00:00Forrest Galante
00:30Wildlife expert and conservationist
00:34And I'm here to take you on a journey
00:39To a place you've probably never heard of
00:43Because until now
00:46It has been kept a secret
00:48It is unmatched by any other place on earth
00:55For those lucky enough to make it here
00:57It is a refuge
00:59A sanctuary
01:01A place to live their lives in safety and in peace
01:05In a world that has forgotten the importance of nature
01:12A new Eden has been born
01:15A place for animals to thrive
01:20Because this isn't a zoo
01:25This is an ark
01:29This is the world's largest animal rescue center
01:35This is the world's largest animal rescue center
01:593,500 acres and still growing
02:05The state-of-the-art facility features a wide variety of biomes
02:12From tropical forests
02:15To sub-antarctic islands
02:19This means Ventara will have the right home for any animal in need
02:25Anywhere in the world
02:28At any time
02:30One of the world's leading rhino vets
02:51Dr. Samsool Ali
02:53Is welcoming a very young resident to Ventara tonight
02:57Hello you adorable little one
03:02Look at this
03:04Here is our baby little orphan
03:06Indian greater one-horned rhino
03:08She has just had a very stressful trip
03:11She's nervous
03:12She's tired
03:13Very, very confused
03:15But soon
03:16We'll move this little orphan
03:17Into her new home
03:18To join a herd of rhino here
03:20And live out her days
03:22In happiness
03:23Instead of in a terrible conditions
03:25Hey buddy
03:31Uh oh
03:34Looks like I'm going west
03:36You'll be okay
03:41I know it's scary
03:42But you'll be alright
03:43Let's go let him out
04:13It's okay sweetie
04:23This baby Indian one-horned rhino
04:26Was just over a week old
04:28When her mother died
04:29In a nearby zoo
04:30Now
04:31Dr. Ali will make it his job
04:34To raise this orphan
04:35Into an adult
04:36Her name is Gowri
04:37Gowri means
04:39She's a
04:40Shakti goddess
04:41So this is her night cell
04:43This is the night cell
04:44It started in
04:47Last year
04:47When her mother died
04:49An acute death
04:49It was a very unfortunate
04:51To be leaving her
04:52Ten days old
04:52And
04:54When I hear that
04:55My heart also broke
04:56That the air cuff
04:57Is now lonely
04:57Now
04:59Truly I can take care of her
05:02With my own hands
05:03In one Tara
05:04It's sad
05:09But instead of looking back
05:11To a dark history
05:12We're looking forward
05:14To a very bright future
05:15Since my childhood
05:17Me and my brother
05:18Always we are very interested
05:19In wildlife
05:20He took another way
05:22But I wanted to become
05:23A wildlife veterinarian
05:24Gowri will spend
05:29The next few months
05:30In a temporary
05:30Quarantine enclosure
05:31Under Dr. Ali's
05:33Close observation
05:34Hopefully
05:35Gowri now has a shot
05:37At a new life
05:38Gowri isn't the only
05:41New arrival
05:42Spending time
05:43In quarantine
05:43Most animals
05:45That arrive at Ventara
05:46Are housed here
05:47Temporarily
05:48The enclosures
05:50Might not look pretty
05:51But they're specially designed
05:53For the animal's safety
05:54Comfort
05:55And health
05:56Today
05:57The head quarantine
05:58Veterinarian
05:59Is conducting a checkup
06:00On an animal
06:01That is recovering
06:02From an illness
06:03After being
06:04Rescued
06:04From a closed zoo
06:05Look at this guy
06:06Sloth bear
06:07Yeah
06:08Hey buddy
06:08Hi doctor
06:14How are you doing?
06:15Yes I'm doing good
06:16Look at that tongue
06:17Going in the honey jar
06:18Yes
06:18What are you feeding him for?
