00:00I'm Luke McFarlane, I'm an actor, design enthusiast, and a woodworker.
00:14When I'm not on set filming movies, I'm pursuing a lifelong passion for carpentry and home renovation,
00:21a skill that's been passed down through my family.
00:26Together with my friend, interior designer Olivia Westbrooks, we will meet all kinds of families
00:33and breathe new life into their favorite spaces that have lost their way.
00:37We did good.
00:38It looks great!
00:41Our designs will honor family history, while making room for the present and the future.
00:47Look at that! This is fantastic!
00:51We're here to restore what matters most.
00:55Because I believe memories should be built to last, and home is where the heart is.
01:11This one's cool!
01:12I'm excited about this because it is near the water.
01:15Oh, and you know, I love the water.
01:16I love the water too.
01:17Being an Aquarius is my thing.
01:19Oh!
01:20How about that?
01:21Shall we?
01:22Yes, please.
01:23Hi!
01:24Hi!
01:25Hi!
01:26Hello!
01:27Hi!
01:28Nancy, I give home.
01:29Hi!
01:30I'm Nancy.
01:31I'm Lauren.
01:32I'm Honey.
01:33And I'm the matriarch of this family, with three generations here.
01:38And why do you say three generations?
01:39One, two, three.
01:40Oh, okay.
01:41Because we have more than that existing.
01:43Why are you correcting me?
01:45You can say three generations right here.
01:47Are y'all typing this?
01:48Yes.
01:49Wow, look at that lake!
01:53So I imagine that view is a major reason why you decided to build this house.
01:58Yes.
01:59We built this house like 50 years ago.
02:02We started out in Atlanta.
02:04And my husband told me we were going to the lake and we were going to build a house.
02:10The city life was closing in on us, so he wanted to get away.
02:14Our family is big.
02:15We have many generations that come here to celebrate holidays and special events.
02:19But right here, we're three generations of women.
02:21And our family is all girls.
02:23We have some boys sprinkled in, but mostly all girls here.
02:26We don't have any little boys.
02:28We don't have boys.
02:29We don't know what to do with boys.
02:30We don't make boys.
02:31I have two girls myself.
02:32Do you?
02:33Yes.
02:34I have one girl and two sisters and four nieces.
02:37And we have nine deaf people in our family.
02:39When we do gather, we have a lot of people that are deaf that read lips, so we need an
02:45open space facing each other where they can read lips and see what we're saying.
02:50So it looks like you have a few different zones here.
02:52How does that work for you as a family?
02:54We're kind of separated sometimes, but a lot of times the deaf kids end up at the table
03:00or somewhere over there sitting together because they sign.
03:04We do separate, and this one's talking, that one's talking, and everybody laughs.
03:08You know, they're like, what's so funny?
03:10Right.
03:11It makes it hard.
03:12What does the house mean for you, having now three generations celebrated many events here,
03:17many memories were made here?
03:18Well, it means everything because my family comes here to celebrate.
03:22I get them here.
03:23So we just get together here for holidays and everything.
03:26Big Christmas tree over there.
03:28And this is the family home.
03:30This is the family gathering place.
03:32This has always been where holidays have been, showers have been, any kind of celebration.
03:36You know, you know when you're coming here, you are going to be surrounded by people that love you and care for you and celebrate you.
03:43So I can't imagine a time where you didn't want to come here.
03:47I hope when I'm gone, which I won't be here forever, that they will keep the house so they'll all have a place to get together.
03:56Well, it definitely has a very specific vibe.
03:59It looks like it stayed the same this entire time.
04:02Oh, it has.
04:03Yeah.
04:04This room has stayed the same except for furniture and carpet.
04:07Carpet.
04:08You have these tall ceilings.
04:09You have this wood paneling.
04:11Cedar was the in thing in the 70s, late 70s.
04:15This house is definitely Honey's style.
04:19Vintage is a good word.
04:21It's just out of date.
04:23It's stuck in the 70s and we just need to get out.
04:27So I would imagine that the three of you have very different opinions about what you would like to see in this space.
04:32Is there anything that you would like to change?
04:34Everything.
04:35All of it.
04:38My mom is very set in her ways and very strong-willed.
04:45So it takes a lot to convince her of things.
04:49Honey is very set in her ways and her routine.
04:52As you can tell, nothing has really changed in here.
04:55Some people come in and think it's including my children.
04:59Thinks it's old stuff.
05:03But to me, it's peaceful.
05:06Who's in this picture?
05:08Who's that fancy lady?
05:10Some young gal.
05:13That was an anniversary we were celebrating.
05:16Well, it looks like this is Christmas.
05:18It looks like Christmas in the 90s.
05:19Oh, yeah.
05:20Yes.
05:21This is Kathy, the oldest daughter.
05:24Okay.
05:25And Shirley, the middle.
05:26And then there's Nancy.
05:27There's Nancy.
05:28And there's Big J and Honey.
05:30You.
05:31Yes.
05:32I almost feel like the other character in every single one of these pictures is that fireplace
05:36brick.
05:37Yeah.
05:38Almost everything.
05:39Everything.
05:40That's amazing.
05:41Well, at least we understand where you guys gathered.
05:43That was a good place to sit and take pictures.
05:46Yeah, absolutely.
05:47I couldn't help but notice that slot machine.
05:49Yeah, that came from my mother.
05:51Does this work?
05:52It works.
05:53Growing up, we would always play it.
