00:00I'm Luke McFarlane.
00:10I'm an actor, design enthusiast, and a woodworker.
00:15When I'm not on set filming movies,
00:17I'm pursuing a lifelong passion for carpentry and home renovation,
00:21a skill that's been passed down through my family.
00:26Together with my friend, interior designer Olivia Westbrooks,
00:29we will meet all kinds of families
00:32and breathe new life into their favorite spaces that have lost their way.
00:37We did good.
00:38It looks great.
00:41Our designs will honor family history,
00:44while making room for the present and the future.
00:48This is fantastic.
00:51We're here to restore what matters most.
00:56Because I believe memories should be built to last,
00:59and home is where the heart is.
01:11Morning.
01:12Good morning.
01:13Wow.
01:14I like the way this house kind of sits on this hill.
01:16Yeah.
01:17It's very charming.
01:18It is super charming.
01:19Shall we go inside?
01:20Yeah, let's do it.
01:21This house, it's so classic.
01:22It's like the kind of house that you asked a kid to draw a picture of a house.
01:25That's what it would look like.
01:26100%.
01:27All right.
01:28Hello.
01:29Hello.
01:30Hi.
01:31Good morning.
01:32So lovely to meet you.
01:33Rebecca.
01:34Good morning.
01:35Very nice to meet you.
01:36It's so nice to meet you.
01:37I've seen you in so many movies.
01:39Oh, really?
01:40It's so nice to be here.
01:41And you must be Leray.
01:42Yes.
01:43I'm so happy you're here.
01:45I would love to just hear a little bit about the house.
01:47It was built in the 80s by my father.
01:50It's kind of a traditional home with a rustic feel.
01:53I think this is pretty much typical for the time period.
01:57Yes, definitely built in the 80s.
02:00I've lived here most of my life.
02:02I've raised my kids here, and it's just been very much lived in.
02:05How old were you when you first came to this house?
02:07Eight years old.
02:08I was raised in this house, and when my parents were selling,
02:11I decided to buy the property from them, and I have raised my kids here.
02:16I have six children, four that have moved on to college and beyond,
02:20and I just have the two teenagers home with me now.
02:23All of the best memories of my life have been here.
02:25My children's first steps and many Christmases.
02:28I've wanted some renovations done for a long time,
02:31but obviously have a lot of kids to take care of,
02:33so it's mainly been a financial piece for me,
02:37and design is not my strong suit,
02:39so I hope you guys are going to give us what we need.
02:41So tell me a little bit about your dad, your husband.
02:44He passed several years ago from cancer.
02:46When my father passed away,
02:48it was definitely a big grieving process for me
02:50because my relationship with my dad was amazing.
02:54He was truly my hero, someone that I looked up to.
02:57He had the most gentle spirit and kind heart,
03:00and I was definitely a daddy's girl for sure.
03:03Yeah.
03:04I miss him a lot.
03:05I miss everything about him.
03:07He loved his children, and then when we had grandchildren,
03:12he was just crazy about them.
03:14And we'd always just get on the floor and play with them
03:16as much as possible.
03:17Children would climb up on him,
03:19and he would ride them all around,
03:21being a buck and bronco.
03:22Okay.
03:23I like that.
03:24That's good.
03:25We'd nickname him the cowboy.
03:27Cowboy.
03:28Yeah.
03:29He loved his cowboy hat, and he loved tractors.
03:32Should we bring you a tractor?
03:33I think we should plop it right in the middle of the living room.
03:35Okay, you're getting it.
03:36There we go.
03:37That would make him very happy.
03:38That would make him very happy.
03:39I think we can lean into that a little bit.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Okay.
03:42Well, I also think it's important for both of us
03:43to sort of honor what was here before
03:45and create a space that people want to continue to come back to.
03:48So I'm looking around.
03:49I see a big, beautiful space,
03:51but it does feel like it needs some updating.
03:54New and fresh.
03:55We can do new and fresh.
03:56Absolutely.
03:57So we would love to hear what new and fresh means to you.
04:00Well, everything just needs some love.
04:02We definitely want to update the home
04:05and have some new, fresh touches,
04:07but also preserve what my dad built in his memory.
04:10And because I lived here for most of my life,
04:13this renovation is kind of a symbol of my starting my next chapter.
04:17And it's definitely important to me
04:19that as my kids fly the nest and move on with their lives,
04:23that they have a home to come home to
04:25and a place that will always be home for them.
04:27You can see life lived in this house in every corner of it.
04:30You can see the banister.
04:32Oh, and the newel post.
04:34When people come up, they grab onto it,
04:36and it's taken all that paint off.
04:38That is just time, and that is love,
04:39and that's lots of little hands touching something.
04:41That's right.
04:42But yeah, new furniture will be amazing.
04:44And then my dad built the bookcases.
04:46And to help my mom out to bring firewood in for the fireplace,
04:50he made this little door going to the outside
04:53so that he could load wood into this cabinet here.
04:57That is genius.
04:59I'm getting a sense of what Danny was like.
05:01He liked a little secret.
05:03He liked a little bit of fun.
05:05I can't say that there wasn't a time or two
05:07that I climbed through there
05:08when I would lock myself out of the house as a teenager.
05:12I do love my bookcases,
05:14but I would definitely like to see some updates,
05:17maybe some fresh paint or something.
05:19Your dad built this mantle.
05:21Yes.
05:22Wow.
05:23This is what we call dentalized molding.
05:25You know why they call it dental molding?
05:26Because it looks like your teeth.
05:28Yeah, that's exactly it,
05:29and this is a very traditional sort of
05:31Greek revival kind of look.
05:32Could definitely use some updating.
05:34Well, I understand that we want to hold on
05:36to the things that his hands touched,
05:38and we don't want to just tear it all out.
05:39We're not about that.
05:40Right.
05:41So we're going to have to be very decisive
05:42about what stays and what goes.
