00:00on all new salvage hunters with almost 60 years combined experience three leading
00:07antique and salvage dealers are joining forces from west wales country house connoisseur alistair
00:14driver loves the traditional sorry i know it's nice welsh handsome pine tavern settle don't try
00:20to sell it to me no i'm not trying to sell it you edinburgh-based dealer vicky knot has an
00:25incredible eye for interiors i just think ever easy i just think that's brilliant in london
00:32shirkan yumakja is a devotee of retro design and industrial salvage sourced from all over europe
00:39these were made by gents of leicester and it's a general post office one while his brother jay
00:45restores items back to life there's nothing to rust nothing to go wrong and that's why these last
00:51forever together they're traveling the country on the hunt for the very best antiques and decorative
00:57salvage
01:04this time still fierce a hundred year old lion in roaring condition
01:105 30s usually that you know you get some damage or it's really good stunning danish design lights
01:15up shirkan and vicky's day they've got white on the inside but it's not just painted it is an actual
01:21like a layer of white glass and experts advice on how to clean those dusty vintage pieces
01:28probably need a little bit of a dust i'll just use my bottom shall i
01:31based in north london dealer shirkan yumakja and brother jay have spent nearly 15 years building up
01:45a loyal customer base with a taste for industrial salvage and vintage lighting all dealers have their
01:52favorite items you know their bread and butter items with us it's lighting especially modern lighting
01:57from about the 1930s onwards and our client base is a young client base we have young male new money
02:06hard working and they have a specific style they like the modern lighting they're like mid-century
02:12industrial lighting so that's why we're always on the lookout for that kind of thing because
02:17you know you need to feed your customers that's how you make your money
02:20today's shirkan and jay are up at the crack of dawn to cross london keen to arrive early at a location
02:29where literally tens of thousands of vintage objects will be on offer including plenty of the
02:34in-demand items they need to find for their customers sunbury antiques fair is always good yeah always
02:42good always pick up some lovely bits today hopefully will be a busy day the weather's good as well
02:48as long as the weather's good you get a lot of people even like they'll come last minute
02:53so hopefully we pick up some nice pieces first opened in 1878 the kenton park race course in sunbury-on-thames
03:05surrey is known for the famed king george the sixth chase held every boxing day but in more recent
03:12times it's been the backdrop for an event that's become legendary in the antiques world
03:17from modest beginnings over 40 years ago sunbury antiques fair is these days the largest and longest
03:24running twice monthly market in the country with over 700 sellers shifting everything from artwork to
03:31furniture and the best pickings are for those who are first out of the gate
03:35morning you all right so we always come here we all especially like before a fair before a show
03:45we'll come down here we'll have a look around sometimes go back with nothing sometimes fill our
03:49boots but there are those bread and butter things that we always sell you know good lighting industrial
03:55clocks everything can be bought here that's quite nice isn't it it starts at 6 30 being here that early
04:03is important because that's when the good stuff they just fly out they're just gone
04:13the baker's good on it so there's a smith's baker light clock wartime or pre-war electric clock
04:22the baker light is just perfect it's kind of just lightened up a bit the face of the clock has
04:27deteriorated perfectly as well smiths were very famous for the first electric clocks they're one of
04:33england's most famous clocks train stations factories big industrial clocks this double-sided clock
04:41would probably have hung outside a shop or business in the 1930s smith's english clocks were producing
04:48over 4 000 timepieces a week and their designs were to be seen in domestic industrial and public spaces
04:55so this clock comes with recognition and nostalgia it's high on the bestseller list for shir khan and with
05:02a little restoration from jay could be worth around 460 pounds i'll put new mechans in there i like the
05:10face 150 160. people that buy them it kind of like takes them back they're a very famous clock which makes
05:21it very saleable how much you got in that mate there's a dugdills lamp there dugdills is a british
05:32company it's an english company they produced some amazing lamps starting early 1900s from brass bankers
05:40lamps with glass shades to you know hardcore industrial lamps they were used by aerospace you know they were
05:46meant for really hard work but they just were so aesthetically beautiful there's one on the table
05:52there with its original base it's it's perfect 120 140 would be the best
06:01still got the market as well yeah go on then yeah you didn't know this wouldn't it thank you sir