05:54All the kids, you get a nickel, you put it in.
05:56You know, it's supposed to pay out if you win.
05:58And it never did.
05:59Ah.
06:00And so we think that Honey has rigged the machine.
06:03Honey.
06:04Honey has never, never, never rigged the machine.
06:08Well, can I try it?
06:09Sure.
06:10And see if it works maybe for me?
06:11See if it works.
06:12Okay.
06:13She's gonna get your money too.
06:14Okay.
06:15And I put it in.
06:16Pull the handle.
06:18Oh, that is hefty.
06:19Oh.
06:20She got your nickel too.
06:21I got my nickel.
06:23It's not, it's not a winning.
06:25Let's see if have luck on my hat.
06:26Push it back.
06:27Push it all the way up.
06:28Yep.
06:29That's a winner.
06:32Oh, I got money!
06:35It works.
06:36You fixed it for them.
06:38Great.
06:39Wow.
06:40Oh, I'm so glad it paid.
06:42Making it rain.
06:44What's behind those doors?
06:47When we were building the house, they came to me and they said, would you like a coat closet
06:52or a bar?
06:53And I said, let them put their coats on my bed.
06:57I want a bar.
07:00So we have a bar.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Look at that.
07:05And that opens up.
07:06And then this opens up.
07:07Yeah.
07:08Okay.
07:09So we can start serving.
07:10Okay, who's the bartender?
07:12Wow.
07:13All right.
07:14How often do you have these doors open or is it usually kind of closed up like this?
07:17It's closed like that.
07:18Okay.
07:19Unless I have a party or something.
07:21And then I open it up and they say, oh, what do you have there?
07:26Okay.
07:27That's so much fun.
07:28That is so much character.
07:30My eye is drawn to...
07:31That dining room.
07:32Yeah.
07:33This is where the Thanksgiving action happens.
07:36Well, I see you're keeping the 1970s kind of theme going inside here.
07:41How much time do you spend at this dining room table?
07:43Not an awful lot.
07:44Not an awful lot.
07:45No.
07:46Well, it doesn't look like you have adequate seating for the amount of family members that
07:49you have.
07:50Well, we do have two more chairs.
07:52Uh-huh.
07:53I was just going to ask you, are you the kind of family that all finds their way around
07:55one table or do you often take your plates and find spaces around?
07:58We do that, but we also put a table here and extend it.
08:02I mean, we've had it extended out to here.
08:05And then maybe the kids' table is way over there.
08:07And then another table over there.
08:09We talked about hosting events a lot in this house.
08:13Uh-huh.
08:14Is there any upcoming events that you have?
08:16I recently got engaged.
08:19What?
08:20That's beautiful.
08:22Congratulations.
08:23Congratulations.
08:24So I would love to have a bridal shower here, especially in a new space that's not 70s themed.
08:30Oh.
08:31That's right.
08:32It'll be a brand new space.
08:33Maybe there will be a baby shower after that.
08:35Oh, you sound like everybody's mother now.
08:37Exactly.
08:38One step at a time.
08:39You guys have a lot of fun together.
08:41We do.
08:42Always going back.
08:43We pick at one another.
08:44Do you all play certain roles in that sort of relationship?
08:47We're all the boss.
08:48You're all the boss.
08:49That's for sure.
08:50That's where the problem lies.
08:51Yeah.
08:52Yeah.
08:53I was going to ask who's the spiciest, but I think I already know.
08:56Definitely.
08:57The lady in red.
08:58Mm.
08:59Oh.
09:00You don't think so?
09:01I don't think so.
09:02I don't know.
09:03I see some disagreement behind.
09:05She's spicy.
09:06I mean, we butt heads all the time.
09:08We butt heads.
09:09You are, too.
09:10We butt heads.
09:11So there's a lot of butting heads here.
09:12Yeah, we do.
09:13We go at it.
09:15Well, so that's going to be our challenge, is trying to get a sense of what it is everybody
09:20needs and how everybody's needs are all kind of different.
09:22What's been your biggest challenge with changing the decor as the decades have moved on?
09:27Oh, I don't know.
09:29It was just overwhelming.
09:31My style in my house is sort of monochromatic, but it is peaceful and soft to me.
09:41I like the layout in the house.
09:44We need Luke and Olivia's help here because I'm not a design person.
09:51And I'm stuck in the 70s, I think.
09:55And so we need someone else's opinion besides mine and theirs.
10:01We probably also need a referee for the three of us because we're not going to agree.
10:07So my biggest fear of the house being renovated is someone else is coming in and putting a
10:17lot of their ideas.
10:19How am I going to accept that and how that's going to change the feelings I have for a house
10:26which I dearly love?
10:28I was the one that wanted to reach out to Luke and Olivia for their help.
10:31And I feel a lot of pressure because if Honey doesn't like it, then I don't think she's
10:36going to like me very much.
10:38I come after you.
10:39I'm a little nervous.
10:40This is the moment when we kick you out of your own house.
10:43Yes.
10:44Yes.
10:45Yes.
10:46I'll help you out.
10:47Okay.
10:55This renovation means a lot to all of us, especially me.
11:00Because I've been here for so long and it's been the same thing for so long.
11:07Oh, yeah.
11:09I was really excited to see how excited they were to even look at our family pictures.
11:13Let's put it over there.
11:14That they are putting themselves into our family to be able to have the vision that we
11:19have, which is to bring everybody together and let us continue to make memories.