06:20We want to observe them
06:21On a regular basis
06:22So this particular guy
06:23He has TB
06:25TB as in tuberculosis
06:27He's literally breathing
06:29On you right now
06:30Now he's literally
06:32Almost cured of TB
06:34We've been putting him
06:35On TB medications
06:36Regularly
06:36So he's not contagious
06:38He's not contagious
06:38Oh my goodness
06:39You guys seem very calm
06:40For being around
06:41Diverculosis
06:43Generally when you look
06:44At a bear
06:45They're very active animals
06:46They like to
06:47Play around with things
06:48They like to dig around
06:49They're very restless
06:50So when you see an animal
06:52Which is a little dull
06:53Who gets tired
06:54With doing something
06:55That is when
06:56Our suspicion starts
06:57We took the animal
06:59For a CT scan
07:00And an MRI
07:01So we get to know
07:02That his lungs
07:03Were quite infected
07:04Our work starts
07:05From there
07:06So he must have come
07:08From a captive facility
07:09Right?
07:10Yeah
07:10They didn't know
07:11That he had TB
07:12Oh
07:13So he's literally
07:14Why you bring animals
07:15Into quarantine
07:16So they didn't even know
07:17That he had tuberculosis
07:18Yes
07:19And you found that out
07:21When he arrived here
07:22Yeah
07:22So how long
07:24Until he's cured
07:25To the point that
07:25He's literally
07:29Slurping the honey out
07:31These guys suck
07:31The termites out
07:32From the ground
07:33So that's what
07:33He's trying to do here
07:34That's what he's trying to do
07:35The quarantine centers
07:37Generally are very small
07:38This is main reason
07:39Because we have to
07:40Look at the animal
07:41We have to observe the animal
07:43And we need to catch
07:44If the animal is falling ill
07:46Very fast
07:46The animal also
07:48Is in a very stressful condition
07:50So to minimize
07:51The stress of these animals
07:52We need to keep them
07:54Occupied throughout the day
07:55Otherwise they get bored
07:56Which is again
07:57A form of stress
07:58He's probably got to test
08:00Negative for several months
08:01Yeah
08:02Where is he in that
08:03Journey currently?
08:04He's about
08:05Two months
08:06Two to three months now
08:07Of negative
08:08Negative
08:08So pretty soon
08:09He will actually get moved
08:10Yes
08:11And then he gets socialized
08:12That's what you do, right?
08:13Yes
08:14He just sneezed on me
08:15Well I have tuberculosis now
08:16Well let's give him
08:19A little more honey here
08:20If I give him much more
08:22He's going to get the runs
08:23I think
08:23Yeah
08:24So I'll give that to you
08:25Thank you
08:26And hey big guy
08:27I hope you get better
08:28Okay
08:29Get better
08:30You sure?
08:31Whoa
08:31Scary
08:32Woo
08:32All right
08:33Thank you doctor
08:34Thank you so much
08:35Although this sloth bear
08:39Has tested negative for TB
08:40He will remain in quarantine
08:43A little longer
08:44Just to be sure
08:45This level of caution
08:47Might seem isolating
08:48But it serves
08:49An important purpose
08:50If an animal
08:52Has an infectious disease
08:53That could cause
08:54Serious problems
08:55For other animals
08:56And even humans
08:57Fortunately at Ventara
08:59Animal enrichment
09:01Is a top priority
09:02Especially for predators
09:04Big
09:05And small
09:06Let's see what she thinks of this
09:10Get it
09:13Get it
09:14Get it
09:15Get it
09:15As its name suggests
09:17This fishing cat
09:18Spends its days
09:19Hunting for fish
09:20Oh she's not so sure
09:22But boredom can take a toll
09:24On its mental health
09:25So I've come up with a plan
09:27To keep its hunting instincts
09:29Occupied
09:29Come on
09:30Here she comes
09:32Psst
09:34Psst
09:35Psst
09:36Get it
09:39Get it
09:41Get it
09:41Get it
09:41Get it
09:42Get it
09:42Get it
09:42Get it
09:42Trying this silly little kid's toy
09:44This robo shark
09:45That I brought from home
09:46But for her
09:47It's enrichment
09:49Look at that
09:49She's killing it
09:51How cool is that
09:52Oh she literally murdered it
09:54That might be my favorite bit of cat enrichment we've ever done
10:16Super fun to be able to come here
10:18Bring these weird toys from the United States
10:20And get to enrich the lives of many of these incredible cats
10:24That most people don't even know exist
10:26You enjoy that girly
10:29Fun and games are all part of life here at Ventara
10:37But some residents
10:38Like this pair of harpy eagles
10:40Need a little recuperation
10:42Before the games begin
10:43Take a look at this
10:49In here is one of the most incredible birds of prey in the world
10:52The second largest bird of prey
10:54The harpy eagle
10:56These two are juveniles
10:58But don't be fooled
10:59Their massive size
11:01Is indicative of their destructive capabilities
11:04Which is that they can swoop down
11:06And will take a full grown sloth
11:08A giant howler monkey
11:09Anything right out of the trees
11:11But what's crazy about these two
11:13Is their back story
11:14And the Ventara team heard about this story
11:17Of two baby harpies
11:19That had been breaking into a chicken coop
11:22And killing a woman's chickens
11:23What did she do?
