Fire disrupts climate talks at COP30 in Brazil as negotiators reach critical final days

The fire in the Blue Zone of the UN climate conference forced evacuations and stalled negotiations as the summit nears its end with many agreements yet to be made.

00:00The fire broke out at the United Nations Climate Summit in Belém in Brazil,
00:06prompting evacuations and disrupting climate talks.
00:10The summit organizers said everyone was evacuated safely,
00:14but reported that the Blue Zone had been shut down temporarily
00:17to complete the necessary safety checks.
00:21The disruption came at a critical moment,
00:24as negotiators were struggling to reach a consensus on certain key topics.
00:29Just before the fire broke out,
00:31UN Secretary-General António Guterres had urged countries
00:35to show willingness and flexibility to deliver concrete results.
00:39I think this is not the moment to talk about the possible failure of the COP.
00:45It is the moment to guarantee that that failure doesn't occur.
00:49And so I am perfectly convinced that a compromise is possible,
00:55that to take into account, as I mentioned,
00:58the legitimate concerns of adaptation and the legitimate concerns of mitigation.
01:04The local fire service said the cause of the fire was believed to be an electrical device,
01:08likely a microwave.
01:10Thirteen people were treated on site for smoke inhalation.
