Thousands in Slovakia and Czech Republic rally against leaders on Velvet Revolution anniversary

The Velvet Revolution in 1989 brought an end to decades of Soviet-dominated communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia, which peacefully split into two nations in 1993.

00:00On Monday, protesters in Slovakia and the Czech Republic
00:05marked the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution by demonstrating against their governments.
00:11The Velvet Revolution in 1989 brought an end to decades of communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia,
00:18which was then split into two nations in 1993.
00:22The Czech Republic and Slovakia then both joined the European Union and NATO,
00:27but many now worry its pro-European values are under threat.
00:33In Slovakia's Bratislava, tens of thousands of people protested against populist prime minister Robert Fico
00:40in his pro-Russian stance. Rallies and marches also took place in other cities.
00:46It's a lot of rain, and it's cold, but it shows that people depend on freedom,
00:52that they depend on democracy and that they don't let them take.
00:55Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, demonstrators protested against the recent formation of the government.
01:01We will say that we protest against the free vote, but that's not the truth.
01:07We don't protest against the vote. We just want respect to the basic democratic principles.
01:13Billionaire businessman Andrej Babiš won the parliamentary elections in October,
01:18but his populist party ANO fell short of a majority.
