00:00Hey, good morning, good afternoon, this is Butch Bartholomew of the Business Mentor
00:29blog over Manila Times. Today, Sunday, we have a very, very special guest, a long-time
00:35friend I met years ago, you know, imagine, even before pandemic, and I was able to reconnect
00:42her, and guess what? She's now a very successful entrepreneur, especially with their podcast,
00:48with their social media. But before we start, let us get to know how our friend, Mick Diaz,
00:55even began her journey. Good morning to you, or good afternoon to you, Mick, in Los Angeles.
01:02Good morning, how are you?
01:05Yes, a long time no see, no? Mick, tell us, at what age did you and your family migrate
01:14in the United States?
01:16I was 17 when I migrated to the U.S.
01:20Uh-huh, and you must be, what, what educational level are we, high school? You must have graduated
01:30high school, huh?
01:31Yes, I graduated high school, but I took one semester of college there in Manila, and then
01:38I moved.
01:39You moved to the United States.
01:42So, at early age, I understand, you know, a lot of, you know, you're still a very young
01:49teenager, you have a lot of friends in Manila, but what kind of advice would you say for people
01:56who are young, young people who are migrating with their families? I'm sure you learned a
02:01lot in your transition period, do you want, Mick?
02:04Yes, po.
02:05So, what kind of tips can you say that they have to be prepared for our listeners, our
02:12viewers over Manila Times?
02:16Oh, well, initially, you know, when they move, I suggest that, you know, if you're moving
02:27with young children, have them participate in various kinds of events.
02:34So, you know, if they like music, or if they like dancing, or if they like singing, have
02:41them join a choir, have them meet all kinds of people.
02:46And so, in that way, you know, it's easier for them to adjust to, you know, the kind of
02:52life here in the U.S.
02:54Talking about the kind of life, you know, you know, Filipinas, we have a different kind
03:00of life compared to what you have.
03:04In the Philippines, we have our call, our yaya, people who help us, people fix our bed,
03:11people cook meals.
03:12But what kind of preparation did your parents do to you and your siblings?
03:17So, before we left, my mom trained us to do things on our own, and to, you know, be able
03:28to do things for ourselves and do things on our own, such as, you know, cleaning our rooms,
03:37our bathrooms, the kitchen, sweeping the floor, things like that.
03:43So, when we moved here, it was easier for us, and it was, we were able to, you know, get used
03:54to life here without having extra help.
03:58Right, right.
03:59So, I'm sure it must be a tough, tough challenge for your mom, huh, to tell you and your siblings,
04:06oh, Mick, you have to learn this, you have to learn that, you know, I'm sure.
04:09But, again, there's always something as a reward.
04:13Now, you studied already, you studied here in the U.S., you finished college, and you
04:20entered into your entrepreneurial world.
04:23What business are you in right now, at the moment, Mick?
04:27What kind of business are you involved?
04:30Right now, I have a marketing, public relations, and advertising agency.
04:35Ah, tell us more about it.
04:38Baka a lot of our friends in Manila who are listening and who want to get your services.
04:45What kind of PR and agencies or services do you do?
04:50And so, basically, I have a podcast.
04:53I interview entrepreneurs, community leaders, entertainers, and passionate individuals who
05:02have their own projects, who want to share it to the world.
05:06And also, I'm a contributing writer to several local newspapers.
05:11And I also send out press releases to publications nationwide here in the U.S.
05:18And I offer graphic design, web design, photography, videography, and also event planning and printing.
05:29I have a partnership with printing press and also social media content creation.
05:37Wow, that's a full 360-degree service.
05:42Yes, because I realized that marketing agencies do certain tasks, but not everything.
05:53And advertising agencies do the same, but not everything.
05:58And public relations agencies do some of it.
06:02And so, you know, I realized that through my experiences, you know, in most recent years, I actually do everything.
06:13I mean, I do a lot of these things, you know, all, and it's an integrated, it's an integrated platform.
06:21So, okay, with that kind of numerous service, okay, how would you now say the sort of like a micro-small entrepreneur,
06:34somebody who's starting up a business, how can they get for you to assist them exactly?
06:43Like, for example, I'm just starting my business.
06:45It's about six months to one year.
06:48What kind of advice or approach would you say for an entrepreneur who is just a startup to avail of your service?
06:57My advice is having the mindset that people have to get to know you first.
