time. You know what I'm saying? So when you think about it
30:38like that and you break the game down like that, absolutely, I think a woman could win. Absolutely.
30:43You actually forgot to tell the full part of the story when you played DeMarcus in the Creator League.
30:48He dropped you. And you dropped your hat. I dropped you for sure. Okay, so hold on. Matter of fact,
30:54give me your explanation of what you mean by dropping. You hit the floor and your hat followed. No.
31:01That sound like a drop to me. No, no, no, no, no, no. Who takes a charge at the three-point line?
31:05Ooh. Listen, who takes a charge in general? I was trying to get the ball back, brother.
31:11And I was losing all type of options. So I said, let me just take a charge. You are admitting you
31:17dropped and hit the floor. No. Oh, well, listen. Okay. But how I got there was different. A drop was
31:24a drop. But speaking of drop, we're going to keep it moving with our countdown because in at number
31:28two, it is all about somebody who was dropped from the Dallas Mavericks. Sheesh. We're talking
31:34about Nico Harrison. The Dallas Mavericks recently fired the GM after a disastrous run of players'
31:40trades and injuries that left the team spiraling. Most notably, the trading of Luka Doncic to the
31:47Lakers for Anthony Davis. A lot of us were just taken aback that you would trade away a player
31:52of Luka's magnitude, especially when the Dallas Mavericks were just fresh off of the Western
31:57Conference Finals. Yeah. So it had a lot of people wondering if there were underlining issues between
32:03Nico and Luka. Because if you remember, everything that could possibly defame a player's reputation,
32:10his work ethic, seemed to just be coming out of the woodwork once that trade happened as a way to
32:16justify it. A lot of people were calling for Nico's job back then. He made it seem,
32:20you remember, he went on this entire media tour. The team got better. This was a better decision.
32:26And the Mavs aren't doing that well. So what do you make of this entire situation?
32:29When it's a move this big, it's no way it doesn't come from the higher-ups. Obviously,
32:35Nico is the GM of the Mavericks. Well, it was the GM. But everybody has somebody that they have to
32:40answer to. But the issue also is there were injuries that took place. Kyrie Irving,
32:46right, for example. Anthony Davis. Now, if you add in, if those things went right, would he still have
32:53a job? I do think on paper, you know, when you look at the roster after the trade, it looked good.
32:58You know, was it a championship team? That's, you know, that's still in the air. But that's the only
33:03part I don't like about the firing of Nico is he didn't really get an opportunity for his plan to,
33:09you know, come to work. So if you were going to fire him, the firing should have happened after Luca,
33:13not after the trade where he doesn't get to see if the trade works or not. Like,
33:18you're already in it. You might as well stick it. You might as well see what happens. Okay.
33:21As a person who was the face of a franchise, a lottery pick, a person that really moved the
33:29needle for a franchise, when you see a situation like Ja Morant take place,
33:34explain what would be a message that you would have for a Ja? Well, one, I put my arm around him.
33:40You can tell he's in need of real veteran presence. But that's, that's one of my issues with the league.
33:45You bring in these young talents from all types of backgrounds, and the people that are bringing
33:50the talents in don't relate to these kids from these different backgrounds. So the moment it
33:56becomes uncomfortable for the, you know, the person that brought them in, they automatically get a bad
34:00label. When in actuality, you just can't relate. Our foundation is different from those coming from,
34:06we're going to just label it a PWI. Once that situation comes to a head, it's going to always be
34:11a difference. And I think that's what we're looking at now. Well, we want to know what you all think.
34:16So make sure you're using the hashtag 106 in sports. And coming up, the number one topic,
34:22plus more from our very own DeMarcus Cousins. Make sure you don't move because more 106 in sports is
34:28coming up. Welcome back, everybody, to 106 in sports. We have reached the number one story in our
34:46countdown. But before we get into that, recently, there was a story about LaMelo Ball. And when he
34:51was going through the draft process, he had sat down with the Timberwolves and they asked him, hey,
34:56what do you want to do when you retire from the NBA? And he said, I want to be president of the United
35:02States. That's right. Okay, listen, high aspirations. But they basically said that that was something they
35:09used to determine that he was not the player for their organization. They ended up drafting Anthony
35:15Edwards, which worked out phenomenal. Ant-Man, we love him, Atlanta's very own. But the question I
35:20really have for the both of you, is there too much emphasis on the ridiculous questions, the
35:27non-sports related questions when it comes to the draft process in determining whether or not a player
35:33is ready to either play or lead your organization? Boogie, I'll start with you. I think it's yes and no.
