00:00We've got two celebs for the price of one, haven't we?
00:01Oh dear.
00:02Because he's helping more of our best-loved celebrities...
00:05Hello!
00:06Hey!
00:07Tuck your shirt in.
00:09Yeah, well, I've been working.
00:10...turn their belongings into cold, hard cash.
00:13Come on!
00:14This is my grandma's old wireless.
00:17He visits their magnificent homes...
00:19It's not often you come to somebody who has a window.
00:22...seeking out collectibles...
00:24Yeah, this looks nice.
00:25What do you think of this?
00:27...keepsakes from their careers...
00:29Please don't drop them.
00:30Those are staying.
00:31I was just looking.
00:32...and stuff they no longer need...
00:34We have this fridge here.
00:35Yeah, OK.
00:36...to sell back at his auction house...
00:38Oh, wow!
00:40This is like an Aladdin's cave for me.
00:43Well, it looks fantastic here.
00:44...turning their possessions...
00:465,100.
00:47Like it.
00:48...into piles of money.
00:51Boom!
00:59Good afternoon, the Yorkshire auction house.
01:04Look at that.
01:05Looks like it's never been out of the box.
01:08Right, Ewan, I hope you're excited for today, because I am.
01:11We're going all the way to Surrey to see a bit of a legend, massive pop star.
01:15Huge.
01:15Claire from Steps.
01:17Oh, Steps!
01:18Steps, yeah.
01:195, 6, 7, 8.
01:21Tragedy!
01:22In the halcyon days of late 90s pop, no one shone brighter than high-energy hitmakers Steps.
01:29With Claire Richards playing a starring role, four number-one albums and 22 million records shifted worldwide,
01:37Claire and the gang have been bringing the party to packed-out arenas for nearly three decades, whether you like it or not.
01:4528 years later, we're still here.
01:48Still annoying people, which is fabulous.
01:52They were huge back in the day.
01:5590s, early noughties, it'll be.
01:57I'd have been a toddler.
02:00Yeah.
02:02Careful, Ewan, you've got five hours to Surrey.
02:05Have you practiced your moves?
02:07Um, no.
02:09No, OK.
02:10I'll leave the dancing to you.
02:11I'll watch.
02:12An horrific thought.
02:14No offence, Angus, you were born to be an auctioneer.
02:17Claire, on the other hand...
02:19When I was young, I wanted to be a pastry chef for a while because I liked to cook.
02:23Then I decided I was going to be a PE teacher.
02:27Because I like sport, which is an absolute joke.
02:31I would have been the most useless PE teacher in the world.
02:33And then once I kind of had discovered that I could sing, I did my A-levels and I'd sent
02:41off for a few auditions and Steps was the only one that I got back.
02:45So I went on the 7th of May, 1997.
02:49And myself, Faye and Lee were found at that audition.
02:52H and Lisa were already in the band.
02:54We worked hard in those first few months, but we did it and we slogged it and it paid off.
02:59And it's still paying off, with the group's 2022 Greatest Hits album reaching the number
03:05one spot exactly 25 years on from their first chart topper.
03:11I'm very happy to keep going at the moment.
03:14But we'll see.
03:15I can't imagine myself doing 5, 6, 7, 8 in my 70s, but you never know.
03:21Claire's pad is this modern five-bed detached home that she shares with her husband and two
03:27teenage children.
03:28The playroom is one of those rooms in this house that we obviously don't need anymore.
03:33My kids are 15 and 18, so part of the reason why I'm doing this is to get rid of as much
03:39as possible from that room and kind of raise a little bit of money to be able to make it
03:46into what I want.
03:47I haven't quite decided what that's going to be yet.
03:51There you go, saviour of British pop.
03:55Well, that's going me wrong.
03:56I'm excited you.
03:57Yeah.
03:57It's good.
03:59I have got a bit of a surprise for Angus.
04:02It's a bit of stepped history, I would say.
04:05Oh, Claire, you are a terrible tease.
04:09Hello.
04:10Hi.
04:10How are we doing?
04:11Welcome.
04:12I'm good.
04:12How are you?
04:13Really well.
04:13Come in.
04:14Well, it's absolutely great to be here, and how is it we can help?
04:21I have a lot of stuff that I don't need anymore and that I've been holding on to for years
04:26and years and years, so it's time for a little bit of a refresh.
04:29All around the house, are we, or...?
04:31We're looking all over the house, but let me show you something.
04:34Okay.
04:34Well, Ewan, do you want to sort the van out?
04:35Yeah, yeah.
04:35We'll have a look.
04:36Here we go.
04:39Okay.
04:40Wow.
04:40Is this the playroom?
04:41This is the dumping ground, yeah.
04:43Go on, then.
04:43What's to go out of here?
04:44Okay.
04:45So, I guess the first things are the lamps.
04:47Fine.
04:48That one can go.
04:49This one, actually, I've had this for a long time, so I bought my first house in 2001.
04:56I was 23, I think.
04:58It must have been a challenge, that young and sort of getting that success, was it?
05:02I think it's only when you step away from it for a while that you realise what a struggle
05:07it kind of was, and there was this perception that it was going to be such a short-lived thing
05:14that you had to rinse it for absolutely...
05:17A hundred miles an hour.
05:18Absolutely, and don't miss any opportunity.
05:20It was exciting.
05:21So, lights to go.
05:23Yes.
05:23There are two modern studio-style floor lamps up for grabs, which could make up to £50
05:28each.
05:30The pink case, that is one of two suitcases that I was given to go into the Big Brother
05:35house with.
05:36I've kept hold of it for all these years, for 12 years, and I've never used them.
05:41So, we've got Big Brother cases.
05:42Yep.
05:43We've got lamps.
05:43Are you just happy for me to have a bit of a rummage, see what I can come up with?
05:47Yeah.
05:48You have a little look around, help yourself.
05:50I'll leave you to it.
05:50Right.
05:53Claire's a bit of an icon, isn't she?
