00:30This time on Rides Down Under, Workshop Wars, we catch up with Dave Styling as he hosts
00:36the Brisbane Porsche Club at Styling Automotive.
00:40Valleygrunt have a new project on the go.
00:42It's the HMAS Valleygrunt Pacer.
00:45Alan gets to work on the rust repairs.
00:48We catch up with Aidan to see the progress on the GMC build at Bespoke Coachworks.
00:53This one you don't want to miss as Mark and I from Donomotive hit the road in the 1,000
00:57horsepower HSV GTS.
01:00We head to Brisbane Motor Museum to see Ron Goodman's 356 in the scene on the screen display.
01:07First up, works continue on the Galaxy chassis as the boys from Superformance fabricate the
01:12new suspension.
01:13So we've got the guys working on the Ford Galaxy project.
01:26Last time around, we dummy mocked up the engine and transmission into position, lowered the
01:31body down onto the chassis, did a little bit of cutting of the firewall, tunnel clearance
01:36to make it fit.
01:37We're quite happy.
01:38Since then, we've test fitted the bonnet.
01:40We've got good bonnet clearance with the new big Coyote engine in there.
01:45So what we're going to do is we're going to get a bit of measuring happening, get the
01:49engine perfectly in the middle of the chassis rails, mock up, trim, cut, get our engine mounts
01:54tack welded in, and then we're going to raise the body off the chassis and rip into more
01:59of the chassis work.
02:00We've got the forelink in the rear to dial in.
02:02We're going to do a bit of bar work to add a bit of extra strength in the middle.
02:05We're going to put triple the amount of horsepower into the chassis than what the original engine
02:09had.
02:10So we want to beef it up a little bit.
02:12It's going to sit low, get the power to the ground with a bit more structure in the middle.
02:16So we'll get the boys to bend up some CDW tube, weld it all in, and then we'll get the body
02:22back on the chassis.
02:23I'll get some axles sorted and we'll get it on the wheels.
02:26We've been working on the 1964 Galaxy job, getting all the chassis prepped and ready
02:37to be finished off and get rolling again.
02:40Typically when these cars were built back in the day, the welds aren't that great and
02:44they normally just do the minimum amount to make them strong enough.
02:49So on the original chassis, we'll go through, clean up any welds that don't look real tidy
02:54and add welds to fully box in the chassis.
02:59So with the chassis work, we've done a fair bit of structural changes with the chassis.
03:02So in the rear, because the customer wanted the car to sit quite low to the ground, we've
03:06bent up new rear rail sections.
03:09In the front, we've grafted in a new IFS system, which is already sort of like a bit of a front
03:14clip, so this car ran spring frockets originally, so we've had to cut those out, graft a new
03:19front into it.
03:21To do this, we're then adding a lot of fish plates around where all the joins are.
03:25Wherever we put a join, ideally we want to double the width of where the join is and put
03:29a fish plate on the outside.
03:32On the rear section, we actually put fish plates on the inside as well, so we did a couple
03:35of tricky joins where it slid into the rail, and then what we're doing is we're fish plating
03:40it out to make it and add a lot more strength back in.
03:44So we're going to, again, putting a lot of power to the ground.
03:47We don't want the chassis to break where we've done any joins.
03:49So fish plate it all.
03:51Once we fish plate it, we'll grind and lineage all our welds smooth so it looks quite tidy.
03:56And from there, we'll be able to bolt it back together and be done.
03:58A lot of these old cars typically don't come with any K-frame structure in between the chassis
04:07to hold it together.
04:09So we added a K-frame to this chassis using CDW roll cage steel.
04:13Bend it up to suit how we want it to be and add some cross-members.
04:17We have our transmission mount come off the tubes as well.
04:20And then we tie it into the four-link chassis brackets to add strength as well.
04:27To get the tubes to fit nicely, there's a bit of a process involved.
04:30It's just something that comes with time and experience and skill that I've learnt over
04:35the years.
04:37You've got to work out your bend radiuses and how much material is going to be used up from
04:41the bend.
04:43It's pretty difficult for the most part to get something first go.
04:47So there's always a lot of double and triple checking what you're doing, like cutting a
04:50small amount off and then checking that it's going to be right.
04:54Because you don't want to just go ahead and cut the whole amount and it turns out that it's
04:57wrong and then you might have wasted two or three metres of tube for nothing.
05:01Doing these chassis jobs, it's not something that you can really rush.
05:03There's hours and hours of work in these things, getting them correct and getting them right.
