00:00You know, I think that there has been this sense over the last several years that literally anything goes.
00:09Former President Barack Obama revealed the meaning behind the title of his new book
00:13and his advice to President Trump in a new interview with 60 Minutes.
00:17The former president revealed that the book title, A Promised Land, is indicative of his hope for the country,
00:22saying, even though we may not get there in our lifetimes,
00:25even if we experience hardships and disappointments along the way,
00:28I at least still have faith we can create a more perfect union.
00:34Not a perfect union, but a more perfect union.
00:36In the interview, he also opened up about some parts of his book,
00:39including writing about wife Michelle Obama's objection to his decision to run for president way back when,
00:44when she said, as he writes in the book, the answer is no.
00:47When asked why he still chose to run despite her objections, he noted it was a legitimate question,
00:52saying that his presidential run came after a series of other races,
00:55including his successful run for U.S. Senate and his failed run for Congress two years before that.
01:01Not to mention, they had two young daughters, and Michelle was working full-time.
01:05Over time, she made a conclusion,
01:07I shouldn't stand in the way of this.
01:08She did so grudgingly, and the fact that I ended up winning didn't necessarily alleviate her frustrations,
01:13because the toll it takes on families is real.
01:15The fact that she put up with it and forgave me,
01:18it was an act of grace that I'm grateful for, and I'm not sure I deserved it.
01:22Obama also wrote about his last day as president in his book,
01:24where he revealed that he left a note to Trump that read in part,
01:28We are just temporary occupants of this office.
01:30It's up to us to leave the instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.
01:35However, he notes in the book that he felt like he was leaving the presidency
01:38in the hands of someone diametrically opposed to everything we stood for.
01:42I don't see him as the cause for our divisions and the problems with our government.
01:48I think he's an accelerant, but they preceded him and sadly are going to likely outlast him.
01:56As for his advice to Trump, Obama noted that the former doesn't like to lose and never admits loss,
02:01but he said that he should concede and refrain from making any more accusations about voter fraud without evidence.
02:07A president is a public servant. They are temporary occupants of the office by design.
02:13And when your time is up, then it is your job to put the country first
02:16and think beyond your own ego, your own interests, and your own disappointments.
02:20My advice to President Trump is if you want at this late stage in the game
02:25to be remembered as somebody who put country first, it's time for you to do the same thing.
02:31A promised land hits bookshelves on November 17th.
