00:00Previously the knitters tackled their second solo challenge to make iconic
00:07outfits for pets. I'm winging it. David Bowie's wig. Before going back in time to
00:14create dramatic 80s jumpers in the team knit. Oh good grief. We did it. Holger was
00:23best in show. For me Holger nailed it. Earning him the big knitter of the week
00:28badge. Stephanie found herself in the danger zone. It's just a bit messier than
00:34the rest. But ultimately Meadow was cast off. I've loved every minute of it. Leaving
00:42eight knitters remaining. Now. It's week three and for our eight remaining knitters
00:50they're gonna try and get away from it all because it's holiday week. I hope
00:54they're ready. Because I am. Welcome to Game of Wolf.
01:06Welcome back knitters. I mean I feel like there's relaxation in the air. Which is
01:11good because it's holiday week. First up is your solo knit. So for this week for
01:17your individual challenge. We would like you to make some amazing swimwear. So we'd like
01:25a striking and glamorous design.
01:29You can knit or crochet. Or a bit of both. And these are going to be close fitting garments. So fit and
01:38fastenings are going to be not just important. They're going to be critical. So good luck.
01:44Indeed. I think fit is definitely the word that stands out there. Because I have some of my Team GB
01:53diving friends who are going to be coming along to try on your swimwear. Wow. Yes. So I don't want to see
02:01any more of them than is completely necessary. You have 12 hours to complete this challenge. So let's
02:08dive in there like swimwear. Let's get knitting. This week's solo challenge is about making a splash
02:18with small perfectly fitting design. So are you making like shorts? Yeah. Short shorts. Working to
02:25the exact measurements of Team GB the knitters must design swimsuits with Olympic precision fit
02:32alongside gold medal style glam. I'm hoping that the frills will sort of
02:38add a little bit of modesty. The knitters may choose to create their swimwear using knit or
02:46crochet. They can design a one-piece, bikini or trunks tailor-made to fit their model. Crocheters
02:52will work in panels, manipulating basic granny squares and or varying stitch size to create shapes
02:58that contour the body. Knitters will work in the round, decreasing and increasing the number of stitches
03:04to create a form-fitting shape. Once the base garment is complete, knitters can bring the glam with
03:10embellishments such as tassels, fringing or motifs. Finally, any knitters creating trunks must create an
03:16accompanying accessory such as a bag, a belt or even a vest. So swimwear, this is a tough knit.
03:26Absolutely. There's so many directions that they can go with this design. What are you hoping for in
03:34terms of design concept? It's got to be innovative. It's got to be fun, light. Di's all about glam this
03:41week, aren't you? I'm all about glam. Yes. We want them to get the shaping right and fit is going to be
03:47huge. It's getting to that point in the competition now where we are really nitpicking, right? Really
03:52putting, putting them to the test.
03:59Inspired by their favourite holiday destinations, this challenge is all about posing poolside in style.
04:07Do you hate it when you lose the top of your trebles? Yeah. Dipti is kicking off the challenge
04:12with crochet and working up the body of her bikini using the granny square. A classic crochet motif
04:19which creates a lacy appearance and currently enjoying a retro comeback. It is simple but you
04:27don't have to make squares so I'm going to make triangles and I'm going to make the iconic triangle
04:32halter neck bikini with it. Dipti's bikini incorporates granny triangles, crocheted using black and
04:39gold metallic yarn for a glam colour scheme inspired by a trip to Las Vegas with her choir.
04:46I'm a member of a choir called the Lay City Chorus. We're a competitive chorus. It's always about
04:54striving to be better and I'm taking that practice into this competition as well.
05:01Were you just talking about Vegas? Yeah, where we sung is where they hold boxing matches.
05:05All right. Yeah, it's mahoosive. So does that mean you're now officially a Vegas showgirl?
05:12No, no, no.
05:17Also taking a granny square to the next level is Holger. But rather than a triangle, Holger is using
05:23the granny stitch as a building block to create his trunks with the usual precision we've come to
05:28expect of him. The shape I'm creating here, there has been a hell of a lot of work, which involves
05:35some complicated calculating. Inspired by Dea, a coastal village of Mallorca, Holger is shaping
05:42granny squares around the legs to create tight-fitting trunks. His shorts will be paired with a loose
05:48fitting mesh top to bring the glam to the granny square. It's more of a posing trunk, isn't it? Let's
05:53face it. Nobody wants to go into the water with that. Lydia. Hi Tom. How's it going? It is going.