05:08You've got to make sure that they're symmetrical left to right, you've got to make sure that
05:11nothing's twisted, it's all stuck to the bench correctly.
05:14So part of the process is we've obviously got to weld the underside of everything.
05:18So once the top's mostly welded, we'll flip it upside down, fully weld everything, add
05:23all our fish plates, grind everything that needs to be grinded, clean everything up.
05:28Once all the welding and grinding's done, we're going to start the assembly.
05:31So we can put the diff back in at the four bars, the front suspension, drop the engine
05:37and trans back in, and then we'll be able to slow the body on.
06:02So the boys have done heaps of work the last couple of days.
06:06Got the chassis rolling, got the body back on it, the car's sitting on the ground.
06:10We've still got his new rims to come, they're being made by Shop Wheels in America, but
06:14I think it's going to be really stand out.
06:16I kind of like the patina at the minute, we're still in discussions with the client whether
06:20he wants to paint it again or keep the patina.
06:22It's a really good patina, but overall the stance has changed and it's so much lower to
06:27the ground and I think the customer's going to be really happy.
06:29Now it's all together I reckon it looks great.
06:31Super long car, super low to the ground, then it's something that I would have for sure.
06:45Coming up we head to Valley Grunt Performance as Alan begins the rust repairs on their new
06:50HMAS Valiant Pacer project.
06:57So Pacemaker is traditionally known as Pacemaker Headers and as a company we are an exhaust manufacturer.
07:08It has its origins in the 1970s.
07:10As a company we're bordering on the 50 year category now and we've got our origins in our
07:15product range that we still make today.
07:17Our exhaust systems are all made from 409 grade stainless steel.
07:21It's a 1.5mm wall thick, all fabricated and built here in Australia.
07:26Pacemaker have developed advanced technologies in our mufflers and our cats.
07:30We have a very special high flow cat setup and Pacemaker also use long strand fibreglass
07:34in our mufflers and double skinned walls as well.
07:37There's a gain in both performance and economy.
07:39Economy is picked up because the engine is not having to work as hard as what it once was
07:43before to remove the exhaust gases from the engine.
07:46But obviously by doing so that frees up the engine and allows the performance to improve.
07:50Each vehicle is different but across the board a set of headers can generally pick you up
07:53around a 10% gain and it can vary depending on what you do from there.
07:58All reputable exhaust shops and mechanical workshops and performance shops stock Pacemaker products
08:03and you can get yours there.
08:17Alan has always been an old soul from birth.
08:20The first time we interviewed him on Rides Down Under we were building Warsquare in Season 2
08:26and he was maybe this big and I couldn't get him out of the shop if I tried.
08:31That was all he wanted to do was come into the shop.
08:35I used to joke that with Alan oil ran through his veins instead of blood.
08:40Now he's 18 years old.
08:43He's been working here for two years full time.
08:46Before that he was working here weekends because I couldn't get rid of him.
08:50And he's now got three classic cars of his own.
08:54He calls them my grandchildren.
08:56And today, big day, he got his pee plates.
09:00And he's driving a Gallant because when he was here and we were restoring Alan's Gallant
09:06he fell in love with it and had to get one of his own.
09:09Well I help my mum and dad in the workshop like regularly.
09:12My plan is to be a fabrication engineer when I'm older and then help my dad work on cars.
09:19Just for the rest of my life.
09:21Yeah, my mum is pretty awesome that she can do lots of things like build cars, stuff like that.
09:28When mum can no longer drive her car I want to take it and do burn out every day in it.
09:40For those of you that have been watching Rides Down Under for quite a few seasons now
09:44you would remember seeing this new project we have in the shop, the VG Pacer.
09:49It got picked up at the same time that the bullet charger got picked up.
09:53Now this car was seen on television by the owner in South Australia.
09:59He contacted us, bought it off the person who actually bought this vehicle,
10:04came over, met us all and met Big Al number one apprentice right when he was beginning his apprenticeship
10:11and decided that he was going to give Big Al the opportunity to run point on this car
10:18so that he was in charge of the build.
10:21Initially Alan was a little bit overwhelmed but we were there to hold the reins in
10:25and stop him from mini-tubbing it and putting big massive tyres on the back.
10:33And we've sort of directed him but we're a couple of months into this build now
10:37and he has really come into his stride.
10:41The amount that he has been able to learn building panels, rolling panels, welding
10:48and basically taking on a huge project like this is amazing.