11:24She took a shotgun
11:25Blasted them both
11:26But because they're such big substantial birds
11:29It didn't kill either one of them
11:30So Ajon and his team over here
11:33They scooped them up
11:34And they brought them back here
11:36But in order to see
11:37If all the extraction
11:38Of the lead
11:39And all the damage
11:41That they sustained is working
11:42What we have to do
11:43Is get a weight on these guys
11:44Set the scale up right here
11:47It's down to zero
11:49What weight are we hoping
11:50They've gained, Ajon?
11:56What were they
11:56When they first came here
11:58To Ventara?
12:00Okay, so there were three and a half-ish kilos
12:02When they got here
12:03And we're hoping
12:04That they've come up to five kilos
12:06How big will they be at adulthood?
12:07If everything goes well
12:09Maybe around 9.5 kilos
12:119.5 kilos
12:12That's a 20 plus pound bird
12:14With a giant wingspan
12:15And these incredible talons
12:16Let's see if we can get them
12:20On the scale, okay?
12:24So we're just going to back out
12:26Now that we've set up the scale
12:27We've put a little rabbit on them
12:28And we're going to hope
12:29That they come down
12:30And give us their weight
12:31And I'm actually going to use
12:32My cameraman, James, over here
12:34You're going to need to zoom in
12:35With your lens
12:36And tell us what that weight is, okay?
12:38There we go
12:38Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:44Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:45Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:49Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:55Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:57Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
12:59Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:00Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:00Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:02Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:03Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:04Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:05Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:06Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:07Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:08Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:09Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:10Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:11Oh, my goodness, he's on the perch
13:12Oh, perfect. He's on the perch.
13:15Very cute. What's the weight?
13:175.5 kilos.
13:205.5 kilos. So that means everything is working,
13:23the treatment is kicking in, he's gaining weight,
13:26and now he's going to double in size
13:28to become one of the most magnificent birds of prey in the world.
13:31So we'll let him just enjoy his meal.
13:33Ajahn will go get his scale.
13:35All things are looking good.
13:42Anad Ambani started Ventara in 2019
13:58after a lifetime passion for animals.
14:01In his words,
14:03the longer it takes us to build an enclosure,
14:06the longer an animal is suffering.
14:12But even today, construction continues within the preserve.
14:16And the staff at Ventara have come upon one of their biggest challenges yet,
14:21building a habitat in the sweltering Indian climate for penguins.
14:27Raj, it's over 100 degrees out and you have penguins coming.
14:30How are you using all these chillers to keep the water cold?
14:33This is the challenge we face on all the cold water species here.
14:37Sure.
14:38The temperature here in this part of the world is, you know, always hot.
14:41Then it's going to be much hotter.
14:42So we're all prepared.
14:43We have chillers to continuously chill the water to about 12 degrees Celsius.
14:47Oh, that's cold.
14:48So here, what we do is we keep something in standby.
14:51Yeah.
14:52So we have two chillers.
14:53To share the load.
14:54Yeah, to share the load.
14:55And also, if at any point in time,
14:57there is a problem with one chiller and it needs to get serviced,
15:00we have a backup and a standby.
15:02They said we have to get this ready in a week's time.
15:05It is a very short time, but yes, when you have the right team
15:08and the right people with the right mindset, okay,
15:12things are achievable, not a problem.
15:14What is that mindset?
