00:00Across Yorkshire's moors and dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal care.
00:09And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:14His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:16All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:19...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:23There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:25Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:28Not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it? I know.
00:31Now has two practices. I don't want to let him go.
00:35One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:41Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:44And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:47That's a Hollywood smile.
00:49...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:55I'm just gonna have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57The teams are united.
00:59We can probably knock this off ourselves, do you think?
01:01Never taking their eyes off the ball.
01:06Has there help animals of all shapes?
01:09It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:11Sizes...
01:12Endo-gorgeous.
01:13...types...
01:14Catch.
01:15...and temperaments.
01:17No, don't be nasty.
01:19While the work isn't glamorous...
01:20Get that mucus out.
01:22For Shona, scrubbing up is about to take on a whole new meaning.
01:26Ready to get married?
01:27I mean, there's four weeks to go, but yeah.
01:29With love very much in the air.
01:31Wow.
01:32It's all creatures great...
01:34Because they're in a trailer down there and people are taking selfies with them.
01:38Small...
01:39How does a dog get married and I don't?
01:41...and a big Yorkshire wedding.
01:43In Yorkshire, many things go hand in hand.
01:58Wedded side by side forever.
02:02In unbreakable union.
02:05The hills and valleys.
02:08Every bridge over peaceful water.
02:12And after delivering the sermon to pronounce that each new day has dawned.
02:18Birds flying freely across the ever-changing northern skies.
02:26Although she's a hardened Yorkshire vet,
02:32Shona is on cloud nine at the moment.
02:35Hello.
02:36No, you're not escaping.
02:38She's planning her wedding to fiancé James.
02:41It's a nice hair.
02:42Which will take place at their home near Huddersfield.
02:45Come on.
02:46Surrounded by their menagerie of animals.
02:51We always kind of jokingly said, didn't we, that we could get married here.
02:54The landscape's amazing, the view's amazing.
02:56Yeah, it's not a shopping wedding venue, is it?
02:58It's definitely not a shopping wedding venue.
03:00But their convenient venue isn't quite wedding ready.
03:05With the big day only three months away.
03:08A long-term project of having a nice steady progression of doing the farm up,
03:12doing the land up, has been flipped on its head.
03:15We've now got a tight deadline.
03:17All right, guys.
03:18All right.
03:19Having fun?
03:20Yep.
03:21It's looking good, though.
03:23All where these big stones are here, that's just going to be long.
03:26And this will be where the teepees are.
03:29Hopefully, we're going to get married outside.
03:32It's going to be a glorious sunshine day, and everyone's going to be able to see this amazing view,
03:37and have some champagne out on the terrace.
03:40And while everyone prays there'll be no rain on their wedding day, the Yorkshire weather's already been a problem for Shona and James.
03:52Unfortunately, this year's been a bit tricky with the rain, the wind.
03:55But luckily for us, we've got a nice local team of elite contractors that have all rallied together.
03:59Yeah, yeah.
04:00They've been absolutely fantastic in the whole thing.
04:01They have, yeah.
04:02Yeah, because they've been battling the elements.
04:04So that has made us a bit more nervous.
04:06But I'm confident we'll get it to some kind of level good enough for the wedding.
04:10Nothing like a challenge.
04:11I think it'd be down to a wire.
04:12I think we're going to be fine.
04:14Positive thoughts, isn't it?
04:15Positive thinking, yeah.
04:16In sickness and in health is a concept already familiar to Shona.
04:25And at the moment, she can be wedding planner by day, Yorkshire vet by night.
04:33After an emergency call about a pregnant cow, she's just arrived at Laura and James' farm.
04:41Hello, how are you doing?
04:42Hello.
04:43So it's big?
04:44I think so.
04:46You think so?
04:47Yeah, I'm fairly confident.
04:48There's some feet sticking out.
04:51Let's just start calving.
04:53We've had a pull and it's worked tight.
04:55It's a big calf.
04:56Very tight.
04:57So we've got the calf's feet sticking out the back end.
05:01James says it's quite tight.
05:03I would trust him on that because he's got a pretty good measure of his cows.
05:09And usually when James says it's tight, I've not known him to be wrong yet.
05:13So I'm not going to stress the calf out by pulling it anymore.
05:16We're going to prep for a seizure.
05:20The sooner the better because the longer they're sat there, then they can get stressed with time.
05:25First thing I'm doing is giving her an epidural.
05:28It relaxes the cow.
05:29It means she's not pushing as much, which makes the whole operation a bit easier.
05:34And it also makes it more comfortable for her.
05:37She's trying to go down, isn't she?
05:39Yeah, she's going to be awkward.
05:40Come on, lady.
05:41Come on.
