02:41Polly Willoughby was arguably the queen of daytime television
02:57So she was very much forefront on This Morning
03:00Which is a huge daytime TV show
03:03She'd been doing it for 14 years
03:05And I would say that her image was very much that of Girl Next Door
03:10Which of course gives her an accessibility to viewers
03:13And the nature of daytime television is that you get viewers that watch it all the time
03:18And they start to sort of feel that you're sort of part of their family
03:21One viewer is determined to take that familiarity to a new and terrifying level
03:31Gavin Plum was a severely obese man in his 30s from Harlow in Essex
03:40He was previously featured on various documentaries about weight loss for the BBC
03:44I only really go out my front door to put a bin bag in the bin just outside the flat
03:51And that's every few days
03:53When I'm in pain, the pain gets so bad that I physically...
03:58It's crippling
03:59It is physically crippling
04:01Because he's spending so much time at home
04:05He's exposed to a lot of daytime television
04:07Holly Willoughby is essentially...
04:10She has been the face of daytime TV for many, many years
04:13And most days she's on his screen
04:15And he develops this obsession with her
04:18He gets really, really into wanting to meet her
04:24And then subject her to horrific forms of violence
04:28More than 4,000 miles away
04:37A police officer specialising in online investigations
04:41Dials into an internet chat room
04:44And spots something suspicious
04:46We don't know his real name
04:49He used the pseudonym David Nelson
04:52He is an officer based in Minnesota in the USA
04:54As part of a unit which specialises in covert operations online
04:59Looking into potential groups that are organising acts of violence
05:04Acts of terrorism, human trafficking, sexual violence
05:07All of that sort of thing
05:08The real dark underbelly of the internet
05:11The undercover officer was online
05:13And had seen some pictures posted of Holly Willoughby
05:16And there was quite an alarming caption saying
05:18The one that I want
05:20He really thought he was going to get her
05:25And I believe that's what caught the officer's eye
05:27And then, of course, he's investigated it a little bit further
05:29And pursued what he had in front of him
05:31The internet chat room is titled Abduct Lovers
05:41Posting pictures of Holly
05:43The user calling himself BigBear341987
05:48Real name
05:49Gavin Plum
05:51Now being secretly pursued
05:54By undercover officer David Nelson
05:56And at this point, David Nelson
06:00He's not aware of who Holly Willoughby is
06:02He's based in America
06:03He doesn't really have much exposure to the UK television scene
06:06So he's seeing all these photos
06:08And then he's seeing Plum's messages about her
06:11About what he wants to do to her
06:13That officer acted very quickly
06:17I mean, he's from the States
06:19I don't even know if he knew who Holly was
06:21But he absolutely knew
06:23That what he was seeing online was very serious
06:26I think for Nelson
06:29He's probably seen a relatively young
06:31Very attractive blonde lady
06:34You know, she's beautiful, isn't she?