15:15The mindset is put the animals first, then you.
15:20Very simple.
15:21So you have redundancy upon redundancy upon redundancy upon redundancy.
15:24That's right.
15:25We don't want to take a chance here at all.
15:27No way.
15:28And that's what we, you know, try to do here for the penguins.
15:31Now it is a peak summer.
15:33And in India, summers are a bit higher.
15:37They're used to the Pacific's cold currents.
15:40And it is very important to give them the similar kind of environment
15:44so that the animal gets the utmost care.
15:47When it gets too hot here, they just take a walk inside to this room.
15:51We have an Arctic chiller room here.
15:54So in the mid-afternoons, it could reach up to 40, 45 degrees Celsius.
15:59Okay.
16:00And that is very hot for the penguins.
16:02So we have air-conditioned, you know, in the room.
16:05It's Antarctica in here.
16:06It's cold.
16:07It's white.
16:08It's bleak.
16:09Just like penguins like.
16:10They can come here.
16:11They can chill.
16:12And then when the temperature again goes down,
16:14they take a walk and they go back to swell.
16:16They can chill.
16:17Rehabilitation is a long procedure.
16:22It doesn't happen like that.
16:25I don't know exactly the future, what is going to happen.
16:29I'm sure they have a bright future.
16:40While Mr. Raju and his team wait for the penguins to arrive,
16:44I'm paying a visit to some old friends.
16:49A mother elephant and her calf that were recently rescued
16:52from an abusive logging operation.
16:56Now that they're safe,
16:57the next step of their rehabilitation begins.
17:00Mental stimulation.
17:02So I brought some enrichment toys for both of them.
17:05I know, you're cheeky, I know.
17:18Whoa!
17:19So cheeky.
17:21This is life now.
17:22Nobody's going to hurt you here.
17:26So these guys are very excited for these ball treats.
17:30See if you can get it.
17:35There's fruit in there.
17:40So we unloaded Maya here with her mother.
17:43And when she came here, she was violent.
17:45She was so panicky, life was tough.
17:48It's nice to see how her temperament has settled down.
17:51Now that Maya isn't being abused, she's starting to relax.
17:54And so we've given her a toy.
17:56So we brought her some balls, stuffed them with fruit.
17:59I still don't trust her, which is why I need to move back.
18:02No, no, no, no.
18:05Go on, have a dig at it.
18:08Oh, you're not going to fit in there.
18:12Oh, no.
18:13Mom's totally crushed that one.
18:14Look at that.
18:16Oops.
18:21Uh-oh.
18:22Oh, no, Mom, no.
18:23There's a GoPro in there.
18:26Oh, no, no.
18:27No, no.
18:32Yeah, I'm afraid that doesn't bode well for our camera.
18:38OK, I think that's the end of that enrichment.
18:40Let's try something else.
18:42Come on.
18:44Look, the pool's here.
18:47Look.
18:48Come on.
18:49Look at all this fruit.
18:50You can go for a nice swim.
18:52Come.
18:53Come on.
18:55Look, here comes Mama.
18:56Look.
18:57I know.
18:59Good girl.
19:00Look, right there.
19:01Good.
19:02There, right there.
19:03Don't get angry at me.
19:04There's a girl.
19:08Look how fun this is.
19:10Can have a swim in the pool.
19:12Now she gets toys, balls.
19:14She has a swimming pool to learn how to swim.
19:16And she's definitely going to take my shoes.
19:19Hi.
19:20Uh-oh.
19:21My shoes.
19:22Whoop.
19:24Had she not come here, she'd never get access to a pool like this.
19:28She'd never get access to toys.
19:30She would just be chained up, tied up, put into the logging industry or the circus industry.
19:35And now she's just learning how to do the things that an elephant should be doing.
19:52To deal with so many species of animals, Ventara has brought in experts from all over the world to keep the animals healthy and to enrich their lives.
20:05Here's the forest.
20:06Oh, God.
20:07Here we have a young Papuan Taipan.
20:08Dr. Ajay Kartik has spent his life working with reptiles, particularly venomous snakes.
20:22It's extremely rare and extremely, extremely dangerous.
