00:00I'm Johnny. I'm from New York City, 102.7 Radio. Such a massive fan. It's such an honor to get a
00:06couple minutes with the both of you. Talking about the beginning stages of Stranger Things,
00:11I'm a Long Island guy. I spend a lot of time in Montauk. Now, I don't know if a lot of people
00:17know this, but I do believe that initially you were modeling the show based on some conspiracies
00:21in Montauk. Can you tell us to any OG conspiracies from Montauk still live within Hawkins?
00:28I mean, again, that's one of the reasons the idea came about, because we had an old, old
00:36movie idea based on the Montauk experiments and the various conspiracy theories there.
00:42But there's so much, there's so many ideas in those conspiracy theories.
00:47Do you mind giving one or two conspiracies?
00:48Everything under this sign. It was, yeah, obviously children being experimented on, other dimensions.
00:56Monsters.
00:56And of course, just a government lab. So, I mean, all those ideas really are still in
01:02the DNA of the show and continue to be in today.
01:05I heard something about like an invisible ship or something that surfaced one day.
01:09Yeah, that's the Philadelphia Experiment.
01:11That predated it. And we put that in the Broadway penalty. We did a document. We've always been
01:16into this stuff. So we put, we did a documentary in the Philadelphia Experiment back in high
01:20school. So, which I think led us to finding that Montauk project, which is a little bit deeper cut and is an outgrowth
01:26of MKUltra for people who want to get, go deep on this stuff. It's pretty fun to read about. But that's actually why the show is in the 80s. It had nothing to do with us wanting to pay homage to 80s. It's because the Montauk project took place in the early 80s.
01:39Wow. So we, and then at a certain point, we're like, oh, that's cool, actually. It lets us, you know, pay tribute to some of these movies as well. But that's why.
01:47Such beautifully done shows. So thank you guys so much for this treat. Thank you.
01:51Wow. That's crazy. I didn't know any of that. It's amazing. That's so cool. Yeah. I'm Megan Holliday from K-Rock in Los Angeles and Live 105 in San Francisco. You may have answered this in the past, but when you guys started writing this show, did you have some kind of concept or idea about how you would inevitably end it?
02:11The truth is, like, season one, we weren't sure we were going to get a season two. And we were so stressed out, we were just focused on making a good season. So not a whole lot was mapped out. At a certain point, Netflix did go, you know, do you actually understand this mythology? We're like, yes. Or like, can you write it down for us? So we spent a little while and we wrote a 20-page mythology document.
02:36So a lot of the stuff in there were revealing in this season. Like, it hasn't been revealed until now. And then, yeah, once we got a season two and the show was successful and we realized it might go on, we really took some time to figure out what we wanted to do, how it would work as an ongoing series.
02:59But then, you know, it evolved as it was going. So we had all these ideas, but then the actors surprise you, the story surprises you, you learn what works and what doesn't. So, yeah, I mean, it's, you know, season five is certainly different than I would have imagined it was, you know, it was going to be like seven years ago.
03:17So the one thing we knew was the final scene of the show. So we always knew, or at least for the past seven years or so, we knew what the final scene won, which was great.
03:24It was like a huge relief that we had in North Star. So we were like, okay, we know we're building to this. We're confident that that works. So we just have to get there.
03:34Yeah. Awesome. Thank you.
03:36Hi, I'm Julia from Alt 98.7 in Detroit.
03:39The show's score, I feel like, isn't something to be taken lightly. Music is such a moment in this show.
03:46There's so many moments that are built around the music. So what is your favorite musical memory from it?
03:50And what are songs that maybe you were hoping would be a part of it, but just for whatever reason didn't work?
03:55Oh, man. You know, a lot of it when we're approaching, we did it starting with season one with The Clash, where it's like the goal is when we're putting in a song, we put a lot of thought into it.
04:04And we really wanted to both reflect on the characters and the narrative journey.
04:08I mean, which obviously Kate Bush and Running Up That Hill was sort of, I guess, what we would see is like the pinnacle of that, of merging character and has a narrative purpose in the show.
04:20And I think as opposed to just putting in songs that we like or make us feel nostalgic.
04:24Cool needle drops or whatever.
04:26Yeah, it's always like, yeah, how can this actually affect the narrative in a cool way?
04:31I think we've got most songs that we wanted in there. Am I correct?
04:36This final season, we've done a few where I'm like, that we've been wanting to get in and finally we got them in.
04:42I know, I can't talk. I'm particularly stoked about one needle drop in the final episode.
04:46I can't talk about, but that, because it's never been in a, they've never allowed it to be in a TV show.
04:52No.
04:52I don't think so.
04:53No.
04:53Or film.
04:54And I don't think without the Kate Bush effect from season four.
04:57It would have never happened.
04:58It never would have happened, but that really did open up a few final sort of closed doors for us.
05:03We actually had some really rad bands reaching out and be like, we'll give you whatever you want for free.
05:10And I was like, I wish we could, you're cool. I wish we could figure this out.
05:13Yeah, we tried to squeeze some of them in, but again, you don't want to, you don't want to force it.
05:17But it was, yeah, this year was wild because people just saw what happened with Kate Bush.
05:22It's like they're auditioning.
05:23They're like, everyone raised their hand.
05:25The other thing I always had was like, we can't, we didn't expect the running of the whole thing to happen.
