00:30Welcome back to Rides Down Under Workshop Wars.
00:34On today's show, Mark and I jump in the HG panel van.
00:39This thing is a work of art.
00:41We take it through the Dandenong Ranges, talk about a little bit of the history.
00:45The boys from Sue Performance have a workshop full to the brim of builds and Todd updates
00:50us on their progress.
00:52We check out the styling automotive 911 Porsche and the Ford Bronco.
00:57Luke from Evil Garage begins work on the Oz Wheels HQ Smoke Bomber rear tubs.
01:04First up, we head to Chrysler's on the Murray race day, as Alan from Valleygrunt hits the
01:09track and Shane takes Rob Crosby's Frankencharger for a blast.
01:27So, we're at Chrysler's on the Murray again.
01:29This is our annual pilgrimage up to Albury and we've been coming here since there was
01:33maybe 20 cars.
01:34So, it's been a long time.
01:35There's probably close to 800 to 900 cars up here this weekend and today is race day.
01:41So, we're at the Logic Center and we're going to stretch the legs a little bit on Frankencharger
01:46behind me which is ready to go and my Chrysler by Chrysler except this year I'm going to do
01:52it a little bit different.
01:53Shane's going to drive Frankencharger for Rob and we've got myself driving the Chrysler
02:00by Chrysler.
02:01I'm also going to let Alan drive the Chrysler by Chrysler, so a little bit of a difference
02:06for Alan who's got a 74 Gallant.
02:09We're going from the 1.3 litre to the stroked 5.9 litre, so a little bit of a power difference.
02:16Let's see if mum comes out of the car, the passenger seat having a heart attack going,
02:20oh my god, or I think he'll be just fine.
02:24I'm going to have to hit it and fall off or else you will lose it around this corner.
02:29Nice and tight.
02:30Hard on the gutter.
02:31Hard on the gutter.
02:32Hard on the gutter.
02:33That's it.
02:34Right.
02:35Nice.
02:36Turn into it.
02:37Right.
02:38Right.
02:39Roll it down.
02:40Roll it down.
02:41Right.
02:42Stop.
02:43Oh god.
02:44Relax.
02:45Don't get this one hard.
02:46You've got to feather it.
02:47Really big, long sleeper.
02:48I know.
02:49I know.
02:50Stop coming in too hard.
02:51Relax.
02:52Ever since I was a little kid, I've always wanted to go on the Chrysler by Chrysler.
02:56Go race, for myself at least, and this year I've finally convinced my parents, because
03:08my own car isn't here this year, I've finally convinced my parents to get my foot on the
03:14pedal on the Chrysler by Chrysler and actually race it around a track, so first time driving
03:18it and hopefully everything goes well.
03:21We've all watched Alan grow up over the years on rides down under, building his Pontiac and
03:28all of that.
03:29However, Alan got his licence late last year.
03:32He's never driven Mum's car.
03:35It's very talky, it's very fast, but it handles.
03:38But I have faith in him because he has taken his own car out and he's done the dirt drags
03:43in Chopped and gotten it sideways, so he sort of knows how to handle his little car.
03:49A little bit of a difference driving a big car with a lot of torque and a lot of power,
03:55but the way I learned how to handle my first car was in the dirt and he does it pretty well,
04:00so we'll see how he goes.
04:02I'm used to driving a Mitsubishi Glant with about 67 horsepower on a good day.
04:08The Chrysler by Chrysler has about 500 horsepower, so it's going to be a very big turnaround for
04:16what I used to drive.
04:17So, yeah, I've grown up around this my whole life and yeah, it's in my blood.
04:22I'm used to it.
04:24Hopefully I'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
04:26Yeah, fingers crossed I don't end up in the dirt.
04:34If you take a flashback to season two, I believe there's a little segment where Alan says in
04:39his little voice, all I want to do is get into Mum's Pontiac and do skids everywhere or something
04:45to that effect, and he hasn't changed.