05:54And she is so lovely.
05:57I don't think there's going to be loads of items, but it's great just to come and meet
06:01her.
06:01You know, I was in my teens when they're at their height, and yeah, I know a few of the
06:07songs.
06:08Please don't sing, Angus.
06:10That really would be a tragedy.
06:12Just see if you can find any smash hits among this lot.
06:16This looks good.
06:17Nice, the sort of, almost like a tennis bracelet type necklace.
06:23So, the earrings are actually 18 carat gold.
06:26So, the fact that it's in 18 carat would suggest that the stones are diamond.
06:31We could be several hundred, just depends.
06:34We'll need to test it.
06:35Exciting start.
06:36One for the jewellery experts back at base.
06:39Put that safe on the van.
06:42Time to hustle the muscle.
06:43Right.
06:44A few bits to get out of here, Ewan.
06:46This, that's her suitcase that she took on to Big Brother.
06:49The suitcases still have the original celebrity Big Brother tags on, from when she took part
06:55in 2013.
06:57Great, right, okay.
06:58We'll get these loaded up.
07:00All right.
07:00Hop to it, Ewan.
07:01Remember, Big Brother is always watching.
07:08What?
07:10Crikey.
07:11Just one or two gold discs, then?
07:13Aha!
07:14Found your achievement room.
07:16Wow.
07:17I know, it's a lot, isn't it?
07:19Is there one gig that really stands out for you?
07:22I got to support Celine Dion in Hyde Park.
07:26Pretty epic, really.
07:28And there were thousands of people in Hyde Park that day.
07:31And it was terrifying, but also one of the most amazing things.
07:36Oh!
07:37Looks like Dave is arriving.
07:39Dave?
07:40I've got a surprise for you.
07:41This is something that I haven't told you about.
07:43And you're probably not going to be expecting it, but come and have a look.
07:47Aha!
07:48Finally, it's time for the big reveal.
07:51Right, follow me.
07:52Right, okay.
07:53You've got me intrigued, though.
07:55Oh, Ewan.
07:55I don't suppose H is hiding in there, is he?
07:58Don't tell me you've got life-size statues of all the band members of Steps.
08:01Oh, so...
08:03What?
08:04This is quite special, actually.
08:06So, on the last Steps tour, we had a set and we had a backdrop,
08:10and we had five letters, obviously, that spell out Steps.
08:14Steps.
08:14And they light up.
08:16These eight-foot-tall LED letters were used on Steps' 2021 UK Arena Tour.
08:24Tragedy?
08:24Yeah.
08:25Feelings gone and you can't go on.
08:28It's a tragedy.
08:29Simple as that.
08:30Well, we don't want any tragedies, do we?
08:31No, we don't.
08:31Please don't drop them.
08:32Well, me and Ewan will get these on the van.
08:34I'm going to leave you to it.
08:36I'd love to help, but I'm not going to.
08:38If Angus finds the right buyer, these letters could make up to two grand at auction.
08:44A bit different from the usual pick-up.
08:46And if not, he could just rearrange them and flog them to a pet shop.
08:50Oop!
08:51Watch that step, Ewan.
08:53Any money that the auction raises from selling those is going to go to charity.
08:58There's a charity called Not A Phase, which supports the young trans community.
09:02It's something that we felt really strongly about,
09:04and so I really, really hope they do well.
09:07Oh, wow.
09:09Ewan?
09:10Yeah?
09:12Look at this.
09:14Wow.
09:15This is her husband's.
09:16Oh, is it?
09:17OK, right.
09:18Is there anything in here that can actually go?
09:20Yeah.
09:21OK.
09:22One horsepower engine, this.
09:24I mean, it's not quite a Harley or a Triumph,
09:28but very traditional, classic rocking horse.
09:31Claire's bespoke modern rocker
09:33is from defunct luxury rocking horse company Suffolk.
09:37We've sold a lot of rocking horses over the years.
09:39Some early ones can make him to the thousands,
09:41but one like this, two to four hundred, something like that, I would have thought.
09:45Anyway, should we get it on the van?
09:46Right.
09:46Oh, I've got the back end.
09:47I'll get kicked, so that's all right.
09:49Yeah, never stand behind at all.
09:50Well, it's going all right.
09:53You know, not a huge load.
09:54Mixture of items.
09:55We've got various bits of jewellery, luggage, you know, bit of all sorts.
09:59Ewan's in for a real treat when we go home this afternoon,
10:02because I've got Greatest Hits downloaded.
10:04We're going to be learning all the tracks, educate him.
10:07I think he's going to be a big fan by the time we get to Yorkshire.
10:09Ewan seems more Mumford and Sons than Steps, Angus,
10:12so good luck with that.
10:14Even so, he's putting in a serious shift today, clearing Claire's playroom.
10:19So while he does that...
10:21These are very, um...
10:22Why don't you put your feet up?
10:24A little bit flash, aren't they?
10:25These are modern chairs in the style of sort of late 18th, early 19th century French armchair.
10:33Upholstered seat, back and arms.
10:35So quite a comfy chair.
10:37The style of this sort of thing's really gone off.
10:41You know, they're not going to do a huge amount, the pair of them.
10:4330, 40 pounds, the pair, maybe.
10:45But, adding the fact, they're Claire Richards' chairs.
10:49I mean, they could do 5, 6, 7, 8, 2 pounds.
10:53It's a step song.
10:56I thought it was quite good, that, actually.
10:59With Angus's joke book safely packed away,
11:02along with all of Claire's things,
11:05the van is loaded up...
11:06Right, that's the last of it.
11:08Wonderful.
11:09..and ready for the long drive home.
11:13All done. All done.
11:15Yeah.
11:15How are we feeling now things are going?
11:17I feel quite good, actually.
11:19Yeah.
11:19I'm excited to see what happens with them now.
11:21Hopefully, there's some massive fans out there
11:24that want giant eight-foot step lights.