06:06you've got to know what your customers want and every time we do them up and we put them online
06:11they really don't hang around for long they sell just like that still got its original switch on
06:16it and it's 140 pounds we shake his head it's a perfect buy and and that is why we come here
06:21that is why we'll come here week after week
06:23what do you think they're for lads i'm guessing milk or wine no you don't have milk bottles that
06:39high yeah wine i could see but nickel oil ah for two-stroke engines okay in the 30s
06:45and you had a bottle of oil for every tank full of petrol okay so they put a bottle of oil in for
06:51every tank yeah because that's how two-stroke work because they've got no oil in the sumps
06:55really nice they're in good condition as well what you got in them 40 each i'm not gonna argue
07:02with that shape man's hand thank you very much thanks for that all right can we just put them
07:06on the back of the van yeah and then i'm gonna i need to go around paying everyone and i'll come
07:09my secretary will be around secretary no respect no respect whatsoever there's two crates there
07:17they're really nicely done they've got cast aluminium and it's got the name of the company
07:22nicholas they can go into retail they can go into someone's house and and they just they just look
07:26the part when it's something to do with automobiles when something to do with cars motorcycles
07:32anything like that you've got those people who become potential customers
07:36that tiger that lion that's quite nice it's all right a bit of fun do you like it i quite like
07:48it if you like let me go and have a look at it you're all right
07:55are the tail soft yeah it's got like a soft tail to it
07:58do you know how old this is uh 1930s 1930s yeah the fireside line it's a peppermache yeah i'm saying
08:10for 9 30s usually that you know you get some damage or it's really good yeah no he's yeah he's really
08:15lovely it is it's got a really nice look to it really nice lions tigers i love them i love the big
08:23cats and then you've got a really well made paper mache one and there's some age to that 1930s the
08:30lady tells me no damage absolutely beautiful this statue is an early 20th century version of the
08:38fireside lion in wealthy georgian and victorian homes bronze or stone lions were often placed on
08:44either side of the fireplace echoing the power and status of the british empire this papier mache lion
08:51has a more playful folk art feel which would work for a modern or eclectic interior most likely a
08:58one-off shere khan thinks it could fetch around 440 pounds your best on that 140 140 140 very best
09:21all right i'm taking it all 40.
09:51done i'm chuffed with that yeah it's really cool fantastic thank you very much that that's amazing
09:56oh i'm so happy with that things like that they're so collectible people love them you know there's a
10:02varied amount of people that that will go for that and again it's just one of those things that will
10:06just sell us one of our bread and butter items you know good paper mache done properly always sells
10:12that's nice it's a glass look what do you think it's okay it's a bit too far gone but just the
10:24cigarette part is gone but the abdullah is still there yeah that's nice and it's in this original
10:30thing oh nice it is nice abdullah cigarettes they used um turkish egyptian and i think american tobacco
10:39as well early 1900s so it was a london-based cigarette company it's a bit gone under power
10:45is the cigarettes but it's worn out gracefully um looks amazing you know we'll get it chained up
10:51hung up and it'll look beautiful you're very best on that uh 150 150 150 120 i mean it's quite rare
11:07yeah okay 120 yeah lovely thank you very much thank you it's an arabic name it's a very popular name in
11:14the middle east so someone might not even go with the cigarette advertising they might just go with
11:19the name so you've got a whole new audience space that you can sell to me and my brother back on
11:28familiar ground another good day we always have a good day at kempton whether we're buying or selling
11:34got some really nice lighting got some clocks got oil canister crates the abdullah cigarette sign
11:41is a little bit special but i think today the best thing i bought is that paper mache lion it's just
11:47so lovely it's just adorable i haven't bought something this good in a long time this is one of
11:53the first markets we started selling at about 13 14 years ago and the good thing is like a lot of
12:00friends we've met over the ways we end up meeting them here you have a little chat have a coffee catch up
12:06on old times you always have a good day here i'm absolutely knackered man seriously no it's been a
12:16good day yeah everything we bought i'm happy with being here for 6 30 that is the only thing but early
12:21bird catches the worm that's it while jay heads back to london with a van load of best sellers to prep for
12:29sale shere khan has more buying to do this time he's joining forces with edinburgh-based dealer vicky
12:36knot who over decades has honed her instincts for spotting the decorative but practical pieces she knows
12:43her customers are after i think it's getting a balance when you're dealing and having a shop you can't