04:47When Mum can no longer drive her car, I want to take it and do burnouts every day in it.
04:54It's been eight years and he's still going, I'm just going to do power skids down the track,
04:59but if that's the case, you'll probably see me slap him across the back of the helmet in
05:02the GoPro.
05:03I'm planning on taking it slow.
05:07Even how much I want to do a big power skid, I'm planning on taking it slow.
05:12I'm pretty sure Dad would be pretty unhappy if I did a big power skid down the straight.
05:17Just enjoy the rest of the race, okay?
05:22Sorry.
05:23I know, boring.
05:33Yeah, Dad's probably going to do some sideways action around the corners in Frankensharta and
05:39hopefully not end up in the dirt like multiple years before.
05:44There's always a little bit of competition between Shane and myself.
05:48The only person I care about beating is Shane.
05:52Doesn't matter who else is on the track, it's just a little bit of husband-wife competition.
05:56And sometimes he wins and sometimes I win.
05:59But I think I'm going to have the advantage over Frankensharta because he's still got the
06:03skinny little front tyres on it and we haven't finished setting up his suspension for turning
06:08corners.
06:09It's more set up for straight line.
06:11So, we'll see how we go.
06:14I've driven this track quite a few times.
06:17Right early on when I first got together with Shane and we were up here.
06:22I've driven it, I don't know if this is my third or fourth year solid where we've been
06:26driving it around the track.
06:27Driven my Pontiac around the track.
06:29It's quite a tricky little track, but it's a good track.
06:31So, you can't get up too much speed to get into too much trouble.
06:35But it's good to just blow the cobwebs out of the car and see how she handles and how
06:41she goes.
06:42And really, for a young fellow like Alan, it's important to learn how to handle a
06:46car when she does lose control and how to get out of that situation safely.
06:50Coming up, Mark and I jump in the HG panel band.
07:13We take it through the Dandenong Ranges.
07:15Here in Forbes Machinery House are your Aussie-owned one-stop shop for everything workshop machinery.

08:11We've got you covered.
08:12Our staff are trade qualified and can provide you with the right advice.
08:16When you purchase a machine from Hare and Forbes Machinery House, it's not just a sale.
08:21It's a partnership.
08:22It's not just a横 at the Alright, so we're lucky enough to be in this H&G panel van.
08:45panel van now I'm Paul that's Mark our last names are the same because for
08:55those who are playing at home he's my old man he's the one who educated me
09:01brought me up and he used to tell me and educate me on what the names of things
09:07were when I was younger so a panel van to me has always been known as a shag and
09:13wagon so in this HG shag and wagon the funny thing was I didn't know what a
09:19shag and wagon was until I was pretty much a teenager there I am a little
09:26five-year-old running around going shag and wagon shag and wagon no idea but this
09:30is a shag and wagon you can put a bed back there there is a pillow back there but
09:35aside from all that BS it is an absolute work of art and a cracker to be sitting
09:40in right now after doing the work on it and the work on it that we did what was
09:46it we've just basically refined the package giving him another hundred odd
09:53kilowatts at the wheels so hundred and what is that 130 something horsepower at
09:57the wheels improvement and just made it give it some personality make it nice and
10:03drivable and you've got to remember that this thing makes nearly 500 horsepower at the
10:07tires and these cars are super light compared to modern cars a modern a VF
10:15sedan for example weighs 1890 so nearly 1900 kilos this thing weighs 1200 kilos so
10:26the power to weight ratio is he's really cool now powerhouse behind this is an LS we
10:32did he came in it was an LS3 wasn't it yeah it's a VF series LS3 that we did
10:38camshaft on custom set of headers the rest of the exhaust system which is
10:43stainless steel purge tick welded to make it a work of art to match the actual car
10:49itself yeah yeah it's such a good car it's you know the package is really there
10:55we've still got some more work to do which we're going to do over time as his budget
10:59allows it's got an aftermarket front end aftermarket rear end all of that sort of
11:04stuff it needs a little bit of work to get it right geometry wise it's really
11:07good it steers nice it's just it's got some squeaks and rattles and things that
11:12we need to iron out for him what was cool about this project was he did the