20:25They kill dozens of people in Papua New Guinea every year.
20:28They're very quick to strike, very aggressive.
20:30We have to assist feed this animal.
20:32We have a few of these PNG Taipans, but this particular individual is not a great feeder.
20:45So in order to make sure he's got the best shot of survival, we oftentimes have to assist feed this animal.
20:51I'll do the pinning, but I would be grateful if you could help me.
20:55Certainly.
20:56So it's an exercise we do with the utmost caution always.
20:59Certainly.
21:00Papuan Taipan is one of the most dangerous snake species in the world.
21:04It's found in Papua New Guinea and it's responsible for the most snakebite deaths every year in that country.
21:09The way we see it, it's not really risking our own life for the animal.
21:14It's just, it's a species that could use our help and we have the skills to be able to help it, then why not?
21:19We're happy to do this for any animal that needs it.
21:22So I'll try and see if I can get a quick hold on the back of our friend's head here.
21:30A snake typically wouldn't eat normally for one of several reasons.
21:34One could be just the stress of transit or maybe the snake's not in the appropriate environmental conditions.
21:42And finally, of course, it might be an indication of some larger illness that the animal has.
21:47Just gonna take our little pinky here.
21:50Wow, I see why you have to force feed them.
21:54I mean, this is crazy.
21:55Yeah, sometimes they're just extremely stubborn.
21:57Yeah, like that.
21:59Right from the front and then pinch it on both sides.
22:02Yep.
22:03Further down?
22:04Further down.
22:05Look at that.
22:06Split them out, pull them out a little bit.
22:09And yes, gently down the sides again and push it in.
22:13There we go.
22:14Further.
22:18Should I put my finger in there or no?
22:20Depends on how bored of life you are.
22:22Yeah.
22:23So another thing we generally do is squeeze it down the throat just so it gets to a point where the snake can't regurgitate anymore.
22:29You do the massaging, right, to bring it all the way down.
22:31Yes.
22:32Yes.
22:33And even though it's a dangerous snake, this exercise is something that's absolutely essential to keep the snake, you know, healthy and happy.
22:40From when I was a child, I was weirdly obsessed with reptiles.
22:44Always had a soft spot for snakes and lizards and crocodiles because, you know, most people didn't like them.
22:50But, you know, it's a childhood thing. I've always loved reptiles, always will.
22:54So over time after this is done, about a few times, we're quite sure that this chap will start feeding on us.
22:59Any idea where this one came from?
23:01I believe this one was seized from a private collection.
23:04In India?
23:05No, from overseas.
23:06Overseas. Wow. Crazy.
23:08Beautiful snake. Can I touch him?
23:09Yes.
23:10Never touched a Papuan Taipan before.
23:11Wow, look at the coloration.
23:13Woo!
23:14It's very beautiful.
23:15Deadly, but very, very beautiful.
23:20It's always humbling to be inches away from one of the deadliest snakes on the planet.
23:27But sometimes, it's nice to visit an animal that's more frolic than fangs.
23:32Today at Ventara, we're going to be trying something really interesting.
23:35We're taking a look at these beautiful, rescued South American tapirs that came all the way from Venezuela.
23:42But these guys are young and they love to play.
23:44And at dusk, they like to head out into their paddock and have a swim and have a romp around.
23:49So today, I'm going to try and get a dog harness on one of these juvenile tapirs and then let them out and see if we can get a really unique look and perspective at giant tapir play.
24:01Hi, you beautiful little thing. You're so sweet.
24:08Okay, so that goes like that.
24:12Well, that was easier than expected.
24:15You really like my beard.
24:17This is a very funny thing.
24:21There we go. Look at that.
24:22These guys are closely related to rhinos.
24:26They're basically South America's version of a rhinoceros, which is crazy because if you think about eating a rhino, it seems like an absolutely insane proposition.
24:35But they're heavily hunted for meat markets.
24:38And this is a whole herd of just beautiful, friendly babies that I adore.
24:42All right, you ready to go have some fun?
24:46I love you. Yes, I do.
24:49Come on, guys. Come on. Come on. Come on.
24:54There she goes.
24:56Whoops.
24:57Go play.