07:04And it's really about your exposure and visibility and trying to get your name out there before anything else.
07:12And so that's the first thing, like, thinking about it in such a way that you're top of mind in a lot of people's minds.
07:23You know, that's my first advice.
07:27And really getting the word out about your company, about what you're doing.
07:32And, you know, I can help you with that.
07:36I do, like what I mentioned earlier, I do interviews.
07:41I can write an article and send it out to, you know, various media outlets.
07:47I can connect you with a lot of other people who do the same thing that I do in terms of podcasts, in terms of writing.
07:55So that's another thing that, you know, public relations people do.
08:02And, you know, I can help you with your marketing collateral and social media content as well, like building out the calendar for that.
08:12But, you know, it's a very competitive world, Mick, no, that you're in.
08:17It's really, in other words, 24-7 you have competition and it's a worldwide competition.
08:26How would you now set yourself apart?
08:28Like, why would people choose Mick Diaz?
08:31I think, well, for one thing, I'm very active in the local Filipino-American community in Los Angeles and Southern California.
08:44And so I do have relationships with some people from Nevada, from the Bay Area, like San Francisco Bay Area as well, and also the DMV area in New York.
08:55And, you know, through the years out of doing my podcast, I've gotten to know some people in the community.
09:03And so that's one way that we can help you, you know, with my business, Mick Diaz Presents.
09:11Yeah, I noticed you are relaunching your look.
09:17In other words, with a lot of very nice photography, your cover and everything.
09:24Is this really part of your rebranding, Mick, that I now see?
09:30Yes, it is.
09:32So, in the last five years, I've gone through rebranding.
09:38And so, yes, this is a new thing, like the relaunching of Mick Diaz Presents, offering more services for everyone.
09:49So, I think, Mick, you're trying to walk the talk, you know, as you advise entrepreneurs to do rebranding, you're doing it first yourself and proving to the world, like, you know, if Mick Diaz was like this before, this is now the new Mick Diaz, correct?
10:13Yes.
10:13Yeah, and I was surprised, I said, wow, is this Mick Diaz now of the 2025?
10:21Yes, because, you know, during the pandemic, we were stuck at home, right?
10:27And so I gained a lot of weight.
10:29And, you know, I've lost weight through the years.
10:32And so now I, you know, don't look the same anymore.
10:36So I need to do, I need to rebrand a lot of my collateral.
10:42Yeah, right, right.
10:43And I, you know, salute to the people who took your shots, who did your makeup and everything.
10:53They're so great in terms of doing the rebranding for Mick Diaz.
10:58So in terms of podcasts, anong bang value ngayon ng podcast?
11:04Because people, they are kind of split, no?
11:07They say, why would I do a podcast?
11:10And what kind of benefit will that do to the entrepreneur?
11:14What's your take on this, Mick?
11:16Well, I think the authority, the authority person or authoritarian persona is very important.
11:31Like people look to leaders from different sectors of society.
11:35And so that's why a lot of these podcasters are now, we call them influencers, you know, have gotten a lot of popularity.
11:46Because people look to other people for guidance or they look to other people.
11:53They, it's like an aspirational thing, you know, like they follow certain people because they want to be like them or they're, you know, the podcasters or hosts are doing something that they want to do that they're not doing yet.
12:09And so it's aspirational and, you know, if you look at it from the positive side, there's a lot of people who can, who can be inspired and who can be empowered by the things that you do.
12:24So, but Mick, you know, in the information highway nowadays, you know, a lot of people are, you know, kind of baffled.
12:33They don't know what is the real and what is sort of like manipulative information.
12:41How would you now, how would you now guide people?
12:44Because a lot of people in the social media, they always say, oh, come on, whatever you see in social media, that's fake or whatever.
12:51But again, there are people who are in social media like you, contributing to the right way and the right information.
13:01I think like for me, from the onset, when I started doing my podcasts five years ago, it was really about highlighting the people in our community, in our local community and the things that they do.
13:16And what their personal life journeys are, what their challenges are, what their successes are.
13:25And a lot of the people I've interviewed are immigrants.
13:30And a lot of them are small business owners who, you know, were starting or a lot of them have only started during the pandemic.
13:38And so these are, you know, people that we can, most of these people, we can look up to them because we've seen their work.
13:49We've, you know, we've heard it from them as far as what they do in terms of their business, how they're able to make it grow.
