00:00:00Harry and Meghan, adored by millions,
00:00:03their wedding watched by 1.9 billion people around the world.
00:00:10But today they're royal exiles,
00:00:13with public support at rock bottom.
00:00:16The honeymoon, in terms of Harry and Meghan's relationship
00:00:19with the rest of the royal family, was over very quickly.
00:00:23The seeds of this shocking fallout are sown at their wedding.
00:00:28Huge rifts tear apart the royal family.
00:00:32William and Harry lock horns.
00:00:34And Meghan goes to war with Kate.
00:00:38The bridesmaid dresses started a rift between Meghan and Catherine.
00:00:44I think Meghan was the ultimate bridesilla.
00:00:47The Queen is forced to reprimand the bride.
00:00:50The build-up to the wedding was basically one disaster after another for the relationship.
00:00:54Now, for the first time ever, we can reconstruct critical secret meetings.
00:01:02There was a conflict that just escalated and escalated and escalated.
00:01:06Thanks to the testimony of some of those involved.
00:01:10On the surface, this wedding was a fairy tale.
00:01:14It had become a nightmare.
00:01:14As this day of celebration turns to tragedy...
00:01:19The wedding was the turning point, really, where it all went horribly downhill.
00:01:23Leaving the royals in tatters.
00:01:25Harry and Meghan's wedding, it wasn't sort of a state occasion in the way that William and Catherine's was.
00:01:51It was much more of a celebrity affair.
00:01:56It was quite fun watching all the celebrity arrivals.
00:02:00There's the Clooneys.
00:02:02There's Oprah.
00:02:04All the different famous Hollywood names and British stars who came.
00:02:09So it was a real excitement and it was very positive.
00:02:11It was only later when it started emerging that Harry and Meghan invited people that they didn't really know.
00:02:21Apparently, one of the guests asked George Cleary, you know, how he knew Harry and Meghan and he said, I don't.
00:02:29I think that kind of speaks to Meghan forging these alliances quite early on because she's quite savvy like that.
00:02:35This fairy tale wedding is a global celebration, but behind the scenes, the build-up to this marriage, for some, has been nothing short of a living hell.
00:02:51It started back in the summer of 2016.
00:02:56By royal standards, Meghan's relationship with Harry is a whirlwind.
00:03:01Harry and Meghan had mutual friends and Harry spotted her on social media and instantly thought, wow, she's amazing.
00:03:14Harry doesn't recognize her, but Meghan is a star in the hit series Suits.
00:03:20She's three years older than him and a divorcee.
00:03:23They met up famously at Soho House in London and from that moment on, he knew she was the one for him.
00:03:37Harry was the bachelor.
00:03:39His brother was married and Harry was the cheeky chappy member of the royal family and everyone wanted him to succeed in his love life.
00:03:48But the pace of Harry and Meghan's relationship concerns Prince William.
00:04:09It might not last, Harold, and you've got to be okay with that.
00:04:13I've never felt like this before.
00:04:15I think she's the one.
00:04:16Harry actually says at one point that both of them have a kind of radar for people who they think, you know, are out to get something from them.
00:04:24And you get the sense that maybe William was concerned that Meghan could fall into that category.
00:04:29She's an American actress after all.
00:04:33William pointed to the background of Meghan and raised some potential red flags.
00:04:39William spent years dating Kate before he proposed.
00:04:44He made sure that she knew what she was letting herself in for.
00:04:48I think you should just slow down.
00:04:51I don't want to see you hurt.
00:04:53Don't you want to see me happy?
00:04:57Harry was much older and he started dating Meghan.
00:05:02They were in love within minutes.
00:05:04And I think William was like, are you sure you know what you're getting yourself into?
00:05:07It's not about Meghan.
00:05:09I'm looking out for you.
00:05:12I don't think that Harry appreciated those comments.
00:05:15It triggered that instinct in Harry to feel as though he's not treated as being important.
00:05:21His emotions aren't important.
00:05:23His relationships are not as important as William's.
00:05:25Despite William's warnings, on the 27th of November 2017, Harry and Meghan make a big announcement.
00:05:37Well, we have some good news out of London where Clarence House has announced the engagement of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle.
00:05:44Harry and Meghan are engaged after 16 months of dating.
00:06:02Together with William and Kate, they are a bright future for the royal family.
00:06:07The Fab Four.
00:06:08But this relationship is put under strain when Meghan moves into Kensington Palace and divisions grow.
00:06:17And I have to ask you, working together as family, do you ever have disagreements about things?
00:06:23Oh, yes.
00:06:25The Fab Four dynamic as Meghan joined the royal family did fall apart quite quickly.
00:06:31In 2020, Harry makes a bombshell announcement that stuns the world.
00:06:38They are resigning from the royal family.
00:06:40It's simple as that.
00:06:41They are stepping back as what they call senior royals.
00:06:43The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly.
00:06:50Later that year, Harry and Meghan quit the UK for North America.
00:06:56And then, things start to go seriously wrong.
00:06:59Releasing a series of projects that reveal shocking secrets about their life inside the royal family.
00:07:08They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family.
00:07:13But they weren't willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.
00:07:16Since then, Harry and Meghan have been in exile from the royal family.
00:07:20There has been, for a long time now, no contact between Harry and his father.
00:07:26There is a lot of hurt there.
00:07:29And it will take an awful lot to repair those wounds.
00:07:32The key event, responsible for this devastating split, was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives.
00:07:40But as planning gets underway for the wedding, tensions grow between William and Harry.
00:07:49The chat between William and Harry about where the wedding should be was just so classic of the nature of their relationship.
00:08:03Hey, Wills, Meghan and I think we should get hitched at Westminster Abbey.
00:08:13No good, Harold. We did it there.
00:08:16From Harry's point of view, he wants parity.
00:08:19You know, he wants to know that he is important too.
00:08:22Right. St Paul's?
00:08:24Two grand. Plus, Pa and Mummy did it there.
00:08:27I can't actually see a reason why Harry couldn't have gone back there.
00:08:33But I think for William, he did want to create something to distinguish his wedding of a future king and queen from Harry and Meghan's.
00:08:42How about Tetbury?
00:08:46That chapel near Highgrave?
00:08:48Seriously, Willie?
00:08:50How many does that place seed?
00:08:51Suggesting to Harry that he should get married in some village church is never going to go down very well.
00:09:00Isn't that what you said you wanted?
00:09:02A small, quiet wedding?
00:09:04Obviously, to Harry, that cuts deep.
