Nearly 10% of Europeans say they have no close friends: Where do people feel loneliest?
A new OECD report reveals that 8% of respondents across 22 EU countries say they have no close friends, while 3% report having no close family members.

00:07Spending little time interacting with others and feeling lonely are associated with up to 871,000 global deaths annually.
00:16Loneliness is also linked to poorer job performance, a higher risk of unemployment or leaving education early, and can shape voting behavior.
00:24In 2022, the share of people reporting that they felt lonely most of the time, or all of the time, over the past four weeks was the highest in France and Lithuania, at 11% and 9% respectively.
00:37Greece and Slovenia are the EU countries reporting the highest rate of respondents who interact with friends or family, at least daily, among OECD countries.
00:47By contrast, Lithuania has the highest share of respondents who haven't interacted either in person or remotely with friends or family who live nearby over the past seven days.
00:588% of respondents in 22 EU countries say they have no close friends, while 3% claim they have no close family members.

01:15In 21 European OECD countries, daily face-to-face interactions with friends and family fell consistently between 2006, 2015 and 2022, while remote contact increased following the COVID pandemic.