10:55So he's gained in lots of confidence.
10:58Yes he's done a couple of things wrong and he's had to re-go and learn them again
11:03and try and make that panel again but that's all part in the learning process
11:07and lately he's just really found his stride.
11:11So he's nearly now second year apprentice, coach builder and I think he's actually enjoying this work
11:20and as a mum and a boss I'm actually very impressed in the work that he's done.
11:25So, so far I've bent this panel all to shape, cut it to size, it's ready for welding.
11:30I've got to weld up this piece through here and then after all that I can tack it in and get it ready.
11:37The only bummer about all this work and hard work trying to make it all fit is that you'll never ever see it
11:43because the quarter panel sits over the top of it.
11:46What I'm finding with Alan, he's always hung around classic cars his entire life.
11:52He's always watched Shane and he's always asked questions and he's always sat in the midst of conversation
11:59and absorbed everything and he's taken that along with him to trade school.
12:04He's learnt that and he's learnt it from his dad and Shane's very very fussy and what I'm finding here as well
12:11is that Alan now has that same standard.
12:14It's perfect and if it's not perfect he will do it again.
12:20The rust repair panels that we get in aren't always perfect because the presses that we use to make these panels are no longer available.
12:29So that means Alan has to reshape them. Initially he was a bit surprised because everybody thinks
12:35oh rust repair panels they'll be perfect and he has learnt a lot.
12:39The confidence he has gained from doing this day in, day out, learning the new skills, being on the welder, handling the power tools, painting.
12:51We find that we can now leave him and not have to be hovering over his shoulder anymore and he can just take point and he knows what he's doing.
13:03So I've cut out to shape the panel and I've zinc weld through primed it.
13:10Now I'm ready to fit it and weld it in, tack it up, weld it in and spot weld it.
13:15So here's how it looks in the piece.
13:18So there were two cars sitting in a paddock in the middle of Victoria looking really sad and both of those cars were resurrected from the weeds and are now being built back to their original glory.
13:35If this isn't the ultimate recycling of automobiles, I don't know what it is.
13:42Not only that, it is giving joy to the client who is building it because often it's in the process of building the car that they get enjoyment.
13:53And it is also teaching skills and giving drive and a direction to a younger generation on what they want to do and teaching them a skill to carry forward.
14:07And a skill that unfortunately at the moment is far and few between and there seems to be a whole generation that's lacking it.
14:15It's not bulletproof.
14:23Next up, Dave Styling hosts the Brisbane Porsche Club at Styling Automotive.
14:35Jansis Equipment is a distributor for global leading brands such as Benpac, Sturtle Coney, Byers Bath.
14:41So we spy hoist lifting equipment, specialised testing equipment throughout Australia in all segments.
14:47Whether it's a car dealership right the way through to a car enthusiast or a truck dealership right the way through to truck enthusiast.
14:54The difference we see with the Benpac hoist is not just with the ergonomical technology that we use when we're operating the hoist and lifting the hoist.
15:01It's all about safety and longevity.
15:04We can put anyone under the hoist and we know they're safe.
15:07With a Benpac hoist there's no complicated buttons to use.
15:11When we want the hoist to go up we press the button.
15:13In return then when we want to lower the hoist down it's just a matter of lifting the handle and that releases the safety locks.
15:19We just press the button and it steadily brings that car down.
15:22In our Benpac range we have the two-poist hoist which is very very popular but we do the four-poist hoist.
15:30And that's anything from a car to a truck in the four-poist range.
15:33So the versatility for whatever you use in any type of application in a workshop we've got the hoist there to accommodate that.
15:40We've got a Porsche Club meeting tonight where the club members get to come to the shop and have their general meeting once a month on a Tuesday.
15:54So we've offered for the members to come here and have it tonight.
16:10Just got the cars on display in this bottom shed and also up in the panel shop.
16:15So looking forward to having them all here and getting them to have a look around and just generally be a part of it.
16:28Porsche Club of Queensland has actually been running since 1974.
16:31This year is actually our 50th anniversary.
16:33So we do have a couple of extra special things that we're doing as part of that.
16:38We replicated our first club night at the Porsche Centre in Brisbane and decked it out with 1974-era cars.
16:43Next month we've got our drive which is going to fall on the same day as the first drive back in 1974.
16:49So that's another event that's happening and then we've got a gala dinner and a few other bits and pieces.
16:53So yes, a fair bit happening this year.
16:55I've been in the club since my early 30s.
