00:01Once upon a time, a beautiful woman and her infant washed up on the shore of a little island called Samishima.
00:09They were both weak and terribly ill, so the village chief and his son did everything they could to nurse them back to health.
00:17One day, the woman told them she hailed from across the sea.
00:21She said she used to work at a bean confectionary in town.
00:25She fell in love with a married shopkeeper and gave birth to his child.
00:29She was cast out. The cruel confectioner even hired brigands to chase her away.
00:35Two years after they washed ashore, the confectioner's men showed up on the island and cornered them.
00:41You see, the shopkeeper and his wife were unable to conceive.
00:45They did the unthinkable and tore the woman's child from her grasp.
00:49As for her, they struck her down with their swords and threw her into the merciless sea.
00:55As the men began the journey home to collect their payment, the sea grew angry.
01:00A storm appeared as if from nowhere, and a horrifying creature towered over the terrified criminals.
01:05They abandoned the helpless child and tried to flee for their lives, but before long, the raging sea swallowed them whole.
01:12The grotesque merfolk resembled the slain mother, but there was no trace of her former beauty, as she had become a malevolent spirit.
01:20Following the instructions of Koetsu, a priest who had come to the island, the village chief's son said a prayer to quell her anger.
01:30Afterward, they presented the mummified child as an offering, and the violent storm subsided.
01:37Such is the tragic tale of how Samashima came to be known as Merfolk Island.
01:44As for her, she had come to be known as Merfolk Island.
01:46Now don't move a single millimeter!
01:48You outsiders ruined our sacred festival.
02:03It's not for you.
02:05It's for the islanders and my family.
02:07What was that arrow?
02:09No, sir. You won't get away with this.
02:12I knew you were suspicious, which is why I've been watching you!
02:15You don't say. Guess that's what your mama told you to do, eh, sonny?
02:20I am suspicious, cause I know everything.
02:22Old man Oedipus, a demented little vixen and a monstrous hag.
02:26I doubt it'll make much of a difference, but I'll go ahead and say it anyway.
02:30You're a sorry excuse for a president!
02:32Who exactly are you?
02:35What was with that arrow? What's that glowing lamp?
02:39What did you do to help the Mori boy?
02:41And how is it possible the other kid came out of this uninjured?
02:44That's some pretty clear thinking for a glorified puppet.
02:47It's wasted potential.
02:49You're good with words and quick-witted.
02:51Careful with that. It's a knife for butchering fish, isn't it?
02:55I don't detect many openings. You practice a martial art, don't you?
02:59You clearly had a decent upbringing. You're even fairly good-looking considering how old you are.
03:04He'd be a decent catch if he ever weaned off of Mama's milk.
03:08Anyway, no one wants to see a middle-aged man school an old-timer.
03:12Let's not and say we did.
03:14Besides, there's still Boss Hag and Lady Landmine.
03:17Hate to break it to you, but if this were an anime, you'd have zero stands.
03:21The big bad boss needs to at least be young and handsome, you know?
03:25Don't you dare insult my family!
03:27Some family.
03:29Pulled straight out of that old legend.
03:33With a head resembling an infant.
03:37And the body of a woman.
03:41It lures men into the sea with its voice.
03:46I know your dirty little secret.
03:48Your family is the hideous merfolk!
03:51This is Wimpy3.
03:53This is Wimpy3.
05:36Are you crazy? That thing is really sharp!
05:38Saying your opinion makes you the enemy of peace.
05:41Mother was right once again.
05:43Kirihara brought Calamity to the island.
05:46Calamity arrives as a monster disguising itself as human.
05:49That's how it works in the fairy tales Mother tells me.
05:52And though his form is derivative, his bow skills are utterly unparalleled.
05:56He's a complete monster.
05:58Everything Mama says has turned out to be true.
06:00Which means our peaceful island is under threat.
06:05Tell me, do you have a mother or your own family?
06:10Not really.
06:12I'd already assumed that was the case.
06:14You grew up to be such a bad boy because you didn't have a mother's love to help guide you.
06:18You're painfully jealous of my loving family.
06:21You poor wretched soul.
06:24Children who don't know the warmth of family are doomed to become miscreants.
06:28Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
06:29I feel sorry for you.
06:31Mama always tells me how lucky I am to be filled with her love.
06:34And since love is as essential as breathing, you must be positively suffocating.
06:40I'm sorry.
06:41It's not your fault.
