00:00What I'm about to tell you is something that has no explanation.
00:16It's the strangest thing that has ever happened to me or anyone I personally know.
00:21I work late hours at a dive bar about 30 minutes from my house.
00:25It's not really by choice, it's just how things are when you live out in a more rural area.
00:30There are not a ton of jobs close to home, so you take what you can get.
00:34The bar itself isn't anything special, but it's steady work and most nights are pretty uneventful.
00:39The night this all happened was no different.
00:42My shift had gone by without much happening, and after closing everything up, I got in my car and started the drive home.
00:49Most of the way back is nothing but a series of winding back roads.
00:53Hardly any traffic, barely any lights, barely any cars, barely any anything honestly.
00:58Just long stretches of curves, cutting through woods and farmland.
01:03It's usually a pretty quiet drive, and honestly, I've always kind of liked it for that reason.
01:08Like a built-in detox where I have time to zone out or think about characters I met at the bar and interesting conversations I may have had with them.
01:15Not long into the drive, I remember thinking to myself how unusually foggy it was.
01:20I have driven those roads more times than I can count, but that night, visibility was worse than I'd seen in a while.
01:28I actually had to ease off the gas and take it slower because I could barely see more than a few car lengths ahead.
01:33Even flipping on my brights didn't help.
01:35It just made the fog glow and reflect back at me, almost like I was driving into a wall of white.
01:40It started pissing me off because I knew it would only add time to my trip, and I was exhausted.
01:46I was about halfway home when I noticed it.
01:49Through the fog, maybe a little off to the right side of the road, there was this faint yellow blinking light.
01:55At first, I figured it was just some kind of roadside marker or maybe a reflector,
01:59but as I kept driving, it didn't really get any closer or farther away.
02:04It just stayed there, blinking at a steady rhythm, like it was moving right along with me,
02:08keeping pace from somewhere deeper in the fog.
02:11The whole thing felt a little off.
02:14I couldn't tell how far away it actually was.
02:16It was like the fog was playing tricks on my depth perception.
02:20After about another minute of driving with that blinking light hovering in the exact same place,
02:25I started getting this weird feeling in my stomach.
02:27I couldn't even explain it to you.
02:30Something about it just didn't sit right with me.
02:33I decided to slow down a bit, thinking maybe if I let off the gas,
02:37the light would keep going and I'd get a better sense of what it actually was,
02:40or it would just continue onward and disappear entirely,
02:43and I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.
02:46But as I eased down to almost a crawl, the light didn't change at all.
02:50It kept blinking at the same steady rhythm, still holding that same distance off to the side,
02:55like whatever it was that somehow matched my speed perfectly.
02:59That's when I really started to get spooked.
03:01I finally came to a full stop, just to see if it would do the same,
03:05and sure enough, it stayed right there, blinking in the exact same spot with the same rhythm.
03:10I sat there for a second, trying to figure out what the hell I was looking at,
03:14and debating whether I should just turn around or keep going.
03:17That's when it changed.
03:19The blinking didn't stop, but the light itself started getting brighter,
03:23like a small flame catching a sudden gust of wind and flaring up.
03:27It wasn't flashing faster, it was burning stronger with each pulse,
03:32like whatever it was had suddenly gotten more active.
03:35That was enough for me.
03:37I wasn't about to sit there and wait for whatever that was to get any closer or weirder.
03:41I reached down to shift into reverse so I could back up and turn around,
03:45but I realized the engine wasn't running.
03:48I swear to God, it was dead silent.
03:50I had no idea how that was even possible.
03:53The only way to kill the engine would have been touching the key,
03:56but I distinctly remembered never doing that.
03:59Why the hell would I do that?
04:01At that point, my hands were shaking, and my hands never shake.
04:04I pour drinks all day, my hands can't shake.
04:08As I was desperately trying to start the car,
04:10I couldn't help but think that this thing outside my car had something to do with my engine,
04:14which, of course, wouldn't start.
04:17I tried the ignition again and again.
04:19The engine was completely dead.
04:22Meanwhile, that blinking yellow light kept burning brighter and brighter and brighter,
04:26almost like it was feeding off something.
04:29My pulse was racing at that point.
04:31I had no idea what the hell was going on, and there was no one around for miles.
04:35Not knowing what else to do, I reached for my phone,
04:38figuring maybe I could at least get some video of it or call for help.
04:42But as soon as I tapped the screen, nothing happened.
04:46Completely black, my phone had died.
04:48I knew for a fact I still had at least 20%.