06:36Don't forget this cop will also be naturally inquisitive
06:39He's a police officer
06:40We're all keen to learn more
06:42And want to know what people are doing
06:43So I think he's probably seen the pictures
06:45Seen the caption
06:46And felt the threat was imminent
06:48And that he was going to act on it
06:50Encouraged by David Nelson's interest
07:00Gavin Plum reveals more
07:02Plum even shares a video of his equipment
07:07Spread out
07:08So the chloroform, the cable ties, the handcuffs
07:10All that sort of thing
07:11Hands and wrinkle shackles
07:14Ring and ball gag
07:16Three lots of rope
07:18Metal cable ties
07:20Two sets of handcuffs
07:22He'd bought 400 cable ties
07:25He'd gone into detail about the address of where she lived
07:28He was talking about moving Holly once she was unconscious
07:31I think that's probably the point
07:33You thought, hang on, this guy's a bit serious
07:35Growing more convinced the plot is real
07:43Undercover officer Nelson raises the stakes
07:47To gain the trust of Gavin Plum
07:51Nelson claims that he's really interested to come over to the UK
07:55From the USA to help him out
07:58And he even goes as far as presenting Plum with a picture
08:01Of a ticket, a flight ticket to the UK
08:03It's not a real one
08:05But it's enough to convince Plum that he's serious about coming over here
08:09To which Plum gets very excited
08:11And the message Plum sends back once he's had all this is
08:14Shit, it's actually happening
08:16And it goes from there
08:18Obviously he's engaged with him a little bit
08:21Which you would do
08:21You'd tickle it and see what's happening
08:23He pushed it a little bit further
08:25He learns Big Bear's real name is Gavin Plum
08:30And here's his plan
08:32To render Holly and her husband unconscious
08:35Then kidnap the TV star from her home in West London
08:39He's talking about logistics
08:41That it's a night
08:43Where they're going to take her to
08:44How they're going to subdue her
08:45And it's all
08:47What he's talking about is horrific
08:48Unknown to Gavin Plum
08:53He's being recorded
08:55Right, plan of action
08:59I'll give you a brief rundown
09:01Don't worry mate
09:03We've got that sorted
09:04It's all going to be done
09:05What we're going to do is this, this and this
09:07Basically we're going to hit it at night
09:12Less traffic on the road, etc
09:15Chloroforms, both of them
09:18That way then they can both be easily restrained
09:23From a professional standpoint, of course
09:27You have to take these threats seriously
09:28He's saying he's going to do it
09:30So why would we not believe it?
09:32We're then going to force her to make a video
09:35Just saying that she's with us under her own free will
09:38And she's pretty consenting
09:41Into everything we do to her
09:43So that covers us
09:45This absolutely had to be taken seriously
09:51Because he was having conversations online
09:53In a forum called Abduck Lovers
09:55And he was having a conversation
09:57With an undercover police officer
09:59Basically saying
10:01This is what I want to do
10:02We're going to go there in the night
10:04We need two lots of chloroform
10:05He knew that she didn't have CCTV on her house
10:10I mean, he had a level of detail
10:12That was quite astounding
10:15I still think my place might be better
10:18Because there's cameras everywhere
10:19It's just a temporary thing
10:20Hold her here
10:21You've got bed
10:22You've got warmth, etc
10:23Need you there, mate
10:25The chloroform bit's going to be fun
10:27Picking the outfits is going to be fun
10:28So if you can get to the UK
10:31To England
10:32That'd be awesome
10:34Because then you can be part of it
10:36David Nelson
10:38An undercover police officer
10:39From the other side of the world
10:41He's probably sat back for a minute
10:43And thought
10:43I've just come across something here
10:45That I was not expecting today
10:46Plum was certain that he wanted to do this
10:49Nelson felt that the threat was imminent
10:52And that he was going to act on it
10:54There is a lot of evidence in this case
10:56That they need to get quickly
10:57To help him kidnap ITV This Morning presenter
11:01Holly Willoughby
11:14Gavin Plum is confident he's found an accomplice
11:24To help him kidnap ITV This Morning presenter
11:27Holly Willoughby
11:28But Plum doesn't know
11:33That he's been tricked by an undercover officer
11:35In the USA
11:36Using the false name of David Nelson
11:39Nelson felt the threats coming from Plum were imminent
11:45You know Plum had said how excited he was
11:47You could tell how excited he was
11:48Right
11:49Plan of action
11:51I'll give you a brief rundown
11:53Basically we're going to hit it at night
11:57Less traffic on the road etc
12:00Thank goodness that A
12:02Gavin Plum ended up speaking to an undercover officer
12:05In America
12:06And B that that officer acted very quickly
12:10And he reported it to the FBI
12:12The US authorities under the instructions of David Nelson
12:23Will have informed Scotland Yard
12:25Your advice is to safeguard her
12:27And then go and investigate him immediately
12:30Because Plum is based in Essex
12:39Scotland Yard passed this intelligence to Essex police
12:42Who then trace Plum's address
12:44And they go to his address to arrest him
12:46The arrest team is instructed to take no chances
12:56Essex police don't know how dangerous he is
12:59He could have weapons
13:00So they have literally gone in
13:02All weapons blazing
13:03To make sure that he is secured
13:04As soon as they clamp eyes on him
13:06They actually arrested him at night
13:09Which is very rare
13:11You would normally wait
13:12You know a quick six o'clock in the morning
13:13Knock on the door
13:14Where you know he's going to be at home
13:15But they didn't want to waste a second with him
13:18Which tells you quite a lot
13:19They wanted to get into the address
13:20They wanted to secure all of the devices
13:22And get him in custody
13:24Before there was either things deleted
13:26Or he went out to try and commit this offence
13:28There was a lot of officers there
13:30Again I think that's probably to do
13:31With the search of the property
13:32Rather than the physical arrest of Plum
13:35Here they go
13:37Police!