11:23I'm just a little concerned that some of the original charm and personal touches that my mom
11:29and dad put in this house will be erased.
11:31So we kind of want to hold on to some of that.
11:34I think I'm more excited to see the changes.
11:38There you go.
11:39Excited and nervous.
11:41Nervous, for sure.
11:42I'm most concerned of losing control.
11:45Olivia, I was so excited to come to this house because it is the first time we've worked
11:59on a project where the house is sitting on a lake.
12:01I know.
12:02It's beautiful.
12:03It literally has this incredible view.
12:05But when I went into the house for the first time, it didn't really have a conversation
12:09with the lake.
12:10It kind of felt like a house in the 70s.
12:12It is a house from the 70s.
12:13It is a house from the 70s.
12:14That hasn't been touched since.
12:16Yeah.
12:17So we have three different generation of women.
12:19They've all kind of grown up here, along with our extra large extended family, some of
12:23whom are deaf.
12:24So right now, Honey's home is a bit out of date.
12:27So we need to create a fresh, cohesive space for everyone, so that they'll all want to
12:32come back in the years to come.
12:34So we're going to focus on the family room and the dining room.
12:37I don't know how I'm going to be able to make all of them happy.
12:41So we're in the family room.
12:42There's two very 1970s things that are happening in this space.
12:46It's that cedar planking.
12:47How does painting the cedar walls make you feel?
12:50You know, it actually makes me feel okay.
12:52Does it?
12:53It really does.
12:54I think a paint would actually really go a long way to change the space.
12:56It would really transform that room.
12:58Mm-hmm.
12:59The other really 1970s feature in that room is that stone or faux stone hearth.
13:04It's not just the hearth, it's the entire wall.
13:06And we saw all those pictures of them sitting in front of that over all the years.
13:10So it's definitely a focal point.
13:12My objective is to lighten up that fireplace.
13:14Gotcha.
13:15It's so visually heavy.
13:16Yeah, it doesn't feel like it gets the sunlight, doesn't get the brightness it deserves.
13:19With that in mind, I want to use the opening in the stone wall to display some of Honey's
13:24amazing knickknacks.
13:25And instead of hiding the bar in the cupboard, I want to show it off, brighten up the space.
13:30It's very clear that this family needs so much more seating.
13:33So we'll add a lot of new furniture, pulling all the blues and greens and earth tones from
13:38that gorgeous lake.
13:39And the layout of this furniture, it needs to be open and inclusive so everyone can see
13:43each other and communicate better.
13:45Plus, I'd really love to put a bench near the fireplace with some special seating for all the kids and grandkids.
13:50That all sounds great.
13:51I have one last thing for the family room.
13:54We had so much fun with that slot machine.
13:56I love the slot machine.
13:57No matter what we do, we've got to give it a place of prominence somewhere in this room.
14:02For sure.
14:03Honey has to keep stealing money from the grandkids.
14:04That's right.
14:05She's got her racket.
14:06It can't go anywhere.
14:07Yeah.
14:08Do you want to talk about the dining room?
14:09I think we need to treat this space very similarly because you can see the two together.
14:14Mm-hmm.
14:15The original hardwood floors can stay, but everything else is dated and it has to go.
14:19I'm thinking of a bigger dining table with much more seating so the whole family can sit together comfortably.
14:25And we can add a fun rug for a pop of color.
14:28And I would love to replace that light fixture with something more modern.
14:31And the walls definitely need a fresh coat of paint.
14:34Part of what makes design fun for us is doing things that connect exactly to their feelings and who they are.
14:39So whatever we put up on the walls, it's got to have meaning for them.
14:42I agree.
14:43That gives you a lot of opportunity to do some sort of woodworking project perhaps?
14:47Mm-hmm.
14:48Okay.
14:49Bringing the lake inside.
14:50We're making it a little fresher.
14:51Yeah.
14:52A little bit more connected to the outdoors.
14:53But I really want to talk to the ladies.
14:55Get a little bit more information about what they're into, what they like, and what their tastes are.
14:59I don't think Honey's going to have any problem telling us what she wants.
15:02I definitely need to hear more from them.
15:04I have an idea about what I want, but what they want, that's a whole other story.
15:07That's always the balance, right?
15:08That's right.
15:14This house is our toughest project yet.
15:16Nancy and Lauren want to see some much-needed updates to the house, but it is still Honey's home.
15:21And she is really reluctant to change.
15:23We only have a few days to get this renovation done, so Olivia and I have to get the three generations together again.
15:28We can see there is still disagreement between them, and we are desperate to find common ground.
15:33It's time to put pen to paper.
15:34It is the only way we are going to get this design just right.
15:38Alright, well thank you so much for coming back.
15:41Great.
15:42Olivia and I wanted to meet up with you again because we want to get more information about this design.
15:48We care a lot about making all three of you happy, even though you all have different opinions about everything.
15:54We have to find things that you can agree on.
15:56And the more we understand about each of you, your memories, your hopes, your dreams, the more it will inspire what ultimately we're going to do to the space to make it feel like somewhere you want to continue to spend the next 50 years of your life.
16:08Oh, I don't think I have 50 more.
16:13I set you up for that.
16:15Oh, Lauren.
16:16Each of you will get a notebook.
16:17One for Lauren.
16:19One for Nancy.
16:20You look apprehensive.
16:21Nancy's like, what's happening here?
16:24One for Honey.