05:44And what goes, yeah.
05:45Yeah.
05:46Rebecca, do you have any thoughts
05:47about what you would like to see here?
05:49I just don't want to see everything
05:50that he's touched be gone.
05:53My biggest fear with this renovation
05:56is that we will lose all of the sweet touches
06:00of what Danny did and his thoughtfulness
06:03and hard work that went into the house.
06:07I definitely want a more modern, updated space,
06:10but still honoring my father's memory.
06:12That's very important to me, too.
06:14Hopefully we can come to some common ground.
06:16Is this a family photo album?
06:18Yes, it sure is.
06:19Can I take a look?
06:20Of course, yeah.
06:21Help yourself.
06:22Fun.
06:23Who's that on the cover?
06:24That would be me.
06:25Yeah, that would be you.
06:26Wow.
06:27Yeah.
06:28And there's Danny.
06:29Yeah.
06:30He does give us cowboy vibes, for sure.
06:32Yes.
06:33My dad built my home with love and care.
06:36I want to honor his memory and my parents' legacy.
06:39You have a beautiful family.
06:41Thank you. Thank you.
06:42You really do.
06:43They're precious.
06:44Well, should we see the rest of the house?
06:45Yes, sir.
06:46Absolutely.
06:47I do have one extra special thing that my dad did
06:50and he installed into my pantry.
06:52It's a little bell.
06:53When my kids were little and we would visit my parents' house,
06:56they had a little bell mounted at their house
06:58and they loved to ring it.
06:59So my dad brought one and installed it for us at our house.
07:03It's mounted low because my dad put it in when my kids
07:06were little toddlers.
07:08Such a precious time in their lives to start building memories.
07:11Yes.
07:12As a rule, he told them that they could ring the bell
07:15only if they said something nice about someone else.
07:18Because one of my favorite lines that he said was,
07:21isn't loving each other fun?
07:23I like that.
07:24Yeah.
07:25It was just a way to encourage loving each other.
07:29And this is the way to the back deck.
07:32It sure is, yeah.
07:34Gosh, it's beautiful back here.
07:35Wow.
07:36And this deck was something that Danny built.
07:39Yep.
07:40One of my favorite jobs was actually building decks.
07:42Wow.
07:43I got to tell you, the first thing that I felt
07:44when I came onto this deck was how well built it was.
07:47Okay.
07:48I can feel it is solid.
07:49Right.
07:50And I think that's a testament to how good a builder your husband
07:53and your dad was.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Anything we add to this, it needs to have that same kind of strength
07:58and stability.
07:59But maybe giving you a little bit more shade.
08:01Oh, that would be, yes.
08:02I was going to say, being in Georgia, these summers are brutal.
08:05They really are.
08:06Yeah.
08:07You have such a large family and there's not a whole lot of places
08:10out here for y'all to get together.
08:11Very true.
08:12We need to fix that.
08:13Yeah.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Speaking of gathering spaces, I see back there it looks like
08:17another gathering space.
08:18That's true.
08:19My husband found out that LaRay wanted a fire pit.
08:22He showed up with a trailer full of stones and he and the kids built it
08:26and I came home one day and they had it all ready for me.
08:30Yeah.
08:31It's just about seen its best days.
08:32Yeah.
08:33It was really nice in the beginning, but it's been a long time
08:35and just falling down.
08:36And it just seems like it's so far away from where the party deck is.
08:40It's right.
08:41Very good.
08:42That's true.
08:43So I'm getting the sense that it was always important for you guys
08:45to have spaces where everybody could sit around to be together.
08:48That's right.
08:49That's right.
08:50My parents definitely made sure that this home when they built it
08:53was open to people and just very welcoming.
08:56And I want to get it back to that.
08:58All right.
08:59I think there's a way that we can freshen it up, make it beautiful,
09:02and keep Danny's spirit alive as well.
09:03Absolutely.
09:04Yes.
09:05I love that.
09:06Well, it is time to send you away.
09:07Don't go too far away because we may have to contact you about
09:10a few things here and there.
09:11Oh, yes.
09:12Absolutely.
09:13All right.
09:14Can't wait to show you what we're thinking of.
09:15All right.
09:16Thank you so much.
09:17Bye.
09:18Bye-bye, guys.
09:20My dream for my home is to be a place that's open and welcoming to everyone.
09:32All right.
09:33I want it to be a place where my kids want to come home to.
09:37Do you think we can do anything with this fabric?
09:39And I want it to be a comfortable space for people to enjoy.
09:42For me, change is always scary.
09:45So I'm pretty nervous.
09:47We really hope Luke and Olivia will be able to maintain the heart that we have in our home,
09:52but also preserve what my dad built in his memory.
09:55Luke and Olivia, we are counting on you.
09:57Last piece.
09:58Okay.
09:59Here we go.
10:07Luke.
10:08Olivia.
10:09Hi.
10:10I set up an office for us.
10:11You did.
10:12Yeah.
10:13A perfect meeting spot.
10:14Mm-hmm.
10:15Want to look at some pretty things?
10:16So I think Leray would like to see something completely new and fresh.
10:19Mm-hmm.
10:20But Rebecca wants to make sure that we still keep elements of Danny in the house.
10:23A kind of tricky situation.
10:24But that's why you hire professionals like us, right?
10:26Okay, that's right.
10:27Yes, yes, yes.
10:28We can give them the best of both worlds.
10:29Find a way to update some things in the house, but still leave traces of Danny's memory.
10:34Okay.
10:35Okay.
10:36Now that we've had a chance to go through Leray and Rebecca's home, the areas we're going
10:40to focus on are the family room, the deck, and the fire pit.
10:44So we'll start in the family room.
10:46Okay.
10:47What they really need is a lot of space for all the kids to come back home.
10:51So we want to maximize the seating as much as we can.
10:53Mm-hmm.