11:28Well, let's hope so.
11:29There's got to be somebody.
11:30It's been an absolute pleasure.
11:32It's been lovely to meet you.
11:33Yeah, I look forward to seeing you in Yorkshire.
11:34Yes.
11:35Take care. See you.
11:37Thank you so much for coming.
11:38Oh, no, thank you.
11:39Looking forward to welcoming her to the salary match.
11:42I think she's going to enjoy it.
11:43I think she'll get into the spirit of it.
11:44And I just need to find a home for those huge lights.
11:48But we'd like a challenge.
11:50A challenge you can step up to, Angus.
11:53You ready?
11:54Well, you're doing the driving.
11:55Five, six, seven, eight.
11:57Let's go.
11:58Look out, Kirby Moorside.
11:59A sprinkling of pop stardust is en route.
12:03Hey, are you all right, Jack?
12:16Yeah, not bad.
12:18Claire's things have arrived safely at the auction house.
12:22Now, we've actually got the back of their stage set.
12:26Steps in lights.
12:27The illuminated letters are just five of more than 80 individual items
12:33that'll need to be researched and popped in the catalogue before the auction.
12:38Excellent. Thanks, Jack.
12:39No worries.
12:48That's a nice bit of bling.
12:49A bit of bling.
12:50Bit of bling.
12:51Not sure I want Claire Richards to hear you say that.
12:54It's Claire's 18-carat gold necklace.
12:56Do you have any idea what these stones are?
12:59Are they sapphires?
13:00They are sapphires, yeah.
13:02Quite a light sapphire, actually.
13:04Sapphires are made from corundum,
13:07the second hardest mineral after diamond.
13:09They come in all different colours,
13:11depending on other elements within them.
13:13The purple in Claire's likely comes from the metal vanadium.
13:17But there are more jewels in this, by the looks of it.
13:20There's over 200 diamonds around here.
13:22Wowee! Big bucks then, Ewan.
13:24In terms of value, I mean, the sapphires and the diamonds
13:28mean this is not going to be a cheap item.
13:30I think it should comfortably do £1,000 plus.
13:33Claire also had a pair of 18-carat white gold hoop earrings
13:37set with sapphires, which will be offered as a separate lot.
13:41Well, I'd better get back to work.
13:42I'll see you later.
13:43I'll see you later.
13:49Hi, Charlotte.
13:51Hi, Charlotte.
13:52Among the hole from Claire's were three leather bags
13:55by luxury Somerset-based fashion house, Mulberry.
13:58Mulberry is just one of those, like,
14:00really quintessentially iconic English brands.
14:03I think it's gone through phases
14:04of being really, really popular, hasn't it?
14:05And Mulberry, maybe at the moment, isn't so up.
14:09I've got a Mulberry bag.
14:10And one thing I will say about it is
14:12the quality's really, really good.
14:13Leather, and they're made in the UK.
14:15So it's very durable.
14:16I spent quite a lot of money on it at the time,
14:18and I'm not sure it's probably worth that much now.
14:21Yeah.
14:21Because I brought it new.
14:22And I think that's the thing with handbags, isn't it?
14:24They often depreciate in value.
14:26We'll put them all individually.
14:28Yeah, yeah.
14:29So we've got a carry case here,
14:31a small handbag here,
14:32and then a duffel bag here.
14:35If these weren't retail,
14:36they'd be over £1,000 easily.
14:38Yeah.
14:38So auction is where it's at,
14:40because I think somebody's going to get a bargain, aren't they?
14:42Exactly.
14:51Oh, Claire, how are you doing? You all right?
14:53How are you?
14:53Go for a hug.
14:54Are you all right?
14:55Yeah, good. How are you feeling?
14:56I'm excited.
14:57The big thing is your signs.
14:59Yes.
15:00I'm really interested and intrigued
15:02to see whether anybody is good.
15:04I mean, they're amazing,
15:05but you've got to have somewhere for them, haven't you?
15:08Absolutely.
15:08Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed.
15:10Go on, let's go have a look round.
15:12I'll catch up with you in a bit.
15:16Oh, my goodness.
15:18This is it.
15:20She's got some nice bits.
15:21We should get some good results.
15:23Yeah, I'm just excited to see how it goes.
15:24God, I really hope someone buys these today.
15:26A lot of memories in these letters.
15:28Any money we make from it is going to a really good charity,
15:31so I'm keeping everything crossed.
15:35The signs, I mean, they're amazing.
15:37It'd be a tragedy if they didn't sell.
15:39This is the rocking horse we bought when the kids were little.
15:42We had that in their playroom for a long time,
15:44but they don't need it any more.
15:46They're too big.
15:47She's got a few reserves on.
15:49That's fine.
15:50Do you know what?
15:50I think it's just nervous.
15:51She hasn't done it before,
15:52so I think when the sale gets going, she'll be fine.
15:55I was a bit worried about whether things are going to sell,
15:57but actually, after seeing Angus,
15:59he did reassure me a little bit.
16:00He thinks it's going to be OK,
16:02so hopefully that means there's been interest already.
16:05You just never know, do you?
16:07Just hope it goes well.
16:09It may not exactly be Wembley Arena,
16:12but there's still a fair few bums on seats today.
16:15Hard to tell if they're Steps,
16:17Boys Zone or Spice Girls fans, though.
16:20Internet bids will be monitored by Emma and Heather,
16:22so as Angus steps up to the rostrum
16:25with dreams of reaching the top of the Pops for Claire's things,
16:29it's showtime!
16:32Right, ladies and gentlemen,
16:35we're very pleased to be so embarrassed.
16:37There we go.
16:38Claire from Steps!
16:40Woo!
16:43That's the biggest round of applause we've had all week.
16:46Angus is kicking off with a couple of pieces
16:48of iconic yet practical celeb memorabilia.
16:52I bet nobody else has a pair of these.
16:54It's a matching pair of pink celebrity Big Brother suitcases.