06:42But that's just how it is.
06:43In all the old stories people like to tell, anyone who doesn't have love in their life is a bad guy.
06:50Don't forget.
06:52The bad guys are always going to lose to good boys like me.
06:55And everybody's always anxiously awaiting the moment when the villains are defeated by the forces of good.
07:01Which is why I'm a hero.
07:03For taking out the evil people on the island.
07:05Mother showers me with praise for doing so well and that makes me even stronger.
07:10The true meaning of life is doing whatever mama tells me.
07:16You've jumped off the deep end.
07:18Thank you for being a classic villain.
07:20I believe now's the part where I kill you.
07:25But I easily cut the bow.
07:35What happened?
07:36Die unenlightened.
07:37And your spirit is then sent to one of the six paths.
07:40As you might expect, the hell path is the most torturous one of all.
07:43It has eight greater hells and eight cold hells, each with their own realms.
07:47Also...
07:48Actually, that's enough about that.
07:51The Black Thread Hell is one of the eight greater hells.
07:54There, the dead are tied up and punished with long ropes.
07:57This is one of the ropes used for that purpose.
08:00Used to be black once.
08:01Before all the blood.
08:03It's not easily cut by earthly objects.
08:06I can't tell if you're insane or just trying to scare me!
08:09By the way, I've got a question for you.
08:11If your mama's so great, why didn't she at least teach you the basics?
08:14You know, things like not pointing sharp objects at people.
08:17Seems more important than her weird lessons on love.
08:19Don't you ever insult my mama, you monster!
08:22I only know what she taught me!
08:24Who's the nut job now?
08:26Come on, man!
08:30Just think for yourself for a change!
08:32No!
08:33Mama!
08:35No!
08:38Poor baby.
08:40Good thing I'm living as a fully grown 30-year-old.
08:43If I were his age, this little scuffle would have taken forever.
08:50Dang it, not good!
08:55We can't just let him die!
08:57Even if I tried shooting an earthly arrow,
08:59I'm afraid I don't have nearly enough power to exercise a spirit as OP as that merfolk!
09:04Damn it!
09:04Yeah!
09:11There you are!
09:11I was just starting to worry!
09:13In that moment, something went from a bit hazy to crystal clear.
09:38The fact that Ikebukuro is a fierce creature who demands respect!
09:43Well, there's one more reason not to slack off in the professor's glasses!
09:50You're a lifesaver! Thank you both for coming to help!
09:53I've been curious as to why it's shaped like merfolk.
09:56Aside from how it came to exist in the first place, that was my biggest lingering question.
10:01Uh-huh.
10:02And now, we can uncover its true identity.
10:05Mikibukuro! If you pull on its head, I'll buy you your very own squid spinner, okay?!
10:10Nabashima! Don't fail me! You're by far the coolest creature here!
10:16Now pull the thing's tail!
10:40And no problem, no!
10:58The pearl bung's little too human and a fishy!
11:01Ugh! It's a shark!
11:03Shark!
11:05How fascinating.
11:07Shark attacks have long plagued the island.
11:09However, we do get the occasional
11:11Great White and Tiger Shark around these waters.
11:13There are even records of it from the Edo period.
11:16This place used to be called Samishima,
11:18otherwise known as Shark Island.
11:21This book describes the origin of the merfolk legend.
11:24As someone who grew up here,
11:26I imagine you're familiar with it.
11:28It's fairly standard for a folktale.
11:30There's even a priest who shows up.
11:33The author of this one is Yutaro Kirihara.
11:36Meaning, Yuhachi's father wrote this story.
11:39Great-great-grandpa! No way!
11:41Yes way. I suggest you peruse the contents.
11:46Old man Haneda got drunk and told me a strange story.
11:50He said that several generations before he was born,
11:54the ancestors of the Samajima family
11:56came to this little island of ours.
11:58Apparently, there's a bit of truth to the island's legend.
12:01The Samajima ancestor who was the village chief
12:04sold the woman's child to the confectioner's hired men.
12:08The woman was distraught and chased after the boat,
12:11but she was attacked by a shark.
12:13The islanders struck the shark with harpoons,
12:16killing the creature at the cost of their own lives.
12:18Both the woman and her child perished as well.
12:22Their lifeless bodies washed up on what has since come to be known as merfolk rock.
12:27After my son, Yuhachi, was discharged,
12:29he once told me that he could see the merfolk.
12:35It's painfully clear what happened.
