Judo: Spectacular Middleweight Action in Zagreb

Day two of the Zagreb Grand Prix delivered thrilling middleweight battles. Gili Sharir, Giovanni Esposito, Shiho Tanaka, and Arnaud Aregba all struck gold, while Croatia’s Iva Oberan delighted the home crowd with a brilliant bronze finish.

00:00The second day of the 2025 Zagreb Grand Prix promised to be a spectacle for the judo family to enjoy.
00:07Inside the arena, the home fans were hopeful of some Croatian success.
00:12The crowd were treated to an opening ceremony consisting of a traditional Nagino-Karta demonstration
00:17from two local young judoka.
00:24Followed by speeches from Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Andrzej Plenković.
00:30IJF Head Sport Director, Mr. Vladimir Barta, Deputy Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Dr. Luka Kulajet,
00:36and President of the Croatian Judo Federation, Dr. Sander Ciorak.
00:41At under 63 kilograms, Gili Sharia won her first Grand Prix gold medal after outworking her opponent.
00:52Croatian Minister of Tourism and Sport, Mr. Tonsi Glavina, was on hand to award the medals.
00:57The under 73 kilogram category final saw Giovanni Esposito end things in an instant.
01:05After a failed attack from his Spanish opponent, a superb counter scored Ippon.
01:13He was awarded his medal by Mr. Albano Carisi, IJF Ambassador.
01:17I think it's a really good city, many kids that follow judo and a beautiful country.
01:27Last year I took a silver medal and this year I want to come back at home with a gold medal and this year it's happened.
01:33At under 70 kilograms, a dominant-looking Tanaka Shiho showed why she is world champion,
01:44expertly dispatching Clément's aim of France to take the gold before greeting her local fans.
01:49She was awarded her medal by City of Zagreb deputy mayor, Dr. Luca Korlayet.
01:59Having won the world championships, this was a tournament where I really felt that as world champion,
02:05I simply couldn't afford to lose.
02:08At under 81 kilograms, it was Arnaud Oregba who dominated the final.
02:12The Frenchman eventually overcame Bernd Fasching of Austria, throwing into a hold-down to end the contest.
02:22The medals were awarded by Paris 2024 Olympic champion Miss Barbara Matic.
02:30A strong showing from the home fighters produced some great judo throughout the second day.
02:37Topped off with a superb bronze medal for Eva Oberand.
02:40Wonderful hip movement and control of her opponent resulted in a thundering Ippon.
02:45Thoroughly enjoyed by Matic, the crowd and the Prime Minister.