10:54So I'm thinking a two-sofa setup and maybe a couple more chairs so that everyone has a
10:59place to sit.
11:00One of the most exciting features of this living room is the fireplace.
11:03It's awesome, but it's red brick, which is, you know, a bit dark and worn.
11:08So to freshen it up, I want to give Leray the update and brightness that she's looking
11:13for.
11:14We can paint it a lighter color and it'll really draw the eye up to those amazing two-story
11:19ceilings.
11:20Also, I'm thinking something a little darker and moodier for the walls.
11:23Maybe charcoal, perhaps.
11:24What you think?
11:25I know it's a bit unexpected and a bold color choice, but I think a little mood on the walls
11:30with a high contrast would really make that fireplace stand out.
11:34And I really want to lean into Danny as a cowboy.
11:36That's such a fun story.
11:38So I want to add some accents, but with a southwestern twist, maybe some fun pillows,
11:43some colorful rugs, and incorporate some of his cowboy accessories.
11:47His hats and his boots were so cool.
11:50Now we also need to explore what to do with that fireplace mantle, which has that traditional
11:55dental molding, which does not say, I'm a cowboy.
11:58Definitely not.
11:59We can update that.
12:00Okay, so there's also these bookshelves on either side.
12:02Are we going to keep those?
12:03So I know Leray says that she wants something new and fresh.
12:06Mm-hmm.
12:07Now keep in mind there was that sort of secret pass-through underneath where the wood comes
12:11in.
12:12So maybe there's a way to sort of use the bottom part, maybe refresh the uppers.
12:16All right, so that's inside the house.
12:18Okay.
12:19Let's talk about the deck.
12:20The deck that Danny built.
12:21It's solid.
12:22Mm-hmm.
12:23It feels like it was made with love, but didn't really have a flow.
12:26And it needs some shade.
12:28I'm thinking of a four-post structure with rafters at the top, spaced out to allow fabric
12:34to hang through for that much-needed shade, and long enough so that I can figure out a
12:39unique design for the rafter tails.
12:41We could do something sort of like a rafter tail that has a sort of southwest vibe to
12:46it, and we're going to give them seating as well.
12:48We need lots of seating.
12:49Yeah.
12:50Let's talk about this fire pit.
12:51That fire pit is way out over here.
12:53It is.
12:54You have to walk a country mile to get to it.
12:56So we want to bring it as close as safety will allow so that these two outdoor spaces
13:01are in conversation with each other.
13:03Yeah.
13:04Okay, so let's rebuild the circle closer to the house and maybe add a path from the deck
13:08to it.
13:09And to your point, lots of fun seating for the whole family.
13:12For the fire pit, a metal cauldron on the inside of it would be great for safety and easy
13:16cleanup, and let's add some tile to the outside of it just to give it a little bit of pizzazz.
13:21But I don't know which direction I'm leaning, so I think we start with designing the fire
13:26pit, and then that'll help us make the choice about what tile to use around.
13:29All right.
13:30Should we get going?
13:31Yeah, let's go.
13:32Okay.
13:33Guys, such a classic house, isn't it?
13:35It's so pretty.
13:36Well, we're taking some risks here.
13:38I just hope we can give Rebecca and LeRae what they want.
13:56Hey.
13:57I see you thinking.
13:58What's going on?
13:59I am.
14:00I'm pondering.
14:01What have to do with these bookcases?
14:02The bookcases that Danny built them.
14:04Rebecca wants to keep them as is, right, with Danny's trap door, which is so cool.
14:08Right.
14:09Right.
14:10And at the same time, this is LeRae's house.
14:12Yeah.
14:13She wants that cool, fun vibe.
14:15We're going for that Southwestern, leaning into Danny being a cowboy look.
14:19A little more open, a little more contemporary, a little more updated, right?
14:22Yeah.
14:23I mean, this is not doing it.
14:24Well, I understand the dilemma.
14:25I mean, these are definitely well built.
14:27It's kind of a shame to see them go, but this is just a cabinet builder in me.
14:30I don't like seeing those little tracks on the inside.
14:32Yeah.
14:33And you know what?
14:34Scale two, they seem a little short.
14:35And we have such a great ceiling height here that it's kind of sad to not accentuate that.
14:40Yeah.
14:41I think what's going to be important is showing Rebecca and LeRae some options.
14:44Absolutely.
14:45So you know some cabinet makers here in town that have a showroom?
14:47They do.
14:48Great.
14:49I do.
14:50So I'd like to take them there and that'll help us narrow down what to do here.
14:52And since we're here, I got to point out something that I've been spending a lot of
14:56time thinking about.
14:57This mantle.
14:58I know Danny built it, but this dentalized molding is not giving me Southwest.
15:02It doesn't say yeehaw?
15:03No.
15:04It says, it says Greek Revival, but it's also connected to-
15:08The bookcase.
15:09So is there a way to maybe do something here that's going to relate a little bit more to
15:15the rest of the style?
15:16Yeah.
15:17I mean, the two have to go hand in hand, right?
15:18Yeah.
15:19What are you thinking?
15:20I think we have the opportunity with this mantle to sort of bring Danny's spirit back
15:24into the space somehow.
15:25Yeah.
15:26I think we can build something new to honor that.
15:28Yeah.
15:29Because if we're going to take part of it away, let's add a little bit back.
15:32Yeah?
15:33Yeah.
15:34Okay.
15:35With plans set for the living room, it's time to focus my attention on the pergola out
15:40back, which will give this deck some much-needed shade.
15:43I just need to figure out where I want to put it.
15:46We've got the 6x6 posts.
15:49So here's the thought.
15:50What if we brought the posts actually in, so we can still get that overhang, and then
15:54the posts would actually be on the front side of the bench.
15:57And we could tie it in to this.
16:00Okay.
16:01What do you think of that?
16:02That way we could even just cut out the existing decking and then just bolt it to that.
16:06Tie it right to the joist.