00:09:07What he wants is to be given the reassurance that his wedding matters, his wife matters, he matters.
00:09:13Me and Meg had one other idea.
00:09:17St George's at Windsor.
00:09:18St George's Chapel was a perfect solution.
00:09:22It is officially a royal chapel, whereas Tetbury would have been effectively a civilian church.
00:09:32Although Harry is pleased with the venue, his bride-to-be is less impressed.
00:09:38During the rehearsals, away from prying eyes, Meghan reportedly has an issue with this beautiful, 500-year-old building.
00:09:50Oh, it smells so damp and stale in here.
00:09:54It's horrible.
00:09:55Well, it was reported at the time that Meghan found the smell in the chapel quite musty, and she didn't really like it,
00:10:00and she wanted to use some kind of atomizer or perfume or sprays to freshen up the smell in the chapel with something of her choice.
00:10:06It's meant to be my fairy tale day, and it smells of mold.
00:10:11But there was a bit of pushback, I think, at the palace who didn't understand why she would need to do this.
00:10:15It was fine for the Queen and every other Sunday service and all the other ceremonial events that take place there.
00:10:20So why wasn't it a fine for Meghan and Harry's wedding?
00:10:24It might point to the idea that Meghan was, at that point, already becoming known for making a lot of demands,
00:10:29and so this was just another one on the list that they didn't want to acquiesce to.
00:10:32With just weeks to go before the wedding, the public are unaware of the turmoil unfolding behind the scenes.
00:10:43But this is just one of Meghan's many demands, cementing her reputation as the difficult duchess.
00:10:51She was completely balmy, and she completely lost the ability to hear the word no.
00:10:56She was so rigid.
00:10:57She wasn't willing at all to play by the traditional rules.
00:11:01And I'm afraid she's the ultimate Bridezilla.
00:11:14Bridezilla.
00:11:16Or just a stressed-out bride-to-be.
00:11:20Meghan allegedly bullies staff members.
00:11:23And, it's said, pushes people to breaking point.
00:11:31Little by little, more and more, was coming out about how unhappy certain palace aides were with the way in which Meghan worked.
00:11:40When you see the number of staff that left, there was a pattern, and people will argue no smoke without fire, and more and more of those stories appeared, the more it seemed like Meghan was difficult to work for.
00:12:06It was just one of those chip, chip, chipping away, little things, where staff were getting disgruntled, and they got bigger and bigger and bigger, and we now know they call themselves the Sussex Survivors.
00:12:17They think they've got PTSD.
00:12:19They were hugely traumatized by this experience of working for Harry and Meghan.
00:12:27Meghan's alleged demanding behavior isn't just reserved for her staff.
00:12:31I think she was becoming known for being quite dictatorial and demanding.
00:12:41If I could get rid of you, I would.
00:12:48She was busy, busy, busy, and expected everyone else to fall into line.
00:12:57Catherine and William are famously close with their staff.
00:12:59Really, really respectful.
00:13:01Meghan comes on the scene and starts treating everyone like a Hollywood assistant.
00:13:06What's wrong?
00:13:07What happened?
00:13:08It was a shared team who worked for both Harry and Meghan and William and Kate, and so that inflamed the rift between William and Kate on the one hand and Meghan and Harry on the other.
00:13:18You're doing a great job.
00:13:20We'll speak to her.
00:13:21It's really important to the royal family not to act like you're some lofty Hollywood celebrity and to be very kind to your staff.
00:13:29You know, these are the people that you trust around you.
00:13:31With disgruntled employees becoming more vocal, William confronts his brother.
00:13:42So, you wanted to see me?
00:13:45Harold.
00:13:47Meghan is difficult.
00:13:48Who's been saying that?
00:13:50She's rude.
00:13:51She's abrasive.
00:13:52She's alienated half the staff.
00:13:53So, William didn't pay Peacemaker, actually.
00:13:57William pointed this out to Harry and said, you've got to get this girl in line.
00:14:02Meghan's lawyers deny the allegations of bullying and call them a calculated smear campaign using misleading information.
00:14:13Coming up, William and Harry fall out just before the wedding.
00:14:17Harry was clearly very, very disappointed about this.
00:14:21He saw it as their tradition.
00:14:23It's what he had done for William the night before his wedding.
00:14:26And an explosive row between Meghan and her future sister-in-law, Kate, tears their relationship apart.
00:14:33These little moments built up into this huge feud between the two women.
00:14:38Today, more than seven years after their fairytale wedding, Harry and Meghan are raising two children, totally removed from the royal family.
00:15:02Harry and Meghan are now living across the Atlantic and a million miles apart from the rest of the royal family.
00:15:11Over the last five years, they have released a series of interviews and books that have torn apart their relationship with the royals.
00:15:19All of those allegations and all of those comments really damaged the trust that they had in him and his ability to keep things private.
00:15:29What led to this devastating rift can be traced back to their wedding in 2018.
00:15:51The union of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is a truly global event.
00:15:59Nearly two billion people around the world watch on TV and hundreds of thousands gather in Windsor, hoping to catch a glimpse of the happy couple.
00:16:11Windsor was buzzing.
00:16:13I remember the crowds in Windsor, the press, the American press in particular.
00:16:17This was their girl marrying into the British royal family.
00:16:21There was a real excitement about that marriage and what it would mean for the monarchy.
00:16:32But behind the scenes, there are bust-ups between the brothers, even over Harry's appearance on his big day.
00:16:40As the wedding approaches, Harry visits his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, to make a special request to break with protocol.
00:16:58Granny, I know this goes against tradition, but please, may I keep my beard for my wedding?
00:17:03I've had it for years and I feel more calm with it.
00:17:06I understand. Yes, that's fine. We wouldn't want you upset on your big day, Harry.
00:17:14He asked the Queen if he could have a beard for his own wedding and she let him do that and William couldn't believe it.
00:17:26Harold, I'm on my way over. We need to have a little chat and get something straight.
00:17:30It seems very small when you talk about two brothers disagreeing over wearing a beard.
00:17:36But at the time, if you were an officer in the British military and Harry was an officer in the British army, you weren't allowed to have a beard.
00:17:46William's obviously got a very different weight on his shoulders and so he has to do his things by the book and follow protocol.
00:17:51I don't think anyone thought William might have been able to have a beard for his own wedding.
00:17:55Whereas there was obviously a little bit more leeway with Harry.
00:17:57Harold, we need to talk.
00:18:07So William always thought Harry was getting away with things.
