00:00The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General warned world leaders that food has become a weapon in various conflicts around the planet.
00:08Speaking to the UN Security Council on Monday, Amina Mohamed said armed conflict and violence are the leading cause of food insecurity in most of the world's hunger hotspots.
00:18And in a spiral of death, we continue to invest in military expenditure rather than putting an end to hunger.
00:25The world's total military expenditure over the past decade, estimated at $21.9 trillion, yet ending hunger by 2030, would cost us much less, $93 billion a year.
00:38We cannot and must not accept these examples as the new normal.
00:42The hunger-conflict nexus is a strategic and existential threat, and this Council must treat it as such.
00:49Gaza, Sudan and Yemen are among the countries and territories with the highest levels of acute food insecurity.
00:56Leaders also described Africa as the epicenter of global hunger.
01:01Our continent holds 60% of the world's arable land.
01:07The youngest population and the greatest potential for innovation in sustainable agriculture.
01:14What we need is not sympathy, but solidarity, to unlock Africa's power to feed itself and to help feed the world.
01:26Last year, 295 million people faced acute hunger, 14 million more than the year before.
01:33Well, thank you so much for listening.
01:34But I know that we created T onions in there in three numbers as well and it did not compute the freshness of time and all of that we do.