16:07Yeah.
16:08It's not a bad idea.
16:09You want to put one up and see what it looks like?
16:10Yeah, sure.
16:11Yeah.
16:12You like to get the heaviest lumber they have?
16:14I do.
16:15The wettest, heaviest.
16:16The wettest, heaviest.
16:17All right.
16:18These are solid beams, which is what this deck deserves because we're definitely going
16:21to make something as solid as Danny was.
16:24I like that because if you stand over here, Brad, you can see that it's sort of equal spacing
16:30between those spindles.
16:31Looks a little more intentional.
16:32Exactly.
16:33And that gives us pretty standard bench depth.
16:36Yeah, I like it.
16:37Then we also get that opportunity with those 16 footers to overhang a little bit with our
16:41rafter tails.
16:42Okay.
16:43I think this design is going to really go with the rest of the flavor on what we're doing
16:45on the inside.
16:46Yeah.
16:47I think so too.
16:48Get at it.
16:49Thanks.
16:50So we're here at one of my favorite showrooms.
16:55Okay.
16:56And they have a few shelving options for the bookcases in your living room.
16:59Okay.
17:00And I know that you two have a differing opinion about what to do with those bookcases.
17:03A little bit.
17:04So I thought that instead of talking about them, we can start to see some things in person.
17:08And that may help us decide what direction to go in.
17:10Absolutely.
17:11All right.
17:12Come on this way.
17:13This is my happy place.
17:14Oh, it's beautiful.
17:17So right over here is a vignette that showcased a bookcase that's very similar to the one
17:22that you already have.
17:23Okay.
17:24We have a base cabinet.
17:25We have a hutch that sits on top with shelving.
17:28So we can keep what you have, maybe make a few adjustments to the scale of it.
17:32I think what's in there now is a little short.
17:34You have these really tall ceilings.
17:35Right.
17:36And so we want to stay in proportion to that.
17:38Right.
17:39So we can build it up and then maybe add some color on the cabinets.
17:43What do you think about that?
17:44I like that.
17:45Yeah?
17:46Rebecca?
17:47Might have to talk her into it a little bit.
17:49I'm nervous about all of the changes to the house.
17:52Might be kind of hard to reach those top shelves.
17:54I'm just...
17:55That's what I was wondering.
17:56I was thinking.
17:57Yeah, that's where you would put your things that you don't access on a day-to-day basis.
18:01Another thing that we can do is swap out the hardware because it'll give it a really pretty update.
18:06You know, the hardware is like the jewelry.
18:07Yes.
18:08On cabinets, it's like adding earrings to your outfit, right?
18:10Exactly.
18:11Let's bring it out of the 80s, please.
18:13Hey, the 80s were a great time.
18:14They were.
18:15You grew up in the 80s.
18:16Hey, great things came from the 80s.
18:18I'm looking at one.
18:19So, bringing it into the now.
18:21Right.
18:22Option two, floating shelves, right?
18:24Okay.
18:25That's all the rage.
18:26Yes.
18:27Oh, is it?
18:28We're going to paint the base cabinets.
18:29So, we're still keeping Danny's work intact.
18:31Right.
18:32Okay.
18:33But then we jazz it up a little up top.
18:35We can stain them like you see here.
18:37Okay.
18:38Right?
18:39We can paint the base cabinet to give you a two-tone finish.
18:41We can paint it all the same color.
18:42There are so many options, but this will definitely give you a more modern and updated look.
18:46What do you think about that?
18:47It's a possibility.
18:48Rebecca, what do you think?
18:49I don't think so.
18:55You don't like it?
19:03Well, somebody's going to have to do a lot of convincing.
19:06Is it that it feels kind of too contemporary, too modern?
19:10Yeah.
19:11Too different or something.
19:12Well, I would suggest that it also is very open.
19:16And we can make the space feel more proportioned.
19:19Are they this wide?
19:20Do they go all the way to the fireplace?
19:21We can make them whatever we want.
19:22Oh, okay.
19:23Whatever we want to make them.
19:24They're going to be custom built for you.
19:26I really want to just make my house new and bright and fresh.
19:30But I do worry about doing anything that would upset my mom.
19:34I'm nervous about change.
19:36I can't visualize how it's going to be.
19:39Well, this is a nice option because it's just sort of staggered.
19:42Um, perhaps.
19:44Can you think about it?
19:46I can think about it.
19:47Okay, I'll take it.
19:48All right.
19:50Since Danny's been gone, I'm having a really hard time.
19:53letting go of the past.
19:55But I'll work my way through it.
19:57It's going to be beautiful.
19:59I understand it's hard making changes like this.
20:02But, you know, I really need this for my kids and for me.
20:07This house, like a book, has different chapters.
20:10Yes.
20:11The first chapter, a little girl.
20:12Yes.
20:13Being raised in the house.
20:14Mm-hmm.
20:15The second chapter, that little girl becomes a mom.
20:17Right.
20:18She raises her own family in that house.
20:19And the third chapter is that little girl who became a mom is now living in the house as an empty nester.
20:25Yes.
20:26So we really want this to be a space where you feel comfortable and you feel a lot of joy.
20:30Right.
20:31I love that.
20:32Yes.
20:33I do too.
20:34And the bottom line is, this is her house.
20:36I just want her and the children to be happy, you know.
20:39And so ultimately, you're going to get to make the decisions and you're going to support them.
20:45Well, yeah, even if I don't like them.
20:49Maybe that's the most important lesson right there.
20:51Maybe we don't always agree.
20:52That's right.
20:53But we support.
20:54So sweet.
20:55You know I love you.
20:56Yes, of course.
20:57That is a beautiful thing watching you all.
20:58Oh, you're so sweet.
20:59That is.
21:00Yeah.
21:01Yeah.
21:07Okay, Olivia, that trip was very useful.
21:10Yeah.