05:42Get up.
05:43Get up.
05:44She's making it difficult.
05:45We've not even got to the point we're trying to get the calf out yet.
05:50I've asked James if we could maybe put some tyres behind her to hold her forwards.
05:54Because she's trying to shunt forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards.
05:57So we're going to put these behind her and we'll see if that'll just help reduce the movement a little bit.
06:02I've got it there now, shall we?
06:04Oh, that's great.
06:05That's going to help.
06:06Right, so we're good to go.
06:09Right, is everyone ready?
06:15She's got a decent bit of muscle on her.
06:18She's got some fluid in there.
06:22So this is exactly what I mean about them moving.
06:24You're there with a scalpel blade trying to cut and you've got a moving target.
06:28Easy, lady.
06:29Come on.
06:30Don't make it difficult.
06:31Right.
06:32Let's see what we're going to find.
06:33We need to hopefully get everything alive.
06:34Legs are on the far side of the abdomen.
06:35It's like just a bit awkward.
06:36Ah!
06:37Ah!
06:38Ah!
06:39Ah!
06:40Ah!
06:41Ah!
06:42Ah!
06:43Ah!
06:44Ah!
06:45Ah!
06:46Ah!
06:47Ah!
06:48Ah!
06:49Ah!
06:50Ah!
06:51Ah!
06:52Ah!
06:53Ah!
06:54Ah!
06:55Ah!
06:56Ah!
06:57Ah!
06:58Ah!
06:59Ah!
07:00Ah!
07:01Ah!
07:02Ah!
07:03Ah!
07:04Ah!
07:05Ah!
07:06Ah!
07:07Ah!
07:08Ah!
07:09Ah!
07:10Ah!
07:11Ah!
07:12Ah!
07:13Ah!
07:14Ah!
07:15Ah!
07:16Ah!
07:17Ah!
07:18Ah!
07:19Ah!
07:20Ah!
07:21Ah!
07:22Ah!
07:23Ah!
07:24Ah!
07:25Ah!
07:26Ah!
07:27Ah!
07:28Ah!
07:29Ah!
07:30they were part of that as well, they're part of the family,
07:32so we sort of say that it's Mr and Mrs Spudley done
07:35and they had their own little wedding.
07:38Today, the not-so-happy couples are here to see Julian about Mr Spudley.
07:45Spud's got a tumour growth on his body that we've tested recently
07:48and it's a mast cell tumour, which is a type of cancer.
07:52So Julian came back within about ten minutes to say it was a mast cell tumour,
07:57which obviously is devastating for us.
07:59So it's quite stressful, really.
08:02Spud?
08:03Come on, Daisy.
08:04Daisy and Spud.
08:05Daisy and Spud, they come as a pair.
08:07I know, they go anywhere together, don't they, these two?
08:13So it was down here, wasn't it?
08:15Under his harness, yeah.
08:17It's soft, isn't it?
08:18It was like that when you tested it, though.
08:20It was pretty conclusive.
08:21What you can't tell is kind of how cancerous they are.
08:24They vary tremendously from being very cancerous to being almost benign.
08:30We need to take it off.
08:32We'll do him fairly soon.
08:37Would Daisy be all right, do you think, without her husband?
08:40It'd be interesting to see.
08:41I think she might be a bit lost without him.
08:44Once he's round and ready to go, I'll give you a shout.
08:47For Spud, it's an emotional farewell to wife Daisy.
08:51Come on, Spud.
08:52Good boy.
08:53Spud, we're going this way.
08:54Come on, Spuddy.
08:55Love you.
08:55All right, cheerio.
08:56But he's straight into the arms of another...
09:01Come on, Spud.
09:02...Nurse Lucy.
09:04Good boy.
09:06Oh, he's still walking a little bit, but I'll carry you.
09:10Oh, he is a Spud, isn't he?
09:12You round like a jacket potato.
09:15Right then, Spuddy boy.
09:16Spud's other half, he's got Daisy.
09:19Apparently they're, like, the dog equivalent of husband and wife.
09:22How does a dog get married and I don't?
09:25Are you near to getting married?
09:27I've asked him a million times.
09:28Why don't you pop the question to him?
09:30Oh, absolutely not.
09:31No?
09:32I'd never do that.
09:33Why not?
09:33Because I'm traditional.
09:34Like, he needs to ask my dad first.
09:36Oh, God.
09:37I've given him a four-year limit and I'm on two years now, so...
09:41Have you got a backup plan?
09:42Find someone else.
09:45But Julian is well aware there's only one woman for Spud.
09:50And that she'll be waiting.
09:52They've obviously got quite a strong bond.
09:54So there's a bit of extra added pressure in that regard.