16:26And we are going to ask you a few questions.
16:28Okay.
16:29We want you to write your answer in the notebook.
16:31Okay.
16:32You cannot show each other your answer.
16:33You have to keep it secret.
16:34Oh, lots of secrets.
16:36That's right.
16:37Now we want you to write down your honest thoughts.
16:40And this is a no judgment zone.
16:41And this is going to help us with our design plans.
16:44Okay.
16:45I would love to know each of your favorite color that you would like to see come back into the house.
16:51What adjectives would you use to describe how you want the space to feel?
16:56In this decade.
16:57In this decade.
16:58Maybe.
16:59Write it down.
17:01What is one thing you would like to see in the new space?
17:06That could be anything.
17:07Write it all down.
17:09There's never too much information.
17:11Let's see.
17:12I can't wait to read these.
17:13We all have slightly different tastes and slightly different ideas of what we hope it looks like.
17:21But I think Luke and Olivia coming in with their expertise and their skills, they will kind of incorporate all of our ideas and make a change that will be good for all of us.
17:30All right, students, hand in your notebooks.
17:33And thank you very much for taking the time to do this.
17:36So good to see you again, ladies.
17:37Okay.
17:38Thank you so much.
17:39It'll be a different house when you come back.
17:40I got it.
17:41I love you.
17:42Bye, honey.
17:43Bye, Luke.
17:44Our meeting with Honey, Nancy, and Lauren was definitely time well spent.
17:47The honest answers they wrote down for us in their notebooks have given Olivia and I a much clearer direction on how to move forward with their design.
17:54Well, that was really interesting, and that was very informative.
17:57I'm excited for them and what this means for their future generations to come.
18:01Absolutely, because I think this house is probably going to be around for a long time.
18:03I have that feeling, too.
18:05And now we've got to get to work.
18:09The notebooks revealed that all three ladies want a more modern feel to the house.
18:13So we've decided to paint the cedar paneling and walls a really pretty soft blue.
18:17Now, listen, it's a big risk, but it'll give them the fresh, bold change that they all ask for.
18:22I also have a lot to think about with this fireplace.
18:24I mean, it's in desperate need of a makeover.
18:26I really want to preserve the organic feel since we're right by the lake.
18:30But I'm concerned that between the new blue paint on the walls and the more modern fireplace, that it'll just be too much of a drastic change for honey.
18:41While the house is getting painted, I can start my woodworking project.
18:44After meeting at the lake, Nancy told me about an old cedar chest that had been gathering dust in the garage for decades.
18:50I love an opportunity to repurpose something old and build something new with it.
18:55It's a beautiful piece, I don't know, maybe 1930s, an old cedar closet.
19:02And she said that we could do what we want with it.
19:05So I was thinking about the bar.
19:07You know how important that bar was to honey?
19:09She had to choose whether or not she was going to have a closet or a bar.
19:12And she definitely wanted a bar.
19:13So we can maybe use some of the cedar to kind of dress it up a bit and call back to the cedar that used to be on all the walls in the main space.
19:19Yeah, I like it.
19:20Now we just have to be careful taking this apart because cedar is soft.
19:23It is.
19:24And this wood is old and dry.
19:25I think if we can just pop this top piece right off and try our best to not damage this soft wood.
19:32It's always bittersweet taking apart somebody else's work.
19:35But the truth was, this was just gathering dust.
19:38And I believe that the wood still has a whole new life in it.
19:43See, even that we can bang out those nails.
19:45There's something there we could do with that.
19:47Not sure yet.
19:48Our question is whether or not it looks like the outside was finished.
19:52The inside is kind of this beautiful unfinished.
19:57Sometimes the creative process is a bit of a mystery.
20:00And just taking something apart might be exactly the thing you need to do to wait for inspiration to strike.
20:08So, you know, right off the bat, you take a look.
20:10We might be able to just use these panels as they are to sort of panel the back of the bar.
20:15Kind of give it that old warm kind of feeling.
20:17Yeah, I like that.
20:19So we'll fit these panels to mount on the back of Honey's bar.
20:22Not sure whether I prefer the inside or the finished side yet.
20:25But either way, I'm excited to add warmth and texture to the bar.
20:29And with the leftover wood, I'm going to give it a fun personal touch.
20:34A custom bar sign.
20:35So I think most importantly, we just try to preserve these panels as intact as much as possible.
20:46Look at that.
20:47And then we just got to decide how we're going to finish this.
20:52Look at the other side.
20:54Is that more appealing?
20:56I mean, it helps us with the straight edge.
20:59The only thing I don't love about that is the nail holes.
21:02And it looks like they picked their nicer boards for the front.
21:04We've got some knots here.
21:06Definitely more rustic.
21:07My impression of Honey is she kind of likes things kind of neat and tidy.
21:10I think so too.
21:11Yeah.
21:12Hmm.
21:13All right.
21:14Stuff to think about.
21:15Great.
21:16You like it?
21:29I know you were nervous about it.
21:32I was because it's blue.
21:34It doesn't actually feel like as much blue as I thought it was going to be.
21:38It doesn't.
21:39And you know why?
21:40This floor really grounds it.
21:41It was the right choice.
21:42I love that we went darker and didn't try to match this floor.
21:45Yep.
21:46Floor.
21:48Do you think they'll love it?
21:58Do you think they'll love it?
22:00It's that honey I'm worried about.
22:02She's sweet, but she got a little sting to her too.