21:11I know Rebecca was really concerned about us touching these bookcases.
21:14Yes.
21:15Which is why we started painting around them.
21:18But since she kind of gave us the okay, I think it's safe to try something different and give Loree that fresh start that she's looking for.
21:24So we are taking them away.
21:26Not fully.
21:27No.
21:28I think we keep the base.
21:29Okay.
21:30Because that gives Rebecca a little something of what she wants.
21:31Yep.
21:32Danny's work stays intact.
21:33Down there, we still have that trap door.
21:35I think we just take the top part off.
21:37All right.
21:38Well, we have painted.
21:39So we have to take these down with as much care as possible.
21:42So let's do it carefully.
21:43Let's.
21:44You're going to help me.
21:45Oh, I'm sorry.
21:46Come again?
21:47Absolutely.
21:48How about I start with just taking the shelves off?
21:50That's a good place to start.
21:51I like that job.
21:52We're trying to preserve the manicure, honey.
21:53Okay.
21:54Yes.
21:55Are you just going to watch me?
21:56You're going to get busy.
21:57Oh, I'm going to let you start.
22:04Good stuff.
22:05Yep.
22:06That's it.
22:07Oh, right here.
22:10Showtime.
22:11Ooh.
22:12Painters are going to love that.
22:13I knew that was going to happen.
22:14That's all right.
22:15Just a little paint touch up.
22:16That's all.
22:17I'll ask you to get painted behind here anyway.
22:18So.
22:19There you go.
22:20I want to step back and look at it now.
22:21It already feels more open.
22:22It does.
22:23And just imagine the possibilities.
22:24But now.
22:25Our mantle.
22:26Yeah.
22:27I mean, it's got to come off and we have to do something different.
22:28I think we also have to do something that's going to honor the family.
22:29Okay.
22:30I'm intrigued.
22:31I want to put something back up here that's going to pay off.
22:32I want to put something back up here that's going to pay off for us.
22:33I'll ask you to get painted behind here anyway.
22:34So.
22:35There you go.
22:36I want to step back and look at it now.
22:37Okay.
22:38It already feels more open.
22:39It does.
22:40And just imagine the possibilities.
22:41But now.
22:42Our mantle.
22:43Yeah.
22:44I mean, it's got to come off.
22:45And we have to do something different.
22:46I think we also have to do something that's going to honor the family.
22:49Okay.
22:50I'm intrigued.
22:51I want to put something back up here that's going to pay homage to Danny.
22:55And I think it's going to tie together with what we're thinking on either side here.
23:00Maybe someone's got a personal touch to it.
23:02I like that idea.
23:03Do you trust me?
23:04I do.
23:05I'm excited to see you execute that.
23:07So should we try to take this off?
23:09Let's take apart this puppy.
23:14All right, Dad.
23:15Yeah.
23:17Oh, look at that.
23:18I can skip my workout for the day.
23:20Yeah.
23:23Wow.
23:24Good work, partner.
23:25Boom.
23:26I feel really good about this space.
23:27It feels fresh.
23:28It feels open.
23:29It's a new start.
23:30Yeah.
23:31And that's what she needs.
23:32That's exactly what she needs.
23:33Yeah.
23:37Speaking of new beginnings, we still have to sort out what we want to do with the old fire pit.
23:41And where we want to place the new one.
23:46Hello.
23:47Hi.
23:48Rebecca, LeRae, I want you to meet my friend Mark.
23:50Hi, Mark.
23:51Nice to meet you.
23:52Nice to meet you.
23:53Hi, Mark.
23:54He is an artist.
23:55He works with metal.
23:56He works with stone.
23:57But he also knows a lot about fire safety.
23:58How can you make this safe for everybody?
24:00The main role is 10 feet away from any structure or house.
24:04Mm-hmm.
24:05Having the fire pit closer to the house will bring people closer together rather than having
24:09this great big distance.
24:10Okay.
24:11Let's see how close to the house we can go.
24:13Yeah.
24:14It's also going to be important for us to find a nice flat area.
24:17So here's 10 feet.
24:1810 feet right here.
24:19That feels nice.
24:20Yeah.
24:21We got a nice flat area here for sure so we can build that.
24:23This feels great.
24:24So we have these stones from the original fire pit.
24:26Oh my goodness.
24:27And they are heavy.
24:28The heaviest one.
24:29I know.
24:30They are.
24:31Danny touched these stones and we want to figure out how we can integrate them into our
24:35new fire pit.
24:36So we're going to ask you to add a personal touch to some of these stones.
24:40With paint, I think it would be an amazing ode to Danny.
24:44One for you, Rebecca.
24:45One for you, Laray.
24:46And one for each of the kids.
24:47I think let's get them involved in this project too, right?
24:50This is so fun.
24:51I have some artists in the family.
24:52I can't wait to see what they come up with.
24:54Well, we better get to it because if I have to carry the stone any longer.
24:58You're going to blow out of it.
24:59I'm going to blow out my shoulders.
25:01You know what?
25:02Stop being such a voice.
25:03Oh, there it is.
25:05You guys ready with that post?
25:22Down, down.
25:24With the deck well underway, it's time to check in with my friend Mark and see how things
25:28are going with the new fire pit.
25:30I think this is a good size.
25:31Yeah.
25:32So Mark, the other thing that we really want to do is bring that Southwestern vibe out
25:36here.
25:37So we were hoping if this was like the capper stone.
25:39Yeah.
25:40And underneath, we could create a surface to sort of place some tile.
25:43Border it with some tile.
25:44Give it some pizazz.
25:45New with the old.
25:46Yeah.
25:47Is that good?
25:48So we're looking at these.
25:49We have a few different sizes.
25:51We have some larger pieces here.
25:53We have some smaller ones.
25:55And so we kind of need some direction from you about what size we go with to build this
26:00size fire pit.
26:01Yeah.
26:02Are you going to do all the same?
