Where in the EU sees the most long-term unemployment?

Southern EU nations and France see the highest rates of long-term joblessness, according to new Eurostat data, hitting migrants, people with disabilities, the youth, and those with less education the hardest.

00:00Where in the EU are most people unemployed for more than a year?
00:07In 2024, 4.2 million people across the EU had been unemployed for a year or more.
00:15Around 1 in 3 unemployed people in the EU has been out of work and actively seeking employment for at least a year.
00:21Some of the highest long-term unemployment rates were observed in southern EU countries and several of France's outermost regions.
00:29That is according to the latest data from Eurostat.
00:32The highest rates were registered in the autonomous Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta at 16.3% and 15.8% respectively.
00:42The French outermost region of Guadeloupe was the only other region in the EU with a double-digit rate at 11.4%.
00:50Three regions in southern Italy also had long-term unemployment rates of at least 8%.
00:56By contrast, the lowest rate in the EU was observed in four regions in the Czech Republic and in the Netherlands where there was a 0.4% long-term unemployment rate.
01:07In 52 regions across the EU, the long-term unemployment rate was also under 1%.
01:13Most of these areas were found in northern Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, northwestern Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Malta.
01:22Long-term unemployment can lead to poverty, high levels of stress, low self-esteem, family dysfunction and depression.