12:51really fill it with sort of real kind of left field buys all the time you need to have a balance
12:58and i like to have really good practical interesting items for the home which keeps the balance i don't
13:05know if other dealers are like this but i can just look at something and i just go yeah that'll be in
13:11and out by the end of the day it's just an instinct it's 25 years of hard graft
13:20today shere khan wants to introduce vicky to a contract in north yorkshire
13:25he thinks might be a good source for pieces that will appeal to her customers
13:30vicky today we're going to see um someone that i've bought and sold with his name's tom he's got
13:35a company called eight man interiors i think i've seen him on instagram yeah yeah he's a young dealer
13:43he's in his early 20s really nice guy so do you think it's going to be a day that i'll be able to get
13:49a few bits yeah yeah he's got a lot i mean you know kind of uh visually decorative uh stuff and
13:56personally i think it could be more your day than my day today oh really yeah yeah yeah yeah and maybe
14:01you know i'll get some ideas from you as well you never know we're north yorkshire we're in the depth
14:06yeah yeah nunnington this is a wee bit different for you is it for me this is i come from the concrete
14:13jungle i come from london in 17 this is beautiful for me honestly you feel a wee bit like your own
14:19holiday yeah i feel like i'm in a different country
14:24the quiet village of nunnington takes its name from a christian nunnery
14:29built here over a thousand years ago likely at the site where the 17th century nunnington hall stands
14:34today more recently the village has become home to an extraordinary collection of vintage objects
14:40from the uk and beyond ape man interiors is the work of tom brennan
14:49i've always been a dealer from an early age selling antiques and decorative items out my bedroom at home
14:56i remember getting told off so much for going and buying useless junk but then i later found out that
15:02i could sell that useless junk for a profit i used to sell anything from cameras to militaria over time i
15:09moved to traditional english antiques then on to asian i love the quality of some of it the bright
15:16colors the different materials how rustic and worn items are i have bought off shir khan before but
15:23no i've never dealt with vicky but very excited too
15:26hi tom hello good to meet you i'm vicky you all right tom and good to see you again see you again
15:35how you been yeah really busy thanks yeah this is the first time i've been to his shop which looks
15:40absolutely amazing welcome yeah god this is incredible it's like an aladdin's cave really yeah
15:45yeah is it chinese indian so there's a real mixture in here we've got tibetan korean we've got
15:51industrial lighting we've got a bit of french antiques but mainly it is india and china the
15:58shop it's a mixture of everything you know you've got industrial lights there and you've got fabrics
16:03from africa and it's all been put together and created in such a way that it all goes together
16:10the way tom has done this his style is impeccable it really is god i love that little basket
16:16is that one of the fishermen's type we that is known as a flower basket right so it'll be used
16:23for people to sell flowers out at markets right hence the shape of it it's uh chinese yeah okay can
16:31i model it for you for a minute okay so it'll be like this oh yeah that suits you actually do you
16:37like a do you like flowers and you'll be sitting there and i've come come to the gentleman that you're
16:41with and i would say a flower for the lady really yeah and then i'd sell him a flower and he would
16:45give it to you in chinese of course a chinese all handmade all made of reeds incredibly skillful
16:52yeah it takes to produce and they last a lifetime i think that's quite a cool sort of decorative
16:58item isn't it um what about age wise you know how old this is this one i would say is about 1880s
17:05in that sort of region what sort of money's in something like that tom so what does it say on the
17:11tag so we've got 120 on the tag yeah for you it could be 100 right okay
17:20i love it but i don't say much oh god there's not much left in that for me really
17:26it's the type of thing you want to touch you want to pick up you want to look at it's got curves it's
17:31got little bits of wire on it it's just so gorgeous see i'd like to have it just tipping over the 100
17:38do you know what i mean in the shop that means you've got to be enough in it for you yeah
17:43i could do 80. yeah go on then i'll take it at 80. thank you very much we'll get the ball rolling
17:50in all honesty there's not that much in it for me once we pay for everything but it's just a really
17:57pretty item to have in stock have you seen these before they're indian flasks army aren't they yes
18:05yeah i used to sell them actually leftover british army oh are they yeah i like the way the enamels
18:12kind of going on some of them it looks really nice well they're surplus the leftover so they would have
18:17just been dumped and then they're brought back to life over here what i love about them is see when you