22:04Yes, she does.
22:06I love it.
22:07Oh, I'm so happy you do.
22:08And I love that the texture of the wood shines through too.
22:10Yeah.
22:11I like that.
22:12This is pretty.
22:13Mm-hmm.
22:14I like a different blue though.
22:15Is it the same blue?
22:16Is that just?
22:17I think it's just the way the light is reacting to it as we know.
22:19Isn't that crazy?
22:20Yeah.
22:21Also the texture on this kind of gives it a different feel too.
22:23Yeah.
22:24It looks a little bit different.
22:25It looks a little bit more purple.
22:27Yeah, I'm sad to see the ceiling was painted blue as well.
22:30And I'm not sure how honey is going to react to that.
22:32I know.
22:33I think we should talk to the painters about possibly taking it back white.
22:36Can I also point something else out?
22:38What?
22:39Your jumper kind of blends in with the walls.
22:41Oh, do I?
22:43Can you see me?
22:44You just disappeared.
22:49As the inside of the house takes shape, I want to honor the family's legacy here by the lake, as well as the state of Georgia.
22:57So I've come up with the simple idea to add a bit of character to the dining room walls.
23:01Hey, hey.
23:02Hey, Olivia.
23:03What are you doing?
23:04Well, can you tell what I've made here?
23:07It looks like a jigsaw puzzle.
23:08It looks like a jigsaw puzzle, specifically a puzzle piece of Great State of Georgia.
23:13Yeah, that's it.
23:14Well, this was the idea of a guest book and an art piece.
23:18We put this up on the wall somewhere and people can sign their name on it somewhere.
23:23I like that idea.
23:24Yeah.
23:25It's like carving your name into a tree trunk kind of thing.
23:27Yeah.
23:28I mean, I would love to see this filled with a bunch of names.
23:30I think it will be, given all the generations that they have now and more to come.
23:34All the gatherings they've had here over the years.
23:36Yeah.
23:37Now, are you thinking about cutting the whole thing out or is this the whole piece itself?
23:43We could hang it on the wall sort of like that.
23:45I mean, we want people to know what it is when they come in, right?
23:48Right.
23:49And we're not writing Georgia anywhere or carving Georgia anywhere on this piece, right?
23:55I don't think I want to put Georgia on it.
23:57It makes it a little literal, but I thought it might be kind of cute if we put approximately
24:02where the lake is, make it a heart.
24:04Aw.
24:05Yeah.
24:06A heart.
24:07A heart.
24:08That's where the family is, right?
24:09That's sweet.
24:10In this little corner of Georgia.
24:11I like that.
24:12Now, we need to figure out if it's going to be cut out or on the board, right?
24:14Mm-hmm.
24:15My first thought is cut it out.
24:16Me too.
24:17I think it's cool.
24:18How are you going to install it?
24:20I'm going to use like a French cleat so it's easy to take off the wall, but it's also sturdy
24:24enough that if you bump it, it's not going to sort of slip around.
24:27So that'll give it some dimension too then, right?
24:29It won't be flat on the wall.
24:31Yeah, probably off the wall, maybe three quarters of an inch.
24:33All right.
24:34Another thing to think about is I want to paint it.
24:37In my mind, I was envisioning stain that it could be nice to bring back some of that cedar
24:44finish that we took away in the living room, family room den.
24:48Well, we can always do a little sample and see what it looks like.
24:50Okay.
24:51I got a couple stains here and I'll use it on some scrap wood.
24:54Perfect.
24:55I'll come back in a little bit.
24:56All right.
24:57I'm going to cut this out.
25:04I'm using my jigsaw to cut out the rough outline and then a router to clean up the edges.
25:15It'll get sanded and stained.
25:18I just hope this becomes a centerpiece of gatherings on the lake for years to come.
25:33With the house, we still have to figure out what to do with this fireplace.
25:36I kind of want to keep this opening.
25:38Uh-huh.
25:39So the idea is we create some sort of a useful space here, but I don't really know what that
25:44space is.
25:45I mean, what could we possibly need it for?
25:47Any ideas?
25:48It's sort of small for a bookshelf.
25:50Yes.
25:51Like the location of it, the size of it is weird.
25:54And very, very deep.
25:55I have a thought.
25:56Yes?
25:57What if we showcase the slot machine right there?
26:00Oh.
26:01I think that'd be great.
26:03I think it's a perfect place to highlight it.
26:05Yeah.
26:06What if we encased it?
26:07Could we make that space a little less deep?
26:09Yeah, absolutely.
26:10I think the slot machine was something like 18 inches.
26:13So that's definitely good on the wind.
26:14Oh, that's perfect.
26:15Yeah.
26:16Almost as if it was created for it.
26:17I was going to say the same thing.
26:18It's like it's built for it.
26:19That'll be a nice surprise for them.
26:20Yeah, totally.
26:21I like it.
26:22Except for Lauren.
26:23I don't think Lauren will appreciate it.
26:24I think she will.
26:25How much fun was it to just pull that handle down?
26:27It was fun for us, but not for her.
26:37Construction continues on the refresh of the fireplace.
26:43We only have a couple days left before giving the house back to Honey and her family.
26:47What are you doing?
26:48Well, hey.
26:49Hey.
26:50What are you doing?
26:51Wait a minute.
26:52Mm-hmm.
26:53As I'm leaning into the bar, I'm realizing there's no doors.