00:18:10Harry always thought that William was put first and was prioritised as the older brother because, of course, he would one day inherit the throne, whereas Harry wouldn't.
00:18:20In his tell-all book Spare, Harry details his row with William.
00:18:27You spoke to Granny about your beard.
00:18:31Yes.
00:18:32What did she say?
00:18:37She said I could keep it.
00:18:38An exception was made for Harry, and that was why what is on the face of it, a very small matter, facial hair, became a big matter between these two brothers.
00:18:56You put her in an uncomfortable position, Harold.
00:18:59She had no choice but to say yes.
00:19:00No choice.
00:19:01She's the Queen.
00:19:02The tensions which erupted were symptomatic of the tensions that these two brothers have had all their lives.
00:19:15Why does it matter to you so much?
00:19:18Because I wasn't allowed to keep mine.
00:19:20William wasn't the Commander-in-Chief of the British Armed Forces.
00:19:27It was his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who was in charge of the army.
00:19:31So it was Granny, as they called her, who made the decision and let Harry get married with his now infamous facial hair.
00:19:43Disagreements like this take a toll on the brothers' relationship.
00:19:46The evening before the wedding, the two princes meet the public.
00:19:59You've got your cameras in the right position.
00:20:01You're focusing on the gates.
00:20:03The public have a level of anticipation that, wow, perhaps they are going to come out.
00:20:08And they did.
00:20:12There's the banter between them.
00:20:14Interestingly, William is standing back.
00:20:17He knows it's Harry's big moment.
00:20:20Harry's greeting the crowds.
00:20:21William follows on.
00:20:23That, of course, was the perfect picture that everyone wanted.
00:20:28It was very different behind the scenes.
00:20:30But just a few hours earlier, this happy event was not going to happen.
00:20:41Harry had a plan.
00:20:44See you tonight for my last night as a free man.
00:20:49Can't do it, Harold.
00:20:50Kate and the kids.
00:20:53Harry was clearly very, very disappointed about this.
00:20:57He saw it as their tradition.
00:20:58It's what he had done for William the night before his wedding.
00:21:01It suggests, from a very early stage in Harry's married life, that William and Harry were in different places.
00:21:26William had children of his own.
00:21:28Harry wanted his brother to put that to one side for the days of the wedding and didn't think that William was putting him first.
00:21:37William went off for tea with Granny at Windsor Castle.
00:21:49After he came out, he texted Harry and said, Harold, I'm going to make it work.
00:21:58Let's go meet the crowds.
00:21:59Harry thinks that it must have been Granny, Queen Elizabeth II, that changed William's mind.
00:22:07Whether you're a royal family or not, it's still a huge moment, and having your brother by your side, you know, he's got your back.
00:22:18That's what Harry wanted.
00:22:21Minor little irritations which crop up in any wedding are that much bigger when it is a royal wedding.
00:22:28So, walking back together, we think they'll be spending the whole evening together.
00:22:38Harry hopes that's the case, but William says, OK, I'll come for dinner, but then I've got to go home, Kate and the kids.
00:22:50For Harry, it was another reminder of his sense that he didn't matter as much.
00:22:58In the build-up to the wedding, William and Harry were not getting on.
00:23:03They were at their lowest ebb.
00:23:10Coming up, one of the most explosive royal rows of all time.
00:23:16An argument over a bridesmaid's dress leaves Meghan and Kate's relationship in tatters.
00:23:24I think that Catherine interpreted this as a snub, really.
00:23:27These little moments built up into this huge feud between the two women.
00:23:33And just before her big day, Meghan's family betrays her.
00:23:39It was devastating, humiliating, so embarrassing for Meghan.
00:23:45Harry and Meghan now live in California, totally cut off from the royal family.
00:24:12After a series of interviews telling their story.
00:24:17They're happy to lie, to protect my brother.
00:24:22The royal family feels betrayed.
00:24:24Harry and Meghan, the rift has really never been bigger.
00:24:28In terms of his relationship with William, it's dead in the water.
00:24:32The roots of this separation can be traced back to the couple's 2018 wedding.
00:24:39From the first light, you can just sense it was one of those really great days.
00:24:58As the day of the wedding arrives, the global media jostle for prime positions.
00:25:07Around the world, nearly two billion people are watching Harry and Meghan's big day.
00:25:13We were in Windsor for several days leading up to the event.
00:25:16A media village had been set up within the walls of Windsor Castle.
00:25:22You had broadcasters from all over the world talking about this big day coming up.
00:25:29As Meghan prepares for the biggest day of her life, the pressure grows.
00:25:48Meghan was staying at Cliveden.
00:25:50It's a fabulous hotel.
00:25:52It started very, very early.
00:25:56And when the last minute touches her dress, makeup, that sort of thing.
00:26:00It did mean that she was a little bit on the late side.
00:26:03It's her wedding and it's a very personal moment.
00:26:05It's being watched across the whole world.
00:26:08I think most women have found that hugely daunting.
00:26:22At 11.58am, Princess Kate arrives with Princess Charlotte and the other bridesmaids at St. George's Chapel.
00:26:30It's absolutely picture-perfect fairy tale, isn't it?
00:26:33But behind the scenes, three-year-old Charlotte is at the centre of a huge row that will end in tears.
00:26:40The bridesmaid dresses.
00:26:44This is when we first started to learn of a rift between Meghan and Catherine.
00:26:52On the 14th of May, 2018, the Givenchy dress intended for Charlotte arrives.
00:27:15And she tries it on for the first time.
00:27:20Doesn't fit you, darling.
00:27:22It's too long.
00:27:23We'll have to get it altered.
00:27:26Charlotte had cried because her dress was too baggy.
00:27:29Parents hate to see their children cry.
00:27:30They then have a problem that they have to resolve.
00:27:33These things do happen.
00:27:35The real question is why they couldn't resolve it and why it blew up so big.
00:27:39Megan, there's a problem with the bridesmaid dresses.
00:27:54Now, what seems to have happened, the conversation that Harry details, is that Catherine had texted Meghan.
00:28:03Charlotte's tried on her bridesmaid dress at home.
00:28:06It doesn't fit.
00:28:07It needs to be completely remade.
00:28:15Meghan doesn't reply for a day.
00:28:19I think that Catherine interpreted this as a snub, really, and thought, I can't be ghosted.
00:28:32And I wouldn't blame her for thinking that.
00:28:34But these little moments built up into this huge feud between the two women.
00:28:39Charlotte's dress is too big.
00:28:58She cried when she tried it.
00:29:00Right.