18:23have them literally lined up like that as an army with flowers they look amazing don't they what kind
18:30of money are those retail 15 a piece trade they can be eight and that is it there's no movement yeah
18:39but i've i've sold hundreds of them every single one i get they always go you've got nine is that the
18:46only nine you've got oh that's probably the last nine i've got i'm gonna take those yeah i think you
18:51should eight quid each i'll take those yeah thank you very much not something that i would i would
18:55usually go for it's not really me but there was both something very decorative and very kind of
19:01masculine about it um so you know what i've been traveling around with vicky and i think she's kind
19:08of rubbed off on me a bit i think they they kind of suit my style as well these enameled water
19:14canteens were made in calcutta by the bengal enamel works limited which opened in 1921 made for both
19:22british and indian army personnel they're highly decorative and could be worth around 20 pounds each
19:28we've not got very far in have we we haven't it's a bit of mercury glass here i just want to have a
19:37look at some i think there's another mercury glass piece at the bottom as well the green one oh the
19:43green one yeah do you want to give me that and you can get that one out or do you want to just hold
19:49on to that one so are these are these shades british yeah they're british the really famous and really
19:54expensive ones of these are the german ones by zeiss icon zeiss i mean you'd know that they did
20:01the camera lenses yeah yeah this green one is very nice i can feel a lot of soul from from an
20:07old piece of furniture from an old light that green on ceramics that green on any piece of old furniture
20:14everyone loves it that green sells and when it's aged like that even better what have you got on
20:19the green one green one could be 60 to you take that thank you very much and the silver one 40. thank
20:31you for those fantastic underneath the outer enamel layer on these glass shades is a silvery paint which
20:40creates a reflective surface visible through the glass from the inside although the silvery chemical mercury
20:46was not involved the glass was known as mercury glass because of the brightness created when light
20:52hit the mirror surface inside the shade commonly used for strong lighting needed for shops warehouses
20:58and even outdoors these lampshades have the vintage industrial feels sheer cans customers look for
21:04and with careful restoration could be worth around 210 pounds each honestly this place is just so
21:12beautiful thank you and you haven't even seen the half of it oh really oh god tell me about these
21:18wee lamps they are laboratory lights okay they actually came out of a university in guildford right
21:24okay there's something just quite nice about them so i've got a set of four and one individual and
21:30they adjust up and down do they yep so they go up and down and then the shade itself can go up and
21:36down and twist that's why they make a good reading light yeah 80 quid each what's the trade on them
21:42if you wanted the for that match they could be 65 each
21:5150 quid each room by them
22:03at a dazzling antiques collection in north yorkshire shir khan and vicky are on the lookout for crowd
22:08places for their customers honestly this place is just so beautiful and you haven't even seen the
22:16half of it oh really oh god and vicky's discovered a set of four adjustable laboratory lights which could
22:22make great reading lamps for a chic bedroom 80 quid each what's the trade on them they could be
22:2965 each 50 quid each wouldn't buy them 55 would for that matching four for those four and obviously if you
22:42would like the the other one that could be another 55 it's nice when they're like they can sell them
22:49as a pair well i'm just thinking bedsides and stuff yeah do you know what i mean that's it pairs always
22:54sell better 250 for the five because there's not that much in them for me i'll do that for you
23:01yeah brilliant i'll have them thank you thank you the little science lab lights that vicky found
23:07fantastic you know the way she's rubbing off on me i found rubbing off on her tom really done her a
23:12favor on those she's not going to hold on to those for long they're going to go very quick
23:17the enamels they're quite nice aren't they the enamels yeah all indian enamels
23:21there's just something about them i don't know what half of them say but the color and the picture on
23:26them is just right i just like the fact that some of these have been repurposed so what they've done
23:31is they've had an original enamel and then they thought we don't need that anymore so we'll just
23:35use the back bsc shoes look manufactured in batanagar i'm i'm assuming it means batanagar shoe company bsc
23:46i would imagine that yeah yeah what kind of money can that one be that one could be 60. and the shoe one
23:53i would need 80 for the shoe one could we do 120 for both i could do 130. thank you very much
24:04the sanskrit writing graphically just looks absolutely amazing perfectly worn people love them
24:11i'm very happy with the price tom gave me a deal on those look above your head how genius is that