06:02Women's bodies, there's just so much to it to get it to fit properly. Inspired by an Australian holiday,
06:11Lydia is attempting to knit an entire swimsuit. Her complex pattern requires shaping around the top
06:18and bottom and an intricate lace panel inserted through the centre to cinch the garment in and
06:23reflect the curves of the female body. Struth! Are you planning to make it like a tube all the way
06:30up or are you kind of going to go a bit skimpier to save on time? There's loads of shaping here so
06:36that this bit was always the narrowest bit anyway, so the top part you've got shaping where it increases,
06:42but the sand bit is the skimpiest bit because I want it to look dramatic. Well, it's not like you're
06:47designing very basic stuff. This has got like so many stitches that you've got all kinds of
06:52different textures going on there. This competition is the first time I've been designing things and
06:56I just thought, wow, it's really gone from zero to 100. Well, that's right. I mean, it looks like
07:00it's coming together really nicely. Thank you so much. Can't wait to see it finished. Thank you.
07:08While the knitters work their way through the bodies of their cozies,
07:12the judges will be expecting a close fit through clever shaping or via fastenings to the body.
07:18Can't believe I'm sat here agonising over the length of an Olympian's crotch.
07:29Elsa. Hello. What have we got going on here? The inspiration behind this was a trip to Venice
07:35with my friend Kate. What are these going to be? That is going to form the top in the sort of
07:40harlequin design. Wow. So alternate the colours and lay them out.
07:45Elsa is also making a full swimsuit like Lydia, but instead of knitting, she plans to crochet 21
07:52diamonds, which will then be stitched together to create a swimsuit fitted to the body.
07:57It was quite a challenge to get it to curve round the chest properly. So I've got these two triangles,
08:05which will join here to create a bit of a curve.
08:08OK. Who is your competition this week, do you think?
08:12Well, just seeing what Lydia's up to.
08:13It's at the speed of light.
08:16With our lace, it's looking good.
08:18Also taking inspiration from a recent trip, but a more magical themed one, is Simon.
08:26And despite last week's failed crochet attempt, this week, he's at it again.
08:31It's a pair of shorts. It's inspired by Disneyland Paris and the colours of the castle. We just love
08:37going there. Here's a... Here's a... Yeah.
08:41Rookie crocheter Simon is boldly using freeform crochet to create his golden board shorts,
08:47with insect granny circles on the back to reflect those iconic mouse ears.
08:52Inspired by his time in the Marines and current career as a builder,
08:56he's planning to accessorize his swimwear with a utility belt for all those holiday essentials,
09:03also decorated with granny circles.
09:08I'm gonna kind of try and just stitch them together, like, just make it up as I go along.
09:13I don't crochet, but I feel that you can adjust it more quickly.
09:22Stephanie, it seems like you've been on a lot of really cool holidays.
09:26Yes. I've been very, very fortunate. I got married in the Seychelles.
09:30That's crazy.
09:31Yeah. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't last, but c'est la vie, the memories are brilliant.
09:37Stephanie is bravely ditching her knitting needles to give crochet a go,
09:42with her tropical island bikini. She plans to embellish with surface crochet to add a beachy
09:47design complete with the sun, sea, and even a palm tree.
09:51I see you're crocheting.
09:54Yes. I'm not a crochet person. That's not my thing. But I decided to take a gamble.
10:00And I've got two bust cups almost completed. Lovely.
10:05What I have learnt is that I can use a paper pattern. And so this is my lower garment that will fold up
10:14into... Okay.
10:16So that's my template for when I come to do this part.
10:20Seems like quite a big risk to take on crochet.
10:23Well, I decided that it was time for me to show some diversity. I'm going for it.
10:32By this stage in the challenge, the judges will be looking for knitters to be working up a perfect fit.
10:37Hi, Tracy. Hiya. How are you doing, Tracy?
10:40So the design for this, I wanted it to have something that was quite blocked in the middle,
10:43so that we don't have any nipple exposure.
10:47You've made a longer stitch, and then for this section, you've just nicely shortened it.
10:52Yes.
10:53Creates shape, isn't it?
10:54Yes, to create a shape.
10:55Yeah, to create a shape.
10:56Channeling memories of Isle of White holidays, Tracy is adjusting her stitch size to sculpt the cup shape
11:03for her white and gold crochet bikini. She's planning an opulent display of pink and purple fuchsias
11:10to complete the look. What are you going to do next? My idea was to do fuchsias and the flowers are
11:15going to hang. Hopefully the booby bit won't. Fuchsias are really glamorous. Lots of petals and
11:24need to make good choices about how you're going to do that. Yeah. I would say. Fingers crossed I make
11:30the best ones then. Oh my gosh. Yeah, it's fine. We don't need to talk about it. While Tracy is
11:39using crochet flowers to bring the glam, Isaac is planning to embellish his trunks with glamorous
11:45lettering. I don't really have a lot of experience with, like, glamour. But yeah, I am doing some
11:50sparkly letters on the bar that say NRG for New River Gorge. Isaac is knitting board shorts with a
11:57rock climbing design on the front and sparkly letters on the back inspired by a trip to the
12:02New River Gorge in West Virginia. His accessory is a crochet chalk bag to complete the rock climbing
12:09theme. So obviously because I'm doing just the swim shorts I have to have an additional item
12:16and the accessory I've chosen to make is a chalk bag which you would use for rock climbing. You
12:20could put your phone in it, you could put your keys in it, it's great for hanging by the pool.