16:58These are the actual ones you went into Big Brother with, aren't they?
17:01Yes.
17:02How was that?
17:03It's a lot more boring than people think it is.
17:05There's nothing to do.
17:07These aren't boring.
17:08Look at them.
17:08They're brilliant.
17:09There we go.
17:09They've still got their Big Brother tags on them there.
17:11Where should we be for this?
17:13£50.
17:13They've got to be worth 50, surely.
17:15The Big Brother suitcases.
17:1750 bid.
17:17There we go.
17:18£50 it is.
17:19Then at 50 it is.
17:20Then at 50.
17:20Five, five, five.
17:2155, it's for the pair of them.
17:23At 55.
17:2460.
17:24At 60 pounds it is then.
17:26At 60.
17:26We're all done.
17:27At 60 pounds.
17:29From the Big Brother house to a house in York.
17:33They're very roomy.
17:34Very roomy.
17:35You can get a lot in them.
17:36Yes, you can.
17:37Jewellery next and it's those 18 carat white gold hoop earrings with sapphires.
17:43These are nice, aren't they?
17:44These are very nice.
17:45Yes, they are.
17:46Very fashionable.
17:47I've got 720, 740.
17:49We're at two.
17:49It's been totting up while we've been speaking.
17:517.60.
17:52That's £760.
17:53And bid then.
17:54That's £760 it is.
17:55I said it would be all right.
17:57You were worried you weren't going to sell a thing, weren't you?
17:59That's £760 it is.
18:00Then we're all done.
18:01Final call selling them at £760.
18:04Now that's more like it.
18:08This is very exciting.
18:10Now whoever bought those earrings will surely want the sapphire and diamond necklace to go with it.
18:17This is nice.
18:18There we go.
18:18We've got a bit of international interest on this.
18:20My top bid comes at £1450.
18:22At £1450 it is then.
18:24At £1450.
18:26£1500.
18:26Fresh bid at £1500.
18:28Commission's out.
18:29At £1500 it is then at £1500.
18:31We've all done the set.
18:32Staying together at £1500.
18:34Yep, it's been snapped up by the same bidder.
18:40I can't go.
18:41It's all right this auction, Malark, isn't it?
18:42It's really good.
18:43I'm going to go and find some more stuff when I get home.
18:46It's time for those swanky mulberry bags which Claire has decided to put reserves on.
18:52First is the black and brown leather duffel with a reserve price of £350.
18:58Travelled the world on all the world tours.
19:00It has.
19:01From Scarborough to...
19:02Cardiff.
19:03Yeah, Cardiff.
19:03There we go.
19:04Ah, right.
19:05Where should we?
19:05£300, aren't we?
19:06Lovely mulberry bag there.
19:07£300, £300, £320, £340, £360, anywhere is it now?
19:10I'll take £50 if you like.
19:12£340 at £340.
19:13At just £10 shy of the reserve, Angus shuts down the sale and when the carry case with a £350 reserve comes up next...
19:25At £340, is it now?
19:26At £340, is it now?
19:27At £340, is it now?
19:27At £340, is it now?
19:27At £340, is it now?
19:27Followed by the handbag with a reserve of £140.
19:32At £150, they both also fall slightly short.
19:39I know.
19:39I know.
19:41Angus needs to get things rocking again.
19:43So what's he putting his money on?
19:46Claire's rocking horse.
19:47And we're off.
19:50£150, £160, £170, £180, £190, £200, £210, £220, £240, £250, at £250, fresh bid at £260, it is then £260, it is then £270, fresh bid.
20:00£280, is it now?
20:01At £280, it is then at £280.
20:03We're all done.
20:04I'm going to call up to £290, just in time.
20:07Might as well round it up to £300.
20:08Nice round number, isn't it?
20:10£300 bid at £300, it is.
20:12At £300, gavel up at £320.
20:14£320.
20:15That's been ridden round the whole country as well.
20:17Ridden round the whole country?
20:19You didn't get very far though, did you?
20:22It's alright, keep talking, it's working, it's going up.
20:24At £360, don't miss out for the famous rocking horse.
20:28At £360, gavels up at £360.
20:33Time to bid farewell to the family filly.
20:36Bye, Ralph.
20:39There's more to go, Claire, as over the next quarter of an hour,
20:4321 more lots come under Angus's gavel, including...
20:48..the two modern studio-style floor lamps...
20:53We're all done at £60.
20:55..the silver upholstered French-style armchairs and...
21:00At £740.
21:02..a white metal eternity ring set with a baguette-cut diamond.
21:09My goodness me.
21:10No prizes for getting what Angus has saved for the grand finale.
21:16Oh, ladies and gentlemen.
21:18Oh.
21:19Ready? We're going to light up the stage.
21:22Hey! Look at that!
21:24Full working order.
21:26Right, while we've been talking, we started a thousand...
21:28..commissioned bid of 2,000's already out.
21:30We're at 2,150.
21:32At 2,150 for Steps History.
21:35At 2-2, is it now?
21:37We're at 2,150 for the signs.
21:40The illuminated Steps lights.
21:42This is a one-off.
21:43You can't get...
21:43Where are you going to get some of these?
21:45Final call, then.
21:46We're going to sell it.
21:47Five, six, seven, eight.
21:48Oh!
21:49I know, it's tragedy, isn't it?
21:50Yeah.
21:51We have to be done.
21:52All done!
21:54Now that's what I call a showstopper.
21:59That's amazing.
22:02Breathe.
22:03We're done.
22:03I need a cup of tea.
22:05After finishing the auction on such a high note,
22:08I wonder what pop-tastic total Angus has in store for the Encore.
22:22There he is.
22:23Hey, are you all right?
22:24That was exciting, wasn't it?
22:25Yeah!
22:26And a couple of bits.
22:27OK, I think a couple of bags didn't get away,
22:28but everything else, all the jewellery, I mean, did all right?
22:32The big law, the signs.