24:18rolling pins it's just an easy way to display them and it's got that dramatic effect
24:22they're cool aren't they yeah i'm sort of looking at these stools a little bit
24:26tom you've got a few of them dotted about those are chinese so these ones are known as spring benches
24:32they would be outside of shops restaurants and people would go outside and get the spring air
24:37they've got lovely color a lovely shape we get different styles depending on what region they're
24:42from so these are more simple um and then we have more heavily carved more decorative pieces
24:48pieces can i get this one out here and get a look at it and get a set on it of course
24:59you'll probably need a little bit of a dust but other than that it's ready to go i'll just use
25:04my bottom shall i give it a polish at the same time every single person needs either a stool
25:10or a bench or a small table but my customers don't like anything that's too fancy too ornamental
25:17and some of the ones that tom's got here are maybe just too much for them what's the trade on that one
25:2690. yeah i'll have that one thank you i reckon that might be the first of many tom
25:33so i was trying to pick something that i loved that had a little bit of different flavor to it
25:43but wouldn't be too far from a customer base and i picked one i think is just in the sweet spot
25:55another good day of picking for me and vicky um we went in i mean by the time we were even like two
26:01foot into the door her with the basket and me with the hip flasks we'd already turned a deal
26:08tom honestly he was very very fair to both myself and vicky leaving us plenty of room to make a profit
26:14as well you know we've come down here so he didn't disappoint it's been a really good day seeing sheer
26:20khan again and also meeting vicky for the first time as a dealer it's always important to meet new
26:26people in the trade connections you make normally last a lifetime once you have a good
26:31contact they remain a good contact thanks for that call loved it tom's great he is really nice guy
26:41for me which was really strange was i kind of slightly stepped into the old
26:47i don't want to call them industrial but slightly more utility yeah the lights the lights yeah that
26:55was me rubbing off on you do you think it was yeah it was but then i went and bought hip flasks
27:01to be used as little vases yeah yeah i used to sell
27:08from yorkshire shir khan and vicky are heading across the pennines to lancashire where shir khan is
27:13keen to call on another dealer he thinks will appeal to both their buying sensibilities and their customers
27:19so we're off to see rob from black dog retro interiors today yeah i know him there's a couple
27:28of fairs i do and i've seen him there he drives all the way down from here um down to london does he
27:34yeah good mid-century furniture you know really nice kind of seating so is that what he he specializes in
27:42yeah mid-century furniture and and he really does know what he's doing so he's got this place here
27:47i've never been before but from what i understand it's it's in a old factory or kind of warehouse
27:53setting brilliant yeah the fortunes of the preston area were transformed during the industrial revolution
28:04when machine-powered mills were built here to process cheap cotton harvested by enslaved people in the
28:10united states today one of the largest surviving mill buildings is home to independent local businesses
28:17and since 2023 its vast top floor has been taken over by a specialist in the clean
28:23functional design styles of the mid-20th century rob munt
28:31black dog retro interior started completely by accident it was just a bit of a side hustle and it just
28:37evolved bigger than my full-time job and it's grown every year since to start with with mid-century
28:43furniture i didn't have a clue about it whatsoever but the more i was buying it the more i got interested
28:49in it the design the materials and it just caught my eye and interest since then the stuff that we buy
28:56uh being being this is 50 60 year old it's not always in the best condition so we like to strip it
29:01refinish it reupholster it you know give it a new life in another 50 60 years
29:09oh wow yeah yeah one of them
29:19you all right rob how we doing you all right yeah not bad vicky how are you doing
29:25wow it's a big place you got here it's absolutely massive 12 000 square foot whoa is this open to
29:30the public yeah so we've got obviously we've got the showroom yeah and and then we've got workshop
29:35area around the back it's open to the public but by at the minute by appointment uh because we do nip in
29:40and out all the time yeah but most of it's it's all online if i can get it online fast enough
29:45i mean what an absolutely amazing building total british industrial the lift just just the build of
29:55this place he's really done it properly chairs on the walls dining tables and and chairs set up like
30:03they would be in a kitchen yeah he's done he's done his work i'm having a real look at that bench behind
30:08you because we're doing a little bit of work in the kitchen okay and i'm needing a little bench
30:16well i found you one yeah i'm looking at it thinking it might work i think that's quite nice
