00:00on Spain's stunning southern Costa Blanca around the ever-popular seaside
00:04resort of Torre Vieja. I'm Laura Hamilton and for over 20 years I've had a
00:09passion for buying, renovating and selling property. Today I'll be using my
00:14skills to help Claire and Vicky, friends who are very much in harmony with each
00:18other. It has an extra bathroom. So this is two bed, I like that. And the
00:26properties keep making a splash. Welcome to the pool. Wow. Well that was a good
00:34reaction from you both. I visit a villa in a very desirable location. I've spied the
00:39sea over there and a very well manicured tree. Yes, it's a very well looked after plot.
00:44But at the end of the day will I find my house hunters their perfect place in the
00:48sun. Oh Claire. Oh what's that on? Oh that's absolutely lovely. Vicky and Claire and Claire's
01:00partner Paul all live under one roof. They do everything together and they describe
01:05themselves as one big happy family. So much so they've decided to pool their
01:09finances and buy a holiday home here on Spain's southern Costa Blanca. Vicky met
01:16Claire seven years ago through Paul and they've been inseparable ever since. They
01:20even work together. My family is basically Paul and Vicky and the puppies. We're the
01:30best of friends. We're more like sisters in our relationship. We get on so well. More
01:36like twins after time. Finishing each other sentences knowing what the other one's
01:41going to say. Usually laughing all the time. Cracking jokes. We've got a similar
01:48sense of humour. It's just a lovely family atmosphere. All the time. As well as living
01:57together in their bungalow in Stoke-on-Trent they've decided it's the perfect time to buy a holiday
02:01home to share in Torrevieja too. They have a budget of £70,000 to find it.
02:12Around a two and a half hour flight from the UK into Alicante and a 40 minute drive takes
02:16you to Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca in southeast Spain. Literally translated as Old Tower, named
02:23after the many watchtowers along the coastline from when this was a fishing village, Torrevieja
02:28is now a popular tourist destination with holidaymakers enjoying the gorgeous sandy beaches
02:33and water sports, the nature reserves, the two salt lakes and of course the many restaurants
02:39and bars too. With year round sunshine, beautiful beaches and affordable prices, demand for property
02:46around Torrevieja has increased by 40% over the last two years. To keep up, construction on
02:51previously abandoned projects has restarted and there are plans to build over 8,000 new homes
02:57in the next three years. All of which, according to agents, makes this a great time to buy.
03:03Before we start the search, I'm meeting my house hunters to find out exactly what they're
03:07looking for. Claire and Vicky, welcome to Torrevieja.
03:10Thank you very much. How does it feel standing here?
03:14It's quite surreal. There's someone else involved in the search as well isn't there?
03:19There is, my partner Paul. Will you be reporting back to Paul? Are you going to be making the decision
03:25between the two of you? No, we'll be reporting back to Paul and then if we decide that we want to go ahead
03:31with something, he'll say he's going to come fly out and have a look. Fantastic. Exciting times.
03:36Oh, amazing. You've chosen this part of Spain, Torrevieja. Why this particular area?
03:42Just from looking online and things, it just seems to have everything we need. Walks, cycling, just being outdoors really.
03:50Have you spent much time in this part of Spain, Claire? No, we haven't.
03:54So how many times have you been to this part? This is the first time. Wow! So it's even more exciting.
04:00All brand new for us. What's on your wish list when it comes to property?
04:04We're ideally looking for two beds, one bathroom, outside space for the pups.
04:10We've got three dogs, so hopefully they shall all be coming out with us.
04:15As long as we're close to some amenities.
04:18A pool would be a cherry on the cake. It's not the be-all and end-all for us.
04:25And like with the two bedrooms, they need to be of similar size.
04:30Not just one master bedroom and then like a small box room.
04:33Yeah. You mean you don't want to be on bunk beds? No.
04:36I need space with the dogs, you see. A single room.
04:39This is a holiday home, isn't it, in the first instance?
04:42In the first instance, perhaps we think probably just for the next two years.
04:47And then when we can get everything tied up at home, it's going to be our permanent move.
04:52Wow. So you've got a budget of £70,000 to spend?
04:56Yes.
04:57Got any wiggle room at all?
04:58We've got a bit of wiggle room, haven't we? Up to...
05:00We have, yeah. What we think?

