00:21of Soviet Union, the numbers started to increase, and the largest number it was in 1997, it was
00:28almost 87, and then the situation started to improve. To curb the endemic, the European
00:34Union invested in renovating this hospital. It's a routine gesture for this doctor, but
00:44an unpleasant moment for his patient. A bronchoscopy carried out with brand new equipment, funded
00:49by European Aid, will allow doctors to examine the trichaea and bronchi. This is a crucial
00:55test for diagnosing tuberculosis. In the suburbs of Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city,
01:03the Romanu Hospital has been treating tuberculosis patients since 1937. At the height of the epidemic,
01:09it had 500 beds. Today, there are 150, most occupied by tuberculosis patients.

01:22Four years of work for a total cost of more than 13 million euros. 85% funded by the European
01:29Union's cohesion policy. The result? Modern rooms and high-tech equipment. This revolutionary genetic
01:37test delivers a diagnosis in just four hours and can detect drug resistance.