10:02Right.
10:02This is the mast cell tumour.
10:05It's rounder and bigger than I was anticipating.
10:10Fingers crossed it'll go well.
10:14Coming up...
10:16I just want my finger to be two inches more.
10:18As she tries to save the calf, Shona has a partner.
10:22Sadek, Sadek.
10:24Good girl.
10:25That is the wedding planning about teamwork.
10:28We went round the houses and then we went back to Shona's initial plan.
10:31Which is what has happened with most things in this wedding planning.
10:34And Peter rushes to Jean's.
10:37Sybil may be giving birth.
10:39Whose pair of donkeys might have bonded a little too much.
10:42And you've been up to something you shouldn't have been.
10:45Not it.
10:57Under the night sky near Huddersfield.
11:00I just want my finger to be two inches more.
11:03Pride-to-be Shona is performing an emergency C-section on James and Laura's mum-to-be.
11:09If I grip it too hard, I'm going to end up tearing it.
11:13When lives are at stake, extra hands are always helpful.
11:17You're scrubbing in.
11:18If you feel like it, that'd be awesome.
11:20And tonight, Shona has herself an especially useful assistant in Laura.
11:24Right, Laura, I might need your hand in here.
11:27Yeah.
11:28I work at a vex.
11:29I'm an animal care assistant.
11:30I've been doing it for ten years.
11:33Took and found that nurse.
11:34It's always handy.
11:36If you come on my left, let me just see what I can go.
11:39There's loads of gut in the way.
11:40All right, hang on, I've got all of this.
11:43OK.
11:44Hey.
11:45Come on.
11:48Come on, boy.
11:51Have you got crap?
11:52Yeah.
11:53I'm boiling.
11:53I'm sweating.
11:56Right, try it again.
11:58Yes.
11:58Yeah, that's it.
11:59We're getting somewhere.
11:59There, yeah, yeah.
12:00It's a heavy bugger.
12:03Don't wriggle.
12:04Steady, steady, steady.
12:07Good girl.
12:09You might have to twist it down.
12:12Are you all right catching it?
12:14Or do you...
12:15I'll pull legs if you touch weight.
12:19Got it?
12:20Yes.
12:22Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
12:24Ow.
12:26Nice one, guys.
12:28Yeah, ball.
12:29Are we going?
12:30Yeah, it's alive.
12:31Well done, guys.
12:32Neither is everyone, that.
12:35Breathing anyway, so that's a good step.
12:39Yeah, good do.
12:40Yeah, it's alive.
12:40We're absolutely not through the woods yet.
12:43Sometimes they can do dramatic things like fall down while we're trying to stitch them up.
12:48So we're still at one of the most important bits, really.
12:51Oh, they're all nosey.
12:52Oh, they're all nosey.
12:54But they're just waiting to get fed.
12:56I haven't fed out yet, so...
12:57They're wondering who's holding them up from being fed, aren't they?
12:59They're going to be telling her off.
13:01Like Barbara, why have you stopped us getting after him?
13:04Do you want to do the honour?
13:06Do you want to do the honour?
13:09You're a little man.
13:11Have a look at you then.
13:12I think that had no chance of coming out the back door without causing some damage to the cow.
13:19I mean, a normal calf is about 40 kilos.
13:23He's easily got 10 kilos on that, if not 15.
13:26Everything looks all right, but he is a solid little monster.
13:30Aren't you?
13:31Yeah.
13:34Thanks for all your help.
13:36No, thank you.
13:37Yeah, thanks for scribbling in, Laura.
13:38It's really handy having you when you know what you're doing.
13:40Fab, thank you.
13:43That's done really well.
13:45Calf looks like an absolute cracker.
13:46It looks really good.
13:47He's nearly up on his feet.
13:49He's got a good mum.
13:50I think he's going to do very well.
13:58At the practice in Wetherby...
14:01Do you know how much you weighed today?
14:0312 kilos.
14:04Julian and Lucy are removing Spud the Pug's large cancerous lump.
14:11With massotribs, you've got to go all the way around it with a gap around it to make sure you've got it all.
14:19Because if you don't, chances are it'll come back again.
14:25And the pressure is on, with Daisy, Spud's wife, waiting for him.
14:30It's going all right.
14:32It's sort of near to the muscle, so I'm trying to just make the right kind of judgment as to where to make my dissection.
14:42I'm wanting to get a bit of the muscle layer, just but not too much of it.
14:47He's really settled.
14:48He's absolutely fine so far.
14:50All right, off.
14:57You can just...
14:58Quirt it round.
14:58Quirt it round, yeah.
15:00This is slush, really, just to wash away any cancer cells that might be left lying around.
