00:00Today marks Labour Day, but how healthy is Europe's working environment?
00:08More than 840,000 people died each year from health conditions linked to job strain,
00:14such as long working hours and workplace harassment.
00:18These psychosocial risks can cause depression, burnout and cancer among workers,
00:22while companies are in turn hit with lower staff retention and absenteeism.
00:27While cardiovascular diseases cause most of the attributable deaths,
00:31mental disorders are most likely to cause workers to lose healthy life years,
00:36reflecting their chronic and disabling nature.
00:39This results in an estimated loss of 1.37% of global GDP and of 1.43% in Europe
00:47and Central Asia.
00:48In Europe, nearly one in three workers reports job-related stress, depression or anxiety,
00:54with women reporting these problems more frequently than men.
00:58Stigma around mental health remains a major global barrier to prevention and support at work,
01:04according to the International Labour Organization.
01:07In Greece, Cyprus, France and Italy, most workers fear negative consequences
01:12if they discuss mental health with their manager,
01:15while in the Nordic countries, about 80% of workers feel comfortable doing so.
01:20In the EU, the annual costs of work-related depression are estimated to exceed 100 billion euros,
01:26with employers bearing more than 80% of the burden.