12:24Dian's going to love it.
12:25Dian's going to love it. Dian's going to love it. Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge,
12:34you have six hours remaining. Oh God, I'm definitely behind. At the halfway point,
12:42knitters should be well into the body of their garments and starting to add their glamorous details.
12:48The pants, they're not quite going according to plan. I think my shaping isn't quite right.
12:55I thought that was going to be the front, but I think it might have to be the back.
13:03I've got to say I'm worried about this challenge. I am worried.
13:06It's week three in the yarn barn and the knitters are over halfway through their solo challenge to
13:20create glamorous swimwear modelled by Team GB. Measurement wise, guys are exactly the same size as me.
13:28So obviously if the fit is bad, I don't have any excuse. Maybe we should cut that bit out.
13:33Hi, Lydia. Hi. Lydia is halfway through her complicated lace panel,
13:40which she hopes will create the perfect fit for her swimsuit.
13:44Once you start introducing a lace section to swimwear, it becomes much sexier and more glamorous.
13:54Amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing it and the shaping as it progresses.
13:59Fit is everything. Yeah, it is critical. Keep going. Keep going.
14:02You've achieved a huge amount there. Thank you.
14:05I just really wanted to make something that would make you and Sheila proud with how it fits.
14:09And sorry, I feel quite emotional. Sorry, I'm going to go red.
14:15Oh, I bet nobody else gets like this over knitting.
14:18It just makes me feel incredibly emotional.
14:26So I'm crying, but I'm actually really happy.
14:29Cures of joy.
14:31It's going to pull it off. No pressure.
14:33No pressure.
14:45Simon has now completed his trunks and is using a unique method to ensure a successful fit,
14:50lacing.
14:52Oh, the boss is in.
14:53How are you doing with this?
14:55So I'm just trying to pick up a waistband and then I was going to either do like a,
15:01like a lace-up side to make it a bit sexier.
15:05Oh, okay.
15:06They're pretty risque, so I hope your friend is around.
15:08Oh, we're athletes, we don't mind.
15:10We don't see our bodies as anything other than a vessel to perform, to be honest.
15:15So, you know.
15:19And you can see the really sparkly, glam look.
15:23I just hope it fits her.
15:24In the final hours of the challenge, knitters should be adding embellishments
15:28and creating any accessories.
15:30But novice crocheter Stephanie is yet to add any of her tropical details.
15:35The plan is to have a palm tree.
15:37Yes. I want it 3D.
15:38Nice surface 3D.
15:40Yeah.
15:40Absolutely.
15:41So, we will look forward to seeing what else you can add to your basic pieces.
15:47I'm interested to see what I'm going to add as well.
15:49You'd like to see it too, Stephanie.
15:51While Stephanie races to complete her embellishments,
15:55Tracy has managed to complete her fuchsias, but with less flower power than she had hoped.
16:00So, Tracy, how's it going?
16:01Panicked.
16:02Panicked?
16:03Yeah, very.
16:03What are you panicking about?
16:04This is the bottom.
16:06Okay.
16:06So, we might be exposing your friend's bottom.
16:09Have you got the flower covered?
16:12Yeah, I've got a flower covered.
16:15Might end up being a one-shoulder affair at this, right?
16:20Knitters, you have one hour remaining.
16:23I mean, at this point, what am I doing?
16:28In the remaining hour, any knitters presenting trunks to the judges must now complete the coordinated accessory to match.
16:37Holger is crocheting a string vest.
16:39Very, very, very open mesh, so very little substance.
16:42But once the top is done, I can work from here downwards.
16:45It's kind of a little bit sexy having a bit of a crop, though.
16:48Yeah.
16:49Not for you?
16:50Well, not for me personally, definitely.
16:52Well, you know, you never know.
16:53With Isaac's shorts taking longer than he had anticipated, he is now rushing to crochet up a chalk bag.
17:01Now, I'm making a loose representation of a chalk bag.
17:05And Simon's accessory utility belt is also far less refined than he had intended.
17:11Holger, there's no glamour in this one.
17:14My utility belt.
17:17I mean, it goes amazing with my sheep badge.
17:2030 minutes to go. Let's check in on them, shall we?
17:22Stephanie, how's it going?
17:24The palm tree is proving more difficult than I thought.
17:26I'm trying to attach the leaves to make it look like a palm tree than the black stripe.
17:31Elsa, where are you at right now?
17:32Just putting the last of the diamonds together.
17:35In the final moments, knitters have one last chance to add any last-minute details.
17:41Tracy, how's it going?
17:42It feels very glam.
17:43Dipsy.
17:44You know?
17:46Don't take that on TV.
17:48Not much time to go.
17:49Yes.
17:50Go, go, go, go.
17:52No urgency here.
17:53It's coming, it's coming, it's coming.
17:55And I've just lost my needle.