22:33I thought I was going to start crying when that went,
22:35but I was so happy that someone's bought them
22:38and they're actually going to get a life beyond...
22:41Oh, look, I'm getting all a bit choked up.
22:43Oh!
22:44I know, I'm going to get a life beyond...
22:46Cos when you stop using stuff like that,
22:47it just kind of gets binned.
22:49So, yeah, thank you.
22:51You'll be taking home £6,365.
22:55Oh, my God!
22:57Oh, my God!
22:58Yeah, I've just been to run.
22:59There you go.
23:01Blimey!
23:01That was all right, wasn't it?
23:03Yeah!
23:03I might be able to get a new bathroom.
23:06Oh, bless you!
23:09Yay!
23:11I've got a big smile on my face.
23:12I feel a little bit relieved that things sold.
23:16I feel a bit shocked, actually.
23:20The step signs.
23:21That was always going to be the tricky one,
23:22would they or wouldn't they?
23:23But they've gone.
23:25That's amazing!
23:26She's very happy.
23:27I'm very happy.
23:28And I think she's enjoyed her first auction experience.
23:31I'm going to go home and have another rummage.
23:41All right, Nick, you're in for a nice day out today.
23:43All right, tell me where we're going.
23:45We're off to the Yorkshire Dales.
23:46Nice.
23:47Yeah, lovely part of the world, Swelldale.
23:49Who do you think might live in Swelldale?
23:51It's got to be some sort of farming-related celebrity, maybe.
23:54Yeah, very well known.
23:56The Yorkshire...
23:57The Shepherdess.
23:58Shepherdess, Amanda Rowan.
24:00Yeah.
24:00Wow.
24:02Amanda Owen, better known as the Yorkshire Shepherdess,
24:06and star of hit shows like Our Yorkshire Farm,
24:09Our Farm Next Door, and loads more.
24:12She's also a best-selling author
24:14who, over the past two decades,
24:16has somehow found time to run a 2,000-acre farm
24:20with 900 sheep and 20 cows,
24:23not to mention raising nine children in the process.
24:27Now that's multitasking.
24:29I spend every day saying, where is everything?
24:32Where are the children?
24:33Where are the animals?
24:34Everything is scattered to the four winds here.
24:37Amanda's gorgeous 300-year-old home,
24:40plus its dozens of outbuildings,
24:42sits atop the Swelldale Valley,
24:44overlooking the rolling green meadows
24:47and dry stone walls
24:48of the magnificent and vast Yorkshire Dales National Park.
24:54We're really in the rural backwaters.
24:56Nothing works out here.
24:58Every day is a challenge.
24:59Every day differs.
25:01And...
25:02..it's exciting.
25:05Just like the landscape outside,
25:07it looks like Amanda's home oozes history too.
25:10I often get complimented on the house,
25:15not because it's perfect, obviously.
25:17People say they feel at home here.
25:20It's a place that feels like it's a little bit stuck
25:22in the olden days.
25:25Hear that, Angus?
25:26She's a woman after your own heart.
25:29There's lots of things that I'd like him to look at.
25:31I am a bit of a hoarder.
25:32I think at the last count we had 42 outbuildings.
25:36And over time,
25:39they have kind of accumulated things,
25:42so I'm quite happy for all of that stuff to go.
25:45It strikes me as the sort of person
25:46who would have some pretty eclectic stuff.
25:48Yeah.
25:49I'm really looking forward to it.
25:51We've got all manner of things,
25:53so it can have a root about amongst it all.
25:58Watch the laundry.
25:59Hello!
26:00Hey, Angus!
26:01Yes.
26:02Brought Nick with me as well.
26:03And some sunshine.
26:04Thought you might be up up the hills,
26:05but we've found you.
26:06No, I've just finished feeding the pet lambs.
26:08It's a bit of a quieter time of year,
26:09so it's a good time of year
26:10to have a little nosy and poke about amongst my stuff.
26:14Oh, come on in!
26:15Come on in!
26:15Yeah, thank you.
26:16Come on in!
26:18Come on through.
26:19Come on, don't fall over anything.
26:21It's like an obstacle course.
26:23It's how you imagine a Dale's farm to be.
26:25The range, the fire.
26:26It's lovely.
26:27Well, that's what it's all about.
26:28I must admit, I'm not into particularly interior design,
26:32but at a place like this,
26:34in a house like this,
26:35you have to keep it true to what it really is.
26:38I just love the eclectic mix.
26:39There's all sorts.
26:40This is one of my talking pieces.
26:44I know what it is!
26:46It's a chastity belt.
26:47Yeah.
26:48Chastity belts originated in the 15th century
26:51and were designed to prevent young women
26:53from engaging in a lustful acts.
26:58One careful owner didn't work.
26:59Yeah, it didn't work at all, did it?
27:01Nine children?
27:01Nine children.
27:02Yeah, okay.
27:02It definitely didn't work.
27:04I am going to hang on to that.
27:05Yeah, but I suppose that just illustrates
27:07the quirkiness of what we're going to find today.
27:09As we go along,
27:10I guess if you see anything that sort of stands out,
27:12and I can say yay or nay.
27:14Good plan.
27:16Well, I guess we should make a start
27:17on those outhouses then.
27:19Oh, wow.
27:20We like this.
27:21Most of this stuff has been sort of picked up along the way.
27:24Yeah.
27:25And it's been like,
27:26oh, I'll get around to moving that, shifting it,
27:28and then I don't.
27:29Yeah.
27:29I saw another bar on there that looks full as well.
27:32Yeah.
27:32If you were going to grade it,
27:34you'd have to say the worst is in there.
27:36Okay.
27:37Anyway, I'll let you have a look.
27:38Okay.
27:38I'll go get the kettle on.
27:39Yeah.
27:39Well, see you in a bit.
27:40Thanks, Amanda.
27:42Right, Nick.
27:43I love that oil kettle.
27:44I don't want to get stuck into that.
