The father of Cairns woman Toyah Cordingley has recounted the moment he uncovered the body of his daughter in a shallow grave. Former nurse Rajwinder Singh has pleaded not guilty to killing the 24-year-old on an isolated beach north of Cairns in 2018.

00:00Toya Cordingly's father Troy Cordingly returned to the witness stand on the third day of the
00:07Supreme Court trial in Cairns where Rajwinder Singh stands accused of murder. Mr Singh, a
00:13former nurse who was extradited from India and charged with Toya's murder in 2023, has always
00:19denied killing the young woman. Mr Cordingly choked back tears as he recounted searching
00:24for his daughter at Wongeti Beach north of Cairns the morning after she was reported missing.
00:30He told the court that more than an hour into the search he noticed an unnatural mound of sand.
00:35He described how he exposed his daughter's foot when he scraped some sand away from that mound
00:41and went on to testify how he recoiled in horror and immediately started calling for help.
00:47The jury was then shown body-worn camera footage taken by the first police officer on the scene
00:53which showed the mound of sand and his brief inspection of it.
00:57The focus of the trial today has now moved to the police investigation into Toya's death,
01:03particularly their dealings with her then-boyfriend, Marco Heidenreich.
01:07Several police witnesses told the court Mr Heidenreich appeared to be in shock in the hours and days
01:12after the discovery of Toya's body, but described him as compliant with the investigation.