12:37The island's dark past created a part-human, part-fish mass of spirits.
12:42Years of unchecked growth transformed the monster into a true behemoth.
12:46A common folklore trope,
12:48some poor human dies while experiencing powerful emotions.
12:51Their spirit possesses a nearby animal,
12:54turning it into a monster.
12:56For example, the bakeneko.
12:59It's just like in Santo Kyorin's Baika Hioretsu,
13:02but that was a goldfish.
13:03The warning about not eating beans in the old woman's presence
13:06likely comes from that story as well.
13:09Um, professor,
13:10please allow me to pay for the exorcism.
13:13I only work part-time,
13:15but I'll pay you when I get a proper job.
13:17Very noble,
13:19but the debt is paid.
13:21In rare books.
13:22In addition to those,
13:24there's one more.
13:25A first edition of the Restaurant of Many Orders.
13:28It's perfect.
13:29Mint.
13:30I assure you it's quite valuable.
13:32Your great-grandfather gave it to me.
13:34He said it was a token of his appreciation for looking after you.
13:39As for Mogura,
13:42he gets the moth-eaten rucksack.
13:44I don't want that!
13:47I'm glad you're here, professor!
13:48I was assaulted!
13:49This vagrant hit this old man right in the head!
13:51He used a metal lamp or something!
13:53Just look at this wound!
13:55There's nothing there, old man.
13:57Uh,
13:57it couldn't have healed so quickly!
14:00You had yourself a little slipski and it knocked you out.
14:03You must have been hallucinating.
14:04That doesn't make a lick of sense!
14:06How do you explain that pool of blood right there?
14:08Someone butchered a fish and forgot to clean up.
14:11Impossible!
14:12On another note,
14:13you see anything out of the ordinary?
14:15Cause it's no hallucination.
14:18Uh...
14:19I wouldn't say we're exactly close buddies now,
14:31but there's definitely a deep bond between us.
14:34It's the price you pay for what you've done.
14:36Take a good look.
14:37Mama!
14:39Mama!
14:40Mama!
14:41Mama!
14:43Pathetic.
14:44Magi and Yae were able to adjust to the spirit world pretty fast.
14:48But this is how stubborn people tend to react.
14:51I wonder when that geezer will finally snap out of it.
14:54So that's what happens when your sand hits zero.
14:57Mama!
14:58Mama!
15:00Help me!
15:01Mama!
15:02Let's have a quick breather.
15:07I just need a minute.
15:09You two had better take the motorbikes to go and join Mogura.
15:13We'll mosey down to the shore and see if there's anything we can do to help out.
15:17It sure seemed like a good idea,
15:19but going downhill on foot is harder on the knees than I expected.
15:22Seems like you can barely stand.
15:25Once you're over 30,
15:27your body becomes your greatest enemy.
15:29But you're in such good shape,
15:31I bet you'll be fine even when you're 50 years old.
15:33I bet so too!
15:35My 80-year-old grandma actually competes in triathlons!
15:38Let me carry you!
15:39Oh wow!
15:40Perhaps I'll take you up on that kind offer.
15:46Amazing!
15:47My knees already feel better!
15:55What are you gals up to?
15:56We were in a hurry to reach the shore,
15:59but then my poor knees gave out.
16:01Where are you going?
16:02To the shore!
16:03An islander fell into the sea,
16:05so now I need to go down and check on him.
16:07But no need to worry,
16:08I hear he's doing just fine.
16:10It's a miracle!
16:11Yippee!
16:12Anyway,
16:13please hop in!
16:14Ah!
16:17I was wondering,
16:19have you ever left the island?
16:21Hmm?
16:21I really think you should give it some thought.
16:24That sounds like a delightful idea.
16:26But I could never leave the island
16:27when there's so much work to do.
16:29I bet you could find plenty of jobs
16:31in the outside world.
16:33And you'd be able to experience some new things.
16:36For example,
16:37you could be a dominatrix!
16:39Huh?
16:40Huh?
16:41Oh, never mind.
16:45Okay.
16:46And what did you mean by that?
16:48That's a great idea!
16:50No one asks your opinion!
16:52We'd be customers!
16:53It would be an honor to be filleted by you!
16:56You sound like some backwards islanders!
16:58And please stop talking in unison like that!
17:01There's clearly a demand in the market,
17:03and you're the perfect genre of person to pull it off!
17:06What does that even mean?