13:42Stay where you are
13:43Do not touch anything
13:44What's going on?
13:45What the hell is going on?
13:49This is what my colleague has got to say
13:50Right, you're under arrest
13:51On suspicion of conspiracy
13:53You do not have to say anything
13:55She's got the cuff straight on him
13:56The arresting officer
13:57She's literally walked in and cuffed him
13:58Before she's even said anything
14:00To him
14:01The room is a complete tip
14:03There's just stuff
14:05Absolutely everywhere
14:06And he's obviously not got much clothing on
14:08Unfortunately
14:10What are you doing?
14:10What are you doing?
14:11They should talk about
14:12No, I'm not going to touch
14:14I'm not going to touch
14:15I'm not going to touch
14:16No, I'm not going to touch
14:17No, I'm not going to touch
14:18No, I'm not going to touch
14:19You're getting good, mate
14:20All right
14:21Yeah, you're all very jacked
14:22No, there's expertise for the arrest
14:24To allow for a conscious investigation
14:26By into you
14:27And to give them any sort of
14:29Private physical harm to the police
14:30To whom?
14:31OK, we'll talk about it
14:33To whom?
14:34Can you please explain
14:35What the hell is going on?
14:37It's like when he's asking
14:38What is going on?
14:39Like, he already knows
14:40What's happening
14:41But he's
14:42Trying to make out he doesn't
14:43Like, he's doing this false
14:44It seems really false
14:45And overacting
14:46To whom?
14:47To whom?
14:48To whom?
14:49Can you please explain
14:51What the hell is going on?
14:53But it's like he does know already
14:55And then
14:56When she's explaining it to him
14:59He's just like pretending
15:00He's all like shocked
15:01And trying to do these facial expressions
15:02But it's not really convincing
15:04So at the moment
15:06You're under arrest
15:07You're under arrest
15:08Who?
15:09Holly Willoughby
15:10I don't think those ones are warm
15:11He realises that the police may well
15:15Have a lot of information on him
15:17That he thought was completely anonymous
15:19And private
15:20And at that point the penny is dropping
15:22That is in very, very hot water
15:25He was trying to work out in his own head
15:27What his story was going to be
15:29The officer was very good with him
15:31She was explaining that
15:32You're going to be arrested
15:33You're going to be interviewed
15:34Over the threats of kidnap for Holly Willoughby
15:38That's the allegation
15:40No, no, no, no
15:42Already it looks like he's thinking
15:44Where have they got that information from?
15:46Who's told him?
15:47What one of my accomplices
15:48That I've been speaking to
15:49Has told him this?
15:51It's like he feels like someone
15:52Sort of like grassed him up
15:53Or dobbed him in
15:54Rather than
15:55Actually you've done it all yourself
15:57And unraveled this yourself
15:59It's like he's a bit confused by it
16:01Like I said
16:02You'll be trying to be in custody
16:03And you'll be interviewed about it
16:05I'm not going to tell you any further than that
16:07At this current time, okay?
16:08Okay then
16:09That is the allegation
16:11I'm not going to lie
16:13She's a fantasy of mine
16:14I mean, she's a fantasy of mine
16:15She's a fantasy of mine, isn't she?