16:58So I've been in the club for about 25 years now, so a reasonable amount of time.
17:02Off and on I get fairly involved in the motorsport side of things, get involved in the concourse.
17:07I guess I've just met a lot of people with common interests.
17:10And I think one of the things if you don't have a Porsche, you're still welcome in the club.
17:14Certainly if you want to buy one, there's no better place to learn the pros and the cons.
17:19They're not a perfect car.
17:20The club is split up into a couple of facets, which is a social with what you're seeing here tonight at Styling.
17:29And then we also have the motorsport side of it and that's what I look after.
17:33So there's sprinting, there's racing and the odd hill climb and motocana, anything that involves a bit of motorsport.
17:41So yeah, I look after that.
17:48It's a great bunch of people.
17:49We have a lot of fun.
17:50Lifetime friendships get forged out there.
17:53You've got a commonality, you know.
17:55It's cars and speed.
17:56It's a tremendous combination.
17:58We have a lot of fun.
17:59Yeah, they're really, really good times, absolutely.
18:01I have a 1989 944 S2.
18:12Had it about five years, done a bunch of track days in it, use it as a daily driver.
18:17Yeah, I love it.
18:18So it's my first Porsche.
18:20Porsche Club's really good.
18:21I've joined about nine months ago.
18:24It just happened on the Porsche Concourse event down at Southbank in late 2023 and one of the people there convinced me to join.
18:33And it's been really nice just going to all the monthly club meets, get some pizza and meet some other people and weekend drives.
18:40It's really good.
18:41At the moment I'm involved in Porsche Club celebrating its 50th anniversary.
18:57It's good to come to a place where there's not just Porsches on display.
19:01You know, there's beautiful cars in there and on the rack over there, amazing to see the first generation Toyota Celica,
19:09which probably 30 years ago, 40 years ago would have been not a desirable car.
19:17It's just the way things turn around and what no one wanted then becomes desirable.
19:23The Lamborghini when we were here last time was in bits.
19:27It's now assembled and looking like a million dollars.
19:32Yeah, even though with a Porsche Club, I think if you're a true car enthusiast,
19:36you appreciate other makes and models.
19:40The Ford Bronco over in the back corner, last time we were here there was a Mini Cooper S that had just been restored.
19:48The next event I'm involved in is the big weekend at QR on the 14th and 15th of September.
20:06The club concourse will be there and also two days of motorsport, allowing our members to get on track to do sprints, regularity, parade laps.
20:18Hoping to get a collection of rare and exotic Porsches from the members who have those,
20:25which will be probably the biggest event celebration of this year.
20:30You meet so many friends with so many interests and one of the things that I get more pleasure out of is working on my own car and building a road car up to a track car.
20:46You can draw on the help and information from other club members in doing something like that.
20:53But yeah, I've been doing the motorsport since about 1999, I think I first started.
20:59And yeah, still keen, still active in it.
21:02Up next, we catch up with the boys from Bespoke Coachworks.
21:23We check out the progress on the GMC.
21:26Hi, I'm Colin. If you're looking for tyres, mechanical service or just general advice, come on down to Mooney Ponds Tyres.
21:38We offer a full range of servicing from tyres to brakes to all sorts of general mechanical repairs.
21:43Every vehicle will get an inspection to make sure the vehicle is safe.
21:47In terms of tyres, we do a large range of tyres from the smallest lawnmower tyre right the way up to the largest earthmover tyre.
21:53We do wheel alarmments, we do batteries.
21:56Any time you need any tyres, just come and see us.
22:04Invisible Carbras are a paint protection film.
22:07It's 0.2mm thick polyurethane with an adhesive on the back.
22:12We computer cut it to suit each vehicle and then apply it.
22:15I just finished repainting my 1968 Corvette.
22:18I spent a lot of money on it and cried when I got a first chip in it.
22:22So I decided I need some sort of protection.
22:24We have patents for most modern cars.
22:27Anything we don't have a patent for, we can create a set like we did for the VG.
22:31Re-sprays can cost somewhere between $10,000 and $100,000.
22:35Putting paint protection film on the paint to stop any chips is a very cost effective way of protecting the car.
22:41You can find Invisible Carbras on the web, invisiblecarbras.com.au or give us a call on 03828881041.
22:50Yeah, so the GMT's come a long way now.
23:07The cab and front end is essentially complete minus the grille fabrication.
23:12We've made a handmade bonnet, all one piece.