17:57That stretch of me gets a bit longer.
18:00That's all I can do.
18:01Haven't got time.
18:02Knitters, time is up.
18:06That's 12 hours done.
18:08It's now time for Team GB to try on your swimwear.
18:13Let's hope it fits.
18:16Knitters were asked to produce glamorous, form-fitting swimwear.
18:2012 hours later, it's time for eight beach-ready looks to be judged.
18:25It's been a massive risk.
18:26I've just got to trust the judges.
18:28It'll take into account just how much I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
18:33I'm not a glamorous person.
18:34I don't do glamour.
18:35So to have that is completely out of my wheelhouse.
18:40Diving into our swimwear today are Team GB superstars with three Olympic medals between them.
18:45Noah Williams, Yasmin Harper and Jordan Holden.
18:50Well done, knitters.
18:53That's eight glamorous swimsuits made.
18:56And now it's time for my fellow Team GB Olympians to try them on and find out who will sink and who will swim.
19:03First up, we have Lydia.
19:11Sporting Lydia's swimsuit is Olympic bronze medalist Yasmin Harper.
19:15I love this piece.
19:21I think the word might be chic.
19:25It has a glamour because you've brought the lace panel in.
19:29I think what makes it fit well, the shaping, which is a feat of engineering.
19:36I'm proud that I've got it out and it fits.
19:40You should be proud because the fit is lovely.
19:43Thank you, Lydia.
19:44Thank you, Lydia.
19:45Next up, we have Dipti.
19:52Wow, that's amazing.
19:53The glamour of Las Vegas really shines through.
19:57The stitch work is lovely.
19:58The shaping is very elegant.
20:00Is it comfortable to wear?
20:04Would you like to tell me?
20:05Would I wear it without pants on underneath?
20:08Probably not.
20:09No.
20:10Yes.
20:13It's a little revealing, isn't it?
20:14It is.
20:15I mean...
20:16Yeah.
20:17Yeah.
20:22Up next is Elsa.
20:28I really love the way it's all joined together.
20:32A couple of different shapes.
20:34There to fit the body.
20:36I'm unsure about here.
20:38You've got your cut threads here.
20:39Mm-hmm.
20:40And you can see them.
20:41But there's a lot of really fine crochet work.
20:45Yes.
20:45Which is absolutely excellent.
20:48Thank you very much, Elsa.
20:51Next up, we have Isaac.
20:57Modelling Isaac's shorts is double Olympic medallist
21:00and my diving partner, Noah Williams.
21:04Would you mind turning round so we can see in the back?
21:11Would you turn this for us?
21:12For me, it's not quite glam enough.
21:16Yeah, that's fair.
21:16It's difficult with a subject, which is rock climbing.
21:21Yeah, to make it glam.
21:22Kind of add a lot of glam into it.
21:25So, the bag, you were aiming for a different palette.
21:31Yeah.
21:32I did want it to be sort of like a bright accompaniment,
21:35because I know that the colours to the shorts themselves
21:37are relatively dull.
21:38I think it just needed to be a little bit more wow.
21:41Thank you, Isaac.
21:42Thanks, Noah.
21:42No, thank you.
21:47Next up is Stephanie.
21:48I can't help feeling that the bottom half
22:00is just a little on the skimpy side.
22:03OK.
22:04It's not quite as glamour as I would have imagined.
22:09Not all of the detailing works.
22:11Some of it is on the simple side.
22:14I'm not sure about the palm tree.
22:16OK.
22:17Even some palm fronds coming over would have been more exotic.
22:22Yes.
22:23Yeah.
22:26Thank you, Stephanie.
22:26OK, Tracy, you're up next.
22:37Are we ready?
22:38Up we go.
22:39Help you through.
22:40There you go.
22:41Hi, Tracy.
22:41Hiya.
22:44So, in terms of fit, the top works really well.
22:49Yeah, I'm not sure the flowers have worked.
22:51Fuchsias are really opulent with lots of petals and gorgeousness.
22:56Yeah.
22:57And then they don't quite make it for me as a fuchsia.
23:02Thank you so much.
23:06Next up is Holger.
23:14I would not have thought a string vest and a granny squares pair of trunks
23:20could be sexy and glamorous, but they are.
23:23You've manipulated them to create shape and form.
23:28It's really sculptural.
23:30It's a really good fit.
23:31Really well done.
23:33Thank you, Holden.
23:36And next up is Simon.
23:37The Olympian in Simon's shorts is Jordan Holden.
23:57So, ah, the lacing is interesting.
24:02Do you really like it?
24:04I didn't say I liked it.
24:05Oh, right, OK.
24:07So, obviously, I wanted it to be a bit more, like, chic.
24:12It's ended up with some sort of bunched up bits.
24:16Yeah.
24:17The fit is compromised.
24:27My biggest takeaway from this challenge is I'm really not a crocheter.
24:32I'm just going to shut the door on this one, move on, let's not worry about it, and move on and do my best.