16:16Yeah, I'm not going to lie
16:18She's a fantasy of mine
16:20She's a fantasy of a lot of guys, isn't she?
16:22Erm
16:23Er, yeah
16:25I mean
16:26It's just
16:29Yeah
16:30I think he just genuinely has no idea
16:34Of what he's done
16:36And what's about to hit him
16:37Which is the full might of the law
16:40Thank goodness
16:41Thank goodness
16:42I'm not going to lie
16:43She's a fantasy of mine
16:44I mean, she's a fantasy of a lot of guys, isn't she?
16:47For someone who then goes on to plead not guilty
16:49You would think that perhaps
16:51That's not the right thing to say
16:53When you're accused of wanting to try and kidnap her
16:56That'd be the last thing on your mind
16:58If you're getting arrested for kidnap
16:59This is serious
17:00But all he still wants to talk about
17:02Is that he fancies her
17:03And he's obviously crazy
17:05Like, he's absolutely deluded
17:06He's almost pretty much banged her right straight away
17:09It's damning
17:11It's damning
17:12It's damning
17:13Gavin Plum then appears to cooperate
17:18But knows the arrest team is close to finding even more compelling evidence
17:23Mate, if you haven't looked, I won't open this boat yet
17:27I was actually just about to go to bed
17:29The reason they're going to try that
17:30Is because of the offence that you've been arrested for
17:33We need to make sure that we can gather as much evidence as we can
17:35As quickly as we can
17:36They need to secure all the evidence
17:38Before anything is potentially tampered with or moved
17:41And they were right to do that
17:43Because they broke in
17:44And he had no time to put his phone away
17:46You're right to put the door in to secure the evidence
17:48All right
17:49You've got...
17:50There's no reason
17:51His phone was right there with these chat logs open
17:54So that's very crucial evidence which they captured straight away
18:01Now police build a much bigger case
18:04That Gavin Plum planned not just to kidnap
18:07But also rape and murder
18:12So we're in the cells now
18:14And Plum is a very different man to how he was
18:16When police were breaking down his door
18:18I think deep down he probably at this point knows what he's done is illegal
18:28But he's not willing to admit that
18:31And he still hasn't to this day
18:33After the arrest
18:43The key question for the trial
18:45Was Gavin Plum a serious threat?
18:49Gavin Plum is over 30 stone
18:52He's very much obese
18:53Not physically capable in the slightest
18:55And then he is talking about
18:58Vaulting a wall around someone's house
19:00Breaking into their house
19:02Subduing Holly and her husband
19:04Then taking Holly away
19:06Bundling her into a car
19:08All of this without any alarm being raised
19:10So the defence went very hard on the notion that this was a fantasy
19:15The prosecution claimed that despite his size
19:25Gavin Plum did intend to kidnap Holly Willoughby
19:30Hearing all these facts of cable ties, chloroform, day-to-day living, cameras
19:35He's got somebody flying from America to help him
19:37His excuse of his weight isn't going to cut it
19:40He had intent
19:41He was going to carry this out
19:43And he had got someone with more physical ability to help him
19:46And yes, the defence are saying
19:48He, you know, he can't physically do it
19:50No, he couldn't
19:51But he had asked someone else to do it with him
19:55You might look at Gavin Plum and think
19:57This man could never, you know, he's not even going to leave his house
20:00How could he do any harm on anybody?
