00:00I was proud of her. She was young, beautiful, smart. I don't think I met a soul that ever said
00:14anything bad about Ashley. And he was the fun one. Terry was selling that I'm going to take
00:21care of you and your baby. She would do anything for him. Maybe she didn't believe that it was
00:29controlling. But behind closed doors, that's your fact. Terry was keeping her in that cycle
00:36intentionally. Everything was red flags for me. Just in my gut. Knew it was bad news. You said
00:42somebody's chasing you with a gun? It still gives me nine years. I'm f***ing up, don't tell you.
00:5920-year-old Ashley Buck is on vacation with her son, her family, and partner, 36-year-old Terry
01:20Barlow. She was perfect. She was the best mom I've ever met. I don't think I met a soul
01:29that ever said anything bad about Ashley. She was the brains. She knew how to take care
01:36of things. And he was the fun one. Look at the camera. What are you doing? Terry always
01:45tried to make a joke. Always was the funny one. Always making everyone around him laugh
01:51on the outside. You're a goofball. She was in love with him, I guess. She would do anything
01:59for him. Ashley was born in Salina, Kansas, February 15, 1984. She was my second born.
02:13I can't say that I remember it. I was one when she was born. We were pretty much inseparable. She
02:20was my best friend. That's what she was to me. She was different than Amanda. She was more of a
02:26mama's crybaby. She would cry the first day of school up until fifth grade. And I'll never forget
02:33when I walked her into fifth grade and she didn't cry. I went, she's growing up finally.
02:40We were really young when our parents moved us to Texas.
02:45The family settles in Corrigan, Texas, and Ashley gains two brothers and a sister.
02:51I was number four. Ashley was eight years older than me. Out of all the siblings,
02:56she was the one I think played with me the most.
02:59We grew up rough. So we kind of bonded over, we're not going to let our childhood, I guess,
03:06bring us down.
03:06We used to pick on her all the time just to get her to be like, Mom, make them stop, you
03:21know.
03:26Turn it off.
03:28She was whiny. She was whiny.
03:30Mother.
03:31But we were her siblings, especially her little ones. So of course we had to go mess with her.
03:36All the time.
03:39She grew up a lot faster than I did. So I would say she was more mature than I was.
03:45Age 15, Ashley's life takes an unexpected turn.
03:50She met a guy and she became pregnant.
03:54I was worried she might even quit school, but the school put a daycare in.
03:59After giving birth to a baby son in 1999, Ashley continues her education, getting straight A's.
04:08She got a job. She worked. She went to school.
04:11She would actually walk from the school over to the gas station where she was working.
04:16And then she'd get off. She'd go home. She'd give the baby a bath. So she'd get up. She'd go to school and go do it all again.
04:23She was the best mom. She was super mom. I don't even know how she'd done it. She still graduated with honors.
04:31And in the summer of 2002, moves into her own apartment.
04:35It was a low-income apartment, but she was proud of it.
04:43Then one day, somebody called me asking, where's Ashley?
04:46Ashley. So I go across to her apartment, knock on the door.
04:50She's not there.
04:53She just packed up some clothes, packed up her son, and she was gone.
04:58It's like, poof, she's not here no more.
05:01I had no idea.
05:02I had no idea for months and months until she called me and said, I'm okay, mom.
05:09She was living down here in Beaumont with Terry.
05:12Ashley moves 85 miles south to live with 34-year-old trucker Terry Barlow.
05:20She was 17 when he met her.
05:24We were like, Ashley, he's almost old enough to be your dad. What are you doing?
05:29And she was like, it's fine. It's fine. It's not that big a deal.
05:33I felt like she was looking for somebody to take care of her,
05:37and he was telling that I'm going to take care of you and your baby.
05:42She probably did want a role model for her son on her own.
05:49It was probably scary.
05:51He could have given her a little security.
05:54What's up?
05:55Yeah, I win first.
05:56I won.
05:57I think Ashley was his little trophy.
06:01His young, pretty smart trophy.
06:05Terry always had this big camcorder.
06:13He liked to record everything.
06:16This is my house.
06:17It's the old crib.
06:20It's the inside of our house, man.
06:23It's all right.
06:24He was a truck driver.
06:27He was the breadwinner in the beginning,
06:29and Ashley was the one that stayed at home.
06:31So he did things to make a little bit of money.
06:37He liked to flaunt money, too.
06:40That's what this is awesome.
06:41Yeah.
06:42That mommy's going to take away
06:44as soon as we can figure out how to open the bag.
06:47Touchscreen.
06:49Eggs are everywhere.
06:51Just run.
06:52Just run and look.
06:53There's money everywhere.
06:55He'd be happy-go-lucky, joking, laughing, and everything.