11:17majority of it at home yeah and they're guys from Luke's custom fabrication so
11:23that's shout out to Luke and Jesse they did the bodywork on this thing and it has
11:28color so well it is it's it's a bit of a bit of a showstopper the paint and panel
11:34on this thing it really is it's a cool color candy cola brandy so he made up the
11:40color and got to name it himself yeah no it is cool everywhere we go people are like
11:45wow look at that thing look at that what color is that you know obviously it's not a
11:48factory color but there's nothing factory about this and that's good you know
11:54there's so many things with these cars that weren't great back in the day and if
11:58you've got the budget to rest I mod it and put a decent drive line in it and
12:03power steering and all the nice things that you can do these days you know fuel
12:07injection and six-speed manual and under dash this and you know do everything
12:13really nice why wouldn't you why wouldn't you do it better than it was
12:18because let's face it you know a carburetted three hour eight or god forbid two three back
12:25in the day wasn't yeah it wasn't the best car well it's certainly not a 500 horsepower LS
12:32now I want to talk about the headers in particular on this so we modified the
12:36intake pipe you know we did the header back exhaust but their headers I mean
12:41they're a stepped inch and seven eight massive header that we had to fit in this engine bay
12:48that's painted as well because the whole cars are working hard yeah yeah the head the headers you
12:55don't have a lot of room ultimately with with an LS and you know power steering and fabricated front
13:03end and all that sort of stuff there's not a lot of real estate in there to get the right size pipe so
13:08it does take a little bit of time and and a bit of thought you know snaking them all in there and
13:14then getting them into a we've made a four and a one with a merge collector and all that stuff to get
13:19all that in there and get it all working the way it does it's quite tricky and Sean's done a
13:25man give us a job on all that they are really really nice so stay and we TIG welded those sent them off
13:31to the guys at high performance coating HBC and Lee and Gutter coated them throw it all back together
13:36tuned it up on the dyno got the power out of it given a personality as well we've made the car
13:43effectively sound and and act from the engine point of view the way it should the way the customer
13:50wanted I mean yeah it's got that old school though you know it's fairly camby so you pull up and it's
13:56nice and lumpy and all that but the good thing with late model particularly the LS platform you can
14:02have something that's camby and grumpy and all that but it's got the drivability with the fuel
14:08injection you can just get the thing perfect it's as smooth as silk you know even right down a thousand
14:13rpm it'll it'll pull away in fourth gear it's um it's why I guess so many people LS different
14:21cars when they rest home on them but I mean it just goes to show no we didn't do the full build on
14:27this but we wanted to feature it because I mean you know take the hat off to the customer he's done
14:33such a great job getting it to the point where it is he even sent us in photos of the day he bought it
14:40what it was history of it he's documented the whole thing it is a real showpiece of a car I mean
14:48he gave me this list of all the mods that he did and the producer said to me Paul remember it
14:55remember the list and just read it out to the camera like there's no way I can remember that
15:00so I'm just going to shoot through a few of the modifications relocated wiper motor under the dash
15:05in dash seven inch stereo demister vents reconfigured tunnel refurbished smoothed out the
15:13fire wall chassis connectors I don't know what that is mini tub electric fuel pump in tank sort of
15:21makes sense retractable seat belts maloo seats that is such a comfy thing and I actually didn't think
15:30of it until I just read it then about how comfortable it is coming up the boys from
15:35Sue performance have a workshop full to the brim and Todd updates us on their progress
15:43chance this equipment is a distributor for a global leading brands such as been back
15:52certain Coney buys bath so we spy voice lifting equipment specialized testing equipment throughout
15:58Australia in all segments whether it's a car dealership right away through to a car enthusiast
16:04or a truck dealership right away through the truck enthusiast the difference we see with the
16:08BendPak hoist is not just with the ergonomical technology that we use when we're operating