24:59Go play. Go play. Go on.
25:03Look at them all.
25:05They're so much fun.
25:06You want to go in the water with your friends?
25:21Awesome.
25:28Yes.
25:29Yes.
25:30That's all I wanted.
25:31This is so cool.
25:48So I believe that our tapir vision cameras were a success.
25:51I think this is the first time in history anybody has ever put a dog harness on a juvenile tapir.
25:57Look, that's what was on your back.
25:59Isn't that funny? Look, we'll get a selfie.
26:01Tapir selfie.
26:04No, no, you're not done.
26:05What?
26:06You got to get those other two.
26:07I'm not getting those cameras.
26:08Oh, yeah.
26:10Look at the amount of poop in there.
26:13Tapirs tend to defecate in the water to mask their scent from predators.
26:18And while these pools are clean daily, they haven't started cleaning this one yet.
26:22All right, I'm doing it. We got to get our cameras back.
26:26Oh, this is...
26:27This is...
26:37This was not on the schedule for today.
26:40Oh, boy. These guys are laughing at me.
26:42You're laughing at me.
26:46Three, two, one.
26:51I didn't need to go all the way under.
26:52Why did I do that?
26:53All right, I think we're done for today.
27:03Come on.
27:04Big, big day here at Ventara because the penguins have finally arrived.
27:14Seven beautiful, humble penguins rescued from Dubai.
27:17Yeah, guys. Everybody's come out to see them. It's really exciting because there have never before been penguins here at Ventara.
27:32So nobody's even seen them yet except for the rescue team.
27:34And going inside, releasing these guys into their brand new forever home is going to be so awesome.
27:40Come on, little guy. Here we go.
27:44Hello. Welcome home.
27:45Come on. There he is. Woo-hoo! Look at that. Everybody's so excited.
27:50We were all excited. So excited that we're getting penguins.
28:05They were the first batch of penguins that were coming to Ventara.
28:09They were rescued from pet trade.
28:11Let's get the other ones. Okay, guys, let's bring more boxers.
28:15Oh, no, no, no.
28:17Look at that.
28:19more boxes so they have gone through things that they have never expected in
28:24their lifetimes but then when you give them the right things they need they
28:29come out of it they feel oh I'm just something different this is how I want
28:33them and we can see that in the behavior of the animals
28:36let's just back off and give them a little space
28:39yeah hey there he goes all right go find your buddy that'll work right there
28:52there you go come on out there you go
29:02rehabilitation of any animal rescue and rehabilitation is some milestone you know
29:07I achieved when you get a distressed animal under your car and then they're
29:12doing well each day is you know their progress gives you so much happiness
29:26so here we go the very last of seven humble penguins heading out into his new
29:32home come on buddy come on it's okay
29:37and look at that there he goes heading off to join his friends potentially the first time in his life
29:45getting to see proper chilled salt water in a proper enclosure where they can be happy and let's see
29:52yep typical penguins straight into feeding happy as can be and what an amazing story it is to see these guys go through what they've been through and come here and have this entire thing built for them in under a week and now just like that they're playing
30:11they're feeding and they are happy
30:14see you guys
30:15it is natural for humans to keep pets after all we have evolved alongside and domesticated several
30:36several species the rise in social media however has started to change our relationship wild undomesticated animals are often used as status symbols and that can cause problems
30:43wild undomesticated animals are often used as status symbols and that can cause problems
30:49oh I've got a head right by my hand I hope he doesn't bite me through the bag
30:53I'm not a
30:54I'm not a
30:55ah
30:56ah
30:57five two three
30:58good
30:59let's see what we've got here
31:02is that big?
31:04oh it's pretty big
31:05the way that I can see that's a big one
31:07that's a big snake
31:08watch your hands I don't know where his head is
31:10yeah I don't know about their temperament
31:11let's see
31:12okay
31:14so this is a big beautiful mark
31:16oh wow what a color
31:18did you know it was an albino?
31:19no
31:20oh wow that's a big one
31:24watch his head there
31:25just pull pull pull
31:26that's a big snake
31:27that's a big boy
31:28oh
31:29beautiful
31:30oh wow
31:31why is it a problem to keep a wild animal as a pet?