15:06It's quite a good idea to do that with mass cell tumours.
15:08All right, so, first knee back together next.
15:16Sometimes when you take off a big lump and you've got a big gap to close, it sometimes doesn't come together quite as neatly as you expect, but this is looking quite good so far.
15:26There we are.
15:27Perfect.
15:28With Spud's surgery over, the monogamous pug can peacefully dream of Daisy until they're reunited.
15:38Are you missing Daisy?
15:40He's got a wife.
15:41You've got a wife?
15:42Yeah, he's married.
15:43Lucky boy.
15:44Are you missing your wife?
15:45Aw.
15:46I think he'll be more excited to see her today because usually he doesn't get a break from her.
15:50And usually, I think my fella prefers to see me when he's had a bit of a break from me, so...
15:56Yeah, you'll see you later.
16:00Good boy.
16:08Back over near Huddersfield, the venue's coming along nicely.
16:12Oh, nice.
16:14But there's still much to be decided.
16:16I do.
16:17Ahead of Shona and James' big, farmy Yorkshire wedding.
16:21I was thinking something like this would go for Dad and your dad.
16:27Yeah, well, look at the three-piece idea.
16:28Do you think they'll like that one?
16:30No.
16:31I don't think...
16:32Shall we just tell them that's what they're going to wear?
16:34These hills will come alive with sound, but if music be the food of love, James might have been played.
16:42James wanted a band.
16:43I just wanted a DJ and some dancing, just pretend that I was back at uni, dancing at vet school to all the cheesy stuff like Combine Harvester.
16:52So we looked at a few bands, well, I looked at a few bands.
16:56We went round the houses and then we went back to Shona's initial plan, which is what has happened with most things in this wedding planning.
17:03So we've gone back to Shona's original plan.
17:07But of course, the really big job is making sure their home is ready to host 130 guests.
17:14Getting pretty nervous now.
17:15The deadline's approaching pretty quick.
17:17I think the project refurb is definitely going to be down to a wire.
17:20We've been doing quite a lot of work in the gardens.
17:22We've had some new grassland.
17:24We've got the fence done behind us, so, yeah, we can have the sheep in the field and they can come right up to the garden.
17:29We can give them a pat over the fence.
17:31One of the big reasons that we wanted to have it at home is we've got all our animals who we love to bit,
17:36so it's nice to welcome our friends and family to come and have a little bit of that for the weekend.
17:44This has all been levelled out with the diggers to make it flat enough so we've got a big enough area to put the teepee on here.
17:51All being well, the front of the teepees will be open and we can just enjoy this brilliant view of Yorkshire.
17:56It's going to be a sunny day. There's no other option.
17:59It's not going to be raining, it's not going to be windy, and it's not going to be cold.
18:11At the Huddersfield Hospital, Shona's colleagues are busy with regular vet work.
18:17There you go.
18:18My tail's wagging a bit now.
18:19Are you OK?
18:20But as they help a poorly tortoise, Matt and David...
18:25Gee, good lad.
18:26There you go. Nice and secure.
18:29...have the fast pace of wedding season on their minds.
18:33Calvin's been a year since you got married, and a year before it was me.
18:36And it's Shona's big day coming up in a few weeks' time.
18:39Yeah, she seems to be running around like an absolute nutter getting everything ready.
18:42But that's how it is before weddings, isn't it?
18:44It's pretty hectic, but it'll all work out on the day.
18:47And how has it now been Mr and Mrs David?
18:51Yeah, it's brilliant. I don't miss my solitary life.
18:54I know you're unfortunately busy on the weekend, Matt, but...
18:58I was thinking of advice we can give her, but all I can think of from mine is...
19:02...don't drink too much the night before.
19:04Have you lost your ring-up or cow yet?
19:06Absolutely not. No, so...
19:08Oh, God, Jay, you hear the stories.
19:09I'm surprised you haven't lost yours yet, actually.
19:11I came so close.
19:12I've got into quite a good habit of taking it off before I do carvings and serves and stuff like that.
19:17But one time I went straight to a carving, and everything was getting really slippery.
19:21And I pulled my hand out, and I felt it move.
19:23And I was like, ooh, bloody hell.
19:25I'd have been in trouble. Big trouble.
19:32Something old.
19:35Something new.
19:37Something borrowed.
19:38Something blue.
19:41Come on.
19:42When the Greens' old donkey, Sibyl, was joined by new boy, Fernando...
19:46Sibyl.
19:47...originally borrowed from Callenhall Farm...
19:50Look.
19:51Look who's this.
19:53That's it.
19:54...there was a bit of blue.
19:56We've had some donkey porn, haven't we?
19:59Oh, yeah.