06:58Most people just thought he was a, you know, a good guy.
07:01He's cool.
07:02You know, he's funny.
07:03He makes everybody laugh.
07:04He invites everybody over to parties.
07:07Look at this.
07:08I remember he had a very loud laugh.
07:11You could hear him from across the yard
07:13whenever he'd start laughing.
07:14I'm up.
07:15I'm telling you.
07:17They weren't like a huggy-lovey couple.
07:19They really weren't.
07:20They'd laugh and joke,
07:22and they'd have a good time together
07:23if Terry was in a good mood.
07:25But I don't remember ever seeing her kiss him.
07:27I don't remember ever seeing her hug him.
07:29It was a very, like, detached relationship.
07:33My sister did everything.
07:34My sister took care of the house,
07:35the cooking, the cleaning, everything.
07:39It wasn't long after she moved down there
07:41that she really started to put on the weight.
07:44Why not be the big baby?
07:46Because you thick, baby.
07:47You thick.
07:47Look at all that booty.
07:49Down here in the South, being thick,
07:51that's a good thing,
07:52or it may have been a good thing for him.
07:54I guess men like that.
07:57I'm not looking at my face.
08:00If he was filming, he was trying to,
08:02oh, you know, oh, this is mine.
08:05Shake that thing!
08:06I'm going to pump you up.
08:08Ooh!
08:09But behind closed doors is your fat.
08:12Come on.
08:13It's zooming on me.
08:14I'm already big enough.
08:17Oh, he would always think it was funny
08:19to joke about her weight.
08:20Some of those jokes I didn't care for.
08:23Now we're in and out into the next room.
08:27A treadmill we never use.
08:29She don't never use it.
08:30Your self-esteem is most definitely going to go down
08:34if the person, you know, you're supposed to love
08:36or what have you calls you fat.
08:38She wasn't the happy-go-lucky, giggly big sister
08:42that I remember.
08:43You could just tell she wasn't the same.
08:45She lost that spark.
08:47It wasn't until later that I found out
08:49that he had just gotten out of prison
08:51and I pretty much got with Ashley
08:54as soon as he got out of prison.
08:55Everything was red flags for me.
08:59Just always in my gut.
09:01You know, it was bad news.
09:14When you boys send it home
09:16in the rain
09:18and you want to get good and thirsty,
09:20guess what you do?
09:21Get up, get you any good meals.
09:23Go over here to the, to the fresh cooler right here.
09:27Let's get the cooler.
09:29Terry didn't drink constantly.
09:32No, pop one up.
09:33But if it was weekends or especially holidays,
09:38yes.
09:41Go, go, go, go.
09:42And he'd always put on a big show for everybody,
09:45buying all kinds of liquor and beer for everyone.
09:49Yeah, he always wanted to make the appearance
09:51that he was more than he was.
09:53Here they go.
09:54And then I found out later
09:55that he would do a lot of that,
09:57putting them in debt on credit cards
09:59so he could make everybody look like he was all that.
10:06You could tell whenever he'd get drunk
10:08that he'd get mean.
10:11First time I came down here and seen Ashley,
10:14there was a big black bruise on her arm.
10:16And I ran to her and I said,
10:19did he do this to you?
10:21And she said, oh no, mother, he did not.
10:24She tried to say she ran into a door or something.
10:27And I just knew better.
10:28It looked like somebody had punched her in the arm.
10:31She would just look off or she would change the subject.
10:35I mean, there was no talking about what went on between them.
10:39It's Christmas Day and Terry plays Santa.
10:47Get in there and get that blanket off of you
10:50and go open your present.
10:51You're sleepy.
10:53Lord, you should have been in bed last night.
10:55Get up.
10:55He would get more agitated.
10:57He'd start yelling and cussing.
11:00And, you know, just little things would set him off.
11:03Better life, girl.
11:04Better not cry.
11:05Better not be bad.
11:07I'm going to bust your ass.
11:10I couldn't even go in their house
11:11without getting a sick feeling to my stomach.
11:13I'm going to bust you up.
11:15I'm going to bust you up.
11:16It's to be bad.
11:18You could feel it when you walked in the house,
11:20the anger, the evil almost.
11:23Like, you could feel it.
11:24I'm going to bust you up just to be bad.
11:28Ashley knew that whenever everybody was gone,
11:30if he was upset or angry,
11:31that he was going to hurt her.
11:35I remember she showed up at my apartment,
11:38just bloodied up.
11:40She had her stuff with her,
11:42but she wouldn't talk.
11:44She would never tell us what happened.
11:47And she stayed maybe two days with me
11:50and went back.
11:53Why didn't you leave?
11:54I can't answer that.
11:57Maybe she didn't believe that it was as controlling,
12:00and maybe she thought that was love.
