Daniel Wales reports from the Academy of Light ahead of Sunderland’s Premier League fixture away at Fulham, with Black Cats’ boss Régis Le Bris making clear that his side are starting to play with confidence away from home, but admitted that this confidence was fragile, and other teams will be learning how Sunderland approach their fixtures away from Wearside.

00:00Home form has been key for Sunderland so far this season in the Premier League.
00:08They are unbeaten at the Stadium of Light, having defeated sides such as West Ham United,
00:13Brentford and Wolves, as well as claiming draws against league leaders Arsenal,
00:20Aston Villa and Everton. However, their away results have also caught the eye.
00:26Despite losses against Burnley and Manchester United, Sunderland have managed important wins away from home
00:32against Nottingham Forest and even Chelsea. Forest have struggled so far this season,
00:38but Chelsea, as World Club champions, were a huge scalp for Regis Labriche's side.
00:43The support of their crowded home has certainly been a huge factor in aiding their performances at the Stadium of Light,
00:50but just what has been the catalyst for these victories away from Wearside?
00:55Well, what is certain is that Sunderland are showing a versatility that at present will easily be enough
01:01to keep them in the Premier League this season. Of course, though, they will need to maintain this
01:06with tricky fixtures still to come during a very busy winter period in the top flight.
01:13Le Brice revealed how preparations for fixtures this season have remained consistent,
01:19including for the games away at Nottingham Forest and Chelsea,
01:24that ultimately became impressive victories for the Black Cats on the road.
01:29I think for every fixture, the key pillar is to work together. And it's not easy after two weeks away or a bit
01:43without the same level of connection, to restart again, being well-connected.
01:50It's important to defend properly. Otherwise, especially against Fulham, they have so many threats.
01:56If you are just a bit open on one side, in the middle, I don't know where, they will punish you really quickly.
02:03So defending properly, with consistency, with good connections will be key once again.
02:09And after that, we have to keep improving the way we build up the play.
02:16Because I think if we are a bit more consistent, a bit more...
02:21How can I say this?
02:24We considered many turnovers against Everton, for example.
02:28We considered the first goal against Arsenal on a cheap turnover as well.
02:32If we are a bit more efficient on that part of the game, I think we'll be able to be more effective in the final third,
02:42because we have qualities. So different objectives.
02:46Do you go into this game against Fulham though, even though they're an established Premier League club,
02:49knowing you can get something because you've had those experiences at Forest and Chelsea?
02:53Yes, I think we are building our confidence progressively, but at the same time, everything is fragile.
03:00So it's always like a reset. It's like our first game in the Premier League.
03:04I think we have to have this mindset. Otherwise, if you think that only because you were successful before,
03:11it's enough to win the next point. It doesn't work like that.
03:16And do you think teams are all starting to change the way they approach to face you?
03:20And if anything, is that changing how you then have to approach them because of the results you've had this season?
03:26With the repetition of games, I think with the video analysis, the data analysis now, you can learn from a bigger sample size.
03:40So you understand the way the teams are able to create chances and how they can be vulnerable on different sides.
03:51So it works for every teams. So it's not only for us.
03:55Continuing to pick up results away from the Stadium of Light will depend on both how Sunderland play and how their opponents view them.
04:03At present, Sunderland's confidence is coming from the Black Cats being something of an unknown.
04:09And other clubs, perhaps, showing them more respect due to what Sunderland have already achieved so far this season.
04:16Although, Le Brice made clear that clubs will be able to analyse how Sunderland are going about their business.
04:21At present though, it is all playing into Sunderland's hands.
04:25But the real test will come if and when the Black Cats lose games away from home and then what their response will look like.
04:33That is for the future though. And for now, Sunderland will head to Craven Cottage to face Fulham knowing that they can go there and win.