05:02So you could go up another ten?
05:04But it would have to be the one.

05:14I'm excited to get started, but as these two have never been to Torra Vieca before,
05:19I think I should give them a bit of a feel for the town first.
05:22And I know the perfect spot.
05:25Welcome to our first stop, the boardwalk, in Torra Vieca.
05:28What do you think of this?

05:31Very popular place to come, obviously lined with the bars, the restaurants.
05:35What would the morning look like here?
05:37Oh, a stroll down here with the dogs, sit and have a coffee,
05:42do a bit of people watching.
05:44Are you beachy people? Do you like to sort of come to the beach?
05:47Me and Paul like beach. I go on the beach.
05:50But she doesn't like sanding her toes very much.

05:54How would you feel if I told you our first property
05:58was around a 15-minute drive from this very spot?

06:14We're heading to a neighbourhood called El Chaparral,
06:17a thriving residential area that I think could work really well
06:20for Claire and Vicky.
06:21My first property is in a fabulous urbanisation
06:24with lots going on nearby and has the added bonus of this.

07:36And they were pretty impressed with the patio area at the front of the property too.
07:40Inside is an open-plan lounge diner, which leads through to a good-sized kitchen.
07:45A little outside storage area.
07:48There are also two double bedrooms, one a bit larger than the other.
07:52But I don't think it would be too much of a compromise.
07:54Especially as there's a third single bedroom here too.
07:57And a modern shower room.

09:06It's a bit small, but it's manageable.
09:11Because it's a ground floor apartment, it's almost like being in a bungalow.

09:17And we live in a bungalow and that's what we like.
09:19So, that's the appeal for me.
09:22It's a beautiful place, beautiful property, but I think maybe just a little bit more space.

09:44Well, that's really interesting because I think that Vicky can see this really working
09:50for her as a permanent home, but I'm not so sure about Claire.
09:54It is the first property and maybe they're just holding things back because we've got more to see.