12:02Maybe she didn't know the difference.
12:05Despite his controlling behavior,
12:08Ashley stays with Terry.
12:09See how fast he's going over here.
12:12Telephone.
12:133.1!
12:15Telephone.
12:16I know that was something she always wanted,
12:25was to have the big, pretty wedding
12:26and the big, pretty dress,
12:29and just to be the center of attention for a day.
12:33And he said,
12:34no, I'm never going to get married again,
12:35because he had already been married
12:37and gotten a divorce.
12:38And I think that hurt Ashley,
12:40but eventually I think she accepted it.
12:43I really wanted Ashley to have a happy little family,
12:47because I knew that's what she wanted.
12:48She wanted the happy little life.
12:50After eight years with Terry,
12:55Ashley has a baby girl.
12:57She's mommy's baby.
12:59Trinity.
13:00She was super happy she was having a little girl.
13:04She would call me,
13:05and we would talk about T names.
13:08It had to be a name that started with T.
13:10But I used to say,
13:11why does it have to start with a T?
13:13And, of course, Terry is where it came from.
13:16Jack, stand up, daddy.
13:18She was a great mom.
13:20Come get it.
13:21Come get the cars.
13:23And he doted over her.
13:27Do be.
13:28That, I can honestly say,
13:30was the best time of their lives,
13:33that they were probably happy.
13:37I'm going to catch you being bad.
13:38Two years later,
13:40on December 15th, 2011,
13:43Ashley and Terry
13:44welcomed baby Tyson into the family.
13:46Wave at the camera.
13:47I'll let you go.
13:48Play the game.
13:50I feel like she loved him
13:52way more than she should have.
13:55He made her
13:56into the woman
13:58that takes care of the house,
14:00the woman that cooks the food,
14:02makes sure the meals are on the table,
14:03washes their clothes.
14:05He expected her to do everything,
14:07but don't get upset
14:09at anything he does.
14:13She learned how to cook
14:14and I guess she liked her cooking
14:16because she did.
14:18She got big.
14:19Look at that.
14:21Terry would call her fat
14:22and you could tell it bothered her,
14:24but I think she got used to
14:26being body shamed by him.
14:28Don't do it, Ashley.
14:29Don't be like that.
14:30Don't be like that, Ashley.
14:31It was like he was play poking fun,
14:34but there was an underlying
14:36meanness to it.
14:38I'm looking at my plate.
14:40I think he wanted her to feel like
14:43no one else would have her
14:44because he wanted to keep her for himself.
14:48She was so self-conscious.
14:50She gained a bunch of weight.
14:52She didn't want to go out.
14:55She couldn't go nowhere.
14:56She couldn't do anything,
14:57so she just added home and ate.
15:01Go right down over here.
15:03She would avoid certain chairs and stuff
15:05because she knew she couldn't fit in them.
15:07That kind of hurt me to see
15:09because that's how big she got.
15:12And she would talk about it all the time.
15:14Oh, I need to lose weight.
15:15I want to lose weight.
15:16Just wait till I'm as skinny
15:18as you are again, you know?
15:20And she did try to lose the weight,
15:22but it was hard
15:23because, like I said,
15:24she was doing everything
15:26for everybody all the time.
15:28She was just living to take care of the kids,
15:31and whatever Terry needed taken care of,
15:34that's what she did.
15:35Terry was keeping her in that cycle intentionally
15:38because as long as she wasn't happy,
15:40you know, she wasn't trying to get away.
15:44Even though she wasn't happy,
15:45she was going to stay for Trinity and Tyson.
15:51She wanted the best for them kids.
15:53She did.
15:54She wanted them to be able to do
15:56anything that they wanted to do.
15:58That's whenever she decided
15:59she was going to start going to school and stuff.
16:04Ashley got a job at the probation office,
16:07and they're the ones that got her
16:09into becoming a probation officer.
16:11So she started going to school.
16:14But she did it.
16:15She graduated with a bachelor's degree.
16:18They hired her right off the bat.
16:20She became a probation officer.
16:23To have two small children
16:25and do everything she did,
16:28oh, I was proud of her.
16:29I was very proud.
16:31She was young, beautiful, smart.
16:37Everything he wasn't.
16:40She portrayed everything like
16:42everything is fine, I'm happy,
16:45living the dream, living the life,
16:47but I don't feel like that's the way it was.
16:50I think that he got her to a point
16:53where she felt that she was not good enough,
16:57not pretty, and not, you know, sexy.
17:01Then, in 2017, Ashley's world comes crashing down.
17:07She went through his phone.
17:08I think that's how she found out.
17:10He was paying for another woman's apartment
17:12and paying her bills.
17:14I thought it was disgusting
17:16because Ashley was working
17:18trying to keep them above water
17:22and he's paying bills
17:24on a whole other household.