20:00It's like watching a blue movie.
20:02And today, Peter's heading over to Jean and Steve's, after hearing that the donkey romance might be having dramatic repercussions.
20:12Sibyl seems to be acting strangely, and Jean's concerned that she may be giving birth.
20:22She has been with Fernando, this young whippersnapper she befriended about a year ago now.
20:29But as soon as it was practically possible, we castrated him.
20:33But he may have carried out the dreadful deed prior to castration.
20:38It is possible.
20:38Sarah saw him at it, so it makes you think whether he has or he hasn't.
20:48Come here, Fernando.
20:49What are you doing?
20:51Have you been a naughty boy?
20:54Hello, Jean.
20:56Hi, Peter.
20:57I'm just talking to Fernando.
20:59I think he's been a naughty boy.
21:01Do you think he has?
21:02Yeah.
21:03Have you been up to something you shouldn't have been?
21:05There's been some doubt for some time, as to whether he'd got up to carry out dreadful deeds.
21:13He's saying nothing, is he?
21:15No, he's keeping quiet.
21:16He doesn't want to pay maintenance.
21:19She's had a tear up.
21:21Yes.
21:21And she's been stood like this.
21:23Yes.
21:24And when we can't get near it.
21:26No.
21:27All right, Sue.
21:29Good girl.
21:30Good lass.
21:32Let's have a look.
21:33Do you want me to hold her?
21:36If you could, please, Jean.
21:39She certainly looks like she's been feeding for two.
21:42Yeah.
21:43Well, let's have a look underneath.
21:45Go on, I've got her.
21:48Stand.
21:51Now, there's no order there, Jean, at all.
21:53No bag?
21:54No.
21:55Sarah said the most.
21:56No, there isn't.
21:57There's no changing her vulva at all.
21:59There's no other development, either.
22:02But other development can be, like, just within the last, well, even the last 24 hours, really.
22:09But there's no development at all there, Jean.
22:11I won't be able to get my hand in.
22:14I'm already falling, that bugger.
22:16You're aware of words, Mrs. Gray.
22:17I think we've just got to wait and see now and give her the benefit of the doubt and just keep an eye on her, as the saying goes.
22:26But she's certainly not going to fall imminently.
22:30So, just give me a shout if you're worried at all.
22:33Right, I'll get on my way.
22:36Fault alarm.
22:37We don't think she's in full.
22:39Look, time will tell.
22:40We're okay for the time being, but obviously, Jeannie and Sarah and Steve will keep an eye on her.
22:48And I'll be waiting for that telephone call from Mrs. Green.
22:52And in that situation, I'll be down here as soon as I possibly can.
22:55I dare not be.
23:00Coming up.
23:02Come on, Daisy.
23:03Go get Spud.
23:04Is Spud the pug good to go home to the wife?
23:07She says, what's going on?
23:08Where have you been all day?
23:09And for bride-to-be Shona, it's onwards and upwards.
23:14One, two, three.
23:16In the race to get everything and everyone ready.
23:20We'll do what we can to get the goats nice and clean.
23:23I think we're getting you dirtier than when you start to carry.
23:37Near Huddersfield.
23:39James is happy with the progress of his cow and her calf, who's Shona delivered by emergency C-section.
23:49It's all going all right with a good ending.
23:51When you get rid of them, get them upfield.
23:53Yeah, what better than being stuck in the shed?
23:59The cow's doing well.
24:00She's doing a good job of it.
24:01It's grown as well as the ones that are outside already.
24:03So, yeah.
24:05It will be right.
24:06Now, Shona's focus is on another James, her fiancé.
24:13As she prepares to ditch her waterproofs and wellies for a wedding dress, her mum, Lisanne, is with her on an important day.
24:23I've just got a few more weeks to go until the wedding, and this is my final dress fitting.
24:30It's always a worry to make sure things fit.
24:32I have been stress eating the last few weeks, so that doesn't help.
24:35So, hopefully it still fits and looks good.
24:40We've had some alterations done, a few things fixed and tidied up, so I'm just going to do a final try on, make sure everything works.
24:50I'm just going to put this like I did before.
24:52Put my bag off.
24:53And a little pile on the floor.
24:56So, step in as usual, and then give me a shout when you need the back doing up.
25:01Perfect.
25:02It'll be good to see what it looks like, finally.
25:07My dress has long sleeves on it, because I was working as a large animal vet at the time, and I thought,
25:13if I get a lot of bruises down my arms, it's not going to look very good on a wedding day,
25:17so I've got a dress with long sleeves.
25:19Shona, however, has not.
25:21I look forward to what happens with that.
25:26Yeah, it's fitting you much, much better.
25:28It does, doesn't it?