10:57It's good to have a property on the back burner at least. I'm taking them seven miles
11:05from here to Las Balcanes. But before we see the property there's someone I want them to meet
11:10as I think they'll have a lot in common.
11:11well vicky claire i'd like to introduce you to sue hi hi nice to meet you so so interestingly
11:22you purchased here having never been to the area before which is much like claire and vicky yeah
11:30we did um we came over on inspection trip about 20 years ago um and we ended up buying a property
11:37never expecting to but we did wow and we'd never been to spain before how have you found the move
11:42here for us it went very smoothly um we had we didn't really have any problems at all
11:46um we were very lucky to retire over here so for us it was very smooth ever go back to uk possibly
11:53i'd never say never being in this part of spain um the food's great the health care's great we love
11:59it because of the weather mainly it's been lovely to chat to you yeah we are going to head to our
12:03next property no giving anything away sue but it's three minutes away it's close yes it's close
12:09right okay okay bye bye coming up i can't wait to hear what vicky and claire make of my next property
12:18a two-bedroom apartment with some lovely views from its private roof terrace
12:22today i'm on spain's stunning southern costa blanca helping best friends claire and vicky
12:34find a holiday home that will one day become their permanent home with claire's partner paul
12:38he's leaving the legwork to vicky and claire though they want to find somewhere that works for all three
12:44of them and their three dogs too for their maximum 80 000 pound budget they liked my first property and
12:50it is still tentatively in the running but i know ideally they want somewhere a bit bigger
12:57so i've brought them to los balcones to a top floor apartment in a small urbanization
13:02it's just a short walk away from the bars restaurants and shops
13:06and i think the location would work really well for claire and vicky so first stop the communal pool
13:11so here we are look at this for your outside space okay
13:22oh what's all that on oh that's that's absolutely lovely why do you think you've
13:28been overcome with emotion i don't know it's just sometimes you get a feeling for a place and
13:33i've got a nice feeling about this place oh it's the palm trees look at the lovely trees and it's
13:41everything it's beautiful flowers it really is beautiful they really do care about the community
13:46here we're going to look at one of the apartments when you're ready of course
13:53so we're loving the outside space here big tick there location works yes yes big tick there let's
14:00head to the apartment then got everything across that's a big tick too yeah let's go thank you
14:06so a couple of steps from the pool then and the property we're going to look out now is on the
14:11corner corner plot two bed one bath so this place has been on the market for a year and is currently
14:17priced just over 82 and a half thousand pounds but the agent has said there would be room to negotiate
14:23that not much though uh but within your top end wiggle room 80 000 pounds what would paul say about
14:30this one do you think and this location i think he'd like this location have you spoken to paul at
14:36all about the first property yes we have we've spoken in length about it and it's going to be a
14:42non-contender okay he liked the outside area but he just felt that the rooms were a little bit too
14:50small for what we were wanting so we're ruling out the first property paul is vetoed by him and he's not
14:57even here i suppose we should head inside this one and see what you think then definitely yes please
15:05as well as the communal pool this apartment has a balcony and a huge roof terrace inside is a lounge
15:12diner which leads through to the kitchen the two double bedrooms here are equal sizes so no arguments
15:19over those and there's a shower room set this way so what do you think of this area i like this
15:29i like the flooring if you can just move it around to how you feel that it should be i like the color
15:37yellow is one of my favorite colors so you'd keep the color but you just changed the layout of the
15:43furniture furniture yeah so should we have a look at one of the bedrooms let's let's head this way and take a
15:47look at that thank you so this is the second bedroom i'm very stunning i love that loving the
15:56color yes i am no decorating in here no decorating in here at all and what about the size and space in
16:03here i like it it's a good size it is well should we head upstairs to the roof terrace and and take a
16:08look at that outside space please i love the fact you're so excited so look at this space your roof
16:19terrace what do you think very lovely indeed this is lovely so obviously you come out of the lounge
16:26onto that little patio down there and you've got this area up here so i'm thinking as much as i know
16:31you all love spending time together it's almost quite nice that you have like little individual areas
16:35as well yes if you want to get away from each other i don't know what do you think of those views
16:40stunning absolutely beautiful why don't you go and explore and i will see you afterwards lovely thank you
16:49well i'm disappointed to hear that they've ruled out property one because they don't think it's big
16:53enough but by the sounds of things this is a big improvement fingers crossed
16:57very nice claire this is good it's a nice size you don't want anything much bigger than this no you
17:07don't just right now i like this room very nice just your color as well vicky yeah and you've got the
17:17the wardrobe space so super clear was reduced to tears outside this corner apartment with a solarium
17:24on the market for just over a negotiable 82 and a half thousand pounds i'm feeling confident about
17:30this one hello hello laura hello how'd you get on absolutely superb brilliant what did you like about
17:37in particular it was light it was airy it the flow was nice okay good anything you weren't sure on no i
17:46loved all of it is it a contender yes yeah we have a contender so moving on from here are you sort of
17:55feeling much the same or another bathroom maybe or what you know what would you like i think another
18:02bathroom maybe if if we can stretch it let's go to our next property then lovely thank you off we go
18:08with things going so well i think there's time for a pit stop en route to the next property claire and
18:16vicky have never been here before at all so i want to show them somewhere i think will be appealing for
18:21the whole family the reason i brought you here is this is one of the dog friendly beaches in the area
18:28excellent see a few little doggies down there oh yes all having a good time do you get to take the
18:34dogs to the beach very much to tour in the uk uh not much no yeah they do have a bit of a run
18:40around with sand in the tones oh have you ever taken them abroad before never so how do you think
18:46what what would the plan be would you put them in a car and drive over or i mean i know they're
18:51little so certain airlines you can actually take the dogs on board i think the initial plan is to
18:56see about bringing them in the car but i would also inquire about because they're small flying them
19:03in with us right well we're gonna head to our next property it's 10 minutes in the car and 45 minutes
19:10on the bus fabulous right lovely ready to look yes thank you
19:18coming up i'm positive claire and vicky will love my next property
19:22which has an extra bathroom and this fabulous low maintenance outside space