17:27Like I was told, that was his woman.
17:30Ashley was just crazy baby mama.
17:34That was his choice to go off
17:36and have an affair,
17:37but somehow it always turned around
17:39and it was Ashley's fault.
17:40Well, you made me do this, you know,
17:42and if you look better,
17:44if you were skinnier, I would stay around.
17:46Yeah, it was always Ashley's fault.
17:48I know they fought about it
17:49and I told her, I was like,
17:52you know he's cheating on you.
17:54And she said, yeah, I know,
17:56but I'm not giving up like that.
18:00She gave him an ultimatum
18:02of you either leave and go with her
18:05or you marry me.
18:08I felt like I was looking
18:09at a car crash beginning to happen.
18:14It's 2018 and Ashley gets the proposal
18:26she's been dreaming of.
18:29Ashley called me and said,
18:30I'm getting married on August 18th.
18:33And I said, what?
18:35She already had the invitations.
18:38She was just happy that she was going to get to get married.
18:40You know, something she dreamed about her whole life.
18:45I wanted to just shake her
18:47and be like, what are you doing?
18:50I just knew in my heart
18:51that's not what you need to do.
18:54You need to leave him.
18:55Terry showed up to his wedding
19:00with sunglasses on.
19:03The night before the wedding,
19:04he was so drunk.
19:06His eyes were so bloodshot
19:08that he wore the glasses to hide the fact
19:10that he was just messed up.
19:15I thought to myself,
19:16why did she still marry him?
19:19Why?
19:19Why?
19:19She looked very pretty,
19:23but it wasn't the happy wedding
19:24that it should have been.
19:27It felt like everybody in the whole room
19:29was watching my sister look like a fool.
19:33And I wanted to be excited for her,
19:35but I did not go to the wedding.
19:39And it's not that I didn't want to be there for Ashley,
19:42it's just that I wanted her to leave him so bad.
19:47Ashley said, well, he's taking it
19:50as if our entire life started over
19:52when we got married.
19:53But that's not the way it works.
19:58Woo!
19:59What's up here?
20:03Look at this s***.
20:04He got me down for his birthday.
20:06We're doing it that night.
20:10A year after getting married,
20:12Ashley and Terry go on vacation with friends
20:14to Cancun, Mexico.
20:15I thought we had to rejuvenate the day.
20:21While they were there,
20:23one of his people told Ashley
20:25that he was having another in-appear.
20:28It was like the switch had finally flipped for Ashley.
20:32She wasn't going to be unhappy anymore,
20:34and she wasn't going to let him
20:35be the reason she was unhappy anymore.
20:37That's when she decided
20:39she was going to have the weight loss surgery,
20:42and she did.
20:43She was losing weight,
20:46and she was sticking to the diet really well.
20:48I was, like, super stoked,
20:50because I was like,
20:51I can't wait to see what Ashley's going to do,
20:53you know?
20:54It was like watching
20:56a transformation,
20:58making sure she got her workout in,
21:00going to the personal trainer.
21:02So she did a complete 360.
21:05We started seeing her smile again,
21:08and I was just so happy to see Ashley back.
21:16Let me go and hit the thing right here right quick.
21:18Let me hit the thing!
21:20Terry was threatened.
21:22She would just make little remarks
21:23about how he didn't want her
21:25to go to the personal trainer.
21:27She told me,
21:28he thinks I'm still a little girl.
21:30I'm a grown woman now.
21:31So, yeah, he was threatened.
21:36Her daughter, Trinity,
21:38had a very hard time.
21:42She couldn't tell me
21:44why they were fighting.
21:46All she could tell me was
21:47that Terry
21:49held her mom down
21:51on the floor
21:53and had a gun
21:54in her mouth,
21:55and it was loaded.
21:56He had knocked Ashley over
21:58on the couch
21:59and put a gun in her mouth,
22:01and Ashley was trying
22:03to get Trinity
22:04to call 911.
22:06And he told Trinity
22:07that if you
22:09call anybody,
22:10I'm going to kill her.
22:13But again,
22:14Ashley would not tell
22:16me anything.
22:18So Ashley
22:19probably lived
22:20in more terror
22:21than I'll ever know
22:22because she hid it
22:24from me.
22:27In September 2021,
22:30Terry moves out.
22:32Amanda told me
22:33that Ashley's
22:35finally going to
22:36divorce Terry.
22:36I think everybody
22:38was ecstatic.
22:40She started making plans,
22:42and she was doing
22:43all the work.
22:45She found him
22:46an apartment,
22:47bought furniture
22:48for the apartment
22:49with her check,
22:50and he realized
22:51that Ashley
22:52is serious.
22:54So she started
22:55like following her,
22:57like following her around.