16:13hoist and lift the hoist it's all about safety and longevity we can put anyone under the hoist
16:18and we know they're safe with a BendPak hoist there's no complicated buttons to use when we
16:24want the hoist to go up we press the button in return then when we want to lower the hoist down it's
16:28just a matter of lifting a handle and that releases the safety locks we just press the
16:33button and it steadily brings that car down in our BendPak range we have the two post hoist which very
16:41very popular but we do the four post hoist and that's anything from a car to a truck in the four
16:45post range so the versatility for whatever you use and in any type of application in a workshop we've
16:52got the hoist there to accommodate Ben yeah so we currently got a lot of projects on the go very
17:20exciting we're all very busy we're just smashing out a heap of metal work at the minute so we've
17:24got got the Cadillac project which is the brand new chassis Morrison chassis with the LS running gear
17:30typical nine inch that we do on every build we sort of started in the back with all the rush repairs
17:36and we're slowly moving forward Hayden's done all the boot floors all the rear tabs reworked around
17:43the rear boot lid section new hinges on the boot lid and now we're slowly moving forward into the
17:49front tunnel over the new transmission and the front floor pants so currently Hayden's doing the front
18:02floor pans he's finished the transmission pan which is a bolt-in unit we left that original just really
18:07reshaped it to suit the new six-speed automatic from there what we did is we cut out the floor
18:12underneath the factory bench seat and we're putting a brand new flat floor in so we can pretty much take
18:18the VF Commodore front seats and then mold them into the new floor pan so we're going to start with
18:24a flat surface and then from there we can rework the brackets and weld them in today we're making some
18:33floor pans for the center so we can get the two bucket seats out of the VF Commodore fitted and the
18:38rails we plasma cut out a patch for the floor and then laid out some beads trimmed it up it's got it
18:47be rolled cut into the center for the tunnel to get put in and start rolling them in
18:53we had to cut the center out because it used to have a bench seat so the rails for the bench seat
19:12but on the outside and the new seats that are going in the the rails are obviously there's four rails not
19:18two so we had to make the centerpiece flat and tapered I had to rework all the floor bracing to suit the
19:28more flat floor and add a bit more strength into it as always there's heaps of work involved just for the
19:36you know to make things work but at the end of the day it has to be done folding measuring like laying
19:42out the beads and pre-stretching steel yeah
19:56yeah so we've pretty well had the car on the jig for a long time where we've done most of the rust repairs
20:01it's a little bit easier to work at you know chest height stomach height rather than being on the
20:05ground or just on little stands so we're nearly at the stage where we can take it off the uh jig at
20:11the minute got the billet specialties wheels which have got the big fine spokes very cadillac like so
20:16today what we'll do is we'll use the hoist we'll get the caddy up in the air throw the wheels on it and
20:21for the first time we'll see it on the ground
20:45we've got the caddy on the ground and it looks awesome with the new wheels we've got a fair bit
20:50more metal work to do we haven't really touched the front guard yet so they need tweaking one was
20:54really dented so hopefully we'll get that working we might play with the stance a little bit get a
21:00little bit lower but all in all i think it really looks awesome
21:03coming up we head back to crisis on the murray for a show and shine day and check out bad fish
21:19us wheels is a 164 scale diecast manufacturing business so we produce manufacture and distribute
21:33all around australia 164 scale diecast cars we started out with two different body styles a panel
21:38van and a hq four-door and now in series two we have a total of 24 different bodies including xaxb falcons
21:45xwxy falcons into a hxle in the holdens and some monaros thrown in there as well
21:57diff king is your one-stop shop for australia's toughest diffs check out our distrack halicle
22:03limited slip diff it's the ultimate traction with forged billet seven halicle gears a differential
22:10transfers the torque and power produced by the engine to the wheels enabling the wheels to run
22:16at different speeds to maintain traction as and when the situation demands we supply a variety of
22:23differential centers for different applications such as single wheel true track e-locker cars locker