20:03Anybody who thinks that has never been the victim of a stalker
20:07For a start
20:08You know, their actions get inside your head
20:11And when they know where you live
20:13And when they have a level of detail about your life
20:16That they really shouldn't have
20:18Because they've gone looking for it
20:19And they obviously have means of getting it
20:22Trust me
20:24It's very serious
20:26And it should be treated as such
20:30A 37-year-old man has been jailed for life
20:35Serving a minimum of 16 years
20:37For plotting to kidnap, rape and murder
20:40Television presenter Holly Willoughby
20:43Gavin Plum, from Harlow in Essex
20:46Assembled a toolkit for highly sexualised violence
20:50But he was arrested after he unwittingly disclosed his plans online
20:55To an undercover police officer in the US
20:58Speaking from experience
21:01Officer Nelson did an incredible job
21:04I think he's used his investigative ability
21:07And his, you know, his mindset was fantastic
21:10Because he just knew it was something to work with
21:13And I think he did exactly the right thing
21:15It was revealed that everywhere he went
21:20Gavin Plum was a danger
21:22Twice, carrying imitation guns
21:25He tried to kidnap women on local trains
21:28At the nearby shopping precinct
21:30He imprisoned two 16-year-old girls
21:33After his arrest, police found 10,000 photographs of Holly Willoughby in his flat
21:40What struck me about Gavin Plum when I first saw the arrest footage
21:49Was just how sort of mundane and ordinary he seemed
21:55And to think that somebody like that had such a terrible impact
22:01On the life of somebody much loved by the nation
22:05Was almost hard to believe at first
22:10After 14 years, Holly Willoughby left this morning
22:14Immediately after the arrest of Gavin Plum
22:16Her statement said
22:18I now feel I have to make this decision for me and my family
22:23Today an ITV spokesperson has released a statement
22:27Saying this news has come as a huge shock to everyone at this morning at ITV
22:32We are providing all of the support we can to Holly and her family
22:36At this incredibly distressing time
22:39Everyone I know messaged Holly just to say
22:44We are so sorry that you're going through this
22:46And you know, hope you're okay
22:49I mean, it's terrifying
22:52And she's got young children
22:54And all she does is appear on television
22:57Do her job, go home, does the school run
23:00And to be subjected to this sort of psychological terror
23:05Actually, that's what it is
23:07No one deserves that
23:10And you know, it absolutely should be treated very seriously
23:13By both the police and the judiciary
23:15And then I'm very glad that in this case it was
23:37I just found a body
23:38Right, okay
23:39A body
23:40Is it... are they breathing?
23:42No, they're dead
23:43They look like they've possibly been there like a few days or something
23:47Right
23:48Right, okay, bear me a second
23:50Let's pop this on
23:53Police were called to a report of a body found near the Bennet Road area of Zolkham on the 27th of June
24:00And our initial inquiries have identified that female as Mi Chong, a 67 year old from the Wembley area of London
24:07Who was reported missing in London on the 11th of June
24:11For 16 days, Mi Chong, known as Deborah Chong, has been missing
24:27Nine days later, police go to arrest a suspect
24:30In this case, their suspicion fell on Gemma Mitchell
24:38It was a dramatic police rage
24:40They turned up at her house
24:42They rammed the door down
24:52Police!
24:53Police!
24:54Hello there
24:56Hello
24:57Hello
24:58Yeah, good
24:59There's no answer
25:00Sorry, what's your name?
25:01I'm sorry, I'm going to sleep
25:02Are you Gemma?
25:03No, no
25:04Okay
25:05Okay, Gemma
25:06Just give you one a second
25:08Come on, hold a second
25:09Sorry
25:10Gemma, do you want to come up?
25:11Yeah, sure, sure
25:12Come on, alright
25:13Just fancy them
25:14Just fancy your hands
25:15Alright Gemma, at this moment I'm resting on a suspicion of murder
25:17Okay?
25:18You don't have to say anything, but you may hold your fence
25:19If you want to mention one question
25:20Something which you later rely on in court
25:22Anything you do say
25:23Maybe give them the evidence, okay?
25:24Once you're in the cuffs
25:28I'll go explain everything to you
25:29Okay
25:30Should I get some shoes now?
25:31No, sorry
25:32What?
25:33If you want one sec
25:34Who's inside at the moment?
25:35I'm mother
25:36Your mother?
25:37Yeah
25:38Okay
25:40As an investigator, a murder investigator for me
25:43This was one of the most important stages of an investigation
25:49Is that arrest?
25:50Alright Gemma, at this moment
25:51I'm resting on a suspicion of murder
25:53There's no replicating
25:54Standing in front of them
25:55Delivering those words
25:57And looking at them in the eye
25:59How do they respond?