26:57Well, we took the doors off mainly just to kind of get the process going.
27:01But now I'm kind of thinking I want to keep them off.
27:03Oh.
27:04And it makes me nervous because Honey likes things a certain way and this has always been closed.
27:09So I hope that she's open to the idea that the bar is kind of going to be open to the room.
27:13I don't know.
27:14That might be a tough sell.
27:15I know.
27:16We're giving her a lot of change.
27:17I hope she's open to that change.
27:18I'm pushing her with this paint color all over the ceilings and the walls.
27:22And you're pushing her with taking off her doors.
27:29I'm pushing her with this paint color all over the ceilings and the walls.
27:33And you're pushing her with taking off her doors.
27:35Well, here's the thing.
27:36We'll keep the doors.
27:37If she doesn't like it, she can put them back up.
27:38Well, that's true, too.
27:39And then paint them blue.
27:40And then paint them blue.
27:41Yeah.
27:42Well, I'm glad you're here because maybe you can talk it through with me.
27:45Okay.
27:46Here's the thing again.
27:47We painted over the cedar.
27:49And I know the cedar was a big part of the character of this place.
27:51So Nancy had that old cedar closet and we carefully disassembled it.
27:58And I think there's a way to add some cedar back into the bar.
28:03That fits perfectly.
28:05Yeah, we got really lucky with that.
28:07That's amazing.
28:08It adds such character back here, too.
28:09I love it.
28:10I think so.
28:11Yeah.
28:12It also kind of got like an old world sort of vibe to it.
28:15Where I really need your help, I think we can do better than this paper.
28:19Yeah, that's so 80s.
28:20I can definitely help with sourcing something different.
28:23But we have other things in here that need to change, too.
28:25What about that linoleum on the floor?
28:26Well, we have enough flooring from the den, living room, family room combo.
28:30There we go.
28:31To use here in the bar.
28:32That's great.
28:33Because then it ties the two rooms together.
28:35Yep.
28:36It's a nice clean floor.
28:37It feels like a lake house, like a lake bar.
28:39Like a lake bar.
28:40Honey's lake bar.
28:41Honey's bar.
28:42Oh.
28:43Oh.
28:44Honey's.
28:45Honey's.
28:46Honey's.
28:47Maybe I can do something about that.
28:48I think we should.
28:49Yeah.
28:50Since this now is a feature, we're making it a focal point of the space.
28:53We are saying your bar doesn't need to be a closet anymore.
28:56It can be a full on bar.
28:57I like that.
29:02Operation Modernize Honey's Lake House is coming together in a big way.
29:06We're filling in the open spaces in the fireplace with some new stone.
29:09And Olivia has finally made a decision on how to freshen up the family focal point.
29:14Oh, Olivia, it's happening.
29:16We're lightening the wall.
29:17We are lightening the stone that all of them wanted to change.
29:21There was a lot of opinions, a lot of feelings about this, so.
29:24There was.
29:25They wrote about it in their book.
29:26Uh-huh.
29:27And so here's the change.
29:28We're changing it.
29:29Yeah.
29:30I thought I would give this technique a try.
29:32OK.
29:33It's a little less messy.
29:34OK.
29:35It's a paint dry brush technique to get a textured, distressed look.
29:38I see.
29:39I don't want it to look like somebody just came and lathered it with paint.
29:42Exactly.
29:43We're not trying to cover up the fact that it's stone.
29:44Right.
29:45We still want to give it character.
29:46So this is just a little test square that he's marked out?
29:48This is just a little test square.
29:49We want to see how it works out there before we commit to the whole wall.
29:52Gotcha.
29:53Feel such pressure to get this right because this is the focal point of all of their family
29:58portraits.
29:59Yeah.
30:00And so if we mess it up.
30:01Yeah.
30:02All of their family portraits are going to have that in the background.
30:04That's so true.
30:05This room is going to look completely.
30:06It's going to be very different.
30:07They won't know where they are.
30:08I know.
30:09All right.
30:10Well, I think it's going to take him a while.
30:11Yeah.
30:12All right.
30:13We'll get out of here.
30:14Thank you, Rolando.
30:15We won't stare at you.
30:16It's like having people watch you work.
30:19While the stone gets a glow up, Olivia wants my thoughts on another unique project for
30:24the family.
30:25So tell us what the idea is with these, Olivia.
30:27Well, remember when we were down at the lake and we did that exercise with Honey, Nancy,
30:32and Lauren?
30:33And all three of them said they love that this home is on the lake.
30:35So we wanted to give them some sort of art installation to honor the family and honor their love for
30:41living on the lake.
30:42And I have these paddles here with this really cool design with all of our colors and thought
30:46it would be fun to put their names on it.
30:48So there'll be one for Honey, one for Nancy and her sisters, and the grandkids as Luke is rowing his boat.
30:54I'm paddling my canoe.
30:57I think that's what's happening.
30:58We don't have the names on them yet because we want to decide the placement.
31:03Do you think it would be kind of like one, two, and then one, two?
31:09Do we flip them this way as well?
31:11Oh, that's a nice idea, yeah.
31:12Just to mix it up because otherwise you'll have a bunch of tall sticks going in one direction.
31:16I agree.
31:17Do you want to see where they look up higher on the wall?
31:18Sure.
31:19I actually like that.
31:24Yeah, that's a nice idea actually.
31:26Got it.
31:27Just going to row myself on out.
31:28Row, row, row your boat.