13:57So, and it's really about, you know, their life journey and what they go through every day.
14:04Yeah, true.
14:05Because the only ones who can tell you are the ones who underwent that kind of the challenges, you know, the ups and downs, you know.
14:13And that's how you can, you can really learn from them, you know.
14:17But how is it now, what's your take on the Gen Z right now, the young generation now entering into the business world?
14:26Ano ba ang napansin mo ngayon between the previous generation and the present generation, as they say, the Gen Z, in fact, we're even ahead, we're even advanced right now, di ba?
14:41And I think, you know, society evolves, and, you know, there are certain things that we do now that they, like, people didn't do 100 years or 1,000 years ago.
14:55And so, you know, in terms of, like, the different generations, like, you know, there are certain things that my generation does still, but there are certain things that we don't do that, you know, younger generations do, right?
15:09And so, it's really, you know, taking that and learning from them, learning from the young people as well.
15:16And also, you know, this goes back to our educational system.
15:21There are certain things that we're taught.
15:23There are certain things that, you know, we learn in school that we never use, you know.
15:29And, you know, we see a lot of these thought leaders and professionals, like, multi-billionaires that, who were dropouts.
15:40That's just one example.
15:41I mean, but there's very few of them, and there's still, you know, there's still a lot of value in going to school and learning the traditional way.
15:52But there are certain things that could be changed.
15:56There are certain things, you know, that, like, we learn that other people, you know, didn't do in the past.
16:06Right, right.
16:07And, you know, like what I said earlier, things evolve, like, life evolves every day.
16:13Even language itself is evolving every day.
16:17Yeah, and even technology, imagine years ago, we won't be talking this way, you know, because A, it's something new.
16:28B, it's kind of expensive at that time.
16:31And parabang, the world has no boundaries now.
16:35And this is, yeah.
16:37There are certain things that, you know, no one ever thought of before.
16:41I mean, like what you said, like technology, there are no means to do certain things.
16:46Mm-hmm.
16:47Right?
16:48And, you know, one of the things that I'm learning is, you know, AI.
16:55And, like, I, you know, I saw, you know, your posts regarding AI.
17:02And, you know, and it's true, like, you know, all of us have to learn how to use AI.
17:08We certainly, there's certainly something to be said about the human connection.
17:14Like, AI is not going to replace, you know, humans completely because there still needs to be that cognitive way of thinking, right?
17:29Like we, like that AI or like machines can't do and that only humans can.
17:35So, yeah.
17:36But I think the basic challenge here, Mick, is that the way I see it, there are two types of people.
17:43People who resist learning AI because they think it's something of no use or a threat.
17:50But those who will, who are open to learning, they can be, they can have the advantage.
17:58They're the game changer.
17:59In other words, because of the technology.
18:02If you notice nowadays, you look at the, you look at the different kinds of job hiring.
18:08You go to LinkedIn, for example.
18:10You will now notice a lot of people are now searching for people who are AI certified, di ba?
18:18Parabang, now is the time na probably for people watching and say, now is the time to change your mindset.
18:27Now is the time to start learning.
18:29It's not early.
18:30It's not late, no?
18:31Because there's no age limit, di ba?
18:33So, in terms of entrepreneurship, how do you now see the AI working in your area in California?
19:02How do you see it now working?
19:04Well, like for me personally, it's, it's helped me a lot.
19:09It's helped me quite a bit in terms of the like structuring and putting together the framework for, for what I do.
19:19And a lot of it, you know, is the administrative part of the business, you know?
19:27So, instead of like, so I see like, you know, instead of me being stuck at home or being stuck in the office and doing all these administrative things, such as putting together a handbook or a guidebook or a business plan.
19:43And, you know, and, you know, those things that could be done and, you know, certain documents and things like that.
19:52And, you know, like, you know, like I found like AI to be helpful, you know, for producing those things for me.
20:00And, you know, and there's a lot of things that, you know, like AI, you can use AI to do certain things.
20:09And, you know, the thing that it can do is meet with people face to face and build those relationships and, you know, really like make sure that you're, you know, touching other people's lives.
20:26And, you know, you're connecting with them because those are the people who will help you with your business.
20:31I mean, you're going to get clients from those people.
20:34I mean, not from AI itself.
20:37Correct, correct.
20:38In other words, it's really an assistant, no?
