05:17this is a classic of magic um this right here is what they call the cup and balls trick uh cup
05:22two separate words i'll edit that out but i i heard myself when i say it um uh for myself when i said
05:28it's what i meant to say uh okay now this right here is the oldest trick in magic it's the oldest
05:32trick in the book um well second oldest that water to wine thing the one guy did right um
05:37is his name jeff something he came back recently um now normally uh you see this game it's a hustle
05:44you've seen these before right there's usually one ball there's three cups you move it all around
05:47keep your eye on it you've been to a baseball game all right good uh it's how you went ahead on a
05:52jumbotron but the original version did not use three cups it only used one 50 50 very easy to play
05:57alicia we're gonna play this game now the rules are very simple all you do is guess you just have
06:01to guess if this ball is under the cup or if the ball is in my pocket those are the two places it can
06:05be okay and i'm gonna show you how this all works and i'm not gonna do any of the other jokes you
06:08know okay um sorry i cut myself on that one um now before we get started alicia just so you know
06:15this game is not about magic this is about psychology okay you'll see what i mean you ready to play

08:13this works is of course scam it's a complete scam i have total control the whole time all that stuff

08:57roll it i'd have seen it but as if it kind of proved my point no you didn't i know exactly that's okay

09:35way so if i take this so this is an illusion it looks like i'm putting stuff away here i always have
09:38it in my hand right so you got to hide a bunch of these in your hand make sure you got a lot of these
09:42bad but then you got to hide them all right i mean along with these little oranges these little
09:44oranges are tough too i know these are fine you can't really do much else with that i know it's a lot of
09:48fun but also in the end of it all that's how you always end up with this part when you end up like
09:51all those oranges that's how you end up with all of it and i know exactly isn't it fun what can we

10:12magic camera i'm gonna take your picture this is the moment we're gonna go back to one two three and
10:18later jackie you has all the magic right where he needs one card magically flies into my pocket here

11:08the instant camera was invented in 1948 and then it peaked in popularity in the 1980s and then it
11:14totally fell off until today i was shocked to learn this but the instant camera is more popular
11:22today sells more units today than at any time since its invention in 1948 so i know it's shocking so
11:28my question was why are people so interested today in this technology of yesterday and the reason is
11:36nostalgia people love the idea they can take a picture and get the results instantly and go back
11:41in time with this old technology so in a way this is a portal back in time so i've created a card trick
11:49using an instant camera to go back in time and we'll use this this is a sealed regulation pack of
11:56cards you'll notice that it's sealed on all sides in plastic and then under the plastic there's a sticker
12:02that keeps the cards stuck inside now i want to take a picture of this moment as the before moment
12:10the moment that we're going to travel back to so laura would you hold up that deck of cards like this
12:15i'm going to take your picture and what's going to happen is it's going to be a jumping photo so i'm
12:21going to count to three and then you'll i'm kidding it's not a jumping photo i saw the blood drain out of
12:26your face at that moment here we go i just want you to hold it up because this is the moment we're
12:30going to go back to one two three
12:36and instantly we will have a record of this moment now it does take about 90 seconds to develop so
12:44while we're doing that i want you to open this deck of cards up so i will help you there's a little
12:49plastic bag here and if we use that we can go all the way around like so and now that exposes the
12:59sticker can you do me a favor and just tear through that sticker i'll start it for you right there and
13:05then you just tear across and when you've torn that sticker off i want you to take out the cards
13:11yeah go ahead and place them face up on the table yeah that's good excellent now this is what we call
13:23new deck order this is how they come from the factory and by the way while this photo develops
13:30i'm going to tuck it inside the plastic so you can keep an eye on it it's not fully developed and it'll
13:34develop better in the dark so better put your hand over that stick over that yeah like that perfect all
13:40right laura this is what we call new deck order it's two jokers then ace through king of hearts
13:48ace through king of clubs king through ace of diamonds king through ace of spades this is how
13:52they come from the factory and i'm gonna have you pick a card to help us go back in time so as i go
13:57through you just call stop stop right here this way are you sure it's this one right here yes nine of
14:05diamonds i'll put it between the eight and the ten of diamonds and i want you to see
14:10these cards really are in order and the eight and the ten have one card between them and that's
14:15the one you chose the nine of diamonds this is important for when we go back in time but now we
14:21have to go forward in time so i'm going to give the cards a little mix this is how you might mix them
14:26in a private game of cards and of course after the shuffle you give them a couple of cuts why don't
14:33you with your other hand give them a cut yeah oh you cut right to your card the nine of diamonds i'll
14:40cut it back into the middle there that's a bonus trick ladies and gentlemen not every performance
14:46gets that trick um okay so i showed you how they shuffle in a private game let me show you another
14:51way to shuffle this is how they shuffle in a casino game of cards the reason they do this way in a casino
14:56is because the cards are on the table you can never see which way is up so i showed you the overhand
15:01shuffle i showed you the casino shuffle this was the shuffle i used to use as a kid it's just called
15:06cutting cards all over the table and now the last shuffle which is the most important i'm going to
15:13turn some of these cards up some down some up some down some up some down some up some down some up some
15:19down some up some down so they make a true mess of cards and in this condition i want you to see that
15:27they really do go face up into face down in fact it would be hard to tell whether your card was up or
15:33down unless you really looked we went forward in time we did three different shuffles it is now time
15:41to go back in time and to do it we rewind the deck
15:44and if i did that correctly all the cards are now face down except for one and that's your nine of diamonds
15:59but if we really went back in time all of the cards would be back in order that's the two jokers
16:13the ace through king of hearts ace through king of clubs king through ace of diamonds king through ace
16:18of spades and even the one that you picked is still reversed that's your nine of diamonds
16:24but the cards can go back in time they can't go back in space which means if we went back to the
16:30moment i took that picture these cards can't get back in the box but if you lift your hand
16:37this box has gone back in time it's now sealed with the plastic on it it's sealed with your picture
16:46on the inside i want you to check that there are no protrusions or holes and under the plastic the little
16:52seal the sticker that you broke is now sealed again and i'm going to give you this deck of cards
16:57and this box as a souvenir of your trip back in time