25:29Yeah, it's lovely.
25:29Yeah.
25:31Shall we show her mum?
25:33Yeah.
25:42It looks wonderful.
25:45Yeah.
25:46I'm really happy with it.
25:47It's me.
25:47Yeah.
25:48Yeah, it looks lovely.
25:52Ready to go filthy on the wedding day?
25:54That's it, yeah.
25:55At least I'm going to stay white that long.
25:57Oh, I've known that one, is it?
25:59Ready to get married?
26:01I mean, there's four weeks to go, but yeah.
26:03I think it's important, isn't it?
26:04Yeah.
26:05The dress is ready, that's the important thing.
26:07The dress is definitely ready.
26:08At the practice in Wetherby.
26:19Come on, Daisy, go get Spud.
26:20Daisy, the pug, who donned her own white wedding dress when owners Vicky and Alan were married,
26:27is desperately waiting to be reunited with her pugsband Spud.
26:32Come on, Spud, we're going to meet you, Mrs.
26:35after Julian removed his tumour.
26:38She was sat by the door, waiting.
26:41She was a bit, like, where's Spud?
26:45Oh, Spudley!
26:47There we are.
26:47Hello.
26:48So he's absolutely fine.
26:51Hello.
26:52But he's on a lead, because the harness goes over where the wound is.
26:56So, yeah, uneventful, really.
26:59What's the wound like?
27:00Quite big.
27:01Oh, look, she's having a look.
27:03What's he doing, darling?
27:05Inspecting what's going on.
27:07I love my baby.
27:09She says, what's going on?
27:11Where have you been all day?
27:12You'll be great, boy.
27:13So, back to marital harmony at home.
27:18Come on, then.
27:20It was an interesting situation to see two dogs who were betrothed to each other,
27:25so the speed with which he moved from the kennels out to the waiting room,
27:30Spud was very pleased to get back home to resume normal family life.
27:36And a few weeks later...
27:38You coming?
27:39He's doing great.
27:40I was really surprised how quick he just bounced straight back.
27:45Even if Spud and Daisy's union isn't legally binding,
27:48if every married couple got along like these two...
27:51Daisy!
27:52The world would be a happier place,
27:55but maybe an inappropriate one.
27:57They sometimes carry on their marital activities in the park, shall we say,
28:01and embarrass us, so...
28:02Just separate them, but...
28:04Just shows how close they are, really.
28:07You coming, Spud?
28:10At Shona and James' home, near Huddersfield,
28:16there's still a lot of heavy lifting to do.
28:19One, two, three...
28:20With just two days to go until their wedding.
28:24One, two, three...
28:25Pretty busy day today, a bit chaotic.
28:31Teepees are going up, we've got trades absolutely everywhere.
28:34I'm really hoping that the teepees will go up okay, without too much drama.
28:39I know it's going to go wrong now, don't you?
28:40Yeah, how are we going?
28:41And for Harry's teepee team...
28:45How are we going, Will?
28:46How are we, yeah?
28:47It's been a solid start.
28:51How's it going, Harry?
28:52Yeah, all good.
28:53You got it in all right?
28:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:55Only just a tight squeeze.
28:57It was a bit awkward with the ground there, because it's not grass, but...
28:59You've managed to get the pins in, OK?
29:01I managed to do it, yeah.
29:02It was a bit of a hard labour, but we've got it done.
29:04Be a wedding venue in about 20 minutes.
29:06Yeah, roll on Saturday.
29:07So, feeling optimistic that they will have somewhere to eat the wedding breakfast,
29:16Shona can focus on the table plan.
29:19I thought it made sense if we had the tables named after the animals,
29:23and then we can put a nice little photo on each table.
29:26So, we've got some of the dogs, and here's James with one of the sheep.
29:33Bonnie the goat.
29:34Those animals also need to look their best on the big day.
29:38Come on!
29:40Good girl!
29:42And when your daughters are Yorkshire vets...
29:44Come on, girls!
29:45...and you're a former vet...
29:47Don't push me down the hill.
29:49...mother of the bride duties can take an unusual turn.
29:53Come on!
29:53I think we want one out.
29:55Where's the marigolds?
29:56We'll do what we can to get the goats nice and clean.
29:59We're going to have a little photo booth at the wedding,
30:02and I thought it would be very Shona and James-y
30:04if we involved animals in the photo booth.
30:06Try not to get your soap.
30:08Ah-ha!
30:11Everyone loves coming and giving them a cuddle anyway
30:13and looking at them because they are pretty funny.
30:15They're characters.
30:17Steady, steady, steady.
30:18Steady, steady.
30:19This is Bonnie.
30:21She's the boulder of the two goats.