23:15We've integrated the hinge system seamlessly into the body line.
23:19All the inner guards have all been made and all the gapping of the guards and repairs had to be happening to the guards.
23:25And basically the front half of the car, like cab forward, is essentially finished.
23:30So we've just got all the pieces of the puzzle on the inside now as well.
23:34Just making sure we knew where everything has been mounted.
23:37All the MSD, everything with the dash and underneath there has all been mounted into place.
23:42We've got seats in place so when we put the doors in we can figure out thicknesses of door cards and all those sort of things.
23:47The seats in it are just one that the customer has chosen.
23:50They'll just get re-trimmed, maybe the foam sort of carved down and redone on certain sides.
23:54But yeah, it's just a generic sort of custom seat.
24:00Because the car's been roof-chopped, we've got a couple options to do with the windscreen.
24:03We don't know exactly what we're going to do yet.
24:05There's a couple of different options that we can do.
24:07We can do a two-piece with like a trim down the centre or we can come up with some creative options.
24:11Sort of do a one-piece, maybe a little bit of a curve with just pinches at the top and bottom.
24:16Because of the way that this window is, it's got like a real sort of V shape, it can be quite difficult to do a one-piece glass.
24:22So the pinch at the top and the bottom can then essentially make like a fisheye lens, which we can have some issues with legalities.
24:27So yeah, just a couple of different options we're going to have to look at and explore to get the best decision.
24:35We started off with a two-piece piano-style hinge on this car and we wanted to do a one-piece.
24:39So we didn't really want to go down the route of trying to open the bonnet from the rear or flip it forward from the front.
24:45So we went with like a bit of a universal hinging system where you can flip it from both sides.
24:50Kind of cool mechanism, we're able to remove the bonnet if the owner wanted to work on the car.
24:55It gives you a lot of access, which is good to be able to just take the bonnet off completely and then put it back on.
25:00Also too, serviceability, if you're in a tight garage, maybe you can just open up one side or the other side.
25:05Yeah, just a couple of different cool features with the double-sided opening.
25:14With the one-piece bonnet, we didn't want to change the way the car looks too much.
25:18Obviously, there would have been a chrome trim on the end of the hinge at one point.
25:22So we removed that and we just sort of gave a light peak to the very front of the bonnet and just tapered it out into the smooth shape as we went back over.
25:29It sort of emulates what happens on the roof as well.
25:32And then on the inside, we've just got a whole bunch of new inner structure and things like that that we've had to build into the bonnet.
25:38We've got a couple of options with the grill.
25:43So we're still going to fabricate the top half just because the way that we changed the bonnet and hinging system,
25:48we've had to refabricate the top half of the grill, which is usually a chrome piece.
25:52So we'll make the front of that, make it all gap nice to the bonnet.
25:56And then the actual insert itself, we're still tossing up if we find a new original or a very good condition original,
26:03because the one that we have has been worked on, or we will go down the line of just getting a scan of the area
26:09and then making a custom billet piece.
26:16Tom and Wallace have been taking over everything that's been going on with the GMC lately.
26:20Tom's been doing a lot of the mechanical type things and he'll tackle all the inner structure and things like that for the tub,
26:25the four link, et cetera, like that.
26:27And then Wallace has been doing the more intricate details when it comes to the sheet metal fabrication up front.
26:32So while Wallace has been working on the front guards and the bonnet, as well as the interior,
26:39I've been working on designing the tray structure and the bed mounts.
26:42At the moment the design's about 95% complete.
26:45I need to make a few small changes since we've got our sample done,
26:49and then we'll send it off to the laser cutter next week.
26:51The tub that was originally on there was more of a 32 Ford style tub and it didn't really match the car at all.
27:05So we're building a full new custom tub for the customer.
27:08The aesthetic for the car is going to be similar to an earlier model of the GMC,
27:13which would have been a full unibody style car or truck, where the tub was one piece with the cab.
27:20This won't be, it'll be a separate tub and cab.
27:22The next stages for the build are, we're going to start building all the inner structure for the tub,
27:33get all that mounted, and then we will have to go back.
27:36And once we've got all the weight, we're going to go back and redo the four link
27:39and some of the chassis components that were not correctly done in the past.
27:51Coming up, we head to Brisbane Motor Museum, where Ron Goodman's 356 is on display.

29:03We've been pretty honoured we've been able to send the 54 up to the Brisbane Motor Museum to have on display.
29:13We're going to lose it for a few months, but hey, what an opportunity to have the car on display up there.