04:51I had literally checked it back at the bar before I closed up.
04:54But now it was as dead as the engine.
04:57Before I could do anything else, the light suddenly flared to a blinding brightness,
05:01like an exploding star.
05:03I physically couldn't keep my eyes open.
05:06That's how bright it was.
05:07I threw my arms up in front of me and kept my eyes shut for 10 seconds at least,
05:12feeling the blaze of what was now a gigantic light bulb.
05:15And then, just like that, it was gone, like it had never been there in the first place.
05:20The fog was still thick, but there was nothing out there anymore.
05:24My heart was still pounding, but I instinctively reached for the ignition one more time,
05:29and this time, the engine turned over like normal.
05:31I didn't waste another second.
05:34I drove the rest of the way home with my eyes glued to the road,
05:37as if looking away for even a second would bring that awful light back.
05:41But nothing else happened that night.
05:43Nothing ever happened again, actually.
05:46I've told this story to just about everyone I know,
05:48my family, friends, even a couple regulars at the bar,
05:51but no one's had an explanation that sits right with me.
05:55And trust me, I've heard every theory you could think of.
06:01This happened a couple years back.
06:09I'm a long-haul truck driver.
06:11I've been doing this for years now,
06:13so I've gotten pretty used to the long stretches of nothing.
06:16This particular night, I was on my second-to-last delivery of a cross-state loop,
06:21just trying to knock it out so I could get home.
06:24The route had me cutting through one of those desert highways
06:26that barely get any traffic at night.
06:28No towns for miles, no gas stations,
06:30barely even any lights.
06:32Just a two-lane road slicing through open desert under a sky full of stars.
06:37It's the kind of drive where you start to feel like you're the only person left on the planet.
06:42I was about an hour out from my next drop-off when I first noticed it.
06:46I glanced into one of my side mirrors
06:48and was kind of surprised to notice a dark SUV back there, trailing me.
06:53It wasn't riding my bumper or anything aggressive like that,
06:56it was actually keeping a pretty wide distance.
06:58But it was definitely following.
07:01No matter how fast or slow I went, it adjusted to match.
07:04For nearly 40 miles, it just hovered there in my mirrors.
07:08Always visible, always keeping that same strange gap.
07:12It never tried to speed up or pass,
07:13just sat back there like it was waiting for something.
07:17At first, I thought it was a driver who was afraid to pass me.
07:20Maybe they thought it was illegal or dangerous.
07:22But I cast that theory aside after driving through several passing zones.
07:27I guess it was possible they didn't know what a passing zone was,
07:30but I figured that was pretty implausible.
07:33As much as I was dying to know what was going on, I had a job to do.
07:37I couldn't afford to devote the whole night to figuring out what the guy behind me's problem was,
07:41so I tried to ignore him.
07:43As much as I tried, though, I couldn't help but glance at his car every so often.
07:48It was really starting to make me tick, which is something I rarely ever do.
07:54Around 2 a.m., I decided to pull off at a small roadside rest area.
07:59It wasn't a full truck stop or anything like that,
08:01just a dirt lot with a few faded parking spaces and a little shed with a couple of vending machines.
08:07There were also no external lights in the whole lot except for one dim bulb flickering above the vending machines.
08:13I figured I'd stretch my legs for a minute, grab a soda, and more importantly, let whoever was behind me pass.
08:21But when I glanced back before shutting off the engine, I saw that SUV pull in two,
08:26parking way off in the far corner of the lot.
08:29At that point, whatever confusion or discomfort I was feeling became pure rage.
08:33Whoever was driving that SUV was about to get a piece of my mind.
08:37I aggressively stepped down from the cab and started making my way over to the car,
08:42not even trying to disguise my frustration.
08:44But as I was stomping my way over there,
08:46whoever was inside must have realized that I was about to confront them,
08:50because before I could even get close,
08:52the SUV's engines suddenly flared to life and they peeled out of the spot like they were running from the cops,
08:57kicking up a huge cloud of dust and gravel.
08:59As they sped past me, I tried to catch a glimpse of the jagoff who was behind the wheel,
09:05but the windows were tinted and I couldn't make anything out.
09:08I watched as the car got back on the highway, tires still screeching.
09:12Within seconds, it was gone,
09:15just a flicker of red taillights that quickly receded into nothingness.
09:19Part of me was relieved.
09:21I wouldn't have to deal with that nuisance anymore,
09:23and I could finally go about my night in peace.
09:26But another part of me was deeply unsettled.
09:28I had basically confirmed to myself that whoever was driving my car had been following me for some unknown reason.