00:29:00And I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am here at Kensington Palace.
00:29:06I think probably both women felt in different ways disrespected.
00:29:11Meghan felt like Kate should just deal with the problem because Meghan had a thousand problems.
00:29:16And Kate felt that, you know, her daughter's emotions were important and she needed some help.
00:29:22Kate, I have a lot of other things going on right now.
00:29:25I'm not sure what else to say.
00:29:28If the dress doesn't fit, then please take Charlotte to see AJ.
00:29:32He's been waiting all day.
00:29:33It was a conflict that just escalated and escalated and escalated and nobody ever managed to stop that process.
00:29:43Fine.
00:29:47Now, the first version of the story told us that Catherine was left in tears by this row with Meghan.
00:29:55Then in Oprah and Spare, we get a different version of events.
00:29:59That actually it was Meghan who was in tears.
00:30:08Harry said he found her sobbing on the floor when he came home.
00:30:12Meg, what's wrong?
00:30:14What's happened?
00:30:15It was a misunderstanding, but it was one that had clearly affected both of them.
00:30:20It's Kate.
00:30:22Oh, she's drawing a fit over Charlotte's dress.
00:30:26I think in all likelihood, both Catherine and Meghan were very frustrated by this exchange, by what was going on.
00:30:36It's highly likely they were both left in tears about this.
00:30:39But the following day, Catherine went round to Nottingham Cottage with a bunch of flowers and a card to say sorry to Meghan.
00:30:58That's where it ends in Harry's book.
00:30:59Meghan told us initially about this when she did her Oprah Winfrey interview and said, you know, Kate came round and apologised.
00:31:22So to Meghan, the flowers were the proof that Kate was in the wrong.
00:31:26It was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something, but she owned it and she apologised and she brought me flowers and a note apologised.
00:31:36And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability.
00:31:41It's a gesture from Catherine to try and smooth things over.
00:31:44Things had obviously got heated the day before.
00:31:46And they probably both said things that they didn't mean.
00:31:50I heard that Catherine also brought round Wimbledon tickets.
00:31:54Meghan was apparently offended because she felt the tickets were freebies.
00:31:59The flowers were relatively cheap and she felt it wasn't enough of a gift and she expected something bigger, a bigger gesture.
00:32:08This gesture, it seems, was not met in the manner with which it was intended.
00:32:13Then it got leaked in the papers that actually the flowers wound up in the bin.
00:32:24So even an apology with flowers wound up as a battleground.
00:32:38However it was resolved, Charlotte looked great on the day.
00:32:42Perhaps Meghan was right and, you know, AJ the tailor did a great job.
00:32:46It isn't just her future in-laws that Meghan falls out with.
00:33:03In the run-up to the wedding, estranged family members back in America are also the cause of conflict.
00:33:18Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, had two children by a previous marriage.
00:33:23Thomas Markle Jr. and Samantha Markle.
00:33:26They were not close to Meghan at all.
00:33:29In one of her interviews, she said that she didn't have any siblings.
00:33:34That's how she saw Thomas Jr. and Samantha.
00:33:39They were nothing to her.
00:33:41And boy, did they make her pay for it.
00:33:43Dear Prince Harry, it's not too late.
00:33:52Oh, the letter.
00:33:54The most excruciating, excoriating letter.
00:33:59Meghan is obviously not the right woman for you.
00:34:04Penned by Meghan's estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr.,
00:34:09in which he writes to Prince Harry that he is making the biggest mistake in royal wedding history.
00:34:15It's very apparent that her tiny bit of Hollywood fame has gone to her head.
00:34:22That Meghan is a fraud.
00:34:24That she's playing the part of a princess like a C-list Hollywood actress.
00:34:31And he tells Harry, it's not too late to change your mind.
00:34:34He crawled out of the woodwork.
00:34:37And in the run-up to the wedding, not having been invited, well, war was declared.
00:34:45Thomas Markle Jr.'s open letter is published around the world.
00:34:51It was devastating, humiliating, so embarrassing for Meghan.
00:34:57But the biggest humiliation and heartache for Meghan is caused by her absent father.
00:35:06Someone she had always been close to and trusted.
00:35:13Thomas Markle was a problem, but I don't think anyone in the palace would have predicted
00:35:17that the problem would become as big as it did.
00:35:20Just days before the wedding, a series of photos of Thomas Markle emerge and make global news.
00:35:35In each, he seems to be unaware they're being taken.
00:35:41So he was shown in a cafe, I think, reading a guidebook.
00:35:44He was shown getting measured for his suit with his arms out with someone with a tape measure.
00:35:48A whole series of photographs that made it look like he'd just been papped in his preparations for the wedding.
00:35:55But word soon reaches Meghan that her father might have secretly collaborated with a paparazzi
00:36:01and staged the photos.
00:36:06Meghan has a phone call with her father in which he denies being a part of this.
00:36:14Meg, I didn't stage any photos.
00:36:23This is serious.
00:36:25You have to tell me the truth.
00:36:27I swear, I don't even know the guy.
00:36:31Okay, come to England now.
00:36:33We'll book you a flight.
00:36:34Uh, I can't now.
00:36:37Um, I have things to do.
00:36:39Uh, he's lying.
00:36:43Then came irrefutable proof.
00:36:47It was all a set-up.
00:36:49What the Mail on Sunday managed to do is fly out to Mexico, which was where he lived, Rosarito,
00:37:01and they managed to pull CCTV showing him with the photographer staging these pictures.
00:37:08And it absolutely shattered Meghan's relationship with her father.
00:37:12Thomas Markle had agreed to be photographed and was reportedly paid $100,000 for playing along.
00:37:24Meghan's in Windsor.
00:37:26All of the preparations are underway for the wedding.
00:37:30The guests are starting to fly in.
00:37:32The rehearsals are happening.
00:37:34And yet, her father, the man who was supposed to be walking her up the aisle in St. George's Chapel,
00:37:42is selling photographs to the newspapers.
00:37:45It's devastating.
00:37:47So Thomas Markle, you know, really sold his daughter out over and over and over again.
00:37:51And that started in that week up to the wedding, colluding with the paparazzi so he could sell pictures.
00:37:57You're continually telling lies.
00:38:00I mean, it's diabolical, actually.
00:38:02After the wedding, Thomas Markle puts forward his side of the story in an exclusive interview on Channel 5.
00:38:10Every paper seemed to want to make me look like a dumb, fat slob.
00:38:18The idea was that these would all be candid shots, discreet, no one would know.