31:35you see the name itself indicates wild animals
31:38wild animals play a very important role in the ecosystem
31:41it's all complete chain they have they're a part of food cycle
31:44no matter how big it is or how small it is
31:47even a small fly can play an important part in maintaining the whole ecosystem
31:52but if you disturb that thing the whole ecosystem might collapse
31:56pet red is the biggest black market in the world after drugs
32:00so this is causing a lot of animals getting extinct from the wild
32:04but sitting at somebody's home
32:06we have two snakes
32:09there's one more
32:10there's one more
32:11oh my goodness
32:13this is awesome
32:14let's see what this one is
32:15this one also
32:18oh cool
32:19this is like a tiger
32:20don't they call it like a tiger or something?
32:22this is what the regular morphs look like
32:25you can't make this color in the wild?
32:26not at all
32:27no
32:28and they would not even survive in the wild
32:29so do you think they're being smuggled or sold illegally or who knows?
32:33the reptile are the easiest thing in the pet trade to smuggle
32:36yeah true
32:37you can see for us the head to body ratio is very messed up
32:42it tells us about that these animals will power fit
32:45so the breeders in order to get high value of these animals
32:49they power feed them
32:51power feeding means giving them less space to move
32:54and feeding them more and more time to time
32:56in order to get the snake bulkier and heavier
32:59so the more bulkier the animal the more heavier the more bigger the animal is
33:03the more money you can get
33:05these animals had a lot of trauma
33:08and we have received a lot of animals with respiratory infections
33:12and intestinal issues as well
33:15alright you hold that one
33:16yep
33:17it seems alright
33:18I'm going to get this one over here
33:19this huge one
33:20how's he look?
33:21wow
33:22also power fed?
33:23yeah
33:24yeah
33:25you see how wide the head is
33:26yeah
33:27and you see how wide the body is
33:28yeah
33:29Vantara plays a crucial role in all the rescued animals life
33:34we want to give them the best life we can
33:36they need proper temperature
33:38they need proper humidity
33:39they need proper grow lights
33:41if they feel too hot
33:42we have given water pools as well
33:44so it's all about provisions
33:45it's all about how can you enrich their life
33:47but in particular to these Burmese pithons
33:50for sure they'll get a better life in Vantara
33:52gives a feeling of accomplishment, completeness, inner peace, tranquility, relaxation
34:00any good feeling present in this world
34:03is felt by us when we rehabilitate these animals
34:06and so now they go from probably living in a tiny little box
34:10in somebody's house or collection
34:12to having this huge enclosure
34:14I don't necessarily think that snakes experience happiness the way that we do
34:20but I think they know the difference between being able to stretch out their bodies
34:24and be free roaming
34:25versus spending their life stuck in a box
34:28I don't care what being you are
34:30I don't even care if you're a house plant
34:31if you spend your life stuck in a tiny box
34:33you're confined, you're restricted
34:35your muscles atrophy
34:36your mental health declines
34:38when you get to stretch out and be a snake
34:40smell new smells
34:41climb, dig
34:42all the things that snakes do in the wild
34:44you're a happier snake
34:47they really hit the jackpot
34:48I love them
34:49good stuff man
34:50that's awesome
34:51that's awesome buddy
34:52that's great
34:53that's super cool
34:54let's leave them
34:55alright
34:56let them enjoy
35:07many of the animals that make it to Ventara
35:10have led lives of abuse and misery
35:13some have been kept in such awful conditions
35:17that their feet have never even touched grass before
35:24Loki and Luna were rescued from a circus in Mexico
35:27where they were expected to perform
35:33it might have looked fun to the audience who came to see them
35:36but the reality for intelligent animals like brown bears
35:39is often a life of physical and mental abuse
35:43which leaves them with both behavioral and medical problems
35:47and while circus bears cannot be returned to the wild
35:50Ventara can offer the next closest thing
35:53you see that
35:54I just got tasted
35:55yeah
35:56so this is a male female pair
35:58yeah
35:59and did they come here together?
36:00were they rescued?