23:02She didn't tell me
23:03he was pulling guns
23:04on her,
23:05but from the look
23:07on her face,
23:07I knew she was scared.
23:10She said,
23:10Mom,
23:11why won't Terry
23:12leave me alone?
23:14I said,
23:14men don't go
23:15through divorce as well.
23:16They're not like women.
23:17They just can't handle it.
23:18And that's what I said.
23:21And I wished
23:21I'd have said more.
23:25Because I didn't know
23:26that was the last time
23:27I would talk to her.
23:31To escape Terry,
23:33Ashley moves in
23:34with her sister.
23:36She had moved over
23:37to Amanda's house,
23:38and she was living
23:39there with the kids.
23:41They were all planning
23:42to cook dinner,
23:43and they were making ribs.
23:45But I called Ashley,
23:47and I was like,
23:47Ashley,
23:48make sure that,
23:49you know,
23:49Mom don't mess up
23:50the ribs.
23:52Ashley had told me
23:53that she was going
23:53to pay the sports coach,
23:56and she was going
23:57to come right back.
24:00But she never ended
24:01up coming back.
24:05Mama 911,
24:06where's your emergency?
24:07Ma'am,
24:08my brother-in-law
24:09just called me
24:10and told me
24:10he killed my sister.
24:11On the evening
24:19of October 23rd,
24:212021,
24:22a business owner
24:24called 911.
24:25Hello, 911.
24:26He observed
24:27a disturbance
24:28between one of his clients
24:30and her husband.
24:31There's a guy here
24:32with a gun at my shop.
24:33Where at?
24:34He doesn't identify him
24:36other than it's a guy
24:37with a gun
24:37chasing us around.
24:39Stop!
24:39Stop!
24:40Stop!
24:40Stop!
24:43Stop!
24:44Stop!
24:45The suspect
24:46was pointing a firearm,
24:48making verbal threats.
24:49He's chasing me
24:50with a gun.
24:51And you said
24:51somebody's chasing you
24:52with a gun?
24:54Yeah, now he's
24:55now he's
24:56trapped around the corner.
24:58That's a top
24:59priority call.
25:00Any type of disturbance,
25:02but especially one
25:03that we know
25:03there's a weapon involved.
25:05So immediately,
25:06they get multiple units
25:07to respond to this location
25:08to try to catch the suspect.
25:10What does he look like, sir?
25:13His name is Terry.
25:14He's a black male,
25:1562.
25:17Terry?
25:18Okay.
25:18Why is he chasing you
25:19with the gun, though?
25:20Because his wife was there?
25:22Yes.
25:23Now he's dropping off now.
25:28Multiple units
25:28are heading
25:29to that location.
25:30But within minutes,
25:32the suspect
25:33decided to return,
25:34and this is when
25:35everything went
25:36to absolute chaos.
25:37Ashley hadn't been gone
25:4425 minutes.
25:47I had my phone,
25:48like, right here,
25:49and I said,
25:50Terry.
25:51I looked at it,
25:53and something told me
25:54to answer the phone.
25:55And the first thing
25:57he said was,
25:59I shot,
25:59I shot Ashley,
26:00I shot Ashley.
26:01And that's when
26:03Amanda started
26:04calling me screaming
26:05that he killed her,
26:08that he killed Ashley.
26:12I don't know,
26:12my body just went
26:13into shock,
26:15I guess.
26:16And I told her
26:17to call 911.
26:18I knew where to go
26:29because she said,
26:31I'm going to pay
26:32the sports coach.
26:35After our male victim
26:36realized the coast
26:37was clear,
26:38he got back on the phone,
26:39called 911.
26:40Can you get them here?
26:42The dude came back
26:43and opened fire
26:43and shot her.
26:45Did the cops cool down?
26:47OK, talk to the police.
26:48We'll get EMS headed
26:49that way.
26:50He came back
26:50and shot her.
26:51When the responding
26:52officers arrive
26:54at the scene,
26:54they find a very
26:56distraught male victim.
26:57He was shaking,
26:58he was upset,
26:59he was clearly
27:00frightened for his life.
27:02But once he was able
27:03to compose himself,
27:05he was able to tell us
27:06that our suspect
27:07is a man by the name
27:08of Terry Barlow.
27:09All units were actively
27:11looking for this man.
27:14Our victim was
27:15Ashley Barlow.
27:16She'd had multiple
27:17gunshot wounds
27:18throughout her entire body.
27:20It was a very
27:21disturbing crime scene.
27:25The cops are already here!
27:28Ma'am!
27:29Oh my God!
27:31Ma'am!
27:32Ma'am!
27:34When I got there,
27:35she was just laying
27:36in, like, the middle
27:37of a parking lot.