00:38:23They were posed or anything.
00:38:25It would be just me doing my routine daily.
00:38:28I didn't do it for money.
00:38:30I did this to change my image.
00:38:37In the wake of this tabloid scandal, there's another bombshell for Meghan.
00:38:42And we begin with breaking news.
00:38:44Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Senior, has reportedly suffered a heart attack.
00:38:48It suddenly emerged that Thomas Markle was in hospital and was not going to make it to the wedding.
00:38:55It was an excuse.
00:38:56I mean, there's certainly, that was the feeling in some quarters, there was an excuse not to come.
00:39:00With no response from her father, amidst all the last-minute preparations and rehearsals, Meghan releases a statement.
00:39:22Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding.
00:39:29I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.
00:39:35The statement that Meghan has to put out just days before the wedding, it's humiliating that her father has put her in this position.
00:39:49That he has found himself in this mess.
00:39:52Devastating that he's not going to be there.
00:39:54In her hour of need, Prince Charles, her future father-in-law, steps up and escorts Meghan down the aisle.
00:40:17That was, for me, a really touching moment.
00:40:19And it was a sign that this isn't just the royal family.
00:40:24This was a family moment.
00:40:26And this was the father-in-law stepping in.
00:40:30Because Meghan's father couldn't be there.
00:40:35Coming up.
00:40:36This is the one.
00:40:39An outburst over tiaras lands Harry in hot water with Her Majesty the Queen.
00:40:45One thing that the Queen would never countenance was the ill-treatment or rudeness towards her staff.
00:40:54Today, married life for Harry and Meghan is in California.
00:41:20A series of interviews and books featuring shocking allegations against the royal family created a huge rift between them and the monarchy.
00:41:34Between Harry and Meghan, Harry's brother William and his wife Catherine, the divide is huge.
00:41:41There is a lot of hurt there.
00:41:43And it will take an awful lot to repair those wounds.
00:41:46This disastrous split from the royal family can be traced back to a series of secret arguments around Harry and Meghan's wedding.
00:41:57This bubbling away of bitterness that all came to the surface and the public didn't know much about at all.
00:42:03At 12.03, Harry finally sees his bride.
00:42:16This moment is beamed around the world, watched by 1.9 billion people.
00:42:23Meghan looks the perfect princess, complete with a royal tiara.
00:42:28But what no one knows is that this has been the source of tears and tantrums.
00:42:35In the run-up to the wedding, the queen said, would you like to come to Buckingham Palace?
00:42:54Would you like to borrow one of my tiaras?
00:42:56And this was a huge honour.
00:42:58So Harry describes going along to Buckingham Palace and there on the table are set out five beautiful tiaras.
00:43:09The queen is there and her dresser, Angela Kelly.
00:43:22There are the most stunning tiaras there.
00:43:24He said one was all emeralds, one was aquamarines.
00:43:27But there was one, he described, that stood out and just looked like it was made for Meghan.
00:43:32And that's the one she chose.
00:43:35This is the one.
00:43:36Yeah, it's beautiful.
00:43:41Tiaras suit you.
00:43:44Thank you, ma'am.
00:43:54Meghan reportedly set her sights on the Greville Emerald Kokoschnik tiara,
00:44:00given to the Queen Mother by Dame Margaret Greville in 1942,
00:44:04and worth more than £10 million.
00:44:09The royal household had decided that perhaps this was a bit risky,
00:44:13the provenance of the tiara might be problematic,
00:44:16and had suggested that she should choose something else.
00:44:20The history to this one might be a bit problematic.
00:44:23Best to choose one of the others.
00:44:25Harry is somebody who is quite entitled.
00:44:37You know, he does think that if he wants access to the tiara, he should get it.
00:44:41But he also wanted Meghan to matter to people,
00:44:44and for people to kind of be bending over backwards to give her what she wants.
00:44:49They had to go through Angela Kelly.
00:44:52Angela Kelly also has a bit of a reputation for being quite, um, quite harsh, I think.
00:44:59Her nickname is AK-47.
00:45:01Angela Kelly was the Queen's senior dresser and personal assistant
00:45:06from 1993 right up until Her Majesty's death.
00:45:11Unfortunately, Miss Markle can't use this tiara.
00:45:14What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.
00:45:17Listen here.
00:45:18I'm protecting you both.
00:45:20This one might have a troublesome history.
00:45:22Harry, the unstoppable force, met the immovable object,
00:45:29and then Angela Kelly, who initially just refused to engage with him and stonewalled him.
00:45:33She was quite fierce, and they got on the wrong side of Angela Kelly,
00:45:36and I don't think that was a very good move.
00:45:44Reportedly, word gets back to the Queen about Harry's alleged bad behaviour.
00:45:52Meghan cannot have whatever she wants.
00:45:56She gets the tiara that she's given by me.
00:45:59Yes, ma'am.
00:46:01The Queen had a real soft spot for her grandson, Harry.
00:46:06But one thing that the Queen would never countenance
00:46:10was the ill-treatment or rudeness towards her staff.
00:46:19Meghan thought she was near the top of the tree,
00:46:22and didn't understand why she couldn't always get what she wanted.
00:46:33Those gathered inside St George's Chapel,
00:46:36admiring the beautiful tiara,
00:46:38have no idea about the dramas it had allegedly caused.
00:46:43They, along with nearly two billion others around the world,
00:46:47watched The Happy Couple.
00:46:48I think one particular thing that stood out to me
00:46:52was actually the rapport between the bride and the groom.
00:46:57Harry and Meghan are now to enter this way of life.
00:47:03They will each give their consent to the other.
00:47:06The love between them.
00:47:08The reassuring glances that he would throw her throughout the ceremony.
00:47:11The smile that she would wear, I think that, for me, was really powerful.
00:47:16In the presence of God, and before this...
00:47:25At 1239, the Archbishop of Canterbury
00:47:28pronounces Harry and Meghan husband and wife.
00:47:32They have declared their marriage
00:47:34by the joining of hands
00:47:36and by the giving and receiving of rings.
00:47:39I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.
00:47:47Cameras capped to the moment, cheers from outside
00:47:50are heard inside the chapel.
00:47:54But is all what it seems?
00:47:57Has the wool been pulled over everyone's eyes?
00:48:00Three years after the wedding,
00:48:03during her Oprah interview,
00:48:05Meghan drops a bombshell.
00:48:07You know, three days before our wedding, we got married.
00:48:11Ah.