22:32and arb locker torque is passed from the engine to the differential via the transmission and tail shaft
22:40whether it's for your 4x4 application or muscle car we have you covered go to diffking.com.au
22:58saturday here at chrysler's on the murray another beautiful day yesterday was race day out at the
23:02track and today we're here for the show and shine focus this year at chrysler's on the murray is on
23:08american mopars so lots of really cool looking american chryslers cruising around today now the
23:14special thing that's happened today is alan number one apprentice we were contacted by wayne who was
23:21an apprentice for chrysler down in st kilda in 1978 and wayne has handed down his apprenticeship book
23:28that chrysler handed him to alan he's passed the torch on to the next generation learning how to build
23:34these cool chrysler we've had the car about 10 years we bought it it was a typical american mexican
23:43paint job over the original color red we we sort of bought it got it got it regoed and then went on
23:49to molest it from there we pulled the original 273 out of it and we stuck in a 611 cube hemi still
23:56running a 727 gearbox extensively worked we've got a lot of gear done in the gearbox to take the sort of
24:01power got a tubular coil over front end it's got a four-length rear end iq10 dash for engine management
24:082500 elite heltech with fuel injected making about a thousand and forty horsepower at the flywheel
24:14well originally we bought the car we wanted to do a bo29 tribute car and it sort of progressed in
24:21different stages along the way we went to carlisle last year and saw the fish stick candy cooter cars and
24:27stuff like that whilst i already had the idea in my mind what i wanted that really cemented the track
24:32we're going to go down so then we went to exotic customs and we gave him a brief and he started
24:39putting together from there i could not have asked for a for a better finish in what it is the hours that
24:44he put into it was just just tops he's is a great guy great painter
24:51this is a 1970 plymouth cooter vehicle car so it's a 446 barrel factory numbers matching i converted it
25:03to right hand drive 40 years ago when i bought it it was a basket case in a few different sheds
25:10then in 1990 i took it off the road and repainted it and then four years ago i decided i needed power
25:18steering i was getting too old too weak so to put the power steering blocks in it i had to remake the
25:24exhaust so i did the whole car top the bottom nuts and bolts everything there's no replacement panels on
25:30it's it is a survivor it's a 1969 dodge charger i was looking for cars back in the day and i looked at
25:44a few cars here in melbourne and i come across this and i just like to love the shape of them ended up
25:50buying it but it was that that car that had that marks you know the shopping trolley marks as i used
25:54to say all the way around it it was a california car when i bought it i had the build sheet which i
25:58found underneath the back seat you know so i i digged into certain things and what it was is what
26:03it was a 383 big block car but yeah as i'm going through building it and buying new parts and bits
26:08and pieces i you know there's nothing better than having a hemi in one of these
26:14it's a 1972 valiant vh 770 original car dad owned it he bought that brand new in the day from perennial
26:23brothers in bankstown still got the original lock books and keys and all that kind of stuff so it's just
26:27been in the family all the way through the name came from my kids i'm not acquired you know not
26:32very quiet so they call me i'm always cranky so cranky one came off with the name we've modified the
26:38car quite heavily from the engine to the drive line to the diff the interior the dash the wiring the
26:42electronics it's supercharged it sells a 265 hemi 4.3 litre now it's a 543 cubic inch big block motorbike
26:51and they're trying to get a 10.71 blower and a joe blot injector it's a little bit surreal it's been a
27:0010-year journey and the first sort of several very very rocky and the last three or so with the guys
27:06from bellygrunt done a great job really confident with the build it drove up really nice the five
27:12speed made the drive up a human perfect it was a great guy really really driveable transformed the
27:18car it was originally a three-speed car it certainly transformed the car it was originally sort of
27:22a 200 horsepower car we put a an e39 special cam in it so she pumps out about 320 horses yeah a lot more
27:31go and uh and just the noise you know the induction roar it's all about that next we check out the