31:29Let's go find some string.
31:30Gently down the string.
31:32Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
31:41It's hard to get work down here with that beautiful view of the lake, right?
31:43I know.
31:44Get some fresh air too.
31:45We got stuff to do.
31:46Uh-huh.
31:47So I just want to go over this place real quick.
31:48Okay.
31:49Those light fixtures are big.
31:51They are.
31:52And we still have to get them installed up on the ceiling.
31:54I really want your opinion on how high they should be.
31:56Okay.
31:57How are you feeling about the furniture layout?
31:59We had a lot of pieces that we had to play around with, but I think we have a layout that'll make everybody happy.
32:04Perfect.
32:05Uh, we got to finish that bar build.
32:06There's a lot of little details to get done in there.
32:08It's, you know, those small little spaces, they're tricky.
32:10Let's just do two shelves.
32:11All right.
32:12It'll be worthy of Honey's Bar.
32:14That reminds me, we've got to get that sign up.
32:16The ceiling in the dining room.
32:18That got painted.
32:19Ooh.
32:20Yes.
32:21It was way too blue before.
32:22You remember everything was blue, the walls, the trim, everything.
32:25So the ceiling got a new fresh coat of paint on it.
32:27Great.
32:28And it looks much better.
32:29Slot machine and it's sort of special little nook.
32:33You still have some final touches on that.
32:35No.
32:36Fireplace looks fantastic.
32:38Fireplace looks great.
32:39That's quite the transformation.
32:40Really, really a transformation.
32:41Yeah.
32:42It'll be the perfect new backdrop for all their Christmas photos now.
32:45Totally.
32:46I hope.
32:47We still don't know.
32:48We still don't know.
32:49What we do know is Honey is not going to hold back her opinions.
32:52She will not.
32:53And so I'm bracing myself and excited all at the same time.
32:56Me too.
32:57I'm a ball of nerves.
32:58What can I say?
32:59Me too.
33:00The thing I'm most excited about is to see my mother's reaction to all of this.
33:17At the same time, I'm very nervous about that.
33:20Welcome home.
33:21Hi.
33:22Okay, we're going to try to cover your eyes until the very last moment.
33:25I have to cover her eyes.
33:26Okay.
33:27I have no earthly idea what to expect in my home.
33:34Definitely nervous about Honey's reaction.
33:36I just wonder if she's going to still be happy.
33:38I hope so.
33:39That's the biggest worry.
33:41Okay, a little bit closer.
33:44And I think we're good.
33:45You guys can open your eyes.
33:47Oh!
33:48Oh!
33:49Look at that!
33:50Oh, my gosh!
33:51Oh!
33:54Look at that!
33:55Oh, look over here!
33:56I love it!
33:57I love it!
33:58I love it!
33:59This is amazing!
34:00Oh!
34:01Wow!
34:02Oh!
34:04But it's so different and so pretty and fantastic.
34:09I never would have pictured blue.
34:11No.
34:12This is great!
34:13I love it!
34:14I love the color.
34:15That looks so good!
34:16This is great!
34:17Wow!
34:18Wow!
34:19Wow!
34:20Wow!
34:21Wow!
34:22Wow!
34:23This is amazing!
34:24You have plenty of seating now.
34:26Remember you told us you lacked enough seating?
34:27Yeah!
34:28Yeah!
34:29So you hold you up?
34:30And everybody can see everybody.
34:32The most important thing we wanted to give you was a much more inclusive seating arrangement.
34:37So now when your family's all together, they can see each other's faces when they're in the same space together.
34:42The blinds.
34:43Vertical blinds are gone!
34:44Woo!
34:45Yay!
34:46But you can still, you wanted something that you could still see the lake and the light.
34:49I can still see!
34:50And those are perfect.
34:51Yes!
34:52Even if they're down, I can see.
34:53I mean, that's the artwork right there.
34:54Yes!
34:55The view is your masterpiece in this space.
34:57Yes!
34:58And we pulled all the colors from the lake into the space.
35:01Yes!
35:02We have some blue from the lake.
35:03We have green from the trees.
35:04Oh, this is unreal.
35:06But we did keep some of the cedar around the windows.
35:09Right, yeah.
35:10We still have some of that original cedar there.
35:11Oh, yes!
35:12Up top, too.
35:13All the way up here, there's some of that original cedar there.
35:15Look at the chandeliers!
35:17I love them!
35:18Oh!
35:19Amazing!
35:20That's fantastic!
35:22I'm ecstatic that you're happy.
35:24We were so nervous.
35:25We were really nervous.
35:26We didn't think.
35:27I was like, what if she hates it?
35:28She'll tell us for sure.
35:29I would!
35:30I'd say, oh my God, look what they did!
35:33No!
35:34You've been in this space for a really long time.
35:36Yes!
35:37And you have...
35:38A long time.
35:39A long time.
35:40So you have like an idea of where you like things.
35:41You probably have a routine.
35:42I, you know, I was, I was thinking about that constantly.
35:44Because when a renovation happens when you're not there...
35:47Yeah!
35:48You just have to adapt to what, what is there, so...
35:51But it's fantastic.
35:53This is cozy.
35:54Oh!
35:55Yeah, test it out!
35:56This is nice!
35:57And I can't test it out!
35:58I'm just looking at everything.
36:00I can't sit down.
36:01You've got the trendiest house of all of us.
36:03I know!
36:04Well, I'm glad you like my house.
36:06I know!