00:48:12No one knows that, but we called the Archbishop
00:48:14and we just said, look, this thing,
00:48:16this spectacle is for the world,
00:48:18but we want our union between us.
00:48:21We see Meghan saying,
00:48:22the Archbishop of Canterbury married Harry and I
00:48:24several days before.
00:48:26That was our real wedding.
00:48:27I'm so happy we're doing this.
00:48:41This is for us.
00:48:43Me too, Meg.
00:48:45It was just a tiny private ceremony
00:48:48that they had away from the cameras
00:48:50and the glaring eyes and all the drama
00:48:52just for the three of them.
00:48:54I'll run through the ceremony
00:48:55so there will be no surprises on the big day.
00:48:59We've got some vows we're going to say here.
00:49:01Perfect.
00:49:03This will make things more personal.
00:49:06Do you, Harry, take Meghan
00:49:08to be your lawfully wedded wife?
00:49:11If this private moment
00:49:12is a real marriage ceremony,
00:49:15then the Archbishop of Canterbury
00:49:16would have committed a crime
00:49:18officiating the wedding at St George's.
00:49:21It put the Archbishop of Canterbury,
00:49:23the most senior clergyman in Britain,
00:49:26in a rather awkward position
00:49:27because it was effectively saying,
00:49:28this guy's been part of a cover-up.
00:49:30Do you, Meghan,
00:49:32take Harry
00:49:32to be your lawfully wedded husband?
00:49:35I think it was more of that
00:49:36sort of private moment
00:49:38between the two of them
00:49:39to reaffirm their vows
00:49:41away from the crazy circus.
00:49:43I will then pronounce you
00:49:45man and wife.
00:49:47Oh, Harry.
00:49:48Harry.
00:49:51I think the Queen
00:49:55must have been furious.
00:49:56£32 million was spent
00:49:58on this wedding.
00:50:00As a member of the royal family,
00:50:01you don't sort of treat
00:50:02church matters
00:50:03as a mild inconvenience.
00:50:05You treat them
00:50:06with a certain amount of dignity.
00:50:10And it also shows
00:50:11a slightly sneering disdain
00:50:13for the British public.
00:50:14Like, we didn't really want you
00:50:15to see our wedding,
00:50:16so we had our own one.
00:50:17The Archbishop of Canterbury
00:50:19and then had to come out
00:50:19and say,
00:50:20no, it wasn't the case
00:50:22that they were married
00:50:23in Nottingham Cottage Garden.
00:50:27One of the phrases
00:50:28Meghan has used repeatedly
00:50:30is,
00:50:30my truth.
00:50:32This was her truth.
00:50:34By retelling that story
00:50:35and the kind of rewriting
00:50:36of the narrative,
00:50:38it does raise questions
00:50:40about just how much
00:50:41we can rely
00:50:43on what is said.
00:50:52Coming up,
00:50:53Meghan's alleged
00:50:54demanding behaviour
00:50:55puts her on a collision course
00:50:58with the Queen.
00:51:00In walks Her Majesty the Queen
00:51:03who quickly admonishes Meghan.
00:51:05And a perceived act
00:51:07of disrespect
00:51:07by William and Kate
00:51:09angers the newlyweds.
00:51:11That is the kind of stuff
00:51:12that was contributing
00:51:13to a rift
00:51:14that has really shaken
00:51:15the monarchy
00:51:15to its foundations.
00:51:16Today,
00:51:37Harry and Meghan live
00:51:38on America's west coast.
00:51:41This new life
00:51:42has given them freedom.
00:51:44I think Meghan likes the fact
00:51:47that she can do
00:51:47what she likes.
00:51:49They are not bound
00:51:50by any royal protocol.
00:51:51They're not working members
00:51:52of the royal family anymore.
00:51:54Why they left
00:51:55the royal family
00:51:56can be traced back
00:51:57to a catalogue
00:51:58of secret disputes
00:52:00and arguments
00:52:00around what was supposed
00:52:02to be Meghan and Harry's
00:52:04happiest day.
00:52:14after the wedding ceremony
00:52:27comes the celebration.
00:52:30The newlyweds make their way
00:52:31to St. George's Hall
00:52:32inside Windsor Castle.
00:52:36They are joined
00:52:37by 600 guests
00:52:38including George Clooney,
00:52:41Elton John
00:52:42and Okra Winfrey.
00:52:45It's then
00:52:46that Harry and Meghan
00:52:47spot something
00:52:48at a nearby table
00:52:49that lit the fuse
00:52:53on a shocking row.
00:52:55There's a British style
00:53:06and there's an American style.
00:53:08To sit next to spouses
00:53:09is the American style
00:53:12and then to sit apart
00:53:13from them
00:53:14is the British style.
00:53:17I can't believe
00:53:18they've seated us together.
00:53:22Harry and Meghan
00:53:23wanted couples
00:53:24to sit together.
00:53:25Kate and William
00:53:26felt that you don't sit
00:53:26with your partner
00:53:27and you mix people up.
00:53:30There was apparently
00:53:30conflict over
00:53:31the seating arrangements.
00:53:35Allegedly,
00:53:36William and Catherine
00:53:36were said to have
00:53:37moved the placements
00:53:38to reflect the British style.
00:53:41Much to Harry and Meghan's
00:53:42displeasure.
00:53:44Why can't they just do
00:53:45one thing that we want?
00:53:48Ignore it.
00:53:49Don't let it ruin our day.
00:53:50If you're the bride,
00:53:51if you've changed tradition
00:53:53in other areas,
00:53:55why can't other members
00:53:57of the family accept
00:53:58that things are going
00:53:59to be a little bit different?
00:54:03If you've got a wedding
00:54:04that's as scrutinized
00:54:06as Meghan was,
00:54:07you just want things
00:54:07to be the way
00:54:08you want them to be.
00:54:11William and Kate
00:54:12said it wasn't them.
00:54:13Maybe it was somebody
00:54:14else on the table.
00:54:15It's really kind of crazy
00:54:17to think that that
00:54:18is the kind of stuff
00:54:19that was contributing
00:54:20to a rift that has really
00:54:22shaken the monarchy
00:54:22to its foundations.
00:54:30Once guests are finally seated,
00:54:32it's time for the speeches.
00:54:36Harry's very good
00:54:37at public speaking.
00:54:38He knows how to crack
00:54:39a gentle joke in a speech
00:54:41and he learned that
00:54:41from his father.
00:54:42Meg,
00:54:43we make such a great team.
00:54:46I'm going to be
00:54:47Meghan's new leading man
00:54:48and I'm glad
00:54:49I passed the audition.