29:17uh probably not in fact there's a magician's test would you like to do it no but yes i'll do it of
29:23course oh yeah you'll do anything for me yes i will question one of the tests what is this
29:30that is a wooden thing that looks like a guillotine yeah yeah it is a guillotine it's
29:34a guillotine it's a magician's test okay you didn't do so great on that one that's okay
29:38now this is a little riveted in that place a little blade there take a look at that make
29:41sure it does not move up and down okay no it doesn't no take a look at that box make sure
29:45there's nothing sneaky in my little box not that i can tell nothing you can even see that when i
29:52put it in there that blade moves past all three holes i mean we should all be so lucky right
29:58now this is the test yes put your finger through that tiny little hole no yeah you got to that's
30:04how we do the test that's it you make to pick whichever finger you want whichever thing you
30:08want to lose i mean the pinky thing oh the most sensitive finger on the human body i hope not
30:14dean can you feel that blade sitting on top of your finger yes i can i definitely feel that
30:18now here's how the test works if you have magic powers that blade will go right through your
30:21fingers leaving you unharmed and if you don't have magic powers then we'll deal with that when
30:25that happens okay okay here we go you ready yes one two three minutes ago yeah okay there's no way
30:33dean's gonna let me do this i i hope you don't should i not do it well i just i fear but at least i broke
30:38that pinky once so at the end of it doesn't really work that well well then it's fine don't

31:48uh an office supply store and a deck of playing cards now here's the strange thing uh we're gonna use
31:54one card in a little bit i'm gonna leave that sitting over here for just a moment uh but i want you guys oh
31:59actually you know what give me a favor take any card out that you like nope not that one but any
32:06other no one no not that one there we go that's good now take a look at the card and tell me do you
32:11like that card or would you like one of the others the choice is completely up to you that's okay you
32:16did give me a favor show the audience and as a matter of fact to make things even more permanent i'm
32:22going to give you this marker you can place a card face up here doesn't matter if i see what it is
32:25you can do a face up and i oh that's my favorite card the four of clubs because it reminds me of
32:30bed pups that's that's a whole other story um do me a favor take that marker and i want you to sign
32:35your name right on the face of the card that way in case you see the card again you know that show up
32:43you don't get jokes no i'm just wasting time that's what i know too but i can't say them on
32:49on television all right oh that is beautiful let's make sure we get a good look at that
32:55i'm going to uh get you to go ahead and get you tap the marker that's how i got it um now permanence
33:01this is kind of interesting i hope you guys can see this i'm just going to take this little guy and
33:05punch her a little hole right through there i don't know if you can see it right there the line all the
33:09way through here's the magic all you have to do is watch you might see the moment that hole moves
33:16from one place to another close your mouth that's how flies get in all right i'm sorry you can go
33:22and you can feel it you can feel it the hole is really there you can feel it the hole is really
33:25there i'm gonna move it again i'm gonna move it again watch watch i'll do it visually so you can
33:29really see the moment the hole moves which is kind of cool but keep your eye on the hole keep your eye on
33:35the hole but also watch the cards i'll do it slowly so you might not miss the moment go ahead and take a
33:42look at that one and the best thing is out of all these cards you end up picking card that one has
33:46the hole in it this one is a permanent reminder of our time together that is a trick with permanence
