00:00Chairman of the NCRHA, Dr Tim Gopi Singh, is pushing back.
00:05In response, he says, the figures being quoted by the Nurses Association are misleading.
00:10According to Dr Gopi Singh, the NCRHA currently has 893 staff nurses, along with more than 400 enrolled nursing assistants.
00:21Speaking with TV6 via telephone, he said,
00:24There are only four vacancies for staff nurses and approximately 300 vacancies for assistants.
00:31But the authority cannot fill those positions because not enough qualified applicants exists.
00:37He adds that a recent recruitment drive advertised 100 openings, yet only 42 qualified candidates applied, and the authority is now moving to hire them.
00:48There is a capacity of midwives. We need specialists, subspecialists, nurses in cardiology, neurosurgery, nephrology, accident and emergency, and they cannot be found.
01:02We do not have them in this country.
01:04So I think he should focus his attention on making sure that we have the qualified nurses in the various areas, so that if we find it necessary to employ the nurses, they would be available.
01:19However, the NCRHA is disputing the association's claims.
01:24Chairman Dr Gopi Singh argues that the figures are being overstated.
01:28I do not agree with the figure of 3,000 nurses. I do not know whether he is such that, from heart, or he has gotten that, or he has received that information.
01:39But we had a very amicable meeting with him, and the CEO met with him from the NCRHA.
01:45I don't see the need for protests, but that is his right. And if he wants to protest, that's fine.