29:18It's pretty humbling that it's also part of the cars on movies display, so as you know the 54 had its own movie, so it's getting some accolades now for it.
29:28Yeah, the movie, The Road to Monterey, that was on Qantas flights to and from America and overseas.
29:34It also won the German Auto Film Festival.
29:36The guy that done all the filming for it, Rob Sheeran, absolutely amazing.
29:40He's not only a good cinematographer, he's absolutely fantastic at everything he does, and he loves Porsches, that's the best part.
29:46He's as passionate of the Porsches as we are.
29:48You've probably seen a lot of his work on Rides Down Under, a lot of the stuff from The Road to Monterey,
29:52and a lot of the stuff from The Road to Monterey.
29:54The guys have used Michel as well.
30:12The Brisbane Muddy Museum is a brand new museum we opened back in June last year.
30:38So we do three monthly exhibits at the minimum, changing up our themes all the time.
30:42So at the moment we've got seen on the screen, which is TV and movie cars.
30:45Seen on the screen, we tried to pick a title that would really fit with the sort of genre and the sort of vehicles we were going to get.
30:50As you can probably tell from the name, it's movie and TV vehicles, so cars and bikes.
30:54Some have actually been in production, some are just iconic for being the vehicle from a show or a movie, such as a DeLorean.
31:01And then some are replicas of the iconic, unique vehicles that you would have got around.
31:05So we've got a couple of vehicles, for example, that have been in some recent productions.
31:08We've got three or four cars that we've had from Boy Swallows Universe.
31:11We've got an Eldorado from Elvis that Austin Butler sat in.
31:15We've got Jason Momoa's dad's Chevy Silver Rider that was in the first Aquaman they filled on the Gold Coast.
31:20And a few other ones like that.
31:21So we've got some cool, unique replicas of the Munsters' Dragula, which is a coffin on wheels, which is meant to be a drag car.
31:27Personally, Eleanor, the replica of Eleanor, just gets me.
31:30You know, watching Nicolas Cage when I was a kid, drive that and steal that and gone 60 seconds.
31:34That was the car for me growing up.
31:36We've had the museum open for about nine months, so we opened it in June last year.
31:47We bought the property in April 2021.
31:49We spent a year in council getting approval to open a museum, which we had to do in an industrial area.
31:54So they obviously had to be keen on putting it in, which they were.
31:56They were very supportive, which is great.
31:57We broke ground on the construction itself in February 2022 and then we got to open in June 2023.
32:07At the end of our last exhibit, we'd done eight exhibits and we sold over 12,000 tickets.
32:11Very happy with the response we've seen from the general public.
32:14At the end of the day, what we wanted to be was a motoring hub.
32:16A lot of people have places where they meet, cars and coffee, clubs going to people's collections or venues and that sort of stuff.
32:23And so what we wanted to be as a venue to the greater car community was just a hub where they could meet.
32:29And that's really been the greatest thing about this.
32:31We get clubs visiting us with, you know, from minis to Ferraris to Renaults to anything in between.
32:37And so that's the real great impact we've had from this is to meet all these people and to give them a home.
32:44The capacity of the displays is about, we could go up to around 60 vehicles or 120 minis, as we like to joke.
32:50But we try and aim for a really refined display of around 50 to 40 vehicles because we want to show profiles and angles and different positions.
32:57And we want to put in memorabilia and signs and models and all sorts of trophies and stuff like that that some of our exhibitors have on display.
33:04So we've got on the display at the moment Ron Gooden's 1953 Porsche 356 that featured in The Road to Monterey, which he released recently, which is pretty good production.
33:17And he's been kind enough to allow us to put it on display for some of the viewers that have come through.
33:20What we think about his car is it's immaculate.
33:22We had in our last German display a few 356s, which are gorgeous again.
33:26And obviously the model of Porsche that they are, it's sort of an iconic sort of thing when you're growing up and you're seeing that sort of car.
33:31But Ron's gone on next level with this and sort of the engineering they've done to be able to race at the calibre of things that they've raced it in is quite extraordinary.
33:38That sort of support from someone of Ron's calibre is amazing for us.
33:42As a brand new museum, we're trying to lead the pack up here in Queensland.
33:45It's pretty phenomenal to try and get that sort of stuff come out of the woodwork.
33:48It's great when we get to meet people who have such amazing collections for them to put on display.
33:52But to have someone of Ron's calibre reach out to us was phenomenal.