24:39With eight swimsuits now packed away for the holidays, the knitters have one more chance to prove themselves and avoid the cast off.
24:55And for this team challenge, they'll want a seat.
24:59This week for our team challenge, Di and Sheila would love for you to work in pairs to crochet a deck chair.
25:10Wow.
25:11What?
25:11What?
25:12Yeah.
25:13A deck chair, cornerstone of British seaside summer.
25:18And because this is our first only crochet challenge, we have enlisted some help from an amazing crochet judge.
25:30Her designs have been worn by Justin Bieber, and she's an expert in high-end contemporary floral design.
25:37Please welcome Janie Crowe.
25:39Hi guys, I really feel that crochet has the potential to be an amazing platform for creativity, amazing colour palettes, and I just can't wait to see what you all come up with.
25:58Good luck.
26:00This week, we would like you, in your pairs, to crochet a traditional deck chair sling.
26:08We would love to see a striking holiday design.
26:13Practical, functional, and above all, securely fitted, because while we won't be having a wee seat, our friend Tom here will.
26:25Yes, I don't want to fall through.
26:27As always, the team challenge is judged blind, so I am now going to ask Di, Sheila and Janie to leave the yarn bar.
26:37Good luck.
26:37Good luck.
26:37Now, for your teams, you're going to be working in pairs, so in team one, we have Holger and Isaac.
26:47In team two, we have Lydia and Tracy.
26:52Yeah.
26:53In team three, we have Stephanie and Dipty.
26:59And in team four, we have Elsa and Simon.
27:04For this challenge, you are going to have eight hours.
27:07Let's get hooking.
27:18Each of the teams have been given a simple deck chair frame to create a holiday-inspired design.
27:23It's always the internal question, how do those things fold and unfold?
27:26Once they have crocheted together their seaside sling, they must attach it to the frame successfully.
27:32Do you think squares are varying sizes and then putting them together?
27:36I think so.
27:36Teams have a choice of three cotton yarns for the sling, a thick cord yarn, a fine recycled yarn and a soft tape yarn.
27:46Let's make sure we a-deck the competition.
27:48A-deck them all.
27:52A deck chair.
27:53Well, Tom, can I just say deck chairs are iconic.
27:57Yeah, well, that's fair enough.
27:59Absolutely.
27:59I mean, are there stitches that work better for a deck chair?
28:03Probably the densest crochet stitch is a double.
28:06It's the sturdiest crochet stitch, but the one I'm concerned they might use is a treble.
28:12So it's the same process through the stitch, but this time I've got three loops on my hook instead of two.
28:18So then it's through two.
28:21Oh, and through the final two.
28:24And that then gives you this gap, you see, the risky gap.
28:29Yeah.
28:29Then it's going to be really stretchy.
28:31And stretchy can be a disaster when it comes to sitting down in a deck chair.
28:35Yeah, yeah.
28:36Needs to be firm.
28:37I feel like a granny square is very much a classic in the crochet world.
28:41Do you think that's a good idea to do within a deck chair?
28:44The granny square has its place, but I'm hoping that they push it a little bit out.
28:49Yes.
28:50I want something different.
28:51One of us starts from the top.
28:55One of us starts from the bottom.
28:56Teams must select a yarn and a stitch that are up for the job.
29:00Too stretchy and I could end up bottomed out.
29:03That's the technical diving term for hitting the floor.
29:05That's the yarn that we liked.
29:07The thicker one, which will grow quicker.
29:09Yeah, that will be all right on there, I think.
29:11Simon and Ailsa are first to select the thick cord yarn.
29:16First thing I can think of is the little beach huts.
29:19Yes.
29:20We could do a textured sort of stitch here for the sand.
29:25For their deck chair, Simon and Ailsa have come up with a classic beach hut design.
29:31Using the dense shell and double crochet stitches for the base, with seaside motifs stitched on as extra details.
29:39Stephanie and Dipty have also opted for the thickest yarn.
29:43We could do a cocktail.
29:45Something like this.
29:47And we could have an umbrella in it.
29:49How's that?
29:49Yeah.
29:51Stephanie and Dipty have concocted a Cocktails on the Beach design.
29:55They will connect cord yarn granny squares for the sling before adding their crochet cocktail motif.
30:03This is actually lovely.
30:04Is it?
30:04Yeah, I like it.
30:05I really like the feel of it.
30:07Tracey and Lydia have gone for the soft and stretchy tape yarn.
30:12What stitch is going to provide the best security for the base of it?
30:16I think we'd do something plain.
30:18So keep that fairly basic and then flower the whole thing.
30:21It should transport you to the Hawaiian beach.
30:23It's going to be all about the embellishments.
30:27Their Hawaiian beach theme incorporates a stripy sling embellished with an abundance of tropical flowers.
30:35The amount of effort that you're putting into working with this, we could make something faster with the...
30:39Slimmer one?
30:39Yeah.
30:40Yeah.