27:46There's loads of things I've spotted.
27:47There's a real eclectic mix.
27:49Nice stuff I can get really passionate about.
27:51I think we could probably fill the van ten times over.
27:53But we'll see what we can do.
27:55If we do a good job first time round,
27:57shall we have us back?
27:58Don't get ahead of yourself, Angus.
28:00Looks like there's an awful lot to sift through in here.
28:03If we go through,
28:04maybe we'll do a little pile out there of potentials.
28:08We'll get Amanda out and say,
28:09can we take this?
28:10Can we take that?
28:11Yeah.
28:11So that's nice.
28:12But I think the star, really, is the oil can.
28:15Nick, I mean, that is...
28:16Yeah, yeah.
28:17Yeah.
28:18Look at that.
28:19I mean, that is...
28:20You know, automobilia or anything like that
28:23is really collectible,
28:24particularly the vintage bits.
28:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:26You can date this quite well, actually,
28:27because it's going to be early 1930s,
28:29because obviously that's very recognisable,
28:31the aeroplane, the supermarine.
28:33So that's 1931, that was flying and racing.
28:36So it's early 30s.
28:38Yeah.
28:38I mean, they fetched about 300 to 500 at auction.
28:40Grease is the word, eh, chap?
28:42Do you want to have a rummage through,
28:44see what you can find,
28:45and I'll go have a look in the other shed?
28:46Yeah, brilliant.
28:47A promising start.
28:49So, what will you spend your auction dough on, Amanda?
28:52If I'm really honest with you,
28:54and I think Angus will probably pick up on this
28:57if he hasn't already,
28:58I'll probably reinvest.
29:00If I'm hearing this correctly,
29:02I think Amanda wants to spend it all at Angus'.
29:05Angus is on to a winner with me,
29:07because I'll probably end up buying more
29:09than I end up selling.
29:11Now there's an incentive for you, Angus.
29:13Just look at that.
29:14Bobbin shop.
29:151945.
29:16Nice.
29:17That is lovely.
29:18It's come out of a textiles mill, most probably.
29:21The bobbins that would have been on the textile machines,
29:22you would have housed in here,
29:24it would have been wheeled along the factory floor.
29:26The British textile industry,
29:28based out of Lancashire and Yorkshire,
29:31boomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
29:34before beginning a rapid decline after the Second World War,
29:38due to competition from abroad,
29:40where production costs were cheaper.
29:43Bobbin carts, like Amanda's from the 1940s,
29:46were used to transport spools of thread around the mills.
29:50It was a thing of purpose, made for industry,
29:52but now a thing of decorative beauty.
29:54The market for that's quite good.
29:56Nice thing is that.
29:57Hopefully that's a yes off Amanda for this one.
30:02Now, how's Angus' wingman getting on?
30:05Well, that's a nice selection you've put together, Nick.
30:07I like this.
30:08Oh, what's that?
30:09Now, I couldn't really tell you what it is,
30:11but I can tell you where it's from.
30:12It's some sort of sailor's tool.
30:14HMS Unicorn.
30:16Oh, nice.
30:16Now, HMS Unicorn, that's actually a frigate, 1824,
30:18I think it was launched.
30:20Built shortly after the Napoleonic Wars had ended,
30:23the frigate HMS Unicorn never saw active service.
30:28In 1873, she became a naval training vessel
30:31and now sits remarkably well-preserved
30:34as a floating museum in Dundee Harbour.
30:37So, what I like about this,
30:38it's stamped HMS Unicorn with a date, 1874.
30:40It's also got the guy's name on it, the owner, D. Rose.
30:43I'll have to ask Mark, he was a sailor.
30:45Yes, indeed, exactly what I thought, yeah.
30:47One to look into back at base.
30:49Oh, great find. I like that.
30:51I'll grab Amanda and see what we can get on the van.
30:53All right.
30:54Providing there's no pets or livestock hangers,
30:57I'm sure she'll be happy.
30:59So, we've put a few things out
31:01that potentially I thought maybe I'd like to let go.
31:04Don't know what that is.
31:06It's carved sort of big nut.
31:08Oh, I know it's a carved big nut, but is it a money box?
31:11Yes. Yeah, I think that's really nice, is that?
31:13I like that.
31:14This 19th-century Spanish money box is carved from coconut.
31:18Am I OK with that?
31:19The sailor's tool?
31:20Yeah, I'm not into sailing.
31:21OK, great. So, those bits could potentially go...
31:23OK.
31:25The blunderbuss?
31:26Yeah, the blunderbuss.
31:27Is there a market for blunderbusses?
31:29Yeah.
31:29So, this is Georgian, late 1700s, early 1800s.
31:33A forerunner of the shotgun,
31:35blunderbusses had a distinctive flared muzzle
31:38and were predominantly a civilian's weapon used for self-defence.
31:43So, you know, when the high-run ones come in, you can...
31:46Yeah.
31:46..and then you fired your single shot
31:48and then you release your bayonet and you can...
31:50Vicious, isn't it?
31:52This old thing was decommissioned years ago.
31:54I think in its present condition, it's probably sort of 400 to 600.
31:58It's just a little bit tired.
32:00Got to be worth a shot, Amanda.
32:01Let's give it a go, then.
32:03Give it a go.
32:04With so many yeas and not many nays...
32:07Just, you still have to check it,
32:08make sure there's not a kid or a cat in it.
32:10Angus and Nick are getting away with a lot more than they bargained for.
32:13This cat's determined.
32:16And with the smalls loaded, all it takes is one final push...
32:21..to get the bigger bits on...
32:24..and it's almost time to trade one beauty spot for another.
32:31That's us loaded up, Nick.
32:32All right, OK.
32:33..and head back to Kirby Moorside.
32:37I thought I'd best show you the van before we drive off, Amanda.
32:40I'm going to be checking this out.
32:42Yeah, I know, well...
32:43..for stowawares.
32:44There's no cats, there's no extra bits.