34:10So we've got 100 kilowatts of solar on the roof.
34:12We're fully air conditioned in three separate pressurised areas.
34:15We do that so that the vehicles are climate controlled, but also so that customers are happy when they're coming through here.
34:20It is Queensland, so it is a bit warm.
34:22We've got a car elevator, which has been done by world class installers.
34:25So it's rated up to three and a half tonne and vehicles at six and a half metres long, so that we can get some big cars and big vehicles in, I should say.
34:31The floor upstairs is a post-tension slab, so think Golden Gate Bridge, so that we could support all the amazing vehicles we get to put on display.
34:38And overall it's a world class venue that we wanted to build something that was worthy of being Brisbane's only motor museum.
34:44So we had to build to that standard.
34:46Next up, Mark and I hit the road in the 1,000 horsepower HSV GDS.
34:57Addix Detailing is your one-stop shop for everything detail and custom work for your vehicle.
35:15Across our multiple shops, we take in every kind of vehicle.
35:19So we take in a lot of exotic cars, a lot of four-wheel drives, normal, everyday cars, and we even do caravans.
35:27So we have two main locations for Addix Detailing.
35:30One, our HQ is in Tullamarine, and we have another shop in Cheltenham.
35:34And then, next door at the HQ, we have Addix Vanguard, which is caravan's only.
35:40As soon as a car comes through our doors, we get in and give it a full, deep clean inside and out.
35:47Then we get it out into the wash bay, we do a paint decontamination, then we start the paint correction process.
35:52So we polish all exterior panels, including the glass, and we get out every single swirl, watermark, scratch, and all the hazing.
35:59We get it brand new.
36:00And then we apply three coats of ceramic coating to all the paintwork, the windows, and even your wheels.
36:05So the best way to contact us is via social media.
36:09We have a lot of content that goes out every single week, or our website.
36:12You can jump on there, enquire now, just put in all your details, and then we'll give you a call, and we can book your car in.
36:18We don't.
36:32This here is our mate Golly.
36:35Yep, good old Golly.
36:37Now, we've known this car, we've seen this car since it was brand new off the show.
36:42And spankin' you.
36:43I was down there when Golly and his wonderful wife ordered the thing from the dealership.
36:51I sat in the room with them while they ordered it.
36:54And then ticked all the boxes on the mods they wanted us to do from brand new.
37:00Which was including the supercharger, the original supercharger kit we did.
37:04Yep.
37:05Exhaust system, air intake, camshaft, I think we lowered it as well.
37:09Yeah, we did all that.
37:11Yeah, we did all of that.
37:12From brand new.
37:13Pre-delivery.
37:14It's a 2010 model car, so.
37:16Yeah.
37:172010, we used to bang these out all the time.
37:19Not this spec.
37:20This was a pretty good spec car.
37:22Like, they ticked every box back then.
37:24You know, not just being an E3 GDS, but all the stuff that we could provide for them.
37:30So it was awesome.
37:31It was.
37:32And it was making like, what was it?
37:33400 kilowatts?
37:34Yeah.
37:35Something like that.
37:36It was over 400 kilowatts.
37:37420 maybe?
37:38Yeah, yeah.
37:39It was about the end of the little 2300 Harrop kit.
37:41Because, you know, there was some limitations with the Harrop manifolding and intercooling
37:45and stuff like that.
37:47So.
37:48But it's still quite a good, 420 kilowatts.
37:50Freaking healthy.
37:51No, it was the king of the, it was the king of the kits back in the day.
37:54It really was.
37:55There's a massive story that goes along with this car, why we're doing it, why we're building
38:00it.
38:01Because this car is dedicated to Tish.
38:03Yeah.
38:04Dolly's late wife.
38:05Yeah.
38:06So he's built this in memory or for the memory of Tish.
38:09Yeah.
38:10And he said he wanted the next level combination.
38:13Something that he had muttered about, you know, over the last 15 years.
38:17He was happy with it for a long time.
38:18Yeah.
38:19But he said whenever he got the chance to give it a freshen up, he was gonna make a thousand
38:23horsepower.
38:24You're right.
38:25A hundred percent.
38:26That's exactly right.
38:27You're right.
38:28Yes.
38:29That opportunity came up.
38:30We ripped the LS out of it, that smaller blower, the whole engine out.
38:34And what did you build?
38:35So this is LS Next, cast iron LS Next block.
38:39It's got 11 degree mast.
38:41They're big cylinder heads on it, you know, with a much bigger valve to suit the much bigger
38:47engine combo.