30:40Yeah.
30:41Holger and Isaac are the only team to choose the fine cotton yarn.
30:45I mean, it could be something as simple as those cones that are bound from newspaper with the chips in.
30:50Yeah.
30:51I think what we could do is make the background the classic stripes.
30:55A cone of chips is on the menu for the boys.
30:58They will be using Intarsia to crochet their chip design into their sling while using the thinnest yarn.
31:05This means a total of 6,000 stitches will be needed to complete this intricate design.
31:11We're planning on splitting the whole thing essentially down the middle.
31:15It's easier to split it this way because then...
31:17And then you can hide the join in.
31:18The join in the motif will have to be done carefully, but the join in the stripe will be hidden.
31:23We're going to have an uphill struggle to beat the crochet queens over there, but as long as you don't come last.
31:28Two hours into the challenge and the base of the deck chair slings are taking shape.
31:38It's really like fighting, isn't it?
31:40It is. Working with this yarn.
31:41Yeah.
31:42Dipty, Stephanie, how are we doing?
31:45Coming. Do you fancy a cocktail?
31:47I would love a cocktail. What have you got on offer?
31:49Erm, Granny's on the Beach.
31:50Granny's on the Beach.
31:52That's a good one. How's it going?
31:55So this is going to be the sling of our cover.
31:58It is growing very quickly to see it come together and especially with the Granny Square,
32:02they just grow in all directions for every round.
32:04It gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
32:06I feel reasonably confident. Do you think so?
32:08I think we've got a plan and we know what we're doing.
32:12It's looking good. You're quick.
32:14Ailsa and Simon are the only team doubling the length of the sling to fold it over.
32:20All other teams plan to just attach one panel to the frame.
32:23Ailsa and Simon. Hello.
32:26We've got the main sling finished.
32:29But we're just going to adjust that slightly because what we're going to do is we're going to
32:32extend it all the way round and turn it into a tube. So when it sits on a deck chair,
32:36you've got two layers of fabric and that will really feel supportive.
32:43Hookers!
32:44You are halfway through this challenge. That is four hours until you need your deck chair ready.
32:51I'm off on holiday.
32:55Oh no!
32:57In the remaining four hours, knitters must join together their slings with enough strength
33:03to pass the sit test. That's holding.
33:05And also add any final embellishments.
33:07I'm doing a cocktail glass and then the umbrella that goes in the top of it.
33:13I'm doing some free form crochet flowers.
33:15I've started to add a bit of detail to these. That's just a wee anchor.
33:21But having chosen the finest yarn...
33:23It's taking so long.
33:24..Holga and Isaac are beginning to fall behind.
33:28You're planning on doing the whole deck chair in this thin yarn?
33:31Um...
33:32All going according to plan, entirely?
33:34That was the original plan.
33:35Sure.
33:36Probably not.
33:37Probably not.
33:37The motif will be done and then it will be finished off in whatever gets it finished.
33:44Well, I'm going to leave you both to it. You seem very focused and very, you know...
33:48Stressed?
33:49Just doing what you're looking for?
33:50I wouldn't say stress. How can you be stressed when you're crocheting and knitting?
33:53That's what you do to relieve stress, right?
33:55Have you been here for the last two weeks?
33:57Mm-hmm.
33:58Well, I'll leave you to it.
33:59Bye, Tom.
34:01Bye.
34:03I mean, Holga and Isaac have taken a huge risk with going with a thin yarn,
34:08because although they can work slightly quicker with it, it grows so slowly.
34:14So they are probably the team that's worrying me the most at the moment.
34:18We're going to sew together, the two strips, as soon as they have a length that we can work with.
34:24While Holga and Isaac struggle to join their complicated design together...
34:31What do I do? Just give it a go?
34:32..it's the moment of truth for Dipti and Stephanie.
34:35I'm in, but I'm sinking.
34:43Right.
34:45It's got a lot more give to it than we were totally expecting at all.
34:50I don't know what to do.
34:51I think we'll undo the beach end and cut.
35:04Nine.
35:05The knitters are in the final stages of crocheting a true British design classic,
35:21the deck chair.
35:22I put it on back to front.
35:24Holga and Isaac have made a last-minute stitch swap to the dangerous treble crochet
35:29to get their sling finally completed.
35:32You know, it's going to be a weak spot in the fabric of the deck chair,
35:35but it gives more substance quicker, doesn't it?
35:37But Stephanie and Dipti need to fix their oversized sling
35:42before they can even fit it to the frame.
35:44Get rid of that one.
35:46Do it, Stephanie, because I can't...
35:48Yes?
35:49Yeah, do it.
35:50It breaks my heart to cut it, but I appreciate it breaks your heart, Angel.
36:00Knitters, you have one hour until I am going to be sitting on your deck chairs.
36:06The method I'm using is what's commonly known as pure and utter desperation.
36:12In the last hour, knitters must attach their sling securely to the frame.