32:47You've done a really good job.
32:48Actually, there's more in there than I anticipated there would be,
32:52so you've convinced me.
32:54Get it shut quick, before I change my mind.
32:57Are you happy to swap the Dales for the Moors for a day?
32:59Definitely, I'm excited about it.
33:01Well, get off and we'll see you then.
33:03Well, it's been an absolutely wonderful day.
33:05And, you know, Amanda's let quite a few interesting bits go.
33:08So I'm really hoping we can do well at auction,
33:11because that might just entice her to maybe call us back again.
33:15From the Yorkshire auctioneer to the Yorkshire shepherdess,
33:18it's back to the sale.
33:19Yep, time to get home and tend to your own flock, Angus.
33:23There's plenty of goodies for them to graze on in that van.
33:26Come on, Mark.
33:40No, no.
33:41Can you give me a hand?
33:42I will.
33:42Yeah.
33:44Amanda's eclectic collection of curios and bygones
33:47is ready to be poured over by the team.
33:51Unusual taste in items.
33:52But you'll see as we get it out.
33:53Yeah.
33:54Just wondering if you could identify what this is.
33:56You might know what it's for.
33:58It's a mortise chisel.
33:59Is it?
34:00Yeah.
34:00So that'll probably be the ship's carpenter.
34:02And then, of course, it's hammered that
34:04and there's some little hammer indentations there, look.
34:07I knew you'd know what it was.
34:08Well done, Mark.
34:09The mortise chisel could make up to £100.
34:13Once the lads have unloaded the van and got everything inside,
34:16the big job of researching and cataloguing
34:19all those treasures can begin.
34:22So that's it.
34:22Thanks for your help, Mark.
34:23Appreciate that.
34:32What we've got here is a vintage child's pedal car.
34:36I've had a good look over this.
34:37I can't find any maker's marks.
34:40So it's impossible to kind of say who produced it.
34:43I'm thinking kind of 1920s, 1930s.
34:46Cars like this, especially in the early days,
34:48they were expensive and they were generally for wealthier people.
34:51They were all made by hand, obviously.
34:53So that's why I like items like this,
34:54because there's just more love going into making something like this.
34:57It's crank-driven as well.
34:59Obviously, no brakes.
35:00Back in the day when fun and safety,
35:01they never went hand in hand.
35:03It was just about having fun.
35:04It's incomplete.
35:05It's missing quite a lot to it,
35:06but it's still in quite a charming condition.
35:09Because of the state it's in,
35:11I think we're just going to have to put a price to sell on it,
35:13like $40 to $60, something like that.
35:15It could do the higher end of that.
35:16I hope so.
35:21I must admit, when I first got given this,
35:23I had no idea what this was.
35:24So I've done a bit of research.
35:26It's called a serving mallet,
35:28and it's like a rigging tool.
35:29I'm reckoning this one is probably 19th century.
35:32Serving was a sailor's method of protecting rope
35:35from getting damaged by wrapping it tightly in twine.
35:39So you basically have pieces of string wrapped around here,
35:42and you have your rope,
35:44and then you place it like that,
35:46and it would rotate around,
35:48and as you rotate it,
35:49it creates a very, very tight binding,
35:52and you can see how tight it was, though.
35:53Wow.
35:54Because that's all been worn in,
35:55and I'd imagine it's quite highly collectible.
35:57I would have thought so.
35:58Maritime stuff always does well, doesn't it?
36:00I mean, I'm thinking somewhere in the realm of 1 to 200.
36:03Never seen one in the sailor room, so...
36:05Yeah, well, we'll just have to see.
36:07Give it a go.
36:07Oh, yeah.
36:17Angus, how are you?
36:18Amanda, how are you doing?
36:19You all right?
36:19I'm all right.
36:20Yeah, good, good.
36:21Beautiful day?
36:21Yeah, it is, isn't it?
36:22I'm busy time of the year for you.
36:24Don't.
36:24You're already making me feel guilty.
36:26Literally, as I've left Swaledale,
36:28the weather has got better,
36:29and now I'm in pure, beautiful blue skies, sunshine.
36:32Probably should be making hay, shouldn't we?
36:34But, look, this is a day off.
36:35This is a day out for me.
36:36Good.
36:37Well, you've got some nice stuff.
36:38Well, come and show me what you've done.
36:39Go on.
36:40Never mind about making hay, Amanda.
36:42Yeah, I'll catch up with you in a bit.
36:44Today's all about turning your 22 lots into serious cash.
36:49My goodness, there's some stuff in here.
36:52Oh, temptation.
36:55The Yorkshire Shepherdess meets the Yorkshire auctioneer,
36:57and she's got some great items.
36:59I mean, really proper antiques.
37:01This was literally just shoved in the barn.
37:03I think, actually, that something had lived in it,
37:06looking at the chew marks.
37:07The oil can, the bobbing car.
37:09I think we'll do well.
37:10She's got some good bits.
37:12We've got plenty of pre-sale interest in.
37:14As for the car, I thought it was maybe consigned to go to the tip, really.
37:19But you never know.
37:20If Angus thinks he can sell it, maybe he can.
37:22She loves an auction.
37:23She goes to auctions all the time.
37:24This is like an Aladdin's cave for me.
37:27There's a lot of temptation.
37:29I just want to raise as much money as possible,
37:31so she's got plenty of money to spend.
37:33I can honestly say that I am really clueless
37:36as to what these items might make.
37:39I've just got to trust Angus.
37:40It all looks better than it did when I had it.
37:43I think, really, I just need whoever cleans all this stuff up
37:47at the auction mat to come to my house and start cleaning things.
37:49Amanda's items have been scrubbed up and herded up
37:53into 22 lots for the sale.
37:56Also looking neat and tidy as ever
37:58are internet bid trackers Millie and Jasper.
38:01So, with the Yorkshire Shepherdess in position,
38:03here comes a man who will never fleece his customers.
38:06It's Angus!