19:39find a holiday home around the beautiful salt lakes of torrevieca and although there's room for
19:44improvement i'm pleased to say i bag myself my first contender they fell for this corner apartment with
19:50the amazing solarium in los balcones as it would work for them claire's partner paul and their three
19:56dogs they would love a second bathroom though if their maximum budget of 80 000 pounds could stretch
20:02to it so i've brought them to los altos a town just south of torrevieca it's smaller but it's got
20:09everything here claire vicky and paul could want and with properties around 12 percent cheaper than los
20:14balcones i've managed to line up a bigger apartment next property how's this for outside space very
20:23easy i thought you you might like this it has an extra bathroom oh so this is two bed i like that
20:33two bed two bath this is priced very similarly to the previous property so it's on the market just
20:39over 82 and a half thousand pounds all right again there would be a bit of room to negotiate but not
20:46a huge amount right shall we take a look around inside and talk more in the living room yes please
20:55this apartment has access to a lovely communal swimming pool as well as the private patio to
21:00the front that claire and vicky already love inside is a living and dining room a separate compact kitchen
21:07which leads out to a little courtyard there are two double bedrooms a shower room and that extra bathroom
21:18so if you are wanting more space this apartment is actually 10 square meters larger than the previous
21:27properties very nice thinking that wrap around sofa yes that would go nicely there just there lovely so
21:35you're liking the space yes loving the space now it's not a it's not a huge kitchen is there enough space here
21:44for what you would want to do claire i think so yeah there's there's plenty of counter space and
21:51you've got everything there washing machine fridge freezer cooker so my idea is if you
21:59did feel the kitchen wasn't quite big enough for you you could kind of continue along the wall here with
22:07a bit of an outside kitchen prep area yes because if you notice next door have actually enclosed it
22:16yes oh yes i can feel that there's potential there why don't you go and have a look around the rest of it
22:21the two bedrooms which again i've made sure are similar size there is no yellow but there are two
22:29bathrooms so you've got a bathroom each as well go and explore now see you in a bit thank you
22:37this is by far the largest property that they've seen so far and it sounds as though it's going really
22:43well so fingers crossed they like both the bedrooms and both the bathrooms oh this is nice size and it's got
22:54aircon as well like as well as your built-in yeah no this is a lovely size i like this nice and bright yeah
23:02nice size for me tv up there yes you and the pups on the bed exactly things seem to be going well at
23:17this ground floor apartment on the market for just over a negotiable 82 and a half thousand pounds have i
23:22got myself another contender well well well how did it go very lovely thank you oh
23:33do we have a new favorite it's not favorites on the same path but in a different level
23:39to the last one we just viewed right so it's on a par but a different level do you mean because
23:44it's ground floor as opposed to first floor so yes oh really literally just that it's kind of a ground
23:50floor alternative the other one you've got the solarium which is lovely yeah but this one
23:56this space out here is lovely yeah so and you like the second bathroom
24:01that was a very nice treat what do you think paul would say about this one i think he'd like this
24:08but then the other one does pull on the heartstrings yes well this is good it's a good sign though two
24:14two contenders then so far yes yes okay well as we've got these in the bag moving forward you live
24:21in a bungalow yes how would you feel if i could find you something that was a bit on
24:26par with what you have back home that would be special yeah i'd like that very much yes let's go