36:17We're chaining the bottom up to the top, touching it straight to the wood,
36:21and then we can do the same with the sides.
36:24There'll be no sit test because I want to sit in it.
36:27No, I'm not sitting in this and potentially break it.
36:31Oh, yeah!
36:32Can someone grab me a pina clara, please?
36:35Oh, look at the flowers coming together!
36:38The black outline on Stephanie's stem and the wine glass make it pot from the surface.
36:44This whole thing's going to look great. I know it is.
36:47What about that?
36:47Yeah.
36:48Yeah.
36:48We ice cream for Tom.
36:51Lovely.
36:51There's ends!
36:52We come!
36:54Hookers, hooks down. Your time is up.
36:58The holiday, is it just beginning? Or is the holiday very much over?
37:04Look at that!
37:06That's cute.
37:07Yeah, all ye doubters.
37:10Yeah, it looks very stretchy, guys.
37:15I think that looks really nice, actually.
37:17Yeah.
37:18Yeah.
37:18I think we've done a marvellous job.
37:21Well done.
37:24In just eight hours, that's four classic crochet deck chairs complete. Holiday mode activated.
37:33Well done, hookers. Four deck chairs completed. It is now time to hear what Di, Sheila and Janie
37:40think of your amazing creations. So, we'll start with team number one.
37:50Oh, wow.
37:54I like the flowers, but what I'm not so keen on is the placement of them.
37:58Yeah.
37:59This curvature. I think that's probably happened because of the way it's been tied at the back.
38:05Absolutely. It's nice to see some good stitch definition here, though. This is like a
38:09cluster of three stitches that gives it that nice... It's almost sort of like a beach.
38:14Yes.
38:15And, I guess, the sea. So, that's really nice.
38:18I guess now is the time to see whether it'll hold my weight.
38:23I feel like I should do a gentle swish into... Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. Okay.
38:29Oh, the bungee hammock. Yay!
38:31It's actually quite comfortable, you know. Oh, very good.
38:34Very good.
38:35Yeah. Well, there we go. Right, on to the next one. Yay.
38:42Let us know what you think. Oh, wow. Oh, goodness me.
38:45Oh, this is really nice. This is a trip to the seaside.
38:48They've used that thicker, that really rope yarn. Oh, goodness me. Yeah.
38:52This one is extra specially functional. I like it.
38:55Fantastic stitch work. Yeah, yeah.
38:59So, it's really nice that they've used a stitch that is evocative of a shell as well.
39:03Yeah, it's really nice. There are some great small details in it, aren't there?
39:08Right, here we go. You're safe. I've got my ice cream.
39:10Oh. Oh.
39:12Oh. Oh.
39:13How does that feel, Tom? Yeah.
39:16I mean, it's holding my weight. Sure.
39:18It's comfortable. Yeah.
39:19It's fit for purpose, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Functionality.
39:21Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
39:30Here we go. Deck chair number three.
39:31Oh. Oh, my goodness.
39:33Oh, yeah.
39:34Oh, wow.
39:36Yes. Some very interesting extra touches.
39:41And it's one panel. It doesn't go round the back. No.
39:44So, it's only attached with the cord.
39:48With a sewn cord. Yeah.
39:52Granny squares are quite a basic stitch.
39:55So, it's just a treble stitch. Yes.
39:57I would have liked the edging to be neater. Yeah.
40:01I'm never sure about outlining things in black.
40:04You lay yourself open to having to do a really, really neat job.
40:09Yeah.
40:09I'm not quite sure about the cocktail glass.
40:14I thought at first it was a fish. Yeah.
40:17Here we go. Right. Let's get into this.
40:20Ooh. Ooh.
40:23A low squat.
40:25Yeah. It's just about holding.
40:28There's definitely a wee bit of a droop there.
40:30It did have a lot more give in it than the others. Yes. Yeah.
40:34And here we have our final deck chair.
40:39Wow. We love it.
40:41Ooh.
40:43So, this is the final yarn.
40:45It's chips, isn't it, in a cone, in some newspaper.
40:49Yeah. Newspaper. Fab.
40:51From a technical point of view, that's really...
40:53It is. ..really good.
40:54Intarsia crochet.
40:57Yeah. So, that's a really complicated technique.
41:00I can't help feeling they've done a really good...
41:03They have. They have.
41:05It really evokes the chips in a cone, doesn't it?
41:07..this one here. They've gone from...
41:09..this is double crochet... They've gone double and they've gone...
41:11..into trebles. Trebles.
41:13Yeah. So, the fact that the treble's here at the bottom...
41:16Mm. ..it's going to be a bit loose there.
41:19Yeah. Using the final yarn was pretty brave.
41:23What I am a bit concerned about is this line where they've sewn it down here.
41:27When you're away from it, you don't notice it. No.
41:29But up close, you can really see that line. No, you're absolutely right.
41:33Um... That is a shame. Yeah.
41:35Shall we try it out? Yeah. Yes.
