00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London. Today, we're looking at the Docklands Light Railway, better known as the DLR, and it was created to serve a very specific purpose, bringing new life to London's former Docklands.
00:15By the late 20th century, the area had fallen into decline and major regeneration plans were underway. To support that growth, a modern automated rail system was proposed light, efficient and able to navigate an area where building traditional underground lines would have been difficult.
00:33The DLR first opened in 1987 with just three branches and a modest fleet of driverless trains, making it one of the first systems of its kind in the UK.
00:43Its automation became a defining feature, with onboard train captains replacing conventional drivers and giving the network a distinctive identity.