27:47styling automotive 911 porsche and the ford bronco
27:50so pacemaker is uh traditionally known as pacemaker headers and as a company we are an exhaust
28:04manufacturer it has its origins in the 1970s as a company where we're bordering on the 50-year
28:09category now and we've got our origins in our product range that we still make today
28:13our exhaust systems are all made from 409 grade stainless steel it's a 1.5 mil wall thick
28:19all fabricated and built here in australia pacemaker have developed advanced technologies
28:25in our mufflers and our cats we have a very special high flow cat setup and pacemaker also use long
28:30strand fiberglass in our mufflers and double-skinned walls as well there's a gain in both performance
28:35and economy economy is picked up because the engine is not having to work as hard as what it once was
28:40before to to remove the exhaust gases from the engine but obviously by doing so that frees up the
28:44engine and allows the performance to improve each vehicle is different but you know across the board
28:48a set of headers can generally pick you up you know around a 10 percent gain and it can vary depending
28:53on on what you do from there all reputable exhaust shops and the mechanical workshops and performance
28:58shops stock pacemaker products and you can get yours there
29:09just recently had another queensland porsche club member send us one of his vehicles that we're
29:22working with him to restore we've been assigned the repair and paint on the body shelf it has a few
29:28casualty spots that they all come up with then a few signs of some previous bad behavior so we're here
29:34to rectify all of that we've got a whole bunch of new panels that we're going to use and we've got
29:38some fabricating and repair work that's required to be done so we're looking forward to doing that
29:43one and bringing this one back to life the engine's been rebuilt by the customer and he's done a great
29:47job as well and we'll be working together to bring this thing back to life yeah we enjoy working with
29:54the customers obviously we do the job from start to finish but we also enjoy the customers that want to
29:58get their hands dirty and we'll enjoy the customers that have a passion for our trade and also know the
30:04skill sets required to achieve a really high-end result it's not just a backyard sport it's a
30:10profession and i think these people enjoy the fact that they get to hand over the specialty parts of
30:15the job so that the vision is kept all the way through
30:27carrera three is a good car they are sorting some good numbers these days so hence why we're fixing this
30:33one up and going to get it looking its best and then this car will be up for sale once it's finished as
30:38well this will be a standard vehicle back to its factory settings it'll have everything that was
30:45issued to the vehicle on sale or purchase so this vehicle just be brought back to its original standard
30:51and up for sale
31:03the little 911 is a good little car and it's fairly robust they're fairly simple at turns they can
31:08punch a fair bit of horsepower out of them for a little air-cooled motor they're fun to drive and
31:13they take you back in time with the way that they handle and steer and then obviously there's a whole
31:18another sport that we can drive into to enhance all of that and make them just a really good vehicle overall
31:40this customer recently just purchased this backdated 911 and it looks really great however i was
31:46complaining that it doesn't run properly it doesn't steer properly i mean it's very bouncy as there's
31:52a few fundamental problems and a lot of the times when these guys backdate these cars they put all the
31:58the go fast bits on but it tends to fight itself and so this car doesn't handle or drive that well at
32:03all so it's come to us for us to start again and which we will just pull everything out and go back
32:10over it all and put the right settings in and just get the car driving really nicely and handling really
32:14well the way it's meant to and not bouncing all over the road
32:23this 911 backdate is just a cool car to drive it's fun to drive it's got the 3.6 liter motor into it
32:29carbureted it hammers it sounds cool goes fast it just needs this little tweak to you know fix these
32:35last little components they're just a great car to drive around in they're a great cruiser
32:40a great sunday driver and they're also an awesome daily if you can do it
32:53yeah it's cool getting one of these cars in because we're not just a repair and paint body
32:57shop we do the full mechanical work on these cars so another car for a mechanical job to be done and