41:37Are we ready? OK.
41:38Er, here we go. Right.
41:41Whoa!
41:42Whoa!
41:43Whoa!
41:46Are you...
41:47..hitting?
41:48Oh!
41:49I am on the floor.
41:50Oh, my goodness. Here we go.
41:52Whoa! Thank you.
41:55Yeah. Oh, what a shame.
41:57Time for Janie to reveal the results.
42:05In fourth place is the granny square, this one.
42:13We think the whole granny square thing is a bit safe.
42:17In third place is the lovely cone of chips.
42:21Oh, guys, I really... I love... I love this.
42:25It's just such a shame it failed the function test.
42:28In second place is this one with the stripes.
42:34So, then, in the first place, which is very exciting,
42:38with the beach huts and the sunshine and the seagull,
42:42it fitted the purpose, it didn't sag when Tom sat in it,
42:46and it just evokes everything about Seaside.
42:48So, we loved it.
42:50Well done, everyone.
42:52Yes, concrochelations to the whole time.
42:56Simon and Elsa, I know they get worse every time, don't they?
42:59Yeah.
43:03I think I was holding out a little bit of hope that maybe it would hold,
43:07but, yeah, that was pretty disappointing.
43:10Zowers did actually perform.
43:13You could sit on it and your bum didn't touch the floor.
43:16So, from that perspective, I was very, very disappointed.
43:20This week was completely on the fly.
43:23I am really hoping that the group challenge has saved my bacon.
43:30What a holiday week.
43:31I mean, we've had deck chairs, we've had swimsuits, bikinis, you name it.
43:36So, who do you think has done particularly well this week?
43:40It's been a great week for Lydia.
43:42I mean, that one piece was pretty spectacular.
43:47Lots of stitches and techniques.
43:50I loved it. I absolutely loved it.
43:53We also did love Elsa's piece.
43:55That was spectacular.
43:59So, who is in danger this week of being cast off?
44:03Stephanie.
44:06She failed on the deck chair challenge.
44:08That's where we get down to the design skills
44:12and she doesn't execute them terribly well.
44:15They're not clear.
44:16Her solo effort was also not very inspiring.
44:24Isaac, in the group challenge, structurally getting it wrong.
44:29Mm.
44:29In his solo challenge, glamour wasn't entirely present.
44:38Simon is also at risk
44:39because of the solo challenge.
44:42Yes.
44:43I think his planning went completely out the window
44:46and he was winging it, basically.
44:48He was.
44:49This is a tough decision and I'm glad that I have nothing to do with it
44:54and that it is on YouTube.
44:55Thank you, Tom.
44:56Welcome, knitters, to our knitting circle.
45:08Now is time to find out who's knit big
45:10and who is going to be leaving the yarn bar.
45:14We have chosen this week's big knitter
45:21and it's Lydia.
45:27Yay!
45:28And I think we all know what's coming next.
45:34So, can we give Lydia a big bang?
45:37And here is your shoe bang.
45:42Congratulations, congratulations.
45:48Now, of course, this is a competition
45:50and it gets harder and harder every week,
45:53but we have to cast someone off.
45:57And the person being cast off this week is...
46:05Stephanie.
46:08No.
46:09No, it's fine.
46:11It's all good.
46:12Thank you very much indeed.
46:15It's been fabulous.
46:16Thank you so much.
46:17You're doing such an amazing job, honestly.
46:18We will miss seeing your smiling face.
46:22Well done.
46:26I flippin' hope I've staked my ground in the competition now.
46:29And, you know, actually, to be fair,
46:31even if I go out next week,
46:33there was one week where what I did was the best
46:35and that, for me, is fantastic.
46:39Leaving the competition, absolutely gutted.
46:41It's been great fun.
46:42Just to experience knitting something different.
46:46If you'd have asked me to knit a deck chair,
46:47I would never have known where to start.
46:50All I can say to the knitters here is do your best
46:53and just put love in every stitch.
46:58Next time, it's playtime in the yarn barn.
47:01I'm done, baby.
47:03As the knitters crochet kids' fancy dress.
47:06It looks a little bit like a toilet seat.
47:09Honestly, it's got to the point where I'm just delirious.
47:13And go wild with wall hanging.
47:16Have you had a chance to look and see what the other team is doing?
47:19We're not interested in the losing team.
47:22I mean, the competition's getting real now.
47:24How long have we got?
47:25Doesn't matter. Just start as fast as you can.
47:27OK, OK.
47:27Go exploring on board some lavish liners
47:36that are destinations within themselves.
47:38Tomorrow at 8, we're inside the world's most luxurious cruises.
47:42Next tonight, every cabin holds secrets
47:44as simmering tensions threaten to erupt
47:47in Channel 4's brand new drama, Summer Water.
47:49Okay.
47:52It's about next performance.
47:53You can think of it as if our team is seeking to learn
47:53things in the future.
47:55You can see how they can grow them
47:56and work with the skills of