30:23Whee!
30:23She's got a nice clean beard.
30:27She's a nice clean beard.
30:29Good girl.
30:30Good.
30:31Come on.
30:31Like your friend.
30:32So we've done the easy one.
30:34We've got a little berry next.
30:35She's just salting up.
30:37I've just got hay all over you now.
30:40That's not going to be very good.
30:41Well, that's not healthy.
30:42I think we're getting dirtier than when you started berry.
30:45Good girl.
30:47I think we're good.
30:48Hooray!
30:50All go and dry out.
30:51Go on, have a shake, little girl.
30:52There you are, Bonnie.
30:54My berry's come back.
30:57That's another job off the list.
30:59Yeah.
31:00We're getting there.
31:01Getting there.
31:03There's a light at the end of the tunnel.
31:13Over in Thirsk, it's shenanigans out of wedlock that have been concerning Jean and Steve.
31:19Come on, donkeys.
31:23Although Sybil's had some unwanted attention from Fernando.
31:28Get off her.
31:29Her foaling emergency proved to be a false alarm.
31:33Ah, Mr and Mrs Green.
31:35Hello, young Peter Wright.
31:36But Peter has a plan.
31:38To find out if her bump is baby or belly.
31:44Like a lump on that side.
31:46Yeah, a lot of fat.
31:47That's fat.
31:48I hope.
31:49If she's not pregnant, she'll have to go on a diet.
31:51A bit lower down, though.
31:53Yes, there is belly down there, isn't there?
31:55Shall we take some blood and find out?
31:57Yep.
31:57Right, OK.
32:00All right, Seb.
32:02Got you.
32:03Don't pull me over because I'm going to go.
32:06Right, we're all done.
32:08That's fat.
32:11Whether they're parents or not...
32:13It'll be very interesting.
32:15I should be able to tell from that whether she's pregnant or not.
32:18...Fernando and Sybil are clearly one happy couple.
32:21I think they like being out, don't they?
32:22Oh, they do.
32:23Which has Peter and Steve discussing their own partnerships.
32:29I don't know about you, but I tumble asleep.
32:32I do, especially on a settee.
32:34Oh, I know.
32:35And then I get a nudge in the ribs from my wife, from Lynn, waking up.
32:39And I just say, I'm just resting my eyes.
32:42I'm just similar, please.
32:45But you and Jean have always been that content, haven't you?
32:49Aye, aye, we have.
32:50We've never fallen out.
32:51How many folks can say that?
32:54Not many at all.
32:56But if you don't mind me saying, you're very placid.
32:59Jean, I wouldn't describe Jean as placid.
33:03Very caring, very generous, very loving, but not very placid.
33:10Works well.
33:11Hey, up, talk of the devil.
33:13No, Mrs. Green.
33:14Put your hand on.
33:15Oh, Mrs. Green.
33:17My belly is expanding at a fast rate of knots again.
33:21If I eat too many of these, there'll be a suggestion that I may be pregnant if I'm not careful, so...
33:26Right, well, thank you very much.
33:30I'll send this off to the lab, and we'll see what they have to say.
33:34And I'll be in touch, as the saying goes.
33:37All right, I like keeping in touch.
33:39All right, Mrs. Green.
33:40See you, Peter.
33:40Thank you, Steve.
33:41Goodbye, Peter.
33:46Still to come...
33:47I've got some news for you.
33:49...will Sybil and Fernando need a shotgun wedding...
33:52The blood sample result tells us...
33:54...which will take on a very different meaning on Shona's big day.
33:58They just need everything...
34:00They're not exploding.
34:02...to go to plan.
34:03It's all stuck on that middle pole.
34:04Someone's getting sacked out there.
34:06Near Huddersfield...
34:18All right, let's go, lads.
34:19...at Shona and James' home-cum-wedding venue...
34:23Best score of first time, this one.
34:24Yeah, well, someone's getting sacked out there.
34:26...it's still all hands on deck, trying to get everything covered before the big day.
34:32It's all stuck on that middle pole.
34:33On entertainment duties, Shona's dad, Richard, is aiming high.
34:40What do you think? A bit close?
34:42A little bit.
34:45Shona's wanted to have a bit of a demonstration shoot after the marriage.
34:48These are the exploding fireballet things that you stick inside the clay.
34:54And when you hit the clay, it goes with a bang.
34:57A bit more drama.
34:58Theoretical.
34:59So far...
35:01Right, pull.
35:02This isn't the big hit Richard was expecting.
35:06We're not exploding.
35:08Do you know what?
35:09Maybe it's because you're hitting the clay, not the firebird.
35:11Pull.
35:12Nice.
35:14Pull.
35:15Yeah.
