Thousands gathered in Prague’s Old Town Square on November 17 to mark the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the peaceful 1989 uprising that ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Citizens remembered the fight for democracy and warned about its fragility in today’s political climate.

The anniversary comes as populist ANO party leader Andrej Babis seeks to form a new government following last month’s elections. Babis, an ally of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, has pledged to maintain Czech ties with the EU and NATO but has raised concerns over EU climate and migration policies.

00:16who are following us
00:18from the computers, mobile,
00:20or telecommunications.

00:30Democracy is a difficult
00:32and it is necessary to be here,
00:34because I am here today,
00:36to support the democratic forces.
00:38Because I survived the year 1968
00:42and I don't want to have another generation
00:44or something similar,
00:46or something similar,
00:48or anything,
00:50that was linked with violence and freedom.
00:52When I was 17.2.1989,
00:54it was 15 years ago.
00:56My students then demonstrated that
00:58as a student,
01:00and we thought,
01:02that we have to say,
01:04that we have to say,
01:06that we have to say,
01:08in recent years,
01:10that we have to fight every day.
01:12what is the deal?
01:14What is the deal?
01:16What is the deal,
01:18that we have to say?
01:20What is the deal?
01:22I think it is important to know,
01:24that everyone will agree
01:26with the deal,
01:27where our countries will最早
01:28in which we will get up.
01:30Because the government,
01:32which is the deal,
01:34is wanting to compete with our society,
01:36with civilized world,
01:37with European Union.
01:38And I have a lot of doubt that it will not be for our country and people who live in the world.
01:43When we are ready to fight against them, we are also actively fighting them.
01:47And that's why we think that we would, for the purpose of today's organization,

02:13I am here today because I remind myself of the freedom.
02:18Because it is not necessarily automatic quality.
02:23We see both of us along with the European Union.
02:27But they are still talking about populistic sides,
02:30which, according to my opinion,
02:33they are afraid of freedom.
02:35I came to the demonstration
02:38because I wanted to express
02:41my interest, my deep interest
02:43into the current political movement in our country
02:46and express my wish
02:49what should be done and what shouldn't
02:52be done in the case of the next government.
02:57These are the new situation.
03:01But my, as a woman
03:04who were a man who were a woman
03:06who were a man who did not promote
03:07like this.
03:10The power of youth

03:25Smiths, Smiths, Mass. Smiths, and the Racketskills.
03:29Mass. Smiths, Jackets, and the Racketskills.
03:32I love Smiths.
03:55Vy, co stojíte vzadu, mohli byste zkusit o 15 metrů pomalým tempem se posouvat směrem k Týnskému chrámu?
04:06Hodně by to uvolnilo lidem u radnice. Taky si můžu poprosit, zkusme se přesunout. Děkuju.
04:25Děkuju.