17:08And Tokyo is terrifying!
17:10A professor's wife, huh?
17:12Who knew someone like you would be such a total oddball?
17:15Forgive me!
17:18Except,
17:18don't you think the truly odd thing here
17:20is what you did to Mori?
17:23Where is this coming from?
17:26Dark deeds always come to light.
17:28It's rude to accuse someone based on conjecture.
17:31You're such a smart girl.
17:33Even when you're caught off guard,
17:34you don't lose your cool and make it worse.
17:37You're most certainly competent.
17:39And that's why I would strongly encourage you
17:41to leave the island,
17:42especially while you're young.
17:44I don't need advice from an old woman!
17:47It's a good idea to listen to your elders every now and then.
17:50You're starting to scare me with all this stuff.
17:52I don't know what you think you found out about me,
17:55but I need you to stop this nonsense.
17:57You don't have to concern yourself with me.
18:00How do you feel about your fellow islanders?
18:02And about Mori?
18:04And are those gentlemen your valued colleagues?
18:08You can't be serious!
18:10They're servants!
18:11We employ helpers as well,
18:12but we still value them.
18:14That's enough!
18:15Servants aren't merely servants!
18:17They exist to please me!
18:18So you finally admitted how you truly feel!
18:21I heard a nasty rumor that your family has been known
18:24to eliminate anyone who isn't part of your bloodline.
18:27I'm not one to criticize how other families operate,
18:30but it's a bit much to even take out spouses
18:32and only trust your own blood.
18:34How do you know all that about my family?
18:36And I haven't even mentioned the fact that you lack a strong male role model in your life.
18:41Yummy role model!
18:43Oh, and you're obsessed with forcing those around you to obey your every whim.
18:47That's why it upset you so very much when Mori wouldn't obey your command to go out with you.
18:54Shut your stupid mouth!
18:55Who do you think you are?
18:57An adult who's responsible for guiding children like you!
19:00I am not a child!
19:02I'm 20 years old!
19:03Go crawling back to your husband with that vapid smile of yours and leave me alone!
19:07I don't need a man to rule over this island!
19:09All spouses are just outsiders anyway!
19:12It's a false game to believe in romantic love!
19:14Forbidden technique unleashed!
19:20Activate!
19:21Back when I was 18, Toshido told me something beautiful
19:25when he gave me this pretty little ring I'm wearing.
19:31You're both okay!
19:33Thank goodness!
19:36I see you two came to join the party.
19:40Tell me what happened.
19:41Gotta be making that up!
19:46There isn't a man alive who really talks like that!
19:48It's simply impossible!
19:50And besides, I don't need to find a man to live a fulfilling life!
19:54We can talk like that?
19:56I don't care!
19:57It doesn't count if you at least say that stuff out of obedience!
20:00You sure?
20:01Try it!
20:02We'd say anything you'd want us to!
20:04Or perhaps I don't want to know what happened.
20:06So, did Ikebukuro do a good job?
20:09He's still at work.
20:10Feasting on the folk of the merfolk.
20:22It's the merfolk's final stand!
20:24It's targeting her because she's overwhelmed by sadness!
20:28Help me!
20:29Please!
20:30Something's holding me down!
20:32This is a sound machine, the girl!
20:33Isn't anyone gonna save her?
20:35Leave it to me!
20:36No, Shio!
20:40No, Shio!
20:41That was under your clothes!
20:45Shio, were you planning to swim or something?
20:48Gotta be beach ready at all times, so I wore this!
20:51Instead of underwear.
20:52You do know what you're wearing isn't classified as beach wear.
20:55Maybe she wanted to go long distance swimming?
20:58But if you wore that instead of underwear, you'd have to go commando afterward.
21:01Red alert!
21:04I told you the red currents are crazy here!
21:07It's me!
21:09Oh!
21:10My magical red panda and I almost died in that same current.
21:23On that fateful day, a new merfolk legend was born.
21:27It is said that a young woman of enormous strength swam like a mighty fish and rescued the village chief's beautiful daughter.
21:36Given the lovely creature's superhuman speed, there could be no doubt that she was, in fact, the island's fabled merfolk.
21:43At least, that's how Grandma Haneda would describe the event.
21:48Oh, guess I have to go commando now.
21:50Hmm.
21:51Would have thought President Samajima would be here.
21:53Merfolk are way scarier than I ever knew!
22:02Hmm.
22:03Hmm.