00:54:52Ladies and gentlemen,
00:54:55the Duchess of Sussex.
00:55:00Let's call this
00:55:01a modern fairy tale.
00:55:05We knew she was going
00:55:06to give a speech.
00:55:07This is another break
00:55:08with tradition.
00:55:09There was a girl
00:55:10from L.A.
00:55:11Some people called her
00:55:12an actress.
00:55:14I thought the fact
00:55:14that she wrote it
00:55:15in the third person
00:55:16was slightly odd.
00:55:18At the kernel
00:55:18of this whole circus
00:55:20was two people
00:55:21who fell in love.
00:55:22And there was
00:55:23a guy from London.
00:55:24Some people called him
00:55:26a prince.
00:55:29The prince and the princess
00:55:31fairy tale element
00:55:32was obviously
00:55:33the narrative
00:55:34that she enjoyed
00:55:35and wanted to get across.
00:55:36All of those people
00:55:37didn't fully get it.
00:55:39Because this is
00:55:40the love story
00:55:41of a boy and a girl
00:55:42who were meant
00:55:43to be together.
00:55:45I can only imagine
00:55:46what the British people
00:55:47in that wedding reception
00:55:48would have made of that
00:55:49because I'm afraid
00:55:49we Brits,
00:55:50we can't stomach
00:55:51that kind of Americanism.
00:55:53You don't normally
00:55:54get royal brides
00:55:55making speeches
00:55:56but the great thing
00:55:57about that day
00:55:58was it was a sense
00:55:59of observing
00:56:00all the traditions
00:56:01that people love
00:56:01about a royal wedding.
00:56:02But there was definitely
00:56:03a sense of it
00:56:04being different
00:56:06and that was
00:56:07a good thing.
00:56:07at the reception
00:56:14a lavish meal
00:56:15is served
00:56:16including smoked salmon
00:56:18canapes
00:56:18and garden pea
00:56:20panna cotta.
00:56:20but the wedding food
00:56:27has reportedly
00:56:28been the cause
00:56:29of a major falling out
00:56:30within the royal family.
00:56:32Tasting the food
00:56:33is all part of the build up
00:56:35to a wedding.
00:56:36She goes to meet
00:56:37the palace chefs
00:56:38and tastes
00:56:39some of the dishes.
00:56:41Meghan,
00:56:42a huge foodie
00:56:43and this would have been
00:56:45something she was
00:56:45very much looking forward to.
00:56:47She gets very upset
00:56:52about this
00:56:53and says
00:56:53This is supposed to be
00:56:55vegan
00:56:55and macrobiotic.
00:56:57And an exchange
00:56:58apparently occurs.
00:57:00I said these dishes
00:57:01had to be vegan.
00:57:02This isn't, is it?
00:57:04No, Miss Markle.
00:57:08In walks
00:57:09Her Majesty the Queen
00:57:10who quickly
00:57:12admonishes Meghan
00:57:13and says
00:57:13Meghan,
00:57:15in this family
00:57:16we do not speak
00:57:17to people like that.
00:57:19Yes, ma'am.
00:57:22Manners
00:57:23were everything
00:57:24to the late Queen
00:57:26and if she felt
00:57:27that somebody
00:57:27was not behaving appropriately
00:57:29I think
00:57:30she would have been
00:57:31very quick
00:57:31to correct them.
00:57:33Now why don't you
00:57:34show me
00:57:34what dishes
00:57:35we have here?
00:57:37Of course, ma'am.
00:57:39Any situation
00:57:40where the Queen
00:57:40is required to come
00:57:41and give somebody
00:57:41a dressing down
00:57:42is a bit of a disaster.
00:57:44The rest of us
00:57:45would have been terrified
00:57:46to have this conversation
00:57:47with the Queen.
00:57:48I get the sense
00:57:48that for Meghan
00:57:49it was water off
00:57:49a duck's back.
00:57:50She didn't quake
00:57:51in her booze.
00:57:53If you grow up
00:57:54as a member
00:57:55of the royal family
00:57:56you learn
00:57:57to be polite
00:57:57to your staff.
00:58:12after a day
00:58:13of celebration
00:58:14there is one last
00:58:15public appearance
00:58:16for Harry and Meghan.
00:58:21It looks like
00:58:22something from
00:58:22a Bond movie.
00:58:25You've got a global audience
00:58:27watching this.
00:58:28The Americans
00:58:29are lapping this up.
00:58:31I mean this is
00:58:31brand Britain
00:58:32at its very best.
00:58:34The happy couple
00:58:35drive off
00:58:36into what many assume
00:58:38will be a bright
00:58:39royal future.
00:58:41It all looked
00:58:42as if it was going
00:58:43to be a great new chapter
00:58:44in the royal story.
00:58:48They were seen
00:58:49as the future
00:58:49of the royal family
00:58:50those two
00:58:51supporting William
00:58:52and Kate
00:58:52going forward
00:58:53for decades to come.
00:58:55The public
00:58:56didn't know
00:58:56at the time
00:58:57that the arguments
00:58:58around the wedding
00:58:59are going to lead
00:59:00to this royal fairy tale
00:59:02coming to a sudden end.
00:59:04Coming up
00:59:12Harry and Meghan's
00:59:13honeymoon
00:59:14is short-lived.
00:59:16Such was the level
00:59:17of betrayal.
00:59:19And seven years
00:59:20after their wedding
00:59:21is there about
00:59:22to be a family
00:59:23reconciliation?
00:59:25Prince Harry's aides
00:59:26had flown over
00:59:26from the US
00:59:27and it was a
00:59:28peace summit.
00:59:34Harry and Meghan
00:59:50return from
00:59:50a two-week honeymoon
00:59:52in the Mediterranean.
00:59:53With so much
00:59:54bad feeling
00:59:55in the aftermath
00:59:56of their big day
00:59:57they are summoned
00:59:58to a crisis meeting
01:00:00with William
01:00:01and Kate.
01:00:02There was the meeting
01:00:03at Kensington Palace
01:00:04between the two couples
01:00:06the Sussexes
01:00:07and the Cambridges
01:00:08to try and repair
01:00:10some of the damage
01:00:12that had been done.
01:00:17You changed
01:00:18the seating arrangements
01:00:19at our wedding.
01:00:22The way you talk
01:00:23to people
01:00:24has become a problem.
01:00:26But it wasn't to be.
01:00:28There was no repairing
01:00:30this fractured relationship.