20:42It is an assistant to somebody, an entrepreneur like you or like me, who will help elaborate, who will make yourself more relevant.
20:56You know, it also gives you the idea of what other angles to think about, right?
21:03When you are thinking like you're a writer too, sometimes you enter into a writer's block, you know?
21:10I mean, you don't even know what to write, right?
21:13You're stuck.
21:14What will I write?
21:15And then here you are, you ask AI, what are the areas or areas that you may want to write on?
21:23And there's a ton of suggestions.
21:27And so it, again, boosts up your creativity, you know?
21:30It's like a car that went on a dead battery and you're given a push and that sort of kick, again, the life of an entrepreneur, right?
21:43So, by the way, before I forget, what is the name of your podcast?
21:48Because a lot of people might be asking, oh, I'd like to listen to the podcast of Mick Diaz.
21:53Oh, okay.
21:54It's called Chat with Mick on YouTube.
21:58My channel is Mick Diaz Presents on YouTube.
22:02So, I have two kinds of podcasts.
22:06So, I have Chat with Mick that features business owners, entertainers, community leaders, people who are passionate, passionate individuals with their own fashion projects.
22:21And I have another podcast.
22:23It's called Faith and Forks, where faith feeds the soul.
22:27And so that one is Christian-based.
22:29We talk about people's walk with Christ.
22:33Oh, fantastic.
22:35Baka you might have another podcast in the making.
22:40Yeah, I do.
22:42Fashion with Mick.
22:43Fashion talk with Mick.
22:48It can be, no?
22:50Mick Diaz Fashion Presents.
22:53Thank you for the suggestion.
22:54No, because nowadays, you know, Mick, it's a matter of how people dress up, right?
23:01You're not, I mean, you don't have to be overly dressed, but you have to be presentable, right?
23:08Because, like, for example, I know for a fact I was taught that way.
23:13I was brought up that way.
23:14You know, you enter into a meeting.
23:17What kind of presentation are you having?
23:20What kind of body language are you having?
23:24The way you talk, okay?
23:27Even the way you dress.
23:29Because there were several comments I got when people say,
23:34how come nowadays as if people just woke up from bed and they're now off to a meeting?
23:38And, di ba, parang dressing up, not really power dressing.
23:44Ano ba ang masabi mo doon?
23:46Because nowadays, alam mo, fashion, fashion yun.
23:49Ako nga, nagugulat ako yung Mick, eh, no?
23:51Probably I belong to the old school.
23:53Ngayon, nowadays, you see people in suits.
23:56And yet, they're wearing sneakers.
24:01Di ba?
24:01Well, a few years ago, I was in a podcast.
24:07I interviewed some hosts.
24:10And one of the hosts was saying that even though we were at home,
24:14even though, like, she was auditioning for roles.
24:20She was an actress.
24:21She's an actress.
24:22She was auditioning for roles.
24:24And she was hosting through her podcast.
24:27She would, you know, put makeup on and wear heels and wear a nice dress.
24:33Because the way you dress affects how you feel.
24:37And that's what you project to other people.
24:39And so, even though, you know, a lot of us are working from home.
24:43Or, you know, we have meetings like this on Zoom.
24:46But, you know, when you dress up and when you put makeup on,
24:50when you do your hair, it really makes you feel different.
24:55And that's what you project out there.
24:57I agree.
24:58I agree.
24:59You know, during the pandemic, I have friends who are wearing everything on top,
25:05you know, but underneath, they're wearing shorts.
25:08And, you know, I guess I like the way you said it, no?
25:13Everything, you dressed up yourself, but you now create sort of like a self-confidence, right?
25:21Yes, yes.
25:22Whether it's off camera or face-to-face.
25:26To say, when you dress up, it makes you feel different.
25:29You're not like, you're not a super girl.
25:31No, you're not like a super man.
25:33But again, you get the feeling that you're all ready to face the world, right?
25:38Compared to your house clothes.
25:41Yes, that's true.
25:42And, you know, when I go out there, I don't feel good about myself if I'm not dressed a certain way or if I'm not looking a certain way.
25:53That's true.
25:54Now, you know.
25:54Now you have an idea.
25:56Mick Diaz presents Dressing Up Tips.
25:59See, I gave you already a tip.
26:04So, that will be podcast number three, ladies and gentlemen.
26:07Watch out for Mick Diaz on fashion tips, right?
26:11Thank you so much.