33:03we enjoy doing them as well it's a brand that we love and i generally have grown to love them over
33:08the years i love the porsche i love the brand i enjoy the cars i enjoy working on the cars and
33:13the old saying i like bringing the wheelbarrow back to the uh supposed to say ferrari but we'll say 911
33:19at this stage
33:23yeah the bronco has a high performance motor installed into it not by us and the customer feels it's a bit
33:29aggressive so we're going to be removing that motor and sticking a coyote motor into it and just
33:34tricking it up a little bit make it a bit more user friendly and a bit easier to drive so we're
33:39just in the means of engineering all of that at the moment yeah i mean i guess we have a lot of
33:43room in there to work with and we can modify whatever we need to an aggressive motor is cool to
33:49have but sometimes not very drivable and just by having that newer coyote motor in there we'll be able
33:54to tune it it'll be a way better drive it'll be smoother and it'll still just have just as much horsepower
33:59when you need it coming up luke from evil garage begins work on the oz wheels hq smoke bomber rear tubs
34:23hi i'm colin if you're looking for tyres mechanical service or just general advice come on down to
34:28moody ponds tire we offer a full range of servicing from tyres to brakes to all sorts of general
34:33mechanical repairs every vehicle will get an inspection to make sure the vehicle is safe in
34:38terms of tyres we do a large range of tyres from the smallest lawnmower tyre right the way up to the
34:43largest earthmover tyre we do wheel alarmants we do batteries anytime you need any tyres just come and see us
34:58in the morning jace came in we started getting this firewall going with the wiper motor and regulator
35:12we decided to try and make them look similar to try and make the front end look somewhat symmetrical
35:18i've drawn a series of lines on that side to give myself a bit of a reference and this area that you
35:23can see that i've marked out we'll simply just run a bead roll around that and that will be pushed out
35:29to us about eight to ten millimeters fairly simple fairly basic but it will be so obvious that we've
35:36copied that side and won't take us too much time to get it done we've just started with a piece of
35:41flat sheet metal 1.2 millimeter stick the purpose of the bead roll is to put strength in the panel yet we
35:49are actually using it also to mimic what the factory side is but a bead line or a bead roll panel or even
35:57some swages it gives strength to the steel so it doesn't flop around so we're using it for two
36:02reasons one we're mimicking that side and it will give this strength so we rolled it through the bead
36:11roller gave it a quick hammer up made it flat and that's the finished product very simple but effective
36:17and ties in with the other side and without taking too much time a little bit of hammering and slight
36:21tweak in this corner and ready to go
36:31today we're actually full steam ahead in fabricating the new three mil tubs straight up this morning
36:37ethan started working getting the new tubs in the car so first we got some three mil ethan spent some
36:45time getting that in and profiling it to the outside of the car and then we've spent some time
36:50getting the round bar attached to that profile and then we're able to set the side panel up and then
36:56template that out to suit it so yes definitely a lot of work doing it this way
37:04normally we make them out of either 1.2 or 1.6 depending on the application
37:09and doing them that way we're able to bead roll a nice 40 or 50 mil radius up around the top edge
37:16just to give it that nice smooth look these are full three millimeter tubs top sides so a lot harder
37:24to work with and we weren't able to bead roll them so luke and i came up with an idea of getting some
37:30round bar rolled up and we've cut 90 degree sections out of the round bar to make a radius so the finished
37:38product is going to look like a nice bead rolled 1.6 millimeter tub but in fact they're going to be
37:44three mil we're making three mil tubs because burnout car so when the tire pops it's not going
37:50to bend the tub like three mil strong but by doing that we couldn't have a radius edge and we didn't
37:55want to have a square tub because we couldn't put it in the bead roll and just roll an edge like you
37:58normally could on a 1.6 tub so we actually got some pipe bent and then we've cut down the guts and a 90 out
38:06to give us two rolled edges for each tub so when we weld them in it'll look like it's a rolled tub
38:12so yeah we just got a bit of straight bar bent her up and got that in with multiple pieces of these