30:21it's not bad actually we're in a sea of you know mid-century furniture which has been picked
30:29and restored with such an expert eye yet i'm drawn to a pine bench in the corner and it's simply because
30:43it's a great size it's immaculate and i need one for my kitchen
30:51in all honesty i do but as a commercial piece to come in and out my shop it's perfect
30:58it's all solid it's all doweled it's you know there's no screws or anything it's a good got
31:02some got some good age to it nice old pine bench what could you do that for me for uh 160 on it uh 120
31:13120 yeah yeah i'll take that nice one thank you first one done first one done i know what i'm like
31:21it'll come off the van it'll get photographed it'll go on to socials and it'll sell like that
31:26and it'll probably never even get measured to go to the house he's all ready to go rob these
31:33yep they're danish as well yeah home guard yeah they do a lot of very similar lamps as well yeah
31:40yeah and they've got like white on the inside it's kind of like opaline yeah in the inside but it's not
31:46just kind of like painted it is an actual like a layer of white glass there's two lights there
31:53they're danish they're by coming called home guard they're very desirable things you can get them in
31:58various colors like purples um oranges and yellows just that kind of droplet shape diffuses the light
32:04amazingly and they have this little just such a small detail it's a little teak top that the cable
32:11runs through it's just very very well designed you're looking at something from the 60s that even
32:17today looks totally modern it was a pioneering danish countess henrietta dannis guild samso who
32:25in 1825 harnessed energy from a local peat bog to heat the furnaces of a small glass workshop
32:33by the 20th century home guard had become a danish design powerhouse
32:38these elegant 1960s teardrop pendant lights are highly saleable and sold as a pair shere khan thinks
32:45they could be worth around 800 pounds it's got you've got 295 on one and 225 on the other
32:54yeah what's what's the very best on those 400 it's been a week of introducing vicky to new contacts
33:11and discovering customer favorites and at a stunning mid-century antiques display in lancashire
33:17jir khan's found a pair of danish designed glass lampshades he knows he'll have no problem selling
33:23what's what's the very best on those 400
33:31yeah i'll do this 400 yeah nice one nice one they're fabulous they are they're really good looking
33:37things rob gives me a very good price on the pair you know all i can do is shake his hand
33:47i get a lot of chairs from the czech republic i'm assuming they they come to you upholstered
33:52from there innit no oh they don't no you gotta do all that here yeah wow depending on how good the
33:57finish is we'll strip them refinish them yeah so you're putting a lot of work into these oh yeah yeah
34:04so mid-century is very hard it's not like selling other vintage or industrial items where you can
34:11keep them looking their worn selves with mid-century your customer wants to see it perfect so your
34:18restorations have to be perfect so this area here is this is the to-do area we all have one of them
34:27yeah yeah but these are the good parts these are the parts i like
34:34straight away i see a cream herbert terry angle poise it's an early one reason why i know it's
34:39early one there's no plastic fittings it's all metal
34:45then he has a small metek i thought at first that it was maybe a re-spray because it's like a pink
34:51but on further kind of inspection i think that might be originally pink best on that
35:00100 quid and that one best on that 30 quid take both of those 30 quid not even going to argue with
35:09that price well they all look quite similar but they're all slightly different what's this bad boy in
35:20here all right so what is it like the tree root we're kind of in a forest of design led mid-century
35:29upholstery and sort of stuffed under some cushions i could just see this sort of gnarly arm it's the
35:36ball root yeah it's the center yeah you know they make um bowls out of them as well yeah this one's been
35:43painted yeah yeah it's been tucked away i'm gonna get it blasted and yeah can i just say it doesn't
35:50look like it should be here mixed in with all this other stuff i do buy random stuff that just
35:57catches my eye as well yeah how much is this robe
36:0280 quid
36:05yeah yeah i will have that okay thank you very much it's one of those root stumpy chairs and it's sort of
36:13carved out of one big hunk of teak or something but what i loved about it was somebody chucked a
36:22coat of paint over it left it outside and it had that kind of weathered look like it had just been
36:28sitting there unloved
36:33so these are again all projects rob yeah everything just needs stripping refinished
36:39it's quite a sweet wee thing what is it
36:43i got it from when i was picking up a sideboard
36:48they had like magazines in it and then books and stuff in it i don't know if it was someone's made it
36:54or if it came like that i don't know but it was quirky when i first looked at it i thought it was