38:48So this is 4185, 4125, which gives it 454 cubes.
38:54So an LS 454 with a 2650 Magnuson.
39:00There's lots of really cool parts inside this engine.
39:03The whole car's been rebuilt.
39:06The whole car.
39:07So it's got Shockworks suspension with their billet caps and all their really trick components.
39:13It's the best of the best as far as Shockworks suspension goes.
39:17And I've got to say the thing, for how low it is, it rides so well.
39:22The gearbox got built, and we put a TrueTrack in it as well.
39:25It's a brand new gearbox, not a built gearbox.
39:27Oh, sorry.
39:28Brand new.
39:29So it's a Tremec T56 Magnum, which is good for 900 foot-pounds of torque.
39:36And we're right on that number at the moment.
39:38And it's got the direct shift in it, so it's not the remote shift like a VE would normally
39:42have.
39:43It's a direct shift, and that shifter is just unbelievable.
39:46Well, it sounds pretty tight every time you shift as well.
39:49Well, yeah.
39:50It's half the travel distance, and it's very direct.
39:52It's really, really, really nice.
39:54On the engine dyno, how much did this one produce?
39:57Engine dyno-wise, 1,080 flywheel horsepower.
40:03So we hit that 1,000 horsepower mark in this chase.
40:06Yeah.
40:07We got pretty good ring seal and all that, but I think it's going to make a little bit
40:10more, once it's got a few k's on it, it might end up at 1,100 flywheel horsepower.
40:15Yep.
40:16There's not a lot wrong with that.
40:18I mean, that's...
40:19That's very healthy.
40:20Yeah, it's a good number for the combination that it is, you know?
40:24Yeah, absolutely.
40:25I mean, Andrew's cylinder heads, these flow just on 400 CFM.
40:30Yep.
40:31And to get an LS head flowing at 400 CFM, it's no mean feat.
40:36It's not like you just go and buy some and they're already flowing that.
40:39I think the mast heads flowed 365 or 367 out of the box, and Andrew did some work on those,
40:47and they're flowing 400 CFM at 750,000 valve lift.
40:52So just to break that down, what would a stock set of LS heads flow?
40:57If you think LS3 style heads, which is what they are, even though they're 11 degree, they're
41:02still LS3, they're about 330, I think, out of the box.
41:07Yeah, okay.
41:08That's a fairly significant increase.
41:10Yeah, it is.
41:11It is.
41:12And you can feel it.
41:13I mean, it's got some boost, it's got it all going.
41:16It's got our custom exhaust, our big two-inch primary pipes.
41:19It's got all the stuff on it.
41:21Like, it's a gorilla.
41:23There's no doubt about that.
41:25That's an understatement.
41:26This thing is a weapon.
41:27It's got every possible part that you can think of adding.
41:32Yeah, so I described it to golly at one point there.
41:36We've kept the radiator cap and shoved a new driveline underneath it.
41:40I don't even think we've kept the radiator cap.
41:43It's got a new radiator, a new fan, a new cap, a new everything.
41:46I reckon the only thing that we've kept is the shell.
41:50Nah, we kept the wheel nuts.
41:58Overall, I mean...
41:59Oh, look, it's just sensational.
42:01I mean, you know, Golly's going to be so impressed by it.
42:04Yeah, hopefully Golly can actually make it down to pick it up.
42:08Yeah, that'd be really good to catch up with him.
42:10Yeah, it'd be good to get him this car back and see the smile on his face.
42:15And hopefully we've done, um...
42:17Hopefully we've done, you know, Tish some justice with what we've built for him.
42:21Yeah, and we also got, you know, the name plate made up as well.
42:25So it's the same size and everything as the HSV one, you know, dedicated to Tish,
42:29which is now mounted in the engine bay.
42:31Yeah.
42:32So...
42:33Yeah.
42:34It's those little things.
42:36Next week on Rides Down Under Workshop Wars,
42:42Ryan Goodman's working on yet another 356.
42:45Aidan from Bespoke Coachworks gives us a real-world demonstration
42:49on the equipment from here in Forbes Machinery House.
42:52The guys from Valleygrunt test-drive the refurbished 318 Safari Wagon.
42:58Mark is back in the engine dyno, testing their latest engine build for the LX Tirana.
43:03And the boys from Sue Performance are busy with a shop full of cars and a handful of new bump.
43:10All that and more on Rides Down Under Workshop Wars.
