This CCTV footage shows the moment a gas canister exploded at one of Cornwall’s recycling facilities.

In September alone, gas canisters, which are used with camping stoves and DIY products, caused four small fires at the Materials Recycling Facility in Bodmin.

Staff reacted quickly and extinguished the fires. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Cornwall Council and SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, which is contracted to manage Cornwall’s rubbish and recycling, is urging people to dispose of cannisters safely.

They can be taken to any of Cornwall’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs). They should not be put out for collection with rubbish or recycling.

00:00This year alone, I think there's been at least six incidents of baler fires involving gas
00:28cans which is a lot more than any other years since I've been here. You've just got to make sure that
00:35you're looking out for anything with the word gas in it. Anything gas doesn't go into your household
00:40stuff. It needs to be recycled separately. A lot of lighter fluids come through which can be easily
00:45mistaken for general aerosol. A lot of gas cans coming through which are a bit more identifiable
00:54but still slip through the net. We do have guys up on the picking line which do try their best to
01:00pick out as many as they can but obviously some do make it through. It's great that people are
01:06recycling more than ever in Cornwall. Rates are now up to 52 percent. That's just such good news but
01:13it's really important that we are recycling the right things in the right containers. So aerosols,
01:20whilst aerosols that don't contain gas can go into your curbside recycling, anything that contains
01:27gas or batteries, please could you put it into a specialist place and that could be a household
01:33waste and recycling centre or it could even be the shop you bought it from. The problem is that when
01:39something like this or this goes into the curbside recycling, it can actually explode at the recycling
01:48centre and that can damage machinery and most importantly most concerningly it can actually
01:53hurt people. So we don't want things like this that contain gas here going into the recycling.
