One of the toughest categories for Country Music's Biggest Night has already been settled, with Stephen Wilson Jr. announced as an early winner for the 'New Artist of the Year' at the 59th Annual CMA Awards. But before the call was made, fellow nominee Tucker Wetmore told Katie Neal backstage how impressive this year's category was.

00:00We're backstage at the CMA Awards with first-time nominee Tucker Wetmore up for
00:06New Artist of the Year. How are you feeling going into the show? Nervous. A little nervous,
00:10but excited. We were at Whiskey Jam last night and I think Ward Gunther's at a best use like
00:14this might be the most stacked new artist category I feel like we have ever seen. I
00:18think it is. I was just looking at the list yesterday actually and it's Ella, Zach, me,
00:25Shabuzi, Stephen Wilson, you know, and it's all over the place too. It's all country,
00:30but it's different kinds and different aspects of country and it's just it's so
00:34amazing to be a part of it. There's so much time. Whoever wins it is more than, honestly,
00:40more than deserving. Exactly, and you're gonna have a big moment in the show. You are
00:43performing. I am. What are you performing? I am Wind Up Missing You. Okay. Did you forget?
00:48It's been a long day. Which song? Okay, great. Wind Up Missing You. That's gonna be a fun
00:53moment for sure. If you're up there, like who do you not want to make eye contact
00:56with? Because it's actually all your friends and peers that are right there in
00:59the audience. Like who would make you giggle if you made eye contact with them?
01:02Gavin Adcock. Oh my god, yeah. No, you can't look at Gavin. He'll be doing something so stupid.
01:06I just saw him right on the corner. Yeah, good buddy of mine, Bailey as well. Another good
01:11buddy of mine. So if I look at, I'm probably gonna crack a smile. I'm hoping not to look at
01:17Chris Sableton or Cody Johnson. No, you can't look at either of them. Because I'll probably
01:20just freak out inside, you know. Forget the lyrics. Yeah, exactly. Just don't look at
01:24anyone the whole time. Eyes closed. Are you doing this? Is this like full band
01:27performance? Are you doing something on the piano? No, it's full band. Okay, got it. So it's
01:30gonna be super kind of just down the middle. Yeah. You know, it's my first, it's my
01:36first time doing like a big performance like this on a, on a award show. So it's, what we
01:42want to do is just, it's me and my band guys and you know, some lights in the back.
01:46Nothing crazy. You know, there's no pyro. Yep. We're just nothing. No fireworks. Okay.
01:51It's gonna be super simple and super full. I love this. What are you wearing on the red
01:54carpet? Clothes. Clothes. Yeah, you have no idea. Someone's gonna hand you something
01:58tomorrow and you're gonna walk out the door and wear it. No, it's kind of cool. I turned
02:00on today. It's a, it's like a black and blue type thing and my chest is showing, obviously.
02:08Obviously. Is there a limit? Because I was, last night we were at Whiskey Jam, I was like,
02:12you started with like a vest and your shirt was buttoned and then I looked down a while
02:14later and I was like, how many more, like, is there a limit to the buttons or does the
02:17limit not exist? You run out. I mean, you run out of buttons, but like, do you, did they're
02:21just all open then? Uh, yeah. Uh, I mean, I don't do it. You don't? I don't go all the
02:27way. No? You never, you never. So there is a button that you like know to stop at. Just
02:32you feel it out. You know, I don't really know how to answer that question. Just give me a
02:37shit. Oh my gosh. All right. Three, two, one is top 10 this week, which is also huge.
02:42Yep. You gotta be like freaking out. Like what a fun, this is a great time. I feel
02:45like everything correct is happening. Everything good that could happen is
02:49happening. And, um, I'm just, um, I'm sitting back and just enjoying it all.
02:54As you should. All right. Tucker Whitmore backstage at the CMAs.