26:03Yeah.
26:04I'm thinking the entire base all the way around is the same tile.
26:08And then we just let the capstones with the family's personalizations.
26:12Sit on top of it.
26:13Yeah.
26:14I would go 15 inches around that.
26:16Depending on how these line up, this would be the good size.
26:20I like that.
26:21I think that's a good, a good accent there.
26:23Not this one though.
26:24It doesn't give me that Southwest vibe.
26:25Nope.
26:26So then I've got to go back to the drawing board to find something that blends these two
26:29together.
26:30Fantastic.
26:31Great.
26:32Thank you so much.
26:33It's always good to work as a team.
26:34Yeah.
26:35Collaboration.
26:36Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
26:37Yes.
26:38The reno is coming along, but now I really have to finalize my design for the rafter tails.
26:47And because Danny built this deck, I want to make sure that I honor his memory with something
26:52that both Loray and Rebecca are going to love.
26:55So Brad, these top pieces to the pergola are going to run this way.
27:00And this is going to give us something for the fabric to attach to so we can get that
27:03nice shaded space we want.
27:04Okay.
27:05So I think this is a great opportunity to add a little bit of Southwestern flair.
27:09And I just think it's really nice to have a rafter tail that's got a little bit of a personality.
27:13Yeah, let's try it.
27:25All right.
27:30That kind of gets us an idea.
27:32Mm-hmm.
27:33Maybe we want to put this on an angle too.
27:34The end.
27:35The end.
27:36I like that.
27:37Yeah.
27:38Let's try to do that.
27:47Well, it feels a bit better.
27:48Yeah.
27:49Yeah.
27:50I like that that one's square and these two are on an angle.
27:51It looks good.
27:52Yeah.
27:53All right.
27:54Let's do it.
27:55All right.
27:56Here we go.
27:57Okay.
27:58Good?
27:59Yep.
28:00I got it.
28:01All right.
28:02About six.
28:03Yeah, it's somewhere about there.
28:05Okay.
28:06Well, I'm happy with the distance of the overhang.
28:08Yeah, that looks good.
28:09And Brad, since I have you here, I wanted to take a look at the bench we're building.
28:13Because I'm not exactly sure where or how it's going to work yet, but I was so delighted
28:17by that little secret door that Danny has inside.
28:19Mm-hmm.
28:20I kind of want to do something similar out here.
28:22Into the bench.
28:23I think that makes the most sense.
28:25Do we have enough room between those to create a space?
28:28I think so.
28:29I think especially at this point in the build, like we can do whatever we want.
28:32Okay, good.
28:33That's what I wanted to hear.
28:34All right.
28:35Well, let's get back to cutting more of those rafter tails.
28:36Loving more to go.
28:38Yeah.
28:39Yeah.
28:40Yeah.
28:41Yeah.
28:42Yeah.
28:43Well, LeRae and her family paint the stones.
28:46We're checking in on Mark and seeing how the fire pit is coming together.
28:52Ooh, Mark has made some progress.
28:55Yes.
28:56Yeah.
28:57Took a little bit of work making a perfect circle, but I mortared them.
29:01Now I'm putting them in a skim coat before we can do the tile.
29:03Wow.
29:04That's awesome.
29:05They call me the mortar man.
29:07I think that's an appropriate title.
29:09And I just want to understand, this is going to sit right inside?
29:13That's the idea.
29:14I made that at my shop.
29:15Oh, that's going to be nice.
29:16Oh, that looks amazing.
29:17Oh, that's going to make it a lot easier for cleanup, too.
29:18Yeah.
29:19Yeah.
29:20That's going to be great.
29:21So we understand you have some questions about tile layout?
29:23Yeah, what's the tile you guys got?
29:25Yeah.
29:26It's really cool.
29:27It has that southwestern pattern that we are incorporating throughout the rest of the design.
29:31Yeah.
29:32And it seems like we can install this a few different ways.
29:34We got like this, a little square on the inside.
29:37Yeah.
29:38Which would be the more traditional way to lay this out.
29:41Very symmetrical.
29:42All right, what's our other option?
29:43What if we do that?
29:45Okay.
29:46And I couldn't help but notice.
29:49It looks like a house.
29:50It looks like a house.
29:51It is a house.
29:52I know that that's not totally the way it's supposed to be done, but I just, I think it's
29:57adorable.
29:58Home is where the heart is.
30:00I think it's kind of cute.
30:02I dig it.
30:03Well, the other thing we've got to talk about is these painted stones.
30:06Oh, yeah.
30:07So, originally the idea was to incorporate them along the top of the fire pit?
30:11Yeah, as a cap.
30:12But the orientation kind of changed, so we didn't get that.
30:15We got this.
30:16We didn't tell them specifically what we needed.
30:17Right.
30:18Oh my gosh.
30:19We kind of end up with a bit of a wonky situation.
30:21Yeah, that's not going to work.
30:22And I don't know if I can take my sunset kind of that way.
30:26Do you have any ideas of how else we could incorporate these?
30:29Well, we're doing some gravel piece stone work around the fire pit, right?
30:34That's right.
30:35And we're going to need some sort of a walkway from the deck to the fire pit.
30:39Yep.
30:40That way we could incorporate some of these other ones that we haven't used and create
30:45that pathway out of it.
30:46That pathway.
30:47Yeah.
30:48I think that'd be cool.
30:49I like that idea.
30:50I'm happy.
30:51I think we found some good solutions.
30:52Yeah, I think so too.
30:53Thanks so much.
30:54All right.
30:55Time is ticking, but I finally figured out a way to honor Danny's memory with the mantle.
30:59I'm going to use a favorite high-tech tool of mine to engrave one of Danny's favorite sayings,
31:04a saying that really resonated with me.
31:07Here, I brought you some water.
31:08I appreciate you very much.
31:09It's so hot.
31:10It's so hot.
31:11It's so hot.
