Britain and South Africa hand back Ghanaian royal artefacts

The more than 130 gold and bronze items were taken from Ghana between the 1870s and early 20th century.

00:01More than 130 gold and bronze artefacts taken between the 1870s and the early 20th century
00:08being returned to Ghana.
00:10They were delivered by Britain and South Africa to King Utunfuo Setutu II
00:15at the Munir Palace Museum in Kumasi on Sunday.
00:19The items included royal regalia, drums and ceremonial gold weights.
00:25Dating between 45 and 160 years old, the artefacts depict governance systems,
00:31spiritual beliefs and the role of gold in the Asante society.
00:36The King thanked South African mining company Anglo Gold Asante
00:40for returning several items purchased on the open market.
00:44Other artefacts come from the Barbier Moulle Museum in Geneva and a private collector.
00:50One of them is a wooden drum believed to have been seized during the Siege of Kumasi
00:56by British colonial forces in 1900.
01:00The Asante Kingdom was a powerful and wealthy state that ruled much of Ghana
01:05from the late 17th to the early 20th century before being annexed by Britain in 1901.