37:00just kind of little like a little bookshelf but there's also a part in the middle of it for magazines
37:06or books it's just really well designed really well made it's too well made to be scratch built
37:12what kind of money is it 40 quid i can't say no to 40 quid on that no you can't
37:17that's that's a really nice thing the utility there is amazing very well thought about
37:26this unusual bookcase could be the work of 20th century designer isicon known as the isicon donkey
37:33due to its four legs and angled shelving that resembled panniers carried by a donkey bookcases
37:39like these were later renamed the penguin donkey as the shelves were the same size as the famous orange
37:44colored penguin paperbacks dating from the 1960s this cool modernist piece should be a great fit for
37:51shir khan's customers and if it is a genuine original then it could be worth around 500 pounds
38:03i'm just looking at this wee table it's an old school desk yeah what is that
38:07so it's a kid's desk kid's desk yeah i think it's got a good look and a good shape i think
38:18and it doesn't move or anything no it's just just as as it is quite like the the way the legs
38:26display like that this is where i have no understanding of how my brain works to be honest
38:32with you i have walked past 20 30 40 50 tables today but i didn't really see a margin in any of them
38:41and then i just saw this tapered compass type leg and i thought that looks quite interesting
38:48turns out it's like a little school table but it's got a little bit of a look how much is it
38:5660 quid it's not needing any actual work is it no no it's solid cosmetic yeah 60 pounds i'll have that
39:07thank you it can be used as a coffee table it can be used as a stool it can sit in a hallway for
39:14whatever reason it drew me to it that's what ultimately will sell it for me
39:26it's been really good for me to come here see rob in his own natural environment me and vicky
39:32we both bought some great stuff from rob today my home guard pendant lights i think they tip the scale
39:39i think they're great things it's been good having uh shekin and vicky around today
39:44and i think they found some good good bargains and i've made a few sales happy
39:49rob thank you very much man no thank you thanks for coming hello won't be too long till i see you
39:54again down london yeah a couple of weeks yeah we'll see you there have a good one you too take care
39:58see you later thank you
40:07in his north london workshop restorer j is starting work on the mercury glass lampshade
40:13shere khan snaps off at eight man right first just gonna give him wipe down see how much of the green
40:20paint comes off this one is a challenge for me i've rewired and restored mercury lights before but none this far
40:30gone all right whoa it is just coming off with a soft brush my brother wants it back up and green
40:45again i don't think there's gonna be any green left by the end of this
40:48as the hundred year old green enamel paint flakes away it takes some of the silvery reflective layer
40:56underneath with it you know that green uh mercury light yeah it's not green it's glass it's all
41:03crumbled off yep wow if you spray these are you just gonna have to get this all off no i'm gonna leave
41:09it you're gonna leave these little bits yeah and but still spray silver over yeah so there's some of
41:14the so this is left on there so when people look underneath they're gonna be able to see the old
41:20and the new hold and the new all right yeah that's what i reckon you should do good luck
41:28rather than remove all the old reflective paint jay's plan is to preserve the originality
41:34by sealing what's left of it under a modern silver based mirror paint
41:41right the mirror spray is dried now all areas covered once we remove that you're going to see
41:46it's going to have a mirror effect coming through the glass
41:52with the reflective surface originally intended by the designer now restored a primer can be applied
41:58before a new coat of enamel paint in the vintage green shade shirkan knows his customers are looking
42:06for that looks okay for now i'm gonna leave it for a while let it dry
42:20i'm pretty happy with the enamel spray because it's a pretty thick coat there's no drips no nothing so
42:26it looks really nice all right and then as you can see the original mercury glass what was left as i
42:33was scraping off and then the other bits are all the mirror spray i'm happy with that now getting the
42:41light fitting on and getting it lit up
42:44i like that that is really nice
42:58with their brilliance restored the mercury lamps are ready for sale along with the rest of the week's
43:03haul of best sellers so everywhere we went this week we came up trumps found exactly what we were looking
43:11for got some really nice indian enamel signs from eight man especially the batangar shoot factory one
43:18then sambri antiques always delivers the lion that was probably my favorite buy of this week animals
43:26in ceramic animals in paper mache metal animals they they just sell people love them this lion it's got
43:33size it's got looks it won't hang around for long so this week it's been a lot of items that will turn
43:40over quickly and they'll have a really good margin in them so happy