09:35And what's worse, they clearly didn't want me approaching their vehicle,
09:38so their intentions must have been hostile.
09:41As I was returning from the vending machines,
09:43which coincidentally were completely unstocked,
09:45so that had been a huge waste of time,
09:47I only then realized how tired the whole encounter made me.
09:51My energy was zapped,
09:53and the last thing I wanted to do was get back on the road.
09:55I figured I'd earned at least a short break after all that,
09:59just a quick nap,
10:01an hour or two to recharge before finishing the route in the morning.
10:05I did a quick walk around the rig.
10:07I made sure the cargo doors were still locked and everything was secured tight,
10:10then climbed back into the cab.
10:13I reclined my seat,
10:14cracked the window slightly to let some air in,
10:16and settled in for a bit of rest.
10:18The lot was dead quiet by that point,
10:21and for the first time all night,
10:23I actually started to relax.
10:25My logic was that even if that person did mean me harm,
10:28there's no way they'd turn their vehicle around just to continue harassing me.
10:32Even if they did want to come back,
10:34finding the lot again would be next to impossible.
10:37They'd have to search blindly in the middle of a pitch black desert.
10:39The combination of my exhaustion and newfound comfort made falling asleep really easy.
10:46If I had to guess,
10:47I'd say I fell asleep that night in a matter of minutes.
10:50I should probably mention that I'm a really light sleeper.
10:53Like, really light.
10:55You kind of have to be to be in this line of work.
10:57Sleeping in sketchy roadside places so often builds a third eye, so to speak.
11:02If someone's messing with your rig while you're asleep,
11:04your entire livelihood could be at risk,
11:07not to mention your life.
11:08So yeah, the ability to wake up to even faint sounds
11:11could be the difference between job and no job, life and death.
11:16Maybe an hour after falling asleep,
11:18you guessed it,
11:19I was woken up by the faintest little noise.
11:22A light crunching sound,
11:23like footsteps pressing into the loose gravel.
11:26Even though I was still groggy,
11:28I had enough sense to keep quiet.
11:30I cracked the corner of one of my window blinds to take a look outside.
11:34And sure enough,
11:35there were two figures standing near the rear wheels of my trailer.
11:38They were crouched down low,
11:40inspecting the lower latch mechanisms,
11:42like they were trying to figure out how to open them without making too much noise.
11:46They were keeping pretty quiet,
11:48but I noticed one of them had a small flashlight,
11:50using it to signal back and forth to the other.
11:52I couldn't make out any faces,
11:54but it was clear as day what they were doing.
11:57I didn't have any weapon on me,
11:59I usually don't,
12:00but if it came down to it,
12:01I was fully prepared to defend my rig and load.
12:04That's my life.
12:06As I watched,
12:07one of the guys reached into a small bag
12:09and pulled out what looked like a pair of bolt cutters.
12:12That was it.
12:13Without even thinking,
12:14I slammed my palm down on the horn,
12:16sending the truck's air horn blaring.
12:19Their reaction was instant.
12:21Both men jumped like they'd been hit with a lightning bolt,
12:23and they scrambled back towards the roadside brush.
12:26Not even ten seconds later,
12:28I saw headlights appear out of nowhere.
12:30It was that same SUV from earlier,
12:33this time roaring back into view with its lights still off,
12:36before whipping around and disappearing into the night again.
12:39I never even had time to step out of my cab
12:41before the whole thing was over.
12:43After things calmed down a bit,
12:45I called the police.
12:46Honestly,
12:47I was mostly just calling to report the incident
12:48and get it on record,
12:50but they insisted I stay put
12:51until a unit could get there to check things out.
12:54It took a while,
12:55but eventually,
12:56two officers showed up and helped me inspect the truck.
13:00Sure enough,
13:00there were fresh pry marks
13:02along one of the lower lock arms
13:03on the back of my trailer,
13:05right where those guys had been messing around.
13:07Fortunately,
13:08they hadn't gotten it open.
13:10The officers told me
13:11they'd seen this kind of thing before,
13:13cargo thieves.
13:14Apparently,
13:15it's a lot more common along that corridor
13:17than most people realize.
13:19They figured the SUV had been following me for a while,
13:21waiting for the right time to strike.
13:23This remains the most unsettling thing
13:25that has ever happened to me.
13:27There's nothing better than a night drive,
13:39especially in the summer.
13:40Picture this,
13:41the warm summer breeze
13:43flowing through the open windows
13:44of a speeding car
13:45cutting through empty stretches
13:47of endless highway.