26:13So, anyway, I don't want to, you know, get much of your time because I know you're doing a lot of events here and there.
26:21But, so, what do you think is one piece of advice for people who are trying to find themselves, you know, trying to find their way or meaning of life.
26:36In other words, a lot of people are now sort of lost because of events that happened in their workplace or probably they lost a loved one or probably living distantly.
26:52You know, alam mo naman, mga Pilipino, minsan they're away from their loved ones in the Philippines and now, being November, it's almost a month away before Christmas.
27:02Anong kaya ang pwedeng ipayo ni Mick kaya?
27:04Um, well, a lot of the successful people I've read about or I've watched on YouTube and on Facebook, on Instagram, they always say to follow your passion and, you know, when you're, and when you know what your purpose is, and usually those are the things that you love.
27:32Those are the things that you love, the things that you think you're really, really good at, because there's certain things that other people may not know how to do, but you know in your heart that it's, it's easy for you to do.
27:48I mean, you know, they're challenging, um, they're always challenges, but you yourself in your heart know that it's easy because you're willing to do whatever it takes, because you love to do certain things.
28:02And, you know, that's your passion and, you know, that's your passion and when you find that out, like, um, you know, there's a purpose attached to that.
28:10And so, um, it took me a long time to, to learn what that is, you know, I had to go through, um, all these challenges and all these questioning.
28:22Um, and there, there's certain exercises that I did last year, um, such as, for example, um, you know, cause I read daily devotionals cause I, um, um, I'm a Christian.
28:38And I, um, um, um, and so one of the exercises I did was to write, um, G-O-D apostrophe S gods on all of your, um, like the most expensive things or the most, um, or the things that you like the most or the things that you value the most, the things that you use the most.
29:00And for me, so I did that.
29:02And for me, it was my camera, my computer, my car, you know, like, um, all these things that I use on a daily basis.
29:12And I realized that, oh, I create flyers.
29:15I write through my computer.
29:16You know, I take pictures of my camera, my mic, my production equipment.
29:21I mean, those are really expensive things, you know, and, and from there I thought, okay, well, you know, those things come from God.
29:30And, you know, those are the things that help me do what I love to do.
29:37And those are things, um, and God allows me to experience all these things.
29:44So everything came from God and I should be, you know, glorifying God's name.
29:50I should be thankful and grateful for God and, um, use the platform that I have to glorify his name.
29:58And so that's how I came up with, you know, what I'm doing now.
30:03Like, that's how I came up with, you know, what is my purpose?
30:07What are the things that I love to do?
30:09What am I really passionate about?
30:11And, and, um, so that's what helped me, that exercise helped me realize that.
30:18All right.
30:20Oh, that's deep.
30:22That's deep.
30:23Yeah.
30:23I mean, I, I, I went through that.
30:25Yeah.
30:25I went through that process.
30:27Right.
30:27Right.
30:27But again, uh, let's face it.
30:30No, I mean, we, life is just a, it's a transition from here to there, you know?
30:35And, uh, we're just vessels as I always use.
30:39We're just vessels.
30:40We're not the creators.
30:41Whatever success you have is probably, uh, a way for God to tell us and to help us bring
30:49to a lot of people, but it cannot be something that I, I, I alone, di ba?
30:54Parabang, it's not you, but it's somebody up there who's just paving the way, right?
31:00So, wow, that is something else.
31:02And I think this is now the trend, no?
31:04It cannot be me, me, me alone, but it's actually the we, you know?
31:09It's not me, but turn around the M and it becomes we, okay?
31:15Think about the way you affect others, uh, think a way, uh, how we can be responsible
31:22to others.
31:22And that's actually the purpose of this, uh, business mentor blog, you know?
31:27I mean, to teach people that, uh, there is something that we can do if you only look
31:33up, di ba?
31:35Not look down, di ba?
31:36And that's something, like my book, a book that I wrote, uh, nowhere but up.
31:41Anyway, Mick, um, how can they, how can they get in touch with you?
31:47Uh, uh, are you involved in all the social media?
31:51What kind, what, what name will they look for?
31:54Um, yes, I'm on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, um, Mick Diaz, M-I-C-D-I-A-Z.
32:03And, um, you can find me at Mick Diaz Presents dot com.

32:18new Mick Diaz Presents, di ba?

32:30third and the fourth podcast that you will be creating soon.