26:01What am I seeing?
26:02At this moment
26:03I'm resting on a suspicion of murder
26:04There's no replicating
26:05Standing in front of them
26:06Delivering those words
26:07And looking at them in the eye
26:08How do they respond?
26:09If you want one sec
26:11There's no questions being put to the officer
26:13There's no shock
26:15There's no reaction that I would expect to see in someone who's completely innocent
26:19Being arrested for the most serious crime you can be arrested for and just accepting it
26:25I wouldn't, would you?
26:28Gemma Mitchell was born in Australia
26:31She was highly educated
26:33She then came over to the UK with her mother when her parents separated
26:38She started to study at King's College London in Human Sciences
26:42And significantly there was a module within that course where she learnt to dissect a human body
26:50She also was a trained osteopath and she was a devout Christian
26:56Gemma Mitchell and Deborah Chong met through a church group
27:01Both of them committed devout Christians
27:05Very quickly over a few months they became very close friends and there is evidence of that
27:11There were hundreds of messages sent between the two of them
27:20Deborah Chong has been missing all day
27:35Deborah's lodger then arrives at home in the evening
27:38And he notices that Deborah's not there
27:42He notices also that her glasses and her mobile phone are still in the house
27:48And he rings police and reports her as missing
27:59The next day the lodger decided to message Deborah's good friend Gemma Mitchell
28:04Just to see whether she had an idea of where Deborah could be
28:07And Mitchell responded with a text message saying that Deborah decided to go away
28:13She'd gone to visit friends and she was going there for a year
28:17And it was somewhere near the ocean
28:21And that message clearly from Gemma was to try to reassure this lodger
28:26For two weeks no one sees or hears anything from Deborah Chong
28:32But when her body is discovered in the seaside resort of Sulcombe Devon
28:38A murder inquiry begins 200 miles away in London
28:45It will be the Metropolitan Police responsibility for investigating the crime
28:49Because given all the circumstances that is where the murder is likely to have taken place
28:54A murder investigation team of roughly about 20 detectives
28:59One of the most important roles in this investigation would be that of the CCTV officer
29:04Which would be a detective constable and it would be their responsibility to collect CCTV
29:10And then viewing it, understanding what the footage shows
29:14The CCTV in this case was hugely important
29:18Especially around the movements of Gemma Mitchell
29:23On June the 11th 2021
29:34Gemma decides to leave her house quite early on in the morning
29:38At around half past six
29:40Gemma Mitchell was seen pulling a suitcase behind her
29:45A large suitcase that quite clearly was empty
29:49Because it was easy for her to lift and manoeuvre
29:53And she's sort of just strolling along the street
29:56She is about to get on a train
29:59Next, police discover CCTV
30:06Showing Gemma Mitchell wearing a face mask and a beanie
30:13She is taking that suitcase to Deborah Chong's house
30:18She's then spotted leaving the house
30:26Dragging along, not one, but two suitcases
30:31When she had taken it from her house
30:35She didn't have any problems dragging it along
30:38After she left Deborah's house
30:40It's very clear she's having difficulty trying to drag it along
30:44It looks very heavy
30:45And she's having difficulty manoeuvring it
30:48One of them had the body of Deborah Chong
30:52Gemma had just murdered her
30:54It was clearly something in there that was very heavy
30:59And she's having to stop
31:01And then she phoned someone
31:04She was struggling to move it
31:06She had to kick the wheels to get it to move
31:10She then tries to get a taxi at one point
31:13The other suitcase she's got in that suitcase
31:16Were lots and lots of documents
31:18Personal documents belonging to Deborah
31:21In this bit of footage
31:26She's left one of the suitcases on the edge of the verge
31:30And she's dragging up the other suitcase
31:33And then she spends a good couple of hours dragging the suitcase
31:37Which had Deborah's body in it
31:39A taxi arrives
31:49The driver needs help loading the heavy case into the boot
31:52It will be 16 days before it's seen again
31:55Salcombe is a long way from anywhere
32:14It finds itself in the bottom right hand corner of South Devon
32:18It's a very beautiful place with lots of sandy beaches
32:23And a reputation for some really expensive houses
32:26Remember this was not long after Covid as well
32:29This is June 2021
32:31Where people would have been enjoying their staycations
32:34Perhaps unable to go abroad
32:36And just really wanting to have a bit of relaxation time by the coast
32:40And what better place to go than beautiful Salcombe
32:45It is about as far as you can imagine
32:48From the type of place where you would expect to find a body
32:52Is it an emergency?