38:18tubs and being three mil nothing flexes you can't hammer it around at all really it's been a two-person
38:26process for most of the day just trying to make sure that we're getting them spot on because we want
38:31these things to look like show quality tubs so you've got to get them really nice make sure the
38:37gaps are good as we're welding it and ground up nice
38:46getting the chassis rails sorted after just cutting the factory ones out has been a bit of a process
38:51just because there's so many profiles and shapes that up and down vertically as well as in and out
38:57horizontally so it's not too time consuming to temple them out of a bit of cardboard or a bit of
39:03board then when you transfer it onto three mill trying to roll and fold a piece of three mill if
39:08it's not square this shape can deviate so quickly so there's a lot of work and a lot of time goes into
39:16replacing a chassis rail in the car
39:18it's about that guy being a burnout car we've decided to go with a three mill tub there's
39:31definitely a lot of working gone for three mill like the difference between just cutting a tub down
39:36the middle doing a split tub and then what we've done we're cutting everything out and starting from
39:41scratch and having to move the rails so make custom rails underneath personally alone over the last week i
39:46think i've done just under 100 hours in fabrication in the tubs and the rails underneath so there's
39:52definitely a lot of work that goes into it compared to just a normal street car that just gets a split
39:57tub in it i spoke to jesse about doing something cool and different so we're going to do some air
40:07jacks on it you see them in the v8 supercars when they pull in pit lane all the time car goes up two
40:11seconds they rattle the tires off they're out their door but today we're going to start mounting them in the
40:16front uh with our tube chassis when the tube's gone to go to the firewall instead of it being about
40:21150 mil section of the standard chassis it's actually two tube rails so there's left it's
40:26about 100 mil gap which we think is where these are going to work nice this is just on a standard
40:30compressor we've got about 300 mil travel while ethan's been up the back darren's been busy at the
40:35front making the top and bottom plates to house the air jacks there's not much room up in between the
40:42chassis rails to get the air jack so we've had to do a bit of scalloping there and the air jacks being
40:48quite long need a top and bottom mounting point so darren's made a top mount to go on the body
40:55bottom mount to go on the chassis rail so we've had them mocked in and we've given them a quick
40:59test drive this morning and we lifted the front off the ground so the boys have been absolutely
41:14killing it today they've got the air jacks mounted in the front and they've been working on the tubs
41:19like insanely well i've always said with these cars to a point they become art whether it's the noise
41:27whether it's the shaping of the body panels it goes away from being a vehicle it comes a part of
41:33your personality and who you are and this talks a lot about these guys right because if you have a
41:38look over this car it is absolutely incredible the intention to detail and the things they've added in
41:44all over the car is just insane coming in today having a look at what the boys have been doing over
41:51the last few weekends the back end of the car the tubs man what they're doing there is fantastic
41:55it looks amazing watching these guys work on this is it sort of blows my mind that they can
42:01but this car is a bare shell and in the end it's going to be highly modified and a working fully
42:08functioning car done by a couple of blokes in a shed what they're doing is unbelievable i
42:14lay awake at night thinking about how it's going it's crazy like i'm just so excited that it's that
42:19it's taking place and and the guys that we've got doing it are doing it because i don't think anyone
42:23else will be able to do it to the standard these guys are doing it ethan's done a great job today
42:27getting the driver's side tub fully finished chassis rails fully finished he's got the tub on the
42:33passenger side all welded in the whole inside of the boot is all going to be smooth and painted satin
42:38black we're leaning towards no trim in there at all we want to show everything off and show all the work
42:43especially the tubs and the boot floor so a lot of care has been taken to make sure that the tubs
42:48are the same width they're the same height level plum radiuses are the same just so it looks
42:55perfectly symmetrical and just looks really neat
