Negotiations at the COP30 climate summit resumed on Nov 21 following a fire at the venue in Belem, Brazil the day before but the talks were expected to extend beyond the deadline at the end of the week-long event.

A draft text for a deal, released by Brazil before dawn, contained no reference to fossil fuels, was rejected by the European Union.

00:22We are here together after yesterday's fire at the venue.
00:43It was very quickly contained and reminded us of our shared vulnerability and how instinctively
00:57we come together to take action in moments of crisis.
01:03And at the same time that we had to face the fact that the largest economy in the world
01:10left the Paris Accord, we have to remember that we all stayed in because we all believe
01:17in it.
01:18We cannot be divided inside the Paris Accord.
01:23This regime has to be strengthened.
01:27This regime has to continue.
01:30And this regime has already achieved much more than all those who criticize it try to convince
01:39the world.
01:40No, that's definitely not my intention.
01:52But remember that the who decides that is not me, it's the countries.
01:58So it's a party driven process.
02:01And this presidency wants the countries to bring the solution.
02:06I am not going to decide for the country.
02:08What about the deal?
02:09Do you expect to be able to get anything tonight?
02:11The conversation is ongoing.
02:13I'm going to talk to you later.
02:14The oil producing countries are only trying to focus on adaptation.
02:28But adaptation is an empty bag if mitigation doesn't come next to adaptation.
02:35The root cause of this problem is fossil fuels.
02:39How are we dealing with that?
02:40How are we going to come out from this COP to say and to tell the people that we deny
02:45the most basic scientific truth, which is that the fossil fuels are the cause of more
02:51than 80% of the emissions that are generating climate change.
02:56We cannot look at the people and the future generations if we don't do something now.
03:01And we cannot accept a text that is not dealing with the real problems.
03:06We are building on what we have agreed two years ago.
03:12That this work has to have a strategy for lowering emissions, getting down on fossil fuels.
03:18And we built on the agreement last year.
03:20So EU is not walking away from anything.
03:22That's the position.
03:23I think there's a saying.
03:24It ain't over until the fat lady sings the blues.
03:27To my knowledge that song hasn't been sung yet.
03:30So let's wait and see.