36:07I'm coming to live here.
36:08What went away were all those great colors.
36:11Yes!
36:12Yes!
36:13Do you remember that?
36:14Pretty!
36:15Unreal!
36:16Oh!
36:17Ah!
36:18The slot machine?
36:19Yes!
36:20It probably is still rigged.
36:21Well, let's...
36:22But...
36:23I love the oars.
36:24I know!
36:25I do too!
36:26But these ones are extra special because if you look closely, we've got some family names
36:27on all of them.
36:28Yeah!
36:29Oh, really?
36:30Unbelievable!
36:31Well, as the family grows, we left you a couple sort of blank ones here, so you can add them
36:47to the wall.
36:48For the babies!
36:49Yeah!
36:50I saw it coming.
36:51Yeah!
36:52We set that up.
36:53I'm sorry.
36:54Honey!
36:55I see honey!
36:56Look!
36:57Honey!
36:58So cute!
36:59And the doors disappeared.
37:04You just sort of decided that they didn't need to be there.
37:07I hope that's okay.
37:08We named it Honey's.
37:09It's your own little bar now.
37:10It's cool!
37:11You can just saddle on up to the bar.
37:14I keep seeing different things.
37:17Nancy told us about this old cedar chest.
37:20We were so conflicted about painting all this cedar on the walls, but we used that old
37:25cedar chest and we created a little bit of paneling at the back.
37:27Oh!
37:28Oh, that's the cedar chest.
37:29I see what you're saying now.
37:30That looks so good!
37:32Wow!
37:33Aw!
37:34It's a really special space.
37:37I do feel like you kind of feel that energy when you're in here of all the laughter,
37:41all the experiences, all the things that wouldn't happen.
37:43Yes!
37:44We can't call this the 70s show anymore.
37:46No!
37:47Oh, no!
37:48You have to find something else to pick on.
37:51You are the trendiest somebody else.
37:53Yes, you are.
37:54It is a lake house, but it's not rustic.
37:56It's still, like, chic and cool and contemporary.
37:59I love this.
38:00This is...
38:01I would have never pictured it like this.
38:03This is beautiful.
38:05Let's head on into the dining room.
38:07Okay, let's go see.
38:09Wow!
38:10Wow!
38:11Oh, my gosh!
38:12Look at this!
38:14Oh, my God!
38:15It's so different!
38:17Wow!
38:18Look at so many chairs!
38:20Gosh!
38:21So there's more seating now for all of you than there was before.
38:24Yes!
38:25We did a little mix and match on the chairs to make it more playful.
38:29I like that.
38:30Yeah, I like that.
38:31That they're different.
38:32I love that.
38:33I love that chair.
38:34That chair is so unusual.
38:36Oh, this is so pretty.
38:38So much brighter than it was.
38:40Homey and welcoming.
38:41I love it.
38:42What we kept in this space was the floor.
38:46Yes.
38:47What we changed in this space was everything else.
38:52And what we love, too, is that there is a complete sight line from the dining room down
38:57to the den, family room, living room.
39:01Living room.
39:02Just like the college.
39:03So if you're sitting in here, you can see everybody in there.
39:06Yes.
39:07We know that was really important for you.
39:09This is something else.
39:10I never would have imagined this.
39:12Yes.
39:13Nancy, you said welcoming.
39:14So this here behind us is the state of Georgia cut out.
39:19But we also kind of thought about this piece as an opportunity for people to sign a guest book.
39:26And over the years, the entire board will get filled up with all kinds of names.
39:30Wow.
39:31I love that.
39:32That's neat.
39:33So would Olivia and I be able to sign your guest book?
39:37Yes.
39:38Please do.
39:40What happens if I said no?
39:42Well, then I would just say, well, that's fine.
39:44It's yours.
39:45You can do whatever you want with it.
39:46It wouldn't have surprised us.
39:48Let me say that I would have been like, well, honey has spoken.
39:54Whoa.
39:55Now that's an autograph.
39:56Okay, fancy.
39:57Do you envision Thanksgiving's here?
40:00Your family gatherings here?
40:01Oh, yes.
40:02Look at that.
40:03Yeah, we got to fill this up.
40:04I don't think that would be hard for y'all at all.
40:06No.
40:07Luke and Olivia coming in here to put the heart back in our home, you could see their hearts
40:14were 100% in this.
40:16Everybody say fresh new start.
40:17Fresh new start.
40:18Fresh new start.
40:19Oh, thank you guys.
40:22They had such an eye for what needed to be changed, and they really did a good job of
40:27capturing how close our family is and what we use this space for, which is to be together.
40:31This just being our home base, it's a place where you can come and you feel loved.
40:35So just thankful for this experience to be able to bring that back into our home so we
40:40can continue to spend time together for years to come.
40:43Really looking forward to 50 more years of this house and 50 more years of memories with
40:48our family.
40:49I'm very pleased and appreciative of what they did.
40:53I'm happy.
40:55Well, it's been an honor.
40:56So thank you so much for this opportunity.
40:58You're quite welcome.
41:00It's still my house.
41:03So I still have a voice here.
41:06The heart is here.
41:08The love is here.
41:11And everyone is welcome.
41:13Three different women, three different opinions.
41:16I think we're all happy.
41:18Can we agree on that, y'all?
41:20Yeah, we'll go along with that.
41:21We're gonna agree with it.
41:22Love it.
41:23Love it.
41:33Love it.