32:55Um, hi, I just found a body
32:58Oh, go ahead, caller, what's your emergency?
33:00Um, I just found a body
33:02Right, okay, a body, is it, are they breathing?
33:06No, they're dead, they look like they've possibly been there like a few days or something
33:11Right, right, okay, bear on me a second, let's pop this on
33:14This body looks like it's been there some time because of the amount of decomposition she can see
33:22Gemma Mitchell had kept the body at her house in London for two weeks
33:27And most of the decomposition would have occurred there
33:30To cover up her murder of Deborah Chong
33:43Gemma Mitchell devised an extraordinary plan
33:48She hired a car in a false name
33:51She left her phone at home
33:53So that she was leaving no trail in her mind
33:55Of going to Sorkham in Devon, which is about 200 miles from London, so a huge distance
34:03And she hired quite a large car, a Volvo SUV
34:10Detectives discover more CCTV
34:13This time recording Gemma Mitchell near home
34:17Loading a suitcase into the hire car
34:19She's trying to lift it up, having a lot of difficulty
34:25It's clearly very heavy
34:27With Deborah's body in, into the back of the car
34:30She keys into the sat-nav, Sulcam, North Sands, Cliff Road
34:37But close to her destination, a problem, a flat tyre
34:44She was helped by an AA technician at a garage a few miles outside Salkham
34:54And he noted how there was a smell in the car
34:58And how when he came to put the spare wheel back in its normal place
35:02Gemma Mitchell was deeply uncomfortable with that
35:05And asked him instead to put it on the back seat
35:08Something he said he remembered thinking was very strange at the time
35:11But we can only assume that the reason Gemma Mitchell did not want that wheel to go back in its rightful place
35:19Was that the body, or at least some parts of it, were in the boot of her car
35:27Next, police find CCTV of Gemma Mitchell's hire car heading towards the seafront
35:33And she drives around a bit there, and then she makes the decision to dump Deborah's body in woodland
35:49About 40 minutes after she arrives, her car that she's using is seen again, leaving the area
35:55And then she makes her way back to London
35:58I just found a body
36:02But there is an even more gruesome fact about the discovery
36:08The head is missing
36:11No, they're dead, they look like they've possibly been there like a few days or something
36:16It took some time and a police search to find Deborah's head some ten feet away from Deborah's body
36:33Gemma Mitchell was a trained osteopath
36:36And she got a first class honours degree at King's College
36:41And as part of her training, she learnt how to dissect human bodies
36:49This was an idyllic seaside place that general crime doesn't happen
36:55Let alone murders, let alone murders involved bodies with decapitated heads
37:06When she murdered and dismembered Deborah, Gemma Mitchell suffered an injury herself
37:16This would give the police video team more evidence
37:20Later in the evening, this is inside St Thomas' Hospital
37:25And you can see she's got something wrapped around one of her fingers
37:29Almost certainly in the process of attacking, killing and subduing Deborah, she'd broken her finger
37:38It would have been a spanner in the works, if you like
37:40So she would have had to have thought about
37:42Well, under what circumstances could I have broken my finger?
37:45And she told the hospital that it's because she had shut her finger in a car door
37:54All right Gemma, at this moment I'm resting on suspicion of murder
37:57During the arrest, the bandaging is still visible on Gemma Mitchell's left hand
38:03I'll go explain everything to you, okay?
38:06Shall I get some cheese?