27:39And I just remember
27:40saying,
27:41why aren't y'all
27:42doing anything?
27:43Why aren't y'all
27:43doing anything?
27:45They were, like,
27:46looking at me
27:47and shaking their head.
27:50No!
27:51Oh no!
27:54There's no words
27:56that can describe
27:57the way you feel
27:58when you pull up
28:00and see your sister dead,
28:02shot down in the middle
28:04of the street
28:04like a dog.
28:05And then Terry came back.
28:10He came back
28:11and tried to pretend
28:12like he didn't know
28:13what was going on,
28:14what happened to my wife.
28:16And Amanda lost it.
28:17Amanda tried to get to him,
28:19but the cops held her back.
28:20She started screaming,
28:21you know,
28:22that's the
28:22killed my sister.
28:24And I guess that's when
28:25they put him under arrest.
28:26When I get there,
28:28I'm able to observe
28:29the scene,
28:31observe the body.
28:32I'm advised
28:33that our suspect
28:34has been taken
28:35into custody.
28:37I'm sorry,
28:38I didn't mean to do that.
28:40Patrol officers
28:41had already
28:42taped off everything
28:43with crime scene tape
28:44and had Mr. Barlow
28:46in the back
28:46of a patrol car.
28:48We start collecting evidence,
28:50taking pictures.
28:51I saw numerous
28:52shell casings everywhere.
28:53There was a .38
28:55and a .40 caliber.
28:58We knew there was
28:58at least two different
28:59handguns,
29:00but they were not there.
29:02There was also
29:02a GPS tracker
29:04that was laying next to her,
29:06which was odd.
29:09Where she was hit
29:10was very close range,
29:12front of her face
29:13and her chest.
29:14I knew right away
29:15this wasn't just
29:16something that got
29:17out of hand,
29:17a sudden passion type deal.
29:19This was somebody
29:20that was exacting
29:22their violence
29:23in a very personal way.
29:26We were unable
29:26to find any handguns there,
29:28but we did notice
29:29one of the businesses
29:30did have cameras.
29:32Their video had audio.
29:35We were able
29:36to hear everything
29:37from the first disturbance
29:38to when the actual
29:39homicide took place.
29:41He chases down his wife
29:55as she's absolutely
29:57begging for her life.
29:59He takes her out
30:00and shoots her
30:01multiple times
30:01and then has the audacity
30:04to tell her
30:05it's her fault.
30:06Look what you've made me do.
30:07I have not seen
30:11anything so cold-blooded
30:12and as she's laying
30:14there mortally wounded
30:15continues to fire on her.
30:17That was horrible.
30:25Cold-blooded killer.
30:28At that moment,
30:29Terry's in the back
30:30of a patrol car.
30:31You just got to clear
30:32any personal biases
30:33of what you just saw
30:34and you got to give him
30:36a fair shot as well
30:37of telling you
30:38his side of it.
30:39you know,
30:40be Detective Sergeant
30:42Barrero,
30:43not Yvette Barrero,
30:45the person
30:46that just is enraged.
30:48Hey, Mr. Barrero.
30:49Yes, ma'am.
30:50My name is Sergeant Barrero
30:51with the Beaumont
30:52Police Department.
30:54Obviously, you know
30:55what you've done
30:57here tonight.
30:59What I needed...
31:00I messed up.
31:01I messed up.
31:02I wanted to let him know
31:03that I was willing
31:05to listen to what
31:05he had to say
31:06even though I'd seen
31:08the footage.
31:09I know, baby.
31:10It's going to be all right.
31:12I love my wife.
31:13It was vital
31:14that I reach out to him
31:15so that I could build
31:17some sort of rapport
31:18with him so that
31:19he would feel comfortable
31:21in telling me
31:21what led up
31:22to this horrific act.
31:24We all mess up in life.
31:27The most important thing
31:28going forward here
31:29is to make this right.
31:31We just wanted to know
31:32what happened that night
31:34and we needed him
31:35to do that.
31:36Our main goal
31:37is what happened,
31:39what led up to this
31:40and especially
31:41what did he do
31:42with the weapons.
31:52Terry Barlow
31:53is interviewed
31:53by detectives
31:54after fatally
31:55shooting Ashley.
31:57Me and my wife,
31:59we've been
31:59fussing
32:00while I come home
32:02from work
32:02and she said
32:04that she wanted
32:06a divorce.
32:07Okay.
32:07After 20 years,
32:09you ain't going
32:09to tell me why
32:10and she said
32:12she just needs space.
32:15So I say,
32:17okay,
32:18if you need space
32:20and we're going
32:21to work on this,
32:23I'll move.
32:24By the time
32:25we got to the station
32:25I'd learned
32:26that he had placed
32:27a tracker
32:28on her car
32:29and that he'd
32:30been following her
32:31and knowing
32:31every step she took.