13:48Well,
13:48that's what it's like
13:49around my neck of the woods anyway.
13:50There aren't a lot of cars
13:53out on the highway at night,
13:54no cops either,
13:56so I essentially have free reign
13:57to drive how I please.
13:59And trust me,
14:00I take full advantage of that.
14:02My dad's BMW M3
14:03definitely assists in that regard too.
14:06Don't get me wrong,
14:07I'm not a reckless driver
14:08or someone who operates a car
14:09at criminal speeds,
14:11but I do enjoy experiencing
14:12the full capabilities
14:13of German engineering
14:14from time to time.
14:16This night was one of those times.
14:18I was full-on joyriding,
14:20cruising along the highway
14:21without a care in the world,
14:23stereo turned off
14:24and passenger seat empty.
14:26My ears were focused
14:27not on music,
14:28but on two other things,
14:30the beautiful sounds of my car
14:31and the whip of the air
14:32around my face.
14:34Driving like this
14:35is one of the only things
14:36that makes me feel truly free.
14:38I'm not sure what came over me,
14:39but at one point
14:40I had this insatiable urge
14:42to pull off the highway
14:43and cut up some back roads
14:44where I could really appreciate
14:45the car's handling.
14:47It's like when you get
14:47a really strong urge
14:48to do something
14:49and you don't really know why,
14:51but you do know
14:51that you won't be able
14:52to sleep at night
14:53if you don't satisfy it.
14:54That's exactly what it was like.
14:56So I did exactly that.
14:58I pulled off at the next exit
14:59and started cutting through
15:00a network of back roads,
15:02weaving through
15:03whatever neighborhood
15:03I had landed in.
15:05The roads were narrow
15:06and filled with tight bends,
15:08exactly the kind of driving
15:09I was looking for.
15:10I let the car open up a bit,
15:12taking the turns
15:13with just enough speed
15:14to feel the tires grip
15:15and release.
15:16The streets were
15:17completely deserted,
15:18it was just me,
15:19the car,
15:20and the road.
15:21That is,
15:21until I spotted
15:22a flicker of light
15:23in the road up ahead
15:24and slammed on the brakes
15:25just in time
15:26to barely avoid
15:27smashing into it.
15:28Once I came to a stop,
15:30I finally got a clear look
15:31at what I had almost hit.
15:33It was a shopping cart,
15:34just sitting there
15:35in the middle of the road
15:36like someone had wheeled it out
15:37and left it.
15:38The way my headlights
15:39bounced off the metal bars
15:40must have been
15:41what caught my eye
15:42and made it look
15:43a lot more sudden
15:43and dramatic
15:44than it really was.
15:46Still,
15:46it completely threw me off.
15:48I mean,
15:49it's not exactly normal
15:50to find a random shopping cart
15:52sitting dead center
15:53in the middle of the back road
15:54at close to midnight.
15:56Against my better judgment,
15:57I put the car in park,
15:59turned on my hazards,
16:00and stepped out
16:00to take a closer look.
16:02I probably should have
16:03just kept driving,
16:04but my curiosity
16:05got the better of me.
16:06The whole thing
16:07just felt so random
16:08and out of place
16:09that I had this weird need
16:10to make sense of it.
16:12The night air
16:13hit me right away,
16:14warm but a little buggy,
16:16and the only sound
16:17was my cooling engine
16:18making the classic
16:19BMW ticking sound.
16:21I walked up to the cart,
16:22unsure of what
16:23I'd find inside.
16:25Groceries, maybe?
16:26No,
16:26that was ridiculous.
16:28I internally scolded myself
16:29for letting such a dumb thought
16:31even enter my brain.
16:32I peered inside the cart
16:33and realized
16:34it was completely empty,
16:36just an ordinary
16:37metal shopping cart
16:38sitting in the middle
16:38of the road.
16:40I stood there
16:40for a few seconds,
16:42but when it became clear
16:43there was nothing unusual
16:44about the cart itself,
16:45I turned to head back
16:46toward my car.
16:47That's when I saw
16:48out of the corner of my eye
16:49two dark figures
16:51suddenly broke out
16:51from the farmland
16:52beside the road.
16:53They were sprinting
16:54full speed
16:55coming straight toward me.
16:57It took my brain
16:58a second to even process
16:59what I was seeing,
17:00but in that moment
17:00it was life or death.
17:02My options were
17:03either act or die.
17:05I bolted back to my car
17:06and basically punched
17:07the start button.