38:08If you want to one sec
38:10Who's inside at the moment?
38:11My mother
38:12Your mother?
38:15It's just one moment in an arrest that points to Gemma Mitchell's guilt
38:20What we see is the officers are turning up with what is referred to in the Metropolitan Police as an enforcer
38:29Essentially it's like a battering ram
38:33I think the decision to use enforcer was because they wanted to get hold of the evidence before Gemma Mitchell could destroy it
38:43Gemma, do you want to come off?
38:45Yeah, sure, sure
38:47All right, just fancy them
38:49Hands, just so your hands
38:51All right Gemma
38:52As soon as Gemma Mitchell comes to the door, she's compliant
38:54She's not in a panic, she's not violent, she's not obstructing them in any way
38:57So that allows them to then engage with her in terms of why they are there
39:01All right Gemma, at this moment I'm resting on suspicion of murder
39:04Okay, you don't have to say anything
39:05She physically kind of moves back, she's almost surprised
39:10Clearly it's all an act, but she is very calm
39:13And a real contrast to how the police tried to knock down the front door in her house
39:21Inside, police discover the documents taken away in the second suitcase
39:26Financial records of Deborah Chong's £700,000 estate, recently updated
39:32They find a will that was forged by Gemma
39:37And the will said that 95% of Deborah's estate would be left to Gemma
39:43And 5% would be left to Gemma's mother
39:46That will was forged after Gemma murdered Deborah
39:51So that was a really significant piece of information that they found at the property
39:54Significant, police found, because Gemma Mitchell was banking on money that Deborah had offered her
40:03The roof of Gemma Mitchell's house needed fixing, but she claimed she was out of money
40:09Deborah offered Gemma around £200,000 to help her renovate and finish the work on Gemma's house
40:17At one point Deborah went to have a look at Gemma's house and it was a complete tip, it was like a building site
40:25And it was that visit that seemed to change her mind
40:30Deborah said to Gemma, I'm not going to give you the money
40:33There was a message exchanged between the two of them
40:36And Deborah was clearly telling Gemma to sell the house
40:40And that clearly triggered something in Gemma
40:43Gemma Mitchell was determined to get the money promised to her by Deborah
40:49Gemma Mitchell decided to hatch a plan where she would take that money anyway
40:55But that would involve murdering Deborah
41:00Deborah Chong, detectives learned, had been a vulnerable target
41:06She had a number of mental health issues, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia
41:12She also was referred to a local community mental health centre
41:18And that was because she was sending messages to the then Prince Charles
41:23She thought that she could communicate with him through YouTube
41:27She was also sending messages as well to Boris Johnson
41:30So she was a vulnerable woman who was trusting of other people
41:34In custody, Gemma Mitchell is questioned about driving Deborah's dead body to Sulcombe
41:43And her strange behaviour when her car had to be fixed
41:46And Nev said that the person driving the Volvo waited in the car all that time
41:57With the windows down and the front door opened, the passenger door opened
42:03When it was literally chucking it down with rain and it was windy
42:08Why is that Gemma?
42:11No comment
42:13The car stank didn't it Gemma?
42:15No comment
42:17Stunk of a dead person
42:19No comment
42:21Stunk of Deborah's decomposing body
42:28Is that right Gemma?
42:30No comment
42:31At the Old Bailey today, a woman has been found guilty of murder
42:41And jailed for life serving a minimum of 34 years
42:45Gemma Mitchell aged 38, an osteopath from North West London
42:50Murdered a fellow churchgoer and concealed her body 200 miles away
42:54I covered the trial and it was gruesome, grisly details that were really horrific
43:04All right Gemma, at this moment I'm resting on a suspicion of murder
43:07OK, you don't have to say anything
43:09This case was about the ultimate betrayal of friendship
43:13And it's not every day you see a case like that at the Old Bailey
43:17You know, one so horrific where you're listening to evidence about a woman being murdered
43:22And then decapitated by her friend, stuffed in a suitcase
43:26And then her body dumped in woodland