24:37we're heading back to el chaparral for my next property but as it's so close to one of torah
24:42viecca's famous salt lakes i just had to take claire and vicky there first to see it
24:47the pink lake of torah viecca now you've not been here in person so you've only seen them online
24:52exactly and read about them is it living up to your expectations more so is it it's a pinch me
24:57moment is it yeah it's lovely standing here it's so calm and tranquil and it's very very beautiful yeah
25:05this one's pink because actually um the bacteria there's a certain type of bacteria in here
25:10that makes it pink and in addition to that there's also some little shrimps some pink shrimps
25:16that are in here that the flamingos eat yeah and that is apparently why they're the color they are
25:24wow very good so there you go yes so shall we head to our next property we're feeling calm
25:31tranquil and zen very much yes let's go thank you
25:39we're heading to an established residential urbanization called san luis
25:43properties here have increased by around seven percent in the last year but despite that
25:47i've still managed to line up a great bungalow and while it doesn't have a pool
25:52it could really be a great home from home step this way
25:59not far then from the lake which you can almost touch oh yes you can always touch that can't you
26:06this is oh wow wow wow it's a two bed one bath bungalow wow it's lovely that is beautiful now it's
26:18currently priced just over 81 and a half thousand pounds the agent has said you would be able to
26:24negotiate to around 78 000 pounds wow any other thoughts at all before you take a look around can't
26:31wait to get in there that's all okay right well you're gonna look around this one on your own
26:35and i will be out here waiting in sunshine okay thank you
26:43well that's a fantastic initial response i just hope that the second bedroom isn't going to be too
26:49small for them they clearly love the look of this bungalow the front terrace is a great size and secure for
26:56the dogs and there's a staircase up to a gorgeous solarium with views of the pink lake inside is a
27:04spacious lounge diner which is open to the kitchen at the back the main bedroom is a good size the second
27:12a little smaller but still a double and there's a family bathroom
27:15wow very lovely now this is ticking all the boxes i'm liking the lighting
27:28and i love that wallpaper as well nice tiles and a lovely color it's lovely really is lovely
27:34this is very nice claire it's beautiful enough workspace for your cooking oh definitely i think paul would
27:46like it in here as well yeah i can just relax in there and watch you through them
27:55this is a nice room look at this it's quite quirky isn't it it's lovely

28:21beautiful isn't that lovely it's almost as tranquil as standing there isn't it it is it's lovely

28:35from the very beginning i'm intrigued to see what they think of it now they've seen it all
28:41hi hello hello what happened oh absolutely fabulous what do you like so much about it
28:50uh the kitchen brilliant don't have to do anything to it all the natural light the space in the living
28:58room i've got to ask how did you feel about the bedrooms because that was the the one sort of thing
29:03that's in king are you going to be happy with the space i love the second bedroom perfect i like the
29:08wardrobe going around the bed and it's just really cozy in there perfect so where does that leave us in
29:16terms of contenders for me this is a contender and it is the front runner definitely so this is the new
29:25front runner yeah it's the top one right wow we've got one last property left to look at and now i think
29:32i've got you know a really good idea of what you want what you like will you trust me with this final
29:39one yes most definitely should we head to our last property see what that brings and then you better
29:44call paul and let him know yes which your favorites are we certainly will let's go okay