17:08The car came to life
17:10as those figures
17:10made it to my car window.
17:12One of them stopped
17:13a few feet from my car,
17:14but the other one
17:15sprinted directly
17:15into my passenger side door,
17:17coming to a halt
17:18with a deafening thump.
17:20He didn't even flinch.
17:21It was as if my car
17:22were invisible.
17:23That's how fast
17:24he had been running.
17:25He didn't even brace himself
17:26for the impact.
17:28The two of us locked eyes,
17:29and all the confidence
17:30I just had
17:31was instantly gone.
17:32I was frozen.
17:33He stared at me
17:35with two beady,
17:36bloodshot eyes.
17:38His clothes were torn,
17:39like he'd been running
17:40through thick brush
17:41or barbed wire,
17:42and his hair was messy
17:43and wet.
17:44His face was smeared
17:45with something dark,
17:46dirt or blood
17:47or maybe both.
17:49He had this unsettling,
17:50vacant expression
17:51on his face
17:52that wasn't exactly
17:53a scowl,
17:54but wasn't exactly
17:54a smile either.
17:56I've never been more terrified
17:57in my entire life.
17:59It was bad.
18:00There was blood spurting
18:01from somewhere on his body,
18:03but he didn't seem to care
18:04or even notice.
18:05He must have realized
18:06I wasn't going anywhere,
18:08because he started fumbling
18:09with the door handle,
18:10trying to pry the door open.
18:12That's what did it for me.
18:14I snapped back to reality,
18:15maneuvered the car
18:16around the shopping cart,
18:17and sped out of there.
18:19I was beyond conflicted
18:20the whole drive home.
18:22Not only was I still shaken up
18:23and scared,
18:24but part of me also felt
18:25like that person needed help
18:26for his wounds
18:27and wasn't going to get it.
18:28I debated going back
18:29to see if he needed help,
18:31but ultimately decided
18:32against it.
18:33Instead,
18:34I reported the incident
18:35to the police
18:35while still driving,
18:37and they said they'd send
18:38someone over to the spot
18:38I described to check it out.
18:40When I finally made it
18:42back home,
18:43I parked in the driveway
18:43and got out
18:44to inspect the car.
18:46I needed to know
18:47how bad the damage was.
18:49That's when I noticed
18:49there was blood
18:50spattered across
18:51the entire passenger side door,
18:53way more than I had expected.
18:55It was streaked
18:56along the side mirror,
18:57smeared across the handle,
18:58even dotting
18:59part of the rear quarter panel.
19:02There was also
19:02a slight dent
19:03near the center of the door,
19:04just barely noticeable
19:05if you weren't looking for it.
19:07The amount of blood,
19:08though,
19:08that's what really got to me.
19:10It was far more
19:11than I would have thought
19:12from that brief impact.
19:14It was an inhuman
19:15amount of blood.
19:17The next morning,
19:18my dad took one look
19:19at the car
19:19and completely lost it.
19:21He didn't even give me
19:22a chance to explain
19:23before he started going off,
19:25yelling about
19:25how irresponsible I was,
19:27how I should have never
19:27taken the car out that late,
19:29and how much it was going to cost
19:30to fix the paint and the dent.
19:32I kept trying to tell him
19:33that it wasn't my fault,
19:34that something happened out there
19:35that I couldn't have
19:36possibly predicted,
19:37but he wasn't having it.
19:39To him,
19:40all he saw was his car
19:41covered in blood
19:42with a dented door,
19:43and that was enough.
19:45I may have hit a deer
19:45for all he cared.
19:47He eventually did come around
19:48to what had happened,
19:49and he was actually
19:50pretty sympathetic,
19:51but not until after
19:52I got the car cleaned up.
19:53And let's just say
19:54that that was one of the last times
19:55he let me go joyriding
19:57after dark.
19:58I'm pretty sure
19:59I can explain everything
19:59that happened.
20:01Those people,
20:02probably homeless,
20:03had tried to lure
20:04some unsuspecting soul
20:05out of their car
20:05with a shopping cart.
20:07I had been that
20:08unsuspecting soul
20:09that night,
20:10they just hadn't been fast
20:11or stealthy enough
20:12to get the jump on me
20:12before I could get out of there.
20:14I never heard back
20:15from the police,
20:16but I wasn't really
20:17expecting to.
20:18Part of me feels like
20:19I shouldn't care,
20:20but I really hate thinking
20:21an impact with my car
20:22might have ended
20:23someone's life that night.
20:25I don't know what I'm talking about.
20:26I don't know what I'm talking about.