05:28So you can't, like, it would be, to try to do that again, it would be like Home Alone 2.
05:34It's just going to be like some watered down version of the same thing.
05:37It's just going to be disappointing.
05:38So we didn't, there's not a quote, unquote, like running of the hill moment.
05:42Like we didn't, we didn't even try because it would have just been, it wouldn't have been the same.
05:47Yeah.
05:47Never Ending Story was my favorite musical moment.
05:50Oh yeah.
05:50Whose idea was it for that song?
05:51Because it's so perfectly hilarious.
05:54I can't, it was, it was someone from our writer's room.
05:57Was it?
05:58I can't remember.
05:59I can't remember who it was, but we, again, it came more out of narrative than us wanting to get it.
06:03And we wanted Susie to force Dustin to do something embarrassing.
06:07Yeah, that scene is so funny.
06:08Originally, it was something.
06:09No, it was like, was it a, it was a song from one of the Lord of the Rings books.
06:13Like March of the Ents.
06:14Something really, yeah.
06:15March of the Ents.
06:16But then we realized Amazon had Lord of the Rings and we, and we weren't allowed to do it.
06:20Which, I don't think we actually approached Amazon.
06:24We did look into it.
06:25No, we didn't.
06:26They would have said that.
06:27They would have told us to F off for sure.
06:30No, and then I, I will admit though, I was like, I was like the holdout.
06:35I was, I was not convinced that Never Ending Story moment was going to work.
06:37I was like, the stakes are too high.
06:39It's just too, you know, too ridiculous.
06:41But they, anyway, I was persuaded eventually, thankfully.
06:45Yeah, so funny.
06:46The fact that you guys are twins and, you know, working together with family,
06:49I can only imagine the discussions behind the scenes on set.
06:54Can you tell us, I mean, if it was the Never Ending Story, sure.
06:57What was the biggest disagreement that the two of you had during the filming of Stranger Things?
07:02I know what he's going to, I know what you're going to say.
07:04Yeah.
07:06Yeah, he loves when I bring this up, but it's true.
07:09The title, Stranger Things, because it was originally, as you were talking about Montauk,
07:13it was originally called Montauk for the longest time.
07:17And so when we moved it out of Montauk, we needed a new title.
07:20And I remember being so excited with this title, I came up with, Stranger Things.
07:25And I, like, excited, like, I even, like, in Photoshop, I did it in the rough version of the font,
07:30like on a Stephen King book.
07:31I was so confident.
07:32I showed, ran into the office and showed, and I said, Ross, I got it, and showed it to him.
07:36And he went, no.
07:37And then it was, like, a month-long struggle.
07:43Eventually, he came around.
07:45Yeah.
07:46But a lot of people didn't.
07:47Like, I got a, we got, after we picked the title, it was, like, a really, really long email from David Harbour
07:54telling us what a terrible title it was.
07:56To be fair, it's hard when we all lived with Montauk for so long.
08:01And so when you, and when you have to change the title, it's just, it was really jarring at first.
08:06But I'll admit I was, I was wrong on this one.
08:08Wow.
08:09Do you still have PTSD?
08:10Like, can you see Stranger Things and bring yourself back to that?
08:13I know.
08:14I can't, I can't imagine it being called Montauk.
08:16Right?
08:17Because it seems kind of, like, bland now.
08:19I was, like, and would it have been successful with that name?
08:23I don't know.
08:24Maybe people would have thought it was a show about fishing or boating.
08:27Yeah.
08:27No, that's the thing.
08:28It doesn't really capture, like, Stranger Things immediately tells you, oh, there's strange things happening.
08:35And also, it's like, if people are watching, this is weird.
08:37Well, it said so on the title.
08:38Like, it just, like, calms people who may not be into the supernatural stuff.
08:43I don't know.
08:43So, anyway, we're lucky, I think, that all that worked out and Ross came to his senses.
08:48Okay.
08:49Thanks for sharing that.
08:50Yeah.
08:50What do you guys feel like sets season five apart from all the rest?
08:56Oh, man.
08:56Well, it's in-game, you know?
08:58So, you know, everything really comes full circle.
09:02And I think a big difference with this season from the others is that our, you know, our heroes are immediately starting in episode one.
09:12They're searching for Vecna.
09:14They're active.
09:15Normally, we're like, oh, doo-doo-doo.
09:16They're going about their normal life.
09:18And then something supernatural happens that kicks the mysteries off.
09:22But in this case, it's like they're going and they're active.
09:25Eleven's training.
09:27And it really is just, from beginning to end, it just moves as a roller coaster.
09:31The other thing is, you know, everybody's story comes to an end.
09:36So, it's the end of everybody's emotional journey.
09:40It's the end of the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down.
09:44So, in that way, I think it's unique and definitely the most emotional season we've had.
09:50Well, I know all of us are just so excited to see, I mean, everybody in the world is really excited to see where this is going to go.
09:58So, yeah, just thank you guys for everything you've done, for giving us all this entertainment for the last ten years, you know?
10:06We appreciate it.
10:07Yeah.
10:08Here we go.
10:10Dare I say, I speak for everybody, one of, if not the best show ever made.
10:15I'm not just kissing your ass either.
10:17Episode one, season one, we all thank you.
10:22That means a lot.
