00:00This is Jeff Kirkshen at the CMA Awards, and I'm with Chris Jansen.
00:07Yeah, welcome to town, dude.
00:08Thank you. It's good to be here, my friend.
00:10I gotta say, I always do one big question for our artists, and I have you on your way.
00:16Now, I had one planned, but then I was overhearing some conversations about taming and breaking horses as a kid.
00:24When you were growing up, and obviously the album, it's kind of a tie-in perfectly.
00:29It goes hand-in-hand with Wild Horses' album.
00:31Which is so perfect.
00:32You were taming horses at how old?
00:35I was eight years old, nine years old, about the same time I started playing music, actually.
00:39Also the same time I shot my first deer, eight years old.
00:42A lot of things happened at eight years old, but yeah, man, I was a horse trainer for...
00:46I played music my whole life, okay?
00:48Yeah.
00:48But it used to be just a hobby that I also loved so much, but I would make money at doing it.
00:53So I've never...
00:54Since I've been eight years old, I've been playing music.
00:57And so I've been playing music for 30 years.
00:59Wow.
01:00You know, and I've been making money at music for my life.
01:04And that's all I've ever known, and getting paid to do it, even when I was a little bitty old kid.
01:08So, but I just never considered it.
01:11You know, when you're a little kid, you want to be a football star or something.
01:14Right, right.
01:14You know, a baseball player.
01:15Yeah.
01:15And I wanted to be a horse trainer, and I became one, and I was a really good one.
01:20But then right about the time that I got enough, you know, balls to do, to move to Nashville, I just did.
01:27And I had a full ride scholarship to go to college with the equine stuff.
01:30Yeah.
01:31Just didn't want to do it.
01:33Wow.
01:33So I just kept...
01:34It's not like I just started music all of a sudden like so many people do nowadays.
01:38Right, right.
01:38I've been doing it my whole life.
01:39I've just done anything else.
01:41Ten...
01:41You play like ten instruments?
01:43Do I have that right?
01:43I think that's probably on a low scale.
01:45Yeah, but I'd say ten good.
01:46I was going to say, which is the one you just like can't quite crack?
01:49Steel guitar.
01:50I can play...
01:51But you're working.
01:52You're working on it.
01:52Yeah, I can play a six-string steel guitar.
01:53I can play a lap steel, but playing pedal steel guitar is pretty tough.
01:56A fiddle's hard, but I'm learning, but I should have it mastered this year.
02:01Well, I promised only one question, and I got two out of Chris Chanson.
02:03You can have as many questions as you want.
02:04You're the man.
02:05How's Raz?
02:05Raz is great.
02:06That's my question for you.
02:08Raz is absolutely spectacular.
02:09Did they ever open any hunting by that big park by you guys' station?
02:13I will say, I just moved to a new house up in the middle of nowhere, PA, and people
02:18drive to my neighborhood and walk a half mile into these woods.
02:21Good for them.
02:22So you can come on through my neighborhood anytime.
02:24A long time ago, a long time ago, on my first radio tour, I came to y'all's station, and
02:28there's a big park there nearby.
02:30Yeah, yeah.
02:31And they, yeah, right.
02:32Well, they opened up one season for, for like, like a deer culling, you know, I don't know
02:37that it went so great, but anyway, but I was like, so wanting to get in there and hunt,
02:41you know, so bad.
02:42But anyway, I say all that, say all this.
02:43Great to see you.
02:44Great to see you too.
02:46Chris Chanson, everybody here at the CMA Awards.
02:48Thanks.