01:00:32In fact
01:00:32the divide just got bigger
01:00:34and bigger.
01:00:35Just nine months
01:00:36after Harry and Meghan's
01:00:38divisive wedding
01:00:39there's breaking news.
01:00:41The fabulous four
01:00:42no more.
01:00:43Meghan and Harry
01:00:44officially cutting ties
01:00:45with William and Kate.
01:00:47The soon-to-be parents
01:00:48breaking away
01:00:49from the joint operation
01:00:50they currently share.
01:00:51Now setting up
01:00:52their own royal household
01:00:53in Buckingham Palace.
01:00:55A complete separate
01:00:56home base
01:00:56for their staff
01:00:57and offices.
01:00:58The disagreements
01:00:59many of which
01:01:00surfaced during
01:01:01the wedding planning
01:01:02continued into
01:01:03their new married life.
01:01:13Then
01:01:1319 months
01:01:15after their wedding
01:01:16there's another announcement.
01:01:19Harry and Meghan
01:01:20will split
01:01:21from the royal family.
01:01:23A deal has been agreed
01:01:26on the future
01:01:26of the Duke and Duchess
01:01:27of Sussex
01:01:28who are to step down
01:01:29as working royals
01:01:30in the spring.
01:01:31Buckingham Palace
01:01:32confirmed on Saturday
01:01:33that Prince Harry
01:01:34and his wife Meghan
01:01:35will no longer receive
01:01:36public funds.
01:01:37They won't use
01:01:38their royal titles either.
01:01:40Looking back
01:01:43at Harry and Meghan's
01:01:44wedding in 2018
01:01:46seeing the hope
01:01:47that the event
01:01:48heralded for so many people
01:01:50it is then surprising
01:01:51to think that
01:01:52just two years later
01:01:53marks their exit
01:01:55from the royal family.
01:01:56This split
01:01:57becomes more acrimonious
01:01:59once Harry and Meghan
01:02:01relocate to America
01:02:02and decide
01:02:03to sell their story.
01:02:06And scores are settled
01:02:07from wedding fallouts.
01:02:10You say the narrative
01:02:11with Kate
01:02:11it didn't happen.
01:02:12So specifically
01:02:13did you make Kate cry?
01:02:16No.
01:02:18So where did that come from?
01:02:24Was there a situation
01:02:25where she might have cried
01:02:26or she could have cried?
01:02:27No, no.
01:02:28The reverse happened.
01:02:29Things were obviously
01:02:29difficult and strained enough
01:02:32when Harry and Meghan
01:02:33left.
01:02:34But afterwards
01:02:35by giving interviews
01:02:37to Oprah
01:02:38a six-part
01:02:40Netflix documentary series
01:02:42by Spare
01:02:45that has opened up
01:02:47this chasm.
01:02:49It is now so wide
01:02:50that it is hard to see
01:02:52how that bridge
01:02:53can be built easily.
01:02:54I think William and Kate
01:02:57feel more strongly
01:02:58about all these
01:02:58indiscretions.
01:03:00Such was the level
01:03:00of betrayal
01:03:01that they felt.
01:03:03These personal stories
01:03:04had been told
01:03:05for commercial gain.
01:03:10In August 2025,
01:03:13Meghan and Harry
01:03:14announce a new deal
01:03:15with Netflix
01:03:16meaning more
01:03:17damaging royal stories
01:03:19might be released
01:03:20in the future.
01:03:21The divisions
01:03:30that stem back
01:03:31to the wedding
01:03:32have led to Harry
01:03:33and Meghan
01:03:34living in America
01:03:35and estranged
01:03:36from the royal family.
01:03:38But that
01:03:39might be about
01:03:40to change.
01:03:43Seven years
01:03:44after the wedding,
01:03:46these pictures
01:03:47capture a secret meeting
01:03:49taking place.
01:03:51My story revealed
01:03:52that Prince Harry's aides
01:03:54had flown over
01:03:55from the US
01:03:56to meet with the King's
01:03:57senior communications aide.
01:04:00Those photos
01:04:00were taken on a balcony.
01:04:02It was a heatwave.
01:04:03The balcony was
01:04:04overlooking a public park,
01:04:06Green Park,
01:04:07and the photographer
01:04:08got brilliant,
01:04:09brilliant photos
01:04:09and, you know,
01:04:11a lot of people
01:04:12thought they were staged.
01:04:13They weren't staged,
01:04:14you know,
01:04:14they weren't,
01:04:15but it was a fantastic,
01:04:17amazing coincidence
01:04:17that they went onto
01:04:18the balcony
01:04:19for ten minutes
01:04:19and that balcony
01:04:21was in the full view
01:04:22of the general public.
01:04:24And it was a peace summit,
01:04:25that's what it was labelled
01:04:26as a peace summit.
01:04:28And I think the meeting
01:04:29went really well.
01:04:30It does suggest
01:04:31that if Harry
01:04:33stays quiet,
01:04:36in other words,
01:04:36if he manages
01:04:37to keep
01:04:39confidences
01:04:40confident,
01:04:41then there's
01:04:42a possibility
01:04:43that the King
01:04:44might agree
01:04:45to open up
01:04:46a channel of communication
01:04:47with him again.
01:04:49But while the King
01:04:50shows a willingness
01:04:51to start talks,
01:04:53William
01:04:53has not engaged.
01:04:56William's got a big job
01:04:57to do,
01:04:58preparing to be King.
01:05:00I think he feels despair.
01:05:02He feels real sadness
01:05:03about what has happened.
01:05:05and anger,
01:05:07that Harry could have done this
01:05:10to not just him,
01:05:12but to the whole royal family.
01:05:15It's going to take a lot
01:05:16to forgive and forget.
01:05:18I think if everything
01:05:26had been fine
01:05:27behind the scenes,
01:05:29the little tensions
01:05:30connected to the wedding
01:05:31probably wouldn't have
01:05:32been as big as they
01:05:33were.
01:05:34But it was a
01:05:34snowball effect
01:05:36of everything going wrong
01:05:37with the planning
01:05:38and the staff
01:05:39being disgruntled
01:05:40and the way that
01:05:41Meghan and Harry
01:05:42were conducting themselves.
01:05:43It got to the point
01:05:44where there was no return.
01:05:45I don't think
01:05:47there could have been
01:05:48a wedding that had
01:05:49quite so many dramas.
01:05:51There's always something
01:05:52that goes a bit wrong.
01:05:53But I think on the
01:05:54Harry and Meghan front,
01:05:55it was a different magnitude.