31:12Mmm.
31:13So what exactly are we building here?
31:16So we know we want to recreate that mantle, right?
31:19Oh, okay.
31:20This is what you told me to trust you on.
31:23That's right.
31:24So this is a really neat tool that I have.
31:26It's just a really easy way to personalize it.
31:28It's kind of like a computerized cutter.
31:31Gotcha.
31:32Basically, I tell it what shapes I want it to make, and it does that for me.
31:36So you use this to cut a design into the wood?
31:38Exactly.
31:39It's going to be an opportunity to specifically honor the family with a remembrance of Danny.
31:44That is so cool.
31:45So...
31:50Ah!
31:51Look at that!
31:52That is so cool.
31:55I feel like when you were learning how to write...
31:58Mm-hmm.
31:59...persons, you did something like this in those little notebooks.
32:01Exactly.
32:02With the dotted lines.
32:03Like tracing with the dotted lines.
32:04Yeah.
32:05Does it make you nervous that I'm staring over your shoulder while you're doing it?
32:08So much of what I do, there's somebody watching, so...
32:12I love this!
32:14Oh my gosh.
32:15That's amazing!
32:16A little bit of technology to inject a little bit of heart.
32:20They are going to love this.
32:22Well, you only have like 45,000 more letters to go, right?
32:25Nah, it's not going to be that bad.
32:27But give me 45 minutes and I'll show you what I've done.
32:29All right.
32:30All right.
32:31I'll leave you to it.
32:32You gotta be able to ring the bell.
32:40Get ready to ring it.
32:41Ring the bell?
32:42But you gotta say something nice.
32:43Remember that.
32:44I'm really happy with how this turned out.
32:47Yeah.
32:48Ring the bell.
32:50Ready for the fun part.
32:55There we go.
32:56Towards you.
32:57Towards you.
33:02Aren't these fun?
33:07It's like Christmas.
33:10Ooh.
33:11I love these.
33:12Right?
33:13That leather gives that cowboy feel.
33:15Absolutely.
33:16Olivia, this looks great.
33:17It gives the space a whole new vibe.
33:20Mm-hmm.
33:21Do you think Danny would approve?
33:22Yeah.
33:23Well, he's definitely in this space.
33:24That's going to make me cry.
33:25Oh.
33:26We did good.
33:27We did good.
33:28Pat on the back.
33:29We did.
33:30I don't want to get you too dirty.
33:31I really hope they like it.
33:40Today's the day.
33:41How are you feeling?
33:42Yes.
33:43Well, a little anxious.
33:44Very excited.
33:45Maybe a little nervous too, but...
33:47Yeah.
33:49Come on in.
33:50Welcome home again.
33:51Okay.
33:52Go right on in and look around.
33:53Oh, my gosh.
33:54Oh, my word.
33:56This is beautiful.
33:57Beautiful.
33:58Oh, my gosh.
34:01Oh, my gosh.
34:02This is great.
34:07Look at this.
34:08This is wonderful.
34:09This is incredible.
34:10Wow.
34:11Wow.
34:12The inspiration for the room was Danny is a cowboy.
34:15So, the design itself is all about Southwestern Cowboy.
34:18It's gorgeous.
34:19And I love the picture of the barn over there.
34:22And Danny's boots.
34:23Yeah, the boots and his hat.
34:25Oh, my word.
34:27I love it.
34:28This is fabulous.
34:29We've got some leather details.
34:30The lamps are leather.
34:31Oh, my gosh.
34:32We wanted it to feel casual and comfortable, but still dressed up, elevated, sophisticated.
34:38An ode to Danny, right?
34:39I love it so much.
34:40I can't tell you enough.
34:42And then the amount of seating we have.
34:44Exactly.
34:45So much more seating than you had before.
34:47Definitely.
34:48I am so excited to host Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.
34:51I gotta tell you, I'm really happy with how these bookcases came out.
34:55Oh, my gosh.
34:56The shelves are beautiful.
34:57Look at this.
34:58That's so pretty.
34:59I never knew it could look this good.
35:01I know you were concerned about us modifying it and taking that top piece off.
35:05But as you can see, it really opens up that space.
35:08And then it draws your eye all the way up to the ceiling.
35:11As we took them apart, we could tell that they were built so well.
35:13He built these shelves like he built his family.
35:15Yeah.
35:16You know, solid.
35:17Really strong.
35:18With care and love.
35:19This is incredible.
35:20I don't even know where to look next.
35:22We painted the brick.
35:23I love it.
35:24It needed that so badly.
35:25Yes, it did.
35:26I love the mantle.
35:28Oh, my God.
35:29I love it.
35:30To find a way to bring Danny back into this space.
35:33With the mantle, the idea to put the quote on it, which was something that I carved.
35:38You did it?
35:39You did great.
35:40That's gorgeous.
35:41Yeah.
35:42When you were talking about, you know, isn't loving each other fun?
35:45We were trying to think of a way of sort of incorporating that.
35:47That is perfect.
35:48I'm my crush.
35:49I know, right?
35:50I know.
35:51That's so wonderful.
35:52I love it.
35:53This is so sweet.
35:54And he'll be a part of all the family moments moving forward.
35:57It's so sweet.
35:58Right there.
35:59Absolutely.
36:00Oh, this is such a small little detail, but so many of our conversations were just about
36:04holding on to the old, and I just became so obsessed with seeing something that all the
36:09kids' hands had touched us as they flew up the stairs.
36:11And the paint came off, so we just put a shellac over it to preserve it.
36:15Okay.
36:16It holds all the history.
36:17All the generations that grew up here and that will continue to be here.
36:19Blue hands.
36:20I think it's such a really cool detail.
36:22You guys nailed it.
36:23Absolutely nailed it.
36:24Exceeded my expectations for sure.
36:26I feel just so incredibly grateful just to see all the love and blood, sweat, and tears
36:33and everything that they've poured into it.