30:05today i'm house hunting around the popular seaside town of tora the eca on spain's southern costa
30:10blanca with best friends vicky and claire who are looking for a holiday home that will one day become
30:15a permanent home for them and claire's partner paul as well as their three dogs the search is going so
30:22well we currently have three contenders and i've got one last property to show them paul's at home for
30:28now but he'll be flying over here to see anything they might want to buy for their maximum eighty thousand
30:32pound budget and he might need to start packing as the more we see the more they seem to like
30:38this first floor corner apartment with the amazing solarium and this ground floor apartment are both
30:43strong contenders but heading up the short list is this bungalow by the pink lake my final property
30:50though could well top the lot but before that i'm heading off to visit a detached villa in one of the
30:57most expensive neighborhoods of tora vieca la valeta on the market for just under one and a half million
31:03pounds this four bedroom home is in an enviable location i'm meeting the agent emma who's agreed
31:09to show me around hi emma nice to see you wow so what are we about to look at we're about to look
31:16at this stunning villa um it was built in early 2000s i've spied the sea over there and a very well
31:22manicured tree yes it's a very well looked after plot and the property is literally a stone's throw away
31:28from the sea you've not got a two-minute walk to the beach from here brilliant well can we go inside
31:32yeah let's get in so welcome i love the split level it's really lovely they've done such a great job on
31:40the property although it's only 23 years old they they've done some really beautiful traditional
31:45features throughout the property such as the split level the open archways the exposed beams yeah to say
31:51that the beams and the stonework around that fireplace really sort of give i suppose the new build home
31:56some character yes definitely there's that sea view yep you can't miss it can you i mean it is a great
32:03location isn't it it really is you've got absolutely everything on your doorstep here from bars supermarkets
32:08restaurants everything's a stone throw away and everything in the house by the looks of things as
32:12well with some great storage space yeah you also have uh your own office here and a fully fitted ensuite
32:19bathroom well i did spy the pool yeah so can we have a look at the outside space next come through and have a look
32:26this seems like quite a sizable plot considering you're so close to the beach so the plot itself
32:34is substantial 800 square meters is fairly big for this area by itself the plot in today's market

33:10here or this route actually it's um 10 miles this is a former train line and that was the train that was
33:16used to transport the salt from the lakes to tour of yecca it's so beautiful here really is absolutely
33:25you can't ask for anything else it's tranquil and calm but you're still close to things

33:37whether you know the area is right and whether you've uh found the right house or two or three or

33:52i'm taking them five minutes drive from here to el chaparral again as it's an area they seem to really
33:57like this time though we're heading to an urbanization called el limonar and i've managed to line up a
34:03fabulous property for the lowest amount so far just under 77 and a half thousand pounds
34:12as you liked the previous property the bungalow so much i thought i'd show you the bungalow
34:19as our final property excellent choice yeah spoiling us and there it is there it's two bed one bath
34:27renovated five years ago the agent has said they think you'd be able to get it for around 75 000
34:34pounds right the owners are keen to sell right shall we head inside yes please
34:42the property has a private courtyard at the front and another larger one at the back so plenty of room
34:48for the dogs the open plan living area has a cozy lounge and a modern kitchen at the other end
34:55as well as a utility room there are two good sized double bedrooms and a shower room come on in
35:04so this property all open plan utility room there on the left it's good to have yeah how do you feel
35:12about this kitchen and the workspace compared to what you've seen this is this is brilliant
35:20it's the biggest one yeah lots lots of space into this bedroom this is nice and bright
35:31it's a big space it's good do you think it surprised you that you've you've liked so many of the
35:36properties yeah you think to yourself right i've got a mindset of what i'm looking for and then
35:41something else comes along and you like that one and then something else comes along and you like that
35:46one it's a bit like being in a sweet shop isn't it you're like i'll have that one you can't have
35:51them all you gotta choose one let's take a look at the outside space at the back then see what you

36:01now i know i brought you in through the kitchen but actually beauty of this place is you could use
36:06that as your front door instead and you come in this way definitely this is a good space very nice

37:06impressed with the space inside and outside this bungalow with the two patios on the market for
37:10just under 77 and a half thousand pounds i wonder where this one's going to rank

37:32was discussed about the other apartments and the bungalow did you have you narrowed it down anymore

37:46and the first floor corner apartment yeah but not the ground floor one right so we've now got

39:42would be willing to accept offers on that one around 78 000 pounds having gone back to it
39:47what are you thinking i haven't looked at it like you said that our original budget was 70
39:53if it was something spectacular we could push to 80 we'd like to offer 72 000 pounds okay i think that
40:01i think that that is a good offer the property's been on the market now for nine months and there
40:06hasn't been any offers during that time interesting so if you're all happy how excited gonna put an offer