36:01no, when they came here
36:02we kept them separately
36:04we completed their quarantine period
36:06and we tried to socialize them
36:08step by step
36:09and now they are together
36:10so they come in
36:12they go into quarantine
36:14yes
36:15but with any animal
36:17doesn't matter if you're a bear
36:18or an elephant
36:19or a mouse
36:20you can't just shove them together
36:21no
36:22so what happens after quarantine?
36:23so they're the step by step
36:25first of all what we do
36:26we try to keep them
36:27in the two different night sales
36:28so that they can see each other
36:30this one wants to French kiss me over here
36:32then second step is what we do
36:34we try to interchange their fecal and urine matter slightly
36:37to change so that the smell
36:38what you're saying is
36:39I take bear poop from here
36:41and I put it with this guy
36:43and I take bear pee from here
36:44and I mix it with this girl
36:45that's what you're saying
36:46exactly
36:47and the third step is
36:48we bring them together
36:49adjacent to two night sales
36:53so from there they can sniff very easily
36:55and that is a safe place to interact
36:57because that
36:58those two animals can
37:00take smell of each other
37:01and from that we go ahead
37:04Vantara is working on the world level
37:06not only on one particular state
37:08country or continent
37:09we are working on the world level
37:10wherever it's required
37:11we are there to help them
37:12I swear I am paying attention
37:14it's just really hard
37:15when a bear wants to give me a French kiss
37:17it is
37:18I am fortunate enough
37:19to be here on the day
37:20when the former circus bears
37:22Loki and Luna
37:23are officially introduced
37:24to their new home
37:25okay bears here we go
37:28here we go
37:29there they come
37:33there they come
37:34there they come
37:35wow
37:36look at that
37:37they get bolting out
37:38the main idea behind
37:42the main idea behind creating this enclosure
37:43is to provide ample amount of space
37:45to animals
37:46where they can do their natural activity
37:48we do four to five different types of enrichment
37:51so that animal can show his natural behaviour
37:54in the open environment
37:55I thought they will sniff
37:57and they will come slowly
37:58and what's going on
37:59but they are happy
38:00they want to explore everything
38:01you see
38:02yeah it's all new
38:03look at her
38:07yeah
38:08our cultures tell us to love animals
38:11you should take care of your surrounding
38:13like you take care of yourself
38:14because you are the part of nature
38:16if you take care of surrounding
38:18if you take care of those living creatures nearby you
38:22then nature will take care of yourself
38:30everyone needs food care and shelter
38:32whenever they are happy
38:35they are healthy
38:36I am happy
38:43it really moves me to see those bears
38:45finally get to feel the grass beneath their feet
38:50and although it's not the freedom they deserve as wild animals
38:55it will allow them to live out their days
38:57feeling safe
38:58and being well looked after
39:02oh
39:12and let's not forget Gori
39:13she's finally settled in
39:15and I have the very special privilege
39:18of getting the chance to feed her
39:20it's been a few days since Gori came to us here at Ventara and she has settled in just beautifully
39:33she's loving life now
39:46she's enjoying milk at an unbelievable rate
39:48and you can see the stress has gone
39:50and her life has improved massively
39:52which is
39:53it's just a beautiful thing to see
39:55she's so much happier now
40:03good girl
40:04good girl
40:05what makes facilities at Ventara so special is the intent
40:20it's a team work where we come together
40:22we discuss together
40:23we ask each other can we do something better
40:26this is the place that makes things happen
40:29that's all I can say
40:31as a human being I think it is our moral responsibility to keep animals very happy and as much comfortable as they can
40:41I think Gwantara is doing justice for all these animals
40:43I've not seen this kind of care
40:47special care
40:48anywhere else in the world
40:50and I'm you know
40:51I'm proud I'm here
40:54I would describe this place as to be heaven
40:56it is filled with everything that an animal can imagine about
41:00this feeling
41:02trust me this will give you goosebumps
41:04the animals we rescue
41:06the number of species that are rescued here
41:08it's all staggering
41:09and I'm very grateful to be a part of
41:12all of the good work that the organization does
41:15all the crazy ideas our team has
41:18has implemented on the ground
41:19anything which is beneficial for the animals
41:21gets done
41:22and results are in front of us