32:33I bought this tracker
32:34and I put it
32:35on the car.
32:36Today,
32:37it popped up
32:39and I said
32:41to myself,
32:43I'm going to go
32:44over here,
32:45find out
32:46what's going on.
32:48It didn't go right.
32:49Terry was mad
32:50and upset
32:51that Ashley
32:52was standing there
32:53talking to another
32:54male subject.
32:55He pulls up
32:56and he gets out
32:56and he confronts Ashley
32:57and he doesn't remember
32:59what happened next.
33:01She would want me
33:02to turn myself in
33:03and do the right thing.
33:06He's telling us
33:07he wants to do
33:08the right thing.
33:08I just wasn't
33:10believing it.
33:11Terry,
33:12I know you said
33:12that you knew
33:14that you had hurt her.
33:16Did you know
33:16when you left
33:17how severe it was?
33:19No,
33:19I didn't know.
33:20I didn't know.
33:21I didn't know.
33:21I'm thinking,
33:22man,
33:23you really are
33:24a callous,
33:25evil,
33:26selfish person
33:27for doing
33:28what you just did
33:29but making this
33:30all about you.
33:31Did you think
33:32about calling 911
33:34to get her some help?
33:35I didn't know
33:36what I had done.
33:37I just noticed
33:37he needed me.
33:38She needed me
33:39and I was going back
33:41because she needed me.
33:42He's telling us
33:43that he's messed up
33:45but when we get down
33:46to the brass tacks of it,
33:48you know,
33:48what did you do
33:48with the weapons?
33:49Then all of a sudden
33:50he has memory losses.
33:52So you dumped
33:53the 380 over there
33:54off Laurel.
33:55Did you do the same
33:56with the 40?
33:56I don't remember, ma'am.
33:58Once I got going,
34:00all I started thinking
34:01about was my kids.
34:02He has no idea
34:03we have video footage
34:05of the homicide
34:06and how brutal it was.
34:08That just goes to show
34:09the type of monster
34:11he really was.
34:13Do you think
34:14you might have
34:14tossed it out the window?
34:15I don't remember
34:16and it's killing me
34:18because I don't want
34:19nobody to get there
34:20and hurt somebody else.
34:23It's like he wanted us
34:24to know almost everything
34:26except the part
34:27where he's the most guilty.
34:28and not helping us
34:31find the weapon.
34:33Everything that he was
34:33doing that night
34:34was trying to set up
34:35for his defense.
34:37You're under arrest
34:38for the murder
34:39of your wife
34:40and aggravated assault
34:42with a deadly weapon.
34:44So when he's arrested
34:46that night,
34:47he's transported
34:47to Jefferson County Jail
34:49and the following morning
34:50he was arraigned
34:51by a judge
34:52for the charge of murder.
34:55We have video
34:56that shows the murder.
34:57We have a GPS tracker.
35:00We have shell casings.
35:02What we don't have
35:03is the actual murder weapons.
35:05And we know
35:06there's at least two
35:06because we found
35:07two different shell casings.
35:14Hey, I found the gun
35:15and I mean it matches up
35:18with what y'all said.
35:19It's a Smith & Wesson
35:20single stack 380.
35:22So the night of the incident
35:23we are able to locate
35:25one of the weapons.
35:26We were able to take
35:28that into custody.
35:29I mean, that's solid evidence.
35:31But we still needed
35:31to find the second weapon.
35:37Two days later,
35:38police received footage
35:39from a second surveillance camera.
35:41This video was absolutely
35:45the nail in his coffin,
35:46so to speak,
35:47because this angle
35:49was directly in front.
35:51When you put the two videos together
35:53and you hear the audio
35:54from this one
35:55and then what's actually occurring,
35:57it still gives me nightmares.
35:59you could just see
36:06the pure evil
36:07in his intents
36:08and his actions.
36:12We see how he
36:14shot her point blank.
36:16She pled for her life
36:18and could not do anything.
36:20He reloaded,
36:21exchanged weapons,
36:22and we now see him
36:24with pure malice
36:26and evil
36:27snuff her life out.
36:33He tried to say
36:34at one point
36:35she reached for the weapon.
36:37He didn't remember
36:38how many times he shot.
36:40He didn't remember
36:41what he did with the weapon.
36:42This video shows us
36:43that everything he was saying
36:45was completely made up.
36:47The autopsy confirms
36:50two different guns
36:51were used to kill Ashley.
36:54That just kept us
36:56really laser focused
36:58on trying to track down
36:59that second weapon
37:00and we weren't going to give up.
37:03I don't know how many times
37:04I walked around there
37:05looking and crawling in ditches.