36:35All right.
36:36You ready?
36:37Yes.
36:38Come on out.
36:39Oh, my God.
36:40Oh, my God.
36:41Come on through.
36:42Oh, my God.
36:43Oh, my God.
36:44Oh, my word.
36:45Look at this.
36:46This is gorgeous.
36:47Look at all this.
36:49That's amazing.
36:50Oh, my God.
36:51Wow.
36:52Oh, my God.
36:53We took that Southwestern theme from the inside.
36:56Yep.
36:57And moved it to the outside.
36:58I see.
36:59We put together a cowboy Southwestern inspired deck.
37:03This is incredible, you guys.
37:04It is so good.
37:05This is so beautiful.
37:06We wanted to finish the space that Danny started.
37:09Well, most importantly, we wanted to give you some shade.
37:12Yeah.
37:13Oh, my gosh.
37:14Right.
37:15That's great.
37:16We built this pergola, put this piece of fabric up.
37:18Wanted to make sure that it was good and high so that it didn't take any sunlight away from the kitchen.
37:22True, right.
37:23And wanting to bring a bit of a Southwest vibe.
37:25If you notice the raptor tails have a little shape to them, just make it a little special.
37:29That Southwest theme, you see it in the fabric and the pillows.
37:32And again, seating.
37:33We wanted to make sure that we provided you with enough conversation areas, right?
37:37You can sit on the bench on that side.
37:38Right.
37:39You can chill over here in the shady side.
37:41We have this fun swing here.
37:43Right.
37:44And then over on this side, we have some beautiful rocking chairs.
37:46So there are a lot of different areas for you to interact and engage with one another.
37:51And another thing we did, we were so taken with the smart little door that the firewood
37:56came in.
37:57We thought, well, we need to create another secret little door.
38:01So we have this.
38:02Oh, my gosh.
38:03That's perfect.
38:04Grab something from an ice bucket.
38:06Wonderful.
38:07So your two secret doors are fire and ice.
38:10Oh, there we go.
38:11I love it.
38:12You guys thought of everything.
38:14It's incredible.
38:15When we first met, you showed us something that Olivia and I were both really touched by.
38:19Danny's bell.
38:20Oh, my gosh.
38:21I don't think you can see it yet.
38:23I love it.
38:24So we gave the bell a space.
38:26That is great.
38:27The tradition was you get to ring the bell when you say something.
38:30nice about someone.
38:31That's right.
38:32I have lots of nice things to say about you guys.
38:35Aw.
38:37She's going to be ringing that bell always.
38:39Absolutely.
38:40You guys are amazing.
38:41I love Luke and Olivia.
38:42Oh, thank you so much.
38:43Yay.
38:44We do have one more space we want to show you.
38:46Okay.
38:47Please make your way down.
38:48Let's go.
38:49Okay.
38:50Oh, my goodness.
38:51Oh, look at this.
38:53Wow.
38:54That is so sweet.
38:55Oh, my gosh.
38:56I love it.
38:57Look at that.
38:58We gave you more seating.
39:00Exactly.
39:01This is so great.
39:03Danny would love it.
39:05Absolutely.
39:06So, again, we brought in the Southwestern Flare with the tile that we placed around it.
39:10I love it.
39:11Yes.
39:12And this was a bit of a happy accident.
39:13The way the pattern matched up, it kind of looks like a little house.
39:16It does.
39:17It does.
39:18It's so funny.
39:19Mark, he did such a beautiful job.
39:20Yes, he did.
39:21That's the prettiest fire pit I've ever seen.
39:24I like the idea of the rock being around the fire pit.
39:27That's great.
39:28Well, we wanted to hold on to the rocks that were part of the original builds.
39:32Mm-hmm.
39:33We reused the stones from the original pit that Danny built with your kids.
39:36I love it so much.
39:37Me too.
39:38It's wonderful.
39:39It adds such a fun punch of color.
39:40It sure does.
39:41This is so beautiful.
39:42Do you think your kids are going to love it?
39:44They are going to be over the moon.
39:46You guys are the best.
39:47Yes.
39:49Thank you so much.
39:50I'm thrilled that y'all are so happy with it.
39:52I love it.
39:53I could not be happier.
39:54It's been our pleasure because you guys are so deserving.
39:58Aw.
40:00Home is where the heart is, and you guys have just really made ours such an incredible space
40:04now.
40:05Right.
40:06I feel like you guys are family now at this point.
40:07I know.
40:08It's going to be hard to leave.
40:09Group hug.
40:10Absolutely.
40:11You guys are amazing.
40:14I love Luke and Olivia.
40:17They have just been amazing through this whole process, and I love all the changes Luke and
40:21Olivia made.
40:22Every detail was well thought out, well planned, and well executed.
40:26I'm super happy.
40:27I have a wonderful place my kids can come home to, and they will come visit for holidays
40:32and events and birthdays.
40:34Danny would have really loved all of the additions.
40:38He would have probably did a big yahoo.
40:42This is beautiful.
40:43Thank you, Isaac.
40:47I'm really excited for this new chapter of my life, and I feel like this whole process
40:52has just been a page turner for me, and I'm super excited to see what my future holds.
40:56There was this really cute photo that your mom showed us when we started the whole process.
41:00Oh, yeah.
41:01With you all on your dad's back.
41:03Yes.
41:04So we wanted to remember your grandfather with one of the things he said a lot.
41:09Yeah.
41:10So that was something we engraved on that.
41:12And Luke did that.
41:13Really?
41:14Do you think this is a place that you would like to come back to?
41:18Absolutely.
41:19Absolutely.
41:20I think I might just have to move back in.
41:23Yay!
41:24I'm glad you love it.
41:25We took a lot of bread.
41:26You guys truly nailed it.
41:31They say that all is for the heart.
41:36Like the sky is for the sun and for the stars.
41:42All is for the heart.