38:08You're very privileged to have you here at this time of the year.
38:10The sheep are done.
38:11The sheep are being sheared.
38:12The sheep are being sheaved.
38:14First, the question on everybody's lips.
38:17Who here needs to defend themselves against a highwayman?
38:21Ah, this wonderful late 18th century blunderbuss there.
38:24You put this to a lot of use, didn't you?
38:25Absolutely.
38:26If you're a bad shot, you can finish them off.
38:29She's joking, folks.
38:30It's had all its dangerous bits stripped out
38:32and is purely ornamental.
38:34Ah, we open at £380 a bit.
38:37At £380 it is.
38:38Then at £380 the blunderbuss there.
38:39At £380 a bit.
38:40At £380, £400 is it now.
38:42At £400 a bit.
38:43£420.
38:43£420 a bit then at £420.
38:45At £420 it is.
38:46At £420 pounds.
38:50The auction is off with a bang.
38:53Amazing.
38:547, 8, 4, 4, 9.
38:56It's all that.
38:57Now, any junior mechanics out there fancy a fixer-upper?
39:01Oh, look at this.
39:02This is Bonfine's car.
39:05You know, classic.
39:06I don't even know where it came from.
39:07I don't know how it ended up there.
39:09But, yeah, hope it goes to a new home
39:11and somebody can do something with it.
39:12What do you reckon it's worth?
39:13It probably would have gone to the scrap.
39:15Would it?
39:15Oh, that's all right then.
39:16Ah, we've got £50 bid.
39:17And £5, £65, £75, £85, £95, £100.
39:21£100 a bit at £100 it is.
39:23£110.
39:23Commission's out at £110 on the net.
39:25Then at £110.
39:25£120, £120.
39:26At £120 it is.
39:27Then at £120.
39:28£30, £40.
39:29£140 bid.
39:30£150.
39:32£150 it is.
39:33Then at £150 it is.
39:34Hold on.
39:34I'm going to sell away the net bid at £150.
39:39Wow.
39:40That one really hit Top Gear.
39:42Oh, you've done well there.
39:44Can Angus deliver another slick sale with this next lot?
39:48The Gummages Motor Oil can.
39:50There we go.
39:50A lot of interest in this one.
39:51£400 start.
39:52At £400 it is.
39:53Then at top bid.
39:54At £400 it is.
39:55Then at £400 you're all out.
39:56At £400 it is.
39:57Then at £400.
39:59Then I'm selling away.
39:59Then at £400 the oil can.

40:01Fresh bid.
40:02£440.
40:03£440.
40:03£440.
40:04It's against you online.
40:05All done.
40:06At £440.
40:07Well done, Angus.
40:11Another one in the can.
40:13What happened with that?
40:13Fine.
40:14Let's see if Angus can tie up another sale with the next lot.
40:18It's a sailor's rigging mallet.
40:21Not...
40:23No.
40:25Lovely thing.
40:26And I've got £70 bid.
40:28At £70 a bid.
40:28Then at £70 it is.
40:29Then at £70.

40:36Then at £80.
40:37And £80 it is.
40:38Then at £80.
40:40Looks like our skipper is clearing the decks today.
40:43Oh, this is excellent.
40:45I'm so enjoying this.
40:46With the wind billowing his sails, Angus batons down the hatches and sees off another 16 lots,
40:53including...
40:54At 100.
40:55The 19th century sailor's chisel from HMS Unicorn and...
41:01All done at 80.
41:04The 19th century coconut carved money box.
41:10Thank you, you got there.
41:12So what's Angus been saving for last?
41:15Oh, one of my favourite lots.
41:18You had to get the straw and the chicken droppings out of that, didn't you?
41:22And you nearly took a cat.
41:23Yeah, all right, the cat was in it.
41:25There we go, the bobbin shop.
41:271945, the war period.
41:29That is just lovely.
41:31Make a great log basket or something like that.
41:33It's a nice thing, is this?
41:34Got £260 bid.
41:35At £260, it's lovely.
41:36The little cart there.

42:01Wind the bobbin up and watch it go.
42:06Thank you so much.
42:07You can come back any time.
42:08I will, I will.
42:10Angus has sheared off every single one of Amanda's 22 lots.
42:14But how much cash has he rounded up for her to, er,
42:17spend in his auction house?
42:19Hey, Amanda, how are we doing?
42:21There is nothing like the excitement of an auction.
42:24Yeah, a bit slower than what you're used to,
42:25cos, you know, livestock auctioneering.
42:27That's...
42:27The metal car.
42:30Yeah.
42:31You had techniques pitched from the best angle, I must admit.
42:34It's a little bit rough and ready, but lovely.
42:36Rough and ready.
42:36That sums me up.
42:38That sums up everything.
42:39Rough.
42:40It's all a bit of fun,
42:41and I've really, really enjoyed being here today.
42:43And you've made me a bit of, er...
42:45What?
42:45... money to reinvest.
42:46Well, do you want to know how much money you've got to spend?
42:48Go on, then.
42:49£2,286.
42:52You're serious, eh?
42:53Yeah.
42:55That...
42:55I can't believe that.
42:57Because this is stuff that, er...
42:59that I actually won't miss.
43:01Yeah.
43:02It's been an absolute pleasure.
43:03It's been an education.
43:04Well, you ring me next time you want to clear up.
43:06Yeah.
43:07He has got the gift of the gab, that guy.
43:10I thought I had the gift of the gab.
43:11Nothing compared with him.
43:13This is the first time
43:14that I have actually been and sold items at an auction.
43:18Sold animals, sold sheep, sold cattle, all the rest of it.
43:22But, yeah, it's been a wonderful day.
43:24I've so enjoyed myself.
43:25I'm delighted for Amanda.
43:27She's had a great day.
43:28Great to have her here.
43:29Great Yorkshire lass.
43:30And, yeah, hopefully we'll see her again.
43:32We'll see you next time.
