00:10The conference which brought together leaders from around Africa and the Caribbean comes after the United Nations adopted a historical
00:16resolution that declared the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity.
00:22It does not ask us to inherit guilt, but it asks us to inherit responsibility. While we may not bear
00:31responsibility for actions committed centuries ago, we are responsible for the world those actions have helped to create.
00:39While unbinding the resolution pushed forward by Ghanaian President John Mahama goes beyond simple acknowledgement and asks nations involved in
00:47the slave trade to engage in restitution and compensation.
00:50And so today we must move from recognition to building the architecture for reparatory justice, to ensure the momentum generated
00:59by Resolution A-RES 80-250 is sustained and translated into practical outcomes.
