Czech billionaire and populist leader Andrej Babis has officially returned to power as the country’s new prime minister after being appointed by President Petr Pavel in Prague. Babis, whose ANO party won the parliamentary elections, will take office next week and immediately join key European Council, ECOFIN, and EU ministerial meetings as the Czech Republic prepares for a busy month of regional negotiations.
During the swearing-in ceremony at Prague Castle, President Pavel said the appointment “fulfils the will of the voters,” while Babis vowed to defend Czech interests “at home and around the world.” His comeback marks a major political shift inside the European Union, especially ahead of crucial debates on migration, economic strategy, and EU security policy.
The ceremony featured full state protocol, including a military honor guard and a champagne toast between Babis and President Pavel. Speaking to the media afterward, Babis emphasized urgency, saying the new government wants to participate in upcoming EU summits without delay.
This development positions Babis—one of Europe’s most controversial political figures—back at the center of EU politics.
