00:00Jeff Kirkshen at the 2025 CMAs with Steven Wilson Jr.
00:07What's going on, brother?
00:09I'm here.
00:09Gotta say, right off the bat, amazing shirt.
00:12Face the camera, show everybody what you're rocking.
00:15A little Bob Ross painting the Golden Girls.
00:17It's a velvet cake of a shirt.
00:19So, fun fact, my co-host, Andy, of The Andy Summer Show,
00:23her dog's name, Bob Ross.
00:25Hell yeah, that's a great name.
00:27It's got the afro.
00:28It's such a perfect dog name.
00:31So, Bob Ross, Bob Ross, it's kind of perfect.
00:33He's kind of like a spirit animal on our show.
00:35So, like, having that, this is the first time we met,
00:37you chose that shirt, I don't know.
00:39I think we need more Steven Wilson Jr. on our show.
00:41What do you think?
00:42I think so.
00:42I would love to come back, say when.
00:44I love it.
00:45Well, let's talk about Year to Be Young, right?
00:47Sure, yeah.
00:48I love this song.
00:49And it's talking about, correct me if I'm wrong,
00:52Year to Be Young, 1994.
00:55So, I mean, you're in the new artist category here at the CMAs.
00:58Yes, sir.
00:59But, I mean, listen, it's not polite to talk about somebody's age,
01:01but you're 46, right?
01:03Yeah.
01:03That's so cool and so awesome.
01:06But you're, I feel like your sound is influenced by more than just country.
01:10It's got soul.
01:11It's got rock.
01:12Tell us about the influences that have brought you your voice to where you are today at the CMAs.
01:17Well, I write country songs, but I tend to perhaps paint them with a little bit more of a Seattle brush.
01:25And I'm all hat and no Seattle.
01:29But, yeah, but I do, I like, you know, I'm very much influenced by rock music, indie rock music.
01:36I jokingly call our style of music Death Cab for Country.
01:41A lot.
01:41Because it is very much that.
01:44It's like I come from that indie rock school of that's what I played in, indie bands.
01:48But I was always writing country songs.
01:51So, yeah, and, yeah, I didn't really have a choice of when I was born.
01:59Like, my parents kind of made that choice for me.
02:02Like, I tend not to, like, fixate on how many times the earth has went around the sun since I was conceived.
02:08You shouldn't.
02:09So, yeah, I feel like we just kind of made up that number anyway.
02:13So, I don't really think about it.
02:16I don't want to make this about me, and this is very much visual, but I'll just show you my face.
02:19When I first am listening to Year to be Young, this was a couple months ago, and I heard it, and this is my face when your voice came in.
02:28I mean, I was, I love your vocals.
02:31Oh, thank you.
02:32It's fantastic, and so if you're watching on YouTube or whatever, look them up, Stephen Wilson Jr.
02:36The voice is going to blow you away.
02:37The songwriting at its core is fantastic, but we should expect that from a songwriter.
02:42So, Stephen Wilson Jr. here at the CMAs.
02:44Thank you, Jeff.