37:07Fortunately for us,
37:09we got some divine intervention.
37:11A homeowner doing yard work
37:13discovers the second gun.
37:15The second weapon
37:16that we recovered
37:17was a 40 automatic
37:19Smith & Wesson.
37:21Later testing showed
37:22that it matched
37:23the shell casings
37:24that was used
37:25in Ashley's homicide.
37:26So we finally
37:27found Terry's gun.
37:29So there was no doubt
37:31that this was an execution.
37:34He brought multiple weapons
37:35to carry out this hatred.
37:38Prosecutor Phillip Smith
37:39is assigned to the case.
37:41I worked in the
37:43252nd District Court.
37:45Ashley was the
37:46probation officer
37:46in the courtroom next door.
37:48So everybody
37:49is understandably upset
37:51that one of our own
37:53has been taken
37:54in this manner.
37:56In this case,
37:57we were fortunate
37:58to have high resolution video
38:00from across the street.
38:01The evidence
38:02had been gathered.
38:03The police
38:04had done a great job.
38:05We had all the evidence
38:06in the world
38:07to show that he was guilty.
38:10Terry enters a plea deal
38:11and sentencing begins.
38:14He tried to put
38:15blame on Ashley
38:17for why he did it.
38:19He had a gun,
38:20but she was reaching
38:21for the gun
38:22in his pocket.
38:23The video showed
38:24that was not true.
38:26She was in fact
38:26running away from him
38:28when he takes the gun out
38:29and starts shooting at her.
38:31He's also
38:32putting blame
38:34on a deceased person
38:36for making him do it.
38:38And that's telling.
38:40That's a narcissist.
38:42To sit there
38:42on the stand
38:44to me
38:45was disgusting
38:46listening to him
38:48try to make excuses
38:49for what he done.
38:51Terry pleads guilty
38:53to Ashley's murder
38:54and the aggravated assault
38:55of the sports coach.
38:57He's sentenced
38:58to 50 years.
39:00That basically means
39:01he'll never see
39:02the light of day again.
39:04You know,
39:04he'll see his judgment
39:05one day
39:06and he'll have to
39:06account for that
39:07and he'll be far worse
39:08than what happens
39:09here on earth.
39:11I think the world
39:12is a better place
39:13with Terry Barlow
39:14in prison.
39:16The only time
39:17I want to hear
39:17that man's name
39:18is whenever
39:18it's in an obituary.
39:20I felt like Terry
39:21stole Ashley
39:22a long time ago.
39:28You know,
39:29everybody else
39:29talks about losing Ashley
39:31the day she died.
39:33But I lost Ashley
39:35when Terry took her.
39:37I think she thought
39:42I was stronger
39:43than her
39:43and I wasn't.
39:46She was strong.
39:50She was,
39:51she was so strong
39:52and she endured
39:55so much
39:56and she still
39:57continued to take care
39:58of her kids.
40:00She was a good mom.
40:01I want Ashley
40:03to be remembered
40:04as the kind
40:06person that she was.
40:08I want the kids
40:09to remember
40:10what a great mother
40:12she really was
40:13to them
40:13because I hope
40:15it never fades
40:16from their memory.
40:18I want Ashley
40:18to be remembered
40:19for her perseverance
40:20that you can have
40:23just the most
40:26horrible things
40:27happen to you
40:28but you can still
40:29stand up and grow
40:30and be a beautiful person.
40:33I think she won
40:34in the end.
40:34I do.
40:35I think she won
40:35that battle in the end
40:36because she got
40:38what she wanted.
40:39She did not want
40:39her kids raised
40:40with him
40:40and that's
40:42that's what happened.
40:43He's not raising
40:44them kids.
40:46It's never
40:47going to ever
40:48be over
40:48because she was
40:50my baby.
40:50She was my daughter
40:51that I raised
40:53and was so proud of.
40:56They look like
41:14a very, very
41:15happy couple.
41:16She loved him.
41:17I could tell.
41:19He was going to be
41:19in a wheelchair
41:20for the rest of his life.
41:22Appearances can be deceiving.
41:23No one knew
41:24what a monster he was.
41:26No one knew
41:26and he had one
41:27love him.
41:27No one knew
41:28if he was a alcoholic
41:29or he was going to be
41:30in a child's house,
41:30whether a monster
41:31or J-9-1 or J-9-1
41:32wife is going to be
41:32in a girl's office.
41:36So long as he said,
41:36God, he'll try
41:37he hates this sport HAVacco
41:38or she will do
41:39able in school.
41:41He's going to be
41:42Monday morning
41:42and he has
41:4310 minutes
41:43and he's going to have
41:4420 minutes
41:44after the coming
41:45or even
41:45
41:49or J-1
41:50.
41:52So long as she