35:38You got to remember, this is a billion dollar business. So they're deciding on who they're
35:42willing to invest their money on. So they want to know everything about you from your favorite color
35:46to your favorite food to who your favorite elementary school teacher was. It does get a bit
35:51ridiculous sometimes in the interviews. And I've witnessed it firsthand. So I know. But at the same
35:57time, it also makes sense. It's no different than qualifying for another job. Your thoughts on the
36:02obviously a little bit different from the NBA, but it's still a draft process. And we've seen stories
36:06come out about the ridiculous questions that- Jim Harbaugh. He was with the 49ers. And he asked me,
36:14jumped like straight into it. You know, we sat down, shook hands, cool. He said,
36:19hey, we drafted your daddy going to be an issue. I said, what? He just came and flat out asked me that
36:27question. And now given the climate of the question, I went through an NCAA investigation,
36:33allegedly, and came out unscathed. But the reality of that was they do that because they can,
36:42but I get why they do. They need to see if they're going to get an ROI. Well, for the people who don't
36:49understand what that is, they want to see if they're going to get a return on their investment.
36:52You both mentioned the money involved in professional sports, which leads us to the
36:57number one topic of the week. And that is all about Steph Curry. After 13 years, he is parting ways
37:04with Under Armour and the Curry brand is going independent. When you see this type of situation
37:11happen with player representation, do you see more players getting involved with representing
37:17themselves from the apparel side? I think it is something that's happening. It's been a few
37:22guys that kind of come out on their own and try to create their own brand. I think the biggest right
37:26now would probably be someone like Jalen Brown with his own brand in Boston. But I think it's,
37:31I think it's a dope thing. You can kind of compare it to the music business.
37:35Demarcus, before we let you go, I know you're now in the media game and you said you are loving it.
37:41How do you balance being an athlete and having to critique athletes? And is it ever uncomfortable
37:47for you because you are part of the brotherhood? You don't say certain things. Can I ask it?
37:52You go ahead, ask it. Have you ever got the he's bitter or he's hating? Yeah. From players? From a
37:59player? Never. It's coming. It probably is. I'm telling you. No, I believe it. And I've seen you also
38:04have to kind of go through that. I'm there. Like my man back there in the back was like, yo bro,
38:08I'm team Gilly over here. We Philadelphia Eagles fans. And I'm like, yo. I am a Jalen Hurts fan,
38:13by the way. Roll Tide. Uh oh. I don't appreciate that. Oh. Nah, nah. I'm glad we went there. But what
38:19college did you go to, brother? I went to Kentucky. Thank you. Where was I born? So he set tripping
38:24those. You know what I'm saying? I'm set tripping. You got to pick a set at birth,
38:27Auburn or Alabama. Yeah, brother. It's all right. We beat them too. You know what I'm saying? Y'all got one rinky dink.
38:32That's okay. Blinky dink. Stinky dink is all matter. That thing's still blinky dink. Look,
38:37that's going to do it for us here at 106 in sports. Big thank you to our guests. First and
38:42foremost, Taylor Townsend, Atlanta's very own. And DeMarcus Boogie Cousins, make sure you hit us
38:47up using the hashtag 106 in sports. As usual, Cam, you have the last word. Oh, everybody stand up.
38:53Okay, here we go. Hey, in this good faith of speaking life into each other,
38:59I will challenge everybody to repeat after me. Hey, you. Hey, you. Hey, you. Hey, you. I love you.
39:08I love you. I love you. And as I always say, one hand out, one finger, one pinky, one thumb,
39:15all together, one love. 106 in sports. We out of here.
39:29Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