35:16Pull.
35:17That's as Harry's teepee team hit their target.
35:20Pull.
35:20Yeah.
35:20Come on, that's better, that's better.
35:22Things are looking up.
35:25Yeah.
35:26Yeah.
35:26Woo!
35:26Wow.
35:29This is so cool.
35:31Yeah, it's looking good now, isn't it?
35:32Yeah.
35:32Getting there.
35:33Yeah.
35:34I'm going to start bringing the furniture in.
35:36And the disco ball.
35:36And the disco ball, yeah.
35:37The main thing that's going up.
35:39Dance floor down.
35:40This morning I was really stressed.
35:43There is still quite a lot to do.
35:45I feel so much better because this morning we just had a flat area of land, but now we've
35:51actually got a wedding venue, so that's a really good feeling.
35:54Right, Sansa?
35:55Shall we get on with some more jobs?
35:57Shall we?
35:57Yeah.
35:57Come on, then.
36:07In Thirsk, at Gene and Steve's farm, it's the moment of truth for their donkeys.
36:15Come on, Fernando!
36:17Because Peter's back, with Sybil's pregnancy test result.
36:22Morning.
36:24Morning, Peter.
36:25Morning, young man.
36:25How are you?
36:26I like it when you say that, Mrs Green.
36:28I've got some news for you.
36:30The blood sample result tells us that she's not pregnant.
36:34It was just purely a grass belly, a food belly.
36:37And it's all good living.
36:39So we're going to have to cut down on the food that she's given and treats.
36:44I've got this sign that I'm going to put so that Sybil doesn't get fed.
36:49Put them on the gates on the footpath.
36:52Yes.
36:52Because that's where folks mainly feed.
36:54I'm going to find another sign to put it on your daughter, to say, please do not feed the farmer's wife.
37:00Drown me?
37:02I'm down it.
37:04So Fernando's castration...
37:06It's good that Sybil isn't pregnant, I think.
37:10...wasn't too late.
37:12Well, it was Shona that came and helped us castrate Fernando, wasn't it?
37:16Well, she's getting married, you know.
37:18Is she?
37:19Yeah.
37:20So how many years have you done now, Steve?
37:22Forty-six.
37:23Forty-six years?
37:24It took us three months and ten days to get caught and engaged and married.
37:29And we got engaged in a week, didn't we?
37:31Less than a week.
37:32So it was a whirlwind then?
37:33Yes, we're in a hayfield and I'd marry him and I'd say, yeah.
37:34In a hayfield?
37:35Yeah.
37:36Oh, I know what happens with farmers in hayfields.
37:37Oh, yes.
37:38Well, congratulations to her.
37:39Yeah, I'll pass on your best wishes to her, shall I?
37:40Oh, yeah.
37:41Right.
37:42She's a grand lass, you know.
37:43Let's hope she has as many years happily married as you two have.
37:56We'll drink to that.
37:57We'll drink to that, yeah.
37:59Cheers, Mrs Green.
38:00Shona and James.
38:02The big day has finally arrived.
38:14And the finishing touches are being applied to this very personal wedding venue.
38:27So grateful to be able to have it at home.
38:29It just feels really special.
38:31While Shona's bridal party are getting the full makeover.
38:34It's all getting quite exciting.
38:37James is tending to his four-legged groomsmen.
38:41Sit.
38:42Sit.
38:43Good boy.
38:44Are you ready for the wedding?
38:45Yeah.
38:46Good boy.
38:50The nerves haven't quite kicked in yet.
38:52Everything is just all go at the moment.
38:54Look, the animals are keeping me nice and busy.
38:58All the animals are good to go.
39:00Barry and Bonnie are nice and clean still.
39:02The sheep are down the bottom of the field.
39:03The chickens are there in the coop.
39:04They're quite happy.
39:05And the bride is nearly there.
39:07I like it.
39:08I'll be like it.
39:09I can go through words of nervousness.
39:10Cheers.
39:11Cheers.
39:12It's the perfect setting for a vet's wedding.
39:13Animals all around.
39:14Good job there's plenty of vets around in case anything happens.
39:15I know Shona's going to look beautiful and the farm looks absolutely stunning.
39:27When you've been getting mucky and covered in cow poo all day, to put some heels on and
39:32a nice dress, it just feels really special.
39:35There's just time for a fitting farm wedding blessing from Shona's sister and maid of honour,
39:41Sarah.
39:42In the name of the sheep.
39:44The only horses.
39:45In the name of the sheep.
39:46The only horses.
39:47In the name of the sheep and Bonnie.
39:49I now signify you ready to wet.
39:51ready to wet ladies and gentlemen can you be upstanding for the bride
